Anyone else see what I saw
Hello Bronco County. I am a long time reader, first time poster. Watching this last game against the Chargers has finally prompted me to sign up and VENT. This is only only blog I will do so as I know I will get the true thought of REAL Bronco fans, not just jiberish and cursings from other well know blogs. While my main goal is not to bash my beloved Broncos and our new coach, I just want to know if anyone else watched the game unfold as I did. I believe this game was lost before the coin toss. I was telling my girlfriend (one of the best bronco fans I know) that it's one thing to loose a game( if we lost) because we HAD to start our second string QB. But watching us go down 13-0 because our right tackle is our new left tackle, a QB who is not on time with his Oline or recievers, and a defense that has fallen back to earth, and then throwing in Orton minutes to go in the first half absolutely crushed any confidence I had in our young head coach. If Orton could play and start, which is obvious he could have, it is a complete miss placed notion of arrogance to start Sims. I feel really bad for Orton and our Defense for the position they were put in this afternoon. This day of bad coaching calls continued to rear its ugly head when our special teams didn't know we were calling an onside kick during the worst possible time to call it. Talk about handing the game over. The point in the exclamation point I was making to my bronco fan girlfriend was the odasity to leave Orton in with 3 mins to go in a game that was beyond winnable yet not having the opinion that he could play to start the game with him in the first place. I love my Broncos, am thrilled with the strength we have showed in the begining of the year, but for the first time I have serious questions as to the calls from our headcoach. From minute 1 to minute 60, I was at a complete loss for words as to the justifications. Hopefully Turkeyday will end with this nasty taste out of my mouth and a new found confidance that our younster head coach had won back his lockerroom.

I've been reluctant to
bash McD. But today he deserves it. He made too many questionable decisions.

Our defense is missing something right now that they had earlier in the year.
In games that are tough and tight our defense has to step up to the plate and make a stand. They haven’t since the bye week. If the on-side kick worked we would have been in the drivers seat. I all turned to crap after that.

Yeah
It’s missing an offense!

Is it me or...
do they seem to have become very conservative and now rarely blitz?

I absolutley agree with this 100% and i'm asking the same question
If McD knew Orton could play…. Simms should not have been given any chance to go on that field

Pointing the way to the future
Just as you do, I regret this loss. On the bright side, we may have gotten some critical business out of the way. Because of Simms’ $3M contract and prior experience, he had to be given a shot at showing what he could do.
That’s out of the way now, which hopefully means that Brandstater (sp) will be under consideration for playing time sooner, rather than later. I think Brandy has the athleticism, competitive spirit, and leadership qualities that could serve the Broncos well. I’m okay with Orton for now (love his character and plucky ability), but I’m also keeping an eye to the future.

Here's the thing, I can't fault him for starting Simms
He probably thought Simms gave him the best chance to win, I think he wanted to run the ball, limit Simms throws, and keep the ball game close. What he did not account for is that the Chargers were smart enough to challenege the weak side of the line and get to Simms blind side. I wish they would of flipped Clady and Polumbus, but that is neither here or there. I don’t know if starting Orton would of had much difference, maybe the game is closer, but outside of a couple of drives, the offense really didn’t do a whole lot. The defense played well in spurts, but again, they did not bring pressure and they allowed too many big runs. The biggest problems on McDaniels part was abandoning the run after getting down by 7 and not sliding protection early, the on side kick was a gamble that blew up, because it took away all of our momentum, but if it worked, he would of been hailed as a genius.

Why is this coming up?
You start Simms because Orton is too injured to play without both pain and a higher risk of damage if he does play. You put in the injured #1 QB (and let’s at least hear it for the kind of guts he has) because your #2 has trashed the first Q and you realize that you’re dead otherwise. It’s a slightly desperate act based on the complete breakdown of the backup QB.
This is the same backup QB who played well enough in some preseason action to garner many suggestions that he would be a better starter than Orton… no one could predict that he’d fall apart like that. It happened, it’s a shame, and I hop ethaat Orton didn’t harm himself doing it. He’s going to hurt like blazing heck this week.

i’m just hoping the merriman hit (and non-call of the brady rule) doesn’t set him back at all for thursday

One positive from the game
The “play Simms” cries have been rendered mute….

To ES
I will only repost once but it comes up becuase the head coach should have know how the #2 qb was going to play agains un upcoming charger defense. I know much less about football but easliy predicted how Sims was going to play, one pass attempt and it proved me right. The coach that so quickly gained the trust of players as just as quickly lost it.
