How short the leash?

Kyle Orton hasn't hit the practice field yet and, while he still has a shot to play, that is looking less and less likely.

Star-divide

I hate the idea of Chris Simms starting.  Hate it.  But I'd hate it even more if we pushed Kyle Orton with 5 of our last 6 games (NYG, KC^2, PHI, and OAK) still being very winnable.  I want Kyle in.  Deep down - I think he'll be active Sunday.  If not, how much wiggle-room do we give Chris Simms.  San Diego is very good, but not good enough that we can't beat them with average play at QB (so long as Moreno/Buckhalter take the load).  I say if Chris Simms isn't either A. Completing 50% for decent yardage or B. At least keeping the defense honest with the threat of the long ball, we bring in Tommy B.  There's no reason not to.  I don't want you guys to think I see Tom Brandstater as some sort of prodigy, but what I do know is that he's at least more athletic with a stronger arm than Simms.  If Simm's isn't keeping San Diego honest by the 2nd quarter.  I'd pull the leash.  How about you guys?

P.S

Please God, let Orton be healthy.

Chris Simms replaced Brian Griese in the 6th week of the 2005 Tampa Bay season.

They won that game to go into the bye week at 5-1. Chris and the Buc’s offense struggled in the next 2 games only accomplishing 24 points in losing to the 49ers and Panthers. Then the offense started to click rolling off 66 points in the 2 games following the loses. Chris lead the team to a 11-5 record and a playoff game with Wash. They lost but still he came in as a back up and got the job done. Simms will be OK if Orton can’t go.

That was in 2005 before his injury. What makes you think he'll be the same 4 years later

after his spleen was removed? I’m a little worried about Simms starting, because he hasn’t played in 2 years, so he’s going to be pretty rusty.

I'm not sure he can because to have that injury lingering in the back of your mind on every play could be debilitating.

This is a part of Chris Simms we will have to see. We know he has a lot of heart, he lost 2/3 of his blood on the injury and still was playing. Now that’s pretty tough in it’s self.

a thought

i think it would be foolish to bring Brandstater in in the middle of a game when he hasn’t been getting reps in practice all week.

however, if simms does not play well against SD and orton is out longer, i would then put simms below brandstater in the depth chart. with a full week of first team reps i think brandstater has as good a chance as simms does to be successful running the offense against NFL defenses

added to the end of the first paragraph

we saw how that worked with simms last week, and he’s had NFL experience before. I would hate throw a rookie in there unprepared.

I totally agree. Give Brandstater a week of reps before throwing him to the “dogs” so-to-speak if at all possible.

Stop with the Brandstater stuff

Really. Stop it. It’s silly.

I agree

Brandstater gets playing time only in garbage time this year. If we’re blowing someone out (Please God let us blow someone out this year!) or if things really get out of hand where the season is basically over (God forbid) that’s the time to get the rookie some playing time. He’s not the guy for this year, maybe next year or the year after.

Soooo,

are you up for using Brandstater if the SD game is out of reach? (God, what a horrible thought that is…. but if the game is gone already maybe we could get some positive training and assessment time for a young player.)

Look, if Simms throws out another 3-13/13/1int half

What is there to lose? I hope he has his act together, but if not and he stays in the game, that is really writing off the game.

If he does, 2nd half will not matter

If that’s his stats in the first half, game will be lost by halftime. It will be garbage time all the way from there.

Simms will be fine...

the game, if we are to win, must be won by our offensive line. I want to see us dominate with the running game. This is the week Moreno gets over 100 yards!
