The plan from here on out.
What's up Broncos fans. It's been a tough day for a lot of us, if not all of us. I'm not impressed with anything I've seen from this team today. The only bright spot in the day was watching Orton come out for the first time and hearing the fans reaction to him. Finally the guy gets some credit for what he is--a solid quarterback that IS the best option to succeed. I'm not here to rub the Pro-Simms/Brandstater crowd's noses in it. I think everyone can agree now (finally) that Kyle Orton is the best quarterback on the Broncos roster.
So, without any more delays, I present to you the plan. This is what I would do if I were Josh McDaniels. I'm not a head football coach, so spare me the line "Well, that's why you don't get paid to make decisions." Check it out.
Step 1: Fire Mike Priefer. If the decision to onside kick in the third quarter was Priefer's idea, then he's got no business being the main coach for the ST unit.
Step 2: Move Simms below Brandstater on the depth chart. Look, Chris Simms deserves something of a mulligan on the day. He hasn't started a game in over 3 years. However, his efforts today do not indicate to me that he is a serviceable backup quarterback. Remember, the business is winning first and foremost. Feel good stories only feel good when they end well. I'm sure Chris had a better visual of his first start since his extremely unfortunate spleen incident, but this is not preseason anymore.
Maybe I'm crazy for thinking this, but Simms must have been doing a lot more wrong than we saw because McD doesn't strike me as a guy that would put an injured player in for just anything.
Step 3: Do NOT fire Mitch Berger. No he wasn't a "coffin corner" today (whatever the hell that means). His lackluster efforts in his first couple games seem to have stuck with him. Now anything he kicks that doesn't go 80 yards seems to make it open season on him. At this point, I'm indifferent with Berger. Part of that is my lack of concern, and another part of it is the coverage unit around him.
Step 4: Remember. Don't forget who you were the first 6 weeks of the year. You were underdogs in all but one game and that attitude seems to have gone away. There are some players that have even mentioned that they let personal accolades get in the way of team success. That needs to change. Identifying the problem is half the problem, fixing it takes dedication to the team.
Step 5: Punch someone in the mouth. Next time they play (Thanksgiving), I expect the team to come out swinging. Blitz, and blitz some more. The few times Denver's blitz in the game, it usually ended up in a successful defensive play. Mike Nolan can't abandon the blitz because you get burned a couple times on it. That's the nature of the blitz. Sometimes it doesn't work, most times it puts your offense in better positions to be successful.
I know I'm not the only one who feels this way, but I feel this team is slipping further and further into the depths of nothingness. Something needs to happen quickly because the season can change in a matter of two or three weeks as we've all been witness to a time or two. Fortunately for the Broncos, the season can change drastically in either direction good or bad. You want respect? Take it.

Berger wasn't anywhere near the problem
Since he wasn’t needed. You don’t need a punter when you keep fumbling.
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
exactly.
It sucks because it seems like a lot of people are quick to throw the “Fire Berger” sign and it’s completely unwarranted at this point.

I think that
There is a lot of frustration out there. It will turn into a “Fire Simms” or “Fire McDaniels” next because of it. We all want our team to win, but really, we need to accept that this truly IS a rebuilding year and that we are fortunate to have done this well so far.
12-4 until we Ain’t! :-)

The onside kick did not work
The onside kick was really a bad play, because the Broncos could have had the Chargers
backed up.
I also think McDaniels needs to evaluate putting Brandstater into the number 2 slot. Simms
may improve the next few weeks, but he did not play that well, and he fumbled.
The Broncos may be able to turn things around against the Giants. However, you kind of get the feeling in the last four losses in a row—that the wheels have come off.
If anyone thinks Berger's OUR problem, then I have an room available in Disneyland.
Our D has lost it’s compass. Our O can’t keep our D rested, and now our QB is hurt. If there were a “perfect storm” in football, it would look like us the past 4 weeks….ugh!
I love this team and can’t wait for Thursday, but please…will somebody explain why Baker’s not in subbing for Fields. Why is Ayer’s not dressing? What has Hillis done to completely cause a lack of confidence in him? Why all the sudden we have holes big enough in our Dline that “I” could run thru….Ouch!
The onside kick was idiotic, we just kicked for 3 pts, and we should have made Rivers run the field again….oh well, bring on the Giants!

Put Brandstater as # 2
I did not like the scared look in simms Eyes and I sure did not like his play. Not to mention our blocking scheme changes for a lefty. I am not saying Brandstater could do any better , i just thing he is more athletic and too smart to do any worse.
I am Brabdstater could have done WAY better and a few of us said that last week. Simms is a nice guy but lousy player....
Think of a left handed Patrick Ramsey!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

That's one way of clearing the air joe.
I hope what we have witnessed is not a pattern and just a slump. Beating the Giants on Thanksgiving would be a blessing for sure. I would of fired Preifer 3 weeks ago. Moss isn’t the answer on D for sure. Ayer was rested for a big game Thursday. I hope we can dish up the Giants a great big plate horse pucky. Go Broncos! 12-4 Baby!!! until we ain’t!
simms clearly has confidence issues and is no longer an NFL caliber QB.
McD said that he had a very good week of practice and clearly he could not translate that onto the field. He believes that he is physically back to where he was 3 years ago. ergo, something is wrong with him mentally. he should be cut monday morning and a Jeff Garcia type should be signed… Tom B should not move up the depth chart yet. Remember, he’s a long-term project that is not meant to see the field this year.
Berger played well, but remember that his coverage units actually really stepped it up today. (the barrett play comes to mind) — hard to say what that means for Pfiefer… and i doubt the onside kick was his call. something that risky has to come from McD or at least go through him — so the blame for that one is on the HC.

I actually didn't mind the onside call, and Barrett SHOULD have caught that. It really did catch SD offguard. It was a gamble that didn't work.
Our new DOOMesday Defense!!!! YOU LIKE??????????????
which barrett play are you talking about?
I’m talking about the one where berger punted it nearly 60 yards with enough hangtime for barrett to tackle sproles during his first stride after catching the ball for a return of less than a yard on the play.

the ST looked really good on that one.
It was so shocking that it stood out.

Hmmmm........
Maybe if Cutler hates Chicago, we could trade back Orton and the draft picks at the end of the year?? At least SD was a bit scared of him. Friends in SD told me that they all went out and partied when Cutler and Tony Gonzalez were traded out of the AFC west.
Have you seen Cutler play the last few weeks???
He has thrown more picks than Jake Delhomme this year. You really think more red zone turnovers will help this team???
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

i think zig was making that comment in jest
no one thinks cutler will ever be back in the orange and blue.
as long as you're paying attention
Possibly. I need to find my sarcasm detector.

I'm not sure you understand the point of my post.
I never wanted Cutler here when he was here, why would I want him here now?
