Potent Quotables -- Broncos vs. Chargers Postgame Edition
**Courtesy of the Denver Broncos P.R. Staff
JOSH MCDANIELS
General
“I’ll start as I have the last few weeks. I give Coach Norv Turner and the Chargers a lot of credit. They played well today and obviously forced us into too many mistakes for us to overcome those. Until we find a solution to be able to play a 60-minute game a lot cleaner than we have the last few weeks here, we are going to continue to struggle so that is going to continue to be our challenge going into the New York Giants.”
On starting QB Chris Simms
“He had practice reps. Kyle was certainly not totally healthy, still not totally healthy and could not practice Friday. I was out there at the workout before today and it was touch-and-go a little bit. Able to do some things, certainly, probably would have been a much better situation if we could play the game with Chris because he was able to practice and he was healthy and with(QB Kyle Orton) situation. If we could do that and kind of rest him, that was the idea behind it. It certainly didn’t play out that way and that is why he was the number two quarterback. We didn’t feel like it was a dire situation that he couldn’t suit up and do anything for us. We just knew that we couldn’t do everything and because of the state of his health if we can play the game and win it with Chris.”
On making the QB change in the 2nd quarter
“We just talked about it and it was something we were going to change a few things that we were doing anyway, and in terms of what we were going to do to attack them that was probably going to suit Kyle okay at that point. Less under center, more in the shotgun, and that kind-of dictated that we at least think about the decision to go ahead and put him in there.”
On if he regrets the decision to start Simms
“No, not at all. We did a lot of decent things there early. Any time you get down there in the red zone four times and come away with three points. ...
I think we turned the ball over twice down there. Those are plays that if you make them then you know you end up with points, maybe touchdowns and if you don’t, obviously you have no momentum and you give away an opportunity.”
On if he’ll address RB Knowshon Moreno’s fumble in second quarter
“No, he’s trying to get the ball in the end zone. I don’t like it any more than anybody else does. He’s trying to run it hard and trying to get the ball in the end zone. I’m not going to try and make any more of it than it was.”
On RB Moreno and WR Marshall’s disagreement following the fumble
“We’ve got a lot of emotional players on our team. I’m an emotional person myself, sometime that happens and I’m not saying it’s good but as long as people can work those things out... Obviously we don’t want to make scenes or problems for ourselves on the sideline. There are a lot of things that happen on the sideline that involve emotion.”
On the onside kick
“We’ve been practicing it for awhile and we knew there had been a couple of other situations in the course of the season that we felt like we might want to go ahead and use it. It seemed to be a good situation, we had some momentum. We feel very confident in it. We didn’t execute it quite as well as we needed to. I thought he kicked the ball well. I believe we touched the ball first or had a chance to get it but again those are situations where you take a risk and there is a great reward at the end of it and if you don’t get it it can turn around and hurt you.”
On if playing Orton today will make it harder for him to play again on Thursday
“I think, as far as I know, but I haven’t talk to Greek [head trainer Steve Antonopulos] yet but as far as I know we’ve got chance that he’s going to be basically the same or probably even better. I don’t know that he got banged around tonight so as long as it didn’t get any worse I think the next few days of treatment and all the rest of it. We’re not going to going to have him out there practicing in full pads in the next few days here so that will give him an opportunity to rest it, treat it and hopefully he will be more healthy than he actually was today.”
On if the short week is good
“It’s probably the best thing about this. Anytime you lose a game you’d love to play the next one the next day just to try to get the taste out of your mouth. None of us feel good, none of us are happy about what is going on right now. We’ll look forward to playing on Thursday.”
On S Brian Dawkins injury
“I have no idea about how long it will be.”
On the Broncos offense
“I think any time that you get in the red zone and turn the ball over twice the first few times you’re down there that certainly that doesn’t lend itself to winning too many games and scoring too many points. We’ve had too many issues down there in the red zone. We’ve gotten in situations where we make mistakes early in the game that maybe predicated that we throw the ball more as the game goes on and obviously that’s not the formula we want to implement to try to win based on the success we’ve had this year. We’ve got to do better earlier in the game so that we can stay balanced, run the ball effectively and throw the ball effectively at the same time without giving away what we have to do. As the game wore on today we’re out there with a two tight end set in their nickel package because they know we have to throw it. We’ve got to do things well, early in the game so we can stay balanced and do the things that got us success in the beginning of the season, and obviously in the last four weeks we haven’t done that.”
QB KYLE ORTON
On leading the Broncos into the red zone on his opening drive
“We ended up with three points. (That was) not what we wanted, obviously, in a big game. It’s past the point of talking about execution or running the ball or passing the ball. We’ve just got to go out and win. I think that’s the tone coming out of this locker room right now.”
On the Broncos’ offensive performance today against the Chargers
“We got into the red zone twice and came away with zero points with turnovers. We talked about, all week, having to go on 10-, 12-play drives because this defense doesn’t give up one-shot hits. We knew we were going to have to sustain drives. You can’t turn the ball over down there. It’s just the way it is in this league. When you come down (into the red zone), you’ve got to get points, and we weren’t able to do that.”
On the Broncos fumbling at the goal line near the end of the second quarter
“We would have been down by one score, but close doesn’t count in this league. That’s the stuff that has got to stop. It’s just got to stop. Somehow, we’ve got to find a way to get points.”
On when he will be fully healthy
“I think I’ll be ready to go for Thursday. I’ve been getting better every day. I have been doing that, and I don’t think I had too much of a setback or anything today, which is good. (I’ll) be ready to go Thursday.”
On if he was capable of starting today’s game against San Diego
“I don’t know. We wanted to try to practice on Friday. That was the goal was to practice on Friday. I wasn’t ready to practice on Friday. I couldn’t have practiced on Friday. It would have set me back too far for today. I chose not to practice. It gave us 48 more hours to get treatment and rest, knowing that there was a possibility of playing.”
On how he felt physically after warm-ups
“I felt good enough to be able to go. That’s what I told (Head Coach) Josh (McDaniels).”
On if adrenaline helps him forget about the injury when in the game
“It helps. You don’t forget about it. It helps. Guys did a good job of protecting me. I’m just thankful I didn’t have anything to set me back even more.”
On taking snaps under center in today’s game against San Diego
“We did a little bit and did a couple play-action (passes) and did a couple passes underneath (the center), but for the most part, we knew—that was another thing. It got to the point in the game where we were going to start throwing it more, not doing some of the game plan stuff that we had talked about all week. That gave me a chance to go in and just sit in the shotgun to throw the ball.”
On his attitude following today’s loss to San Diego
“I’m done feeling the loss. I’m sick of it, and I know everybody else is. It’s been a long time since we’ve won, so let’s get back on the field and win a game. That’s all we are talking about from here on out is just winning.”
On if the Broncos control their own destiny
“No question, we’ve got four losses. It’s not the way that we wanted things to go after starting off the way we do, but good teams bounce back. I’ve lost four games in a row before in my career, and we went on a nine-game winning streak. That’s what we need to do.”
On how QB Chris Simms felt following today’s game against San Diego
“I’m sure it was (tough). Chris prepared very well and he worked his butt off. He went out there and tried as hard as he could, and it didn’t work out. That’s how it goes in this league.”
On helping Simms from the sidelines
“We’ve always worked great together. Nothing has changed. He helps me out. I help him out. We’re a team. We’re a unit, (QB) Tom (Brandstater), Chris (and I). This is the quarterback room, and we want our room to play well.”
On if he lobbied to start today’s game
“No, we had the understanding of how we were going to try to approach the day. We were hoping Chris would go out there, and we would play well as a team and we’d be in the game. We just thought when it got to 13-0 and we kind of stalled a little bit on defense, (McDaniels) asked me if I could go, and I said I was ready. We tried to give it a shot.”
On the frustration following today’s loss to San Diego
“The last four losses have been frustrating to me. Every loss is frustrating. I know just as a locker room, we’re not panicking. We’re not doing anything else. We’re frustrated, and we want to win.”
On the morale in the locker room
“I think we’ve got a lot of good leaders. I think we’ve got a lot of good pros. The only way I know to get out of it is to work harder. Guys are working their butts off, but obviously, it’s not enough. We’ve got to work harder.”
On if he knew he wasn’t going to start after missing Friday’s practice
“I didn’t know anything, especially with ankles. You don’t know. 24 hours makes a huge difference, so you just never know. Obviously, I wanted to try to try to practice for a day if I was going to come out and start.”
On not converting on fourth-and-five in the third quarter
“I had to get rid of the ball early. I was actually trying to throw it to (WR Brandon) Stokley, and I had to throw it so early where he hadn’t come out of his break yet. We just didn’t execute it.”
On what he said to McDaniels following warm-ups
“I said I’m available if he needs to (play me). We had the understanding once I didn’t practice on Friday that Chris (Simms) is probably going to be going. When he asked me in the second quarter if I could come in, I told him yes.”
On if he aggravated his injury when he was hit by San Diego OLB Shawne Merriman’s
“No, I got lucky. It hurt when it happened. I kind of was taken aback for a second. He landed right on the leg, but nothing happened. I’m feeling pretty good.”
QB CHRIS SIMMS
On his performance
“I just didn’t have the greatest day of my life. Things just didn’t go our way. I think that we all need to get our stuff together and figure out what’s going on here and get off of this bad streak.”
On being under pressure from the San Diego defense
“It is the game sometimes. It is part of playing the quarterback position, and I just have to bounce back and keep working and see where it goes.”
On being replaced by Kyle Orton
“Coach [Josh McDaniels] has been coaching for a long time. He felt like it was the time to make the change, and I respect that. He is the head coach and he was not satisfied, and that is all you need to know.”
On the first drive of the game
“It seems like it has been that way for us the last few weeks. On the first drive, we drove down the field and it just was not rolling our way and we turned it over. We need to get it turned around and bouncing our way again.”
WR JABAR GAFFNEY
On establishing the running game
“We just wanted to get back to running the ball to try to keep our defense off the field. We tried to establish that [at the start of the game] and we were running the ball and things started like they have the last couple weeks. We drove all the way down there [on the opening drive] but then we had the turnover [10:44 - first quarter]. We’ve got to finish off the drives in the red area. We’ve got to find a way to get points when we get the ball in the red area.”
On QB Kyle Orton coming into the game in the second quarter
“Kyle came in [4:10 second quarter] and the crowd got excited and we got excited. We went right down the field but then we had another turnover [2:06 – second quarter] and that killed us right before the half. We had a chance to get six points on the board but we didn’t convert.”
On playing on a short week
“In a situation like this, dropping four [games] in a row, we’ve got a three-day turnaround to get this out of our head, so it could be good to turn around and play quick. Hopefully we can get a win and end this streak.”
S DARCEL MCBATH
On moving past this game
“We’ve got to move on. We play again in four days. We have to man up and be ready to get back to work, get right in our head and get ready for the [New York] Giants on Thursday.”
On having a short week
“We can get quickly back to work and have less time to think about it, which is better, so we’ve just got to get back to work and get back to a winning way.”
WR BRANDON MARSHALL
On losing to the San Diego Chargers
“It’s obviously frustrating. This is probably the most frustrating game I’ve ever been a part of. I approached it like it was a playoff game, and I’m frustrated because we lost. We all need to look at ourselves first. I’m going to go back and watch film on myself and see what I’m doing wrong, what I changed from last year, how can I help move the ball down the field, get the ball. So, I’m going to look at myself first and go back to last year and see if I changed anything, or if my routes aren’t the same, or if I’m not catching the ball as well, so I’ll start there.”
On his frustration boiling over after RB Knowshon Moreno’s second quarter fumble
“It was frustrating. Those are plays that kind of kill drives, and we need to punch it in next time.”
RB KNOWSHON MORENO
On his fumble
“It is just a situation that is not good; we need to capitalize on those situations. I was trying too much, forgetting that we had three more downs. I was just trying too much to get the score for the team, but we can’t have those fumbles if we want to win.”
On the second half
“I just wanted to bounce back and try and get some yards for the team. The offensive line was opening up holes pretty wide that were easy for us to get through. But I think that it always comes back to that fumble.”
On QB Kyle Orton replacing QB Chris Simms
“I do not know if it changed anything, but we were able to get the ball down the field and get some yards and also get into the red zone, and hopefully come up with the score.”
OLB/DE MARIO HAGGAN
On the Loss
“It’s football, man. We were not doing the things that we need to do to win the game. We had the momentum for a hot second there, but we did not convert the opportunity that we had. Today, the Chargers played a better game. They made more plays and did the things necessary to win. We did not show up today, but we have to get back on track.”
On rebounding from this loss
“We have to think about the blessing and the opportunity that we have to play this game. A good thing about the NFL is that you have the chance to play another day. We have six games left, and a big one on Thursday night.”
On the Chargers running game
“When you have it going, you have it going, and today they got some big runs. It is up to us to stop the run, and you can’t get mad. They had a good game plan and they stuck with it.”

Orton sounds like he’ll be able to play Thursday and if nothing else, that is fantastic news.

i think that is one of the few positive things to hear about today.
hopefully the Giants spent too much energy on thier OT game to not be in a good mode thursday night. I’ll have some alka seltzer if this gets ugly again thanksgiving night.

The ship is sinking...............
With the exception of the first half against the lowly Skins, our team has been manhandled on both sides of the ball for 7 of the last 8 quarters, and been blown out in 3 of the games, with all 4 being double digit losses. We should be happy that this has happened now before we give a long and expensive contract to a journeyman QB who played well for about 4 games.

“It’s not over till it’s over”…………….. Hey, I’m still looking forward to The Giants game, I’m just feeling like we’re swimming uphill. But don’t you agree that it would not be a good idea to throw a bunch of money at Orton?
by ZigNate on Nov 22, 2009 8:13 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I am really looking forward to the Giants game because i want to see the broncos get a win on my b-day
But no i would not agree with throwing a bunch of money at Orton………I say that they should wait till the offseason so they can see how he plays and handles himself the rest of the season. Orton has played pretty well lately even if he is injured
by Whosbob89 on Nov 22, 2009 8:16 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
You mean swimming upstream?
Anyways, I think that throwing a bunch of money at Orton isn’t a “good idea”. Obviously, the broncos are going to try and save as much money as possible while Kyle is going to try and get as much as possible (unless he really wants to play here and will give us the home team discount).
His contract will be handled in the offseason after everyone has had a chance to reflect on how valuable he actually is to this team.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Have you been watching the last few seasons?
Doom always gets a ridiculous amount of sacks in the first part of the season, then is conspicuously quiet for the remainder of the year. And our D-line’s fortunes tend to mirror his…

no options for Orton?
I think it will be difficult for Orton to command much, as there will probably not be a great deal of interest in him elsewhere…………… unless he resurrects the Broncs to 10-6 or better…………. so we will not have to pay a bunch hopefully……………. while we try to find our QB of the future.
by ZigNate on Nov 22, 2009 8:21 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Hold on, what's wrong with Orton that we need a QB of the future?
He came in injured and provided a spark instantly, moved the ball well. Moreno lost a fumble that cost us a TD – would’ve made it a one-posession game. Decent drive to start 3Q – can not ask for a TD every single time. And then the game was lost when that onside kick failed. Orton was the only thing that worked in the game. Well, actually, Prater and Berger were OK, too.

Boydy - do you really think Orton is the future............
……………….. for a former AFC power that hopes to return to the playoffs and maybe the SB?? The guy has been in the league for years and could not even win a starting job against Rex Grossman. Maybe he is a bright spot compared to Simms, and maybe everyone assumed he was going to be terrible – the fact is that he is mediocre. What was McD thinking not shopping around for a reasonable backup QB during the off season? If Orton is really one of the only bright spots right now, that speaks volumes that there are very few.
by ZigNate on Nov 22, 2009 11:14 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
lol stop embarrasing yourself you are gonna have to do better than this
When did he compete for teh starting job against Grossman ? Oh yeah he competed ONLY LAST SEASON and he actually won the job . When people start out posts with nonsense it kinda show that the yput no thought whatsoever into what they wanted to say and instead chose to insult everyones intelligence .
Just silly some of you could at least try
by Hoopforia on Nov 23, 2009 12:02 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
This is just a collection of MSM "truisms"
that aren’t at all true.
Grossman was a number 1 pick. The Bears wanted him to succeed and gave him every opportunity to do so, including installing him as the starter.
Orton beat out Grossman the only time he was given the opportunity to do so, and — had his defense not blown a number of games last year in the final minute — he’d have led the Bears to the playoffs with 11 wins.
Orton just turned 27. He is 4 months older than Jay Cutler. He has played for as many teams as has Jay Cutler. So he is no more a “journeyman” than is Jay Cutler.
Orton is a pocket passer. McDaniels runs a pocket passing offense predicated on smart QBs reading defenses and getting the ball to the open receiver. This further entails that the QBs and the receivers be on the same page.
We are 10 weeks into a new system. If McDaniels chooses to continue playing this offensive system, Orton is the perfect fit.
But this offense only works if you score in the redzone, don’t turn the ball over, and can play a complementary game.
The Broncos were running the ball well yesterday. Had they not gotten behind 20-3, they’d have been able to play the kind of balanced game that Orton runs so well.
“Fans” like you are going to keep the Broncos on a QB carousel for years. And each time we start a new QB, that same 3-year learning curve applies.
by JeffG on Nov 23, 2009 10:17 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Journeyman?
He’s played for two teams. He’s 4 months older than our last QB. He’s played injured and, had he not gotten his ankle rolled up on against Washington, would have taken a 7-2 record into this week.
Would you rather have “journeyman” Cutler back?
This is what I mean about Denver “fans”. They treat NFL football as if it’s fantasy football, and they would rather lose with a marquis QB than win with a less sexy model who will play hurt and who has proven that, when the team is playing complementary football, he will win.

That's the thing
we wouldn’t have to throw a bunch of money at Orton. He wouldn’t garner that much on the open market.
But keep in mind that John Elway didn’t win a superbowl ‘til he had an o-line, wr, te, and rb that would all be in the hall if they played on a coast…and that we didn’t even win the division that year.

How about this unintended joke from Simms
“Coach [Josh McDaniels] has been coaching for a long time. " – this about a first-year HC.
I’m sure he did not mean to diss the coach, he was just asking a dumb question (how he feels about being replaced). The only way to answer this question is with platitudes, but the one that rolled off Chris’ tongue did not really fit too well.

I Don't Want To Hear Anything Else About Simms
He’s a retard for one thing and he can’t play well. Mr. Bowlen should kick Simms to the curb right now. He’s useless. Let Brandstater be the backup if need be, but I want nothing more to do with Chris Simms.

if I can articulate how I feel better, I don’t ever want Simms to wear Broncos orange and blue again. Let’s bring in Jeff Garcia Tuesday.

Orton seems pissed....
I think the whole team is pissed now hopefully they play that way. Tired of seeing them roll over. Play mean, play with attitude, and TAKE IT damnit. You want to win? Then stop talking about it and go do it. Go WIN.

Too much negativity, the good ship of the Broncos ship still has time to right itself
I expect the coaches and leaders to find positives to build on from this losing streak. Too many fans seem ready to throw in the towel, that kind of an attitude will not get us to the playoffs.
Several years ago the Giants had a very blah season then went on to win the Super Bowl. I’m not a Giants fan by any stretch, but I respect the never-say-die attitude they showed (although I wouldn’t mind if the Giants did a bit of choking this Thursday).
I agree, Larsen shouldn’t get any bigger. I am getting tired of his bone crushing hits knocking the pixels off my TV, once they fall to the floor they are very hard to find.

B, if our Broncos are a submarine...
…then I hope we open all tubes, flood the ballistic missile tubes 1-53, and go down FIGHTING!
We gonna be alright. I’m cool with 6-4 10/11 weeks into the season. I wouldn’t want to be the Giants right now.
Have faith, brother Boydy. It’s not over till our W/L column equals 16, bro.

We have six more games, perfectly winnable
I feel ya boydy. Not great odds, sure, not great effort lately, sure, but I’d rather we split the series with SD as we did than drop them both. I’ll be looking very closely at this team and coaching staff over the next few weeks for signs that they can get it together down the stretch. There’s a lot to fix, but still it’s too early to write this team off. Keep the faith!! We have a couple more Ws in us, I can feel it!!

This team needs some inspiration from Coach John Heisman
(Yes, THAT Heisman)
As a college football coach, he once said this to his team:
Gentlemen, it is better to have died a small boy than to fumble this football.
I think it fits well here.

I dont get it
I don’t get the primary line of analysis I see in regard to the Broncos. That they are a good team that has somehow fallen on some hard times.
I mean does anyone not think that this is a rebuilding team? The Broncos are somewhat victims of their early success. Prior to the season, the predictions were grim. Then, we go 6-0 and all of sudden people forget that this team has been mediocre for the past decade and just fired its head coach last year.
If we go 8-8 this year and establish some things like a better defense and get some experience for some young stars on offense then that is a success.
Why the gloom from the fans? Did you really expect this team to contend?
Why the snarkiness from the MSM? They predicted this team to get 3 wins, and they have exceeded those expectations.

Actually, the person who should be cut...
is the Right Tackle who provided a picture perfect “Look Out” block on the Charger DE.
Blame Simms all you want, but he only threw 2 incompletion’s on 4 passes while being sacked twice.
I don’t think he is the QB of the future, but you have to be fair to the kid. The Broncos O-Line blew chunks while he was in there. There was a False Start on the Center fer cryin out loud! Get yer frackin head in the game Weigman!

Ghastly
That’s the most charitable description I can come up with for today’s game.
I am just going to pretend this is all a terrible dream, and when I sit down for Thanksgiving dinner a different team will take the field than we saw today.

I just have one question to everyone....
If we had our choice of what QB was going to run our team how many of you out there would have picked kyle as our QB??
We got Kyle in a trade, I don’t think anyone of us EVER said to ourselves at anytime in our Bronco lives " Man, I wish Kyle Orton was our QB" NOT ONE OF US…..
He is our QB now and may be next season and may be a great guy and great team guy but he is not the one that is going to take us all the way to the big dance. I am not beating on Kyle but I don’t think he has ever put the fear into another team that demanded the respect of his QB ability. Not one team… sure he has a winning record as a QB but that is just one of those stats that mean nothing.
He played for the bears, not much of a threat but he had a winnin record for them and now he plays for us and he has a winning reocord. The jury is still out on if that record will be on the winnning side at the end . Anyone that believes that we are a killer offense this year even when we were on that hot streak look again.
Kyle is our man right now and maybe for next year and I would not put much stock in that if we continue this path. We need a QB that can bring it on every game and can keep the other defenses honest….
Hell, if our QB’s could just keep the ball moving so our defense can get a breather that at this point would be a positive.
Three and outs just don’t cut it. One more thing, comparing Orton with Simm, are you serious? Have we really come to this? Avg QB to a nobody QB? Seriously, is that where our expectations have dropped to?
by pwsbronco on Nov 23, 2009 12:29 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
lol @ you for even mentioning championships and what Orton cant do with all the other problems staring this team in the face that no QB could overcome
the defense needing a breather on the opposing teams opening drive of the game pretty much sums up our problems right there .
by Hoopforia on Nov 23, 2009 8:57 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Funny
when we won our first 6 games the defense was playing pretty good. Just saying that when the defense has sputtered the team has fallen. I am not putting everything on Orton but anyone saying that our QB problems have not played a big part in our losing is also blind.
We can’t stay on the field on any long drives or stop going 3 and outs. Sure there is probelms with our running game our blocking but also our QB’s.
We will all see who is our QB in two years. If we still have Orton in two years I will be the first one to eat the crow in front of everyone. I will put it on youtube…haha
by pwsbronco on Nov 23, 2009 1:16 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
or.....
one could argue that our Defense collapsing keeps putting our offense in a hole, either putting us in horrible field position or putting us in a position to play catch-up. With the faltering line, Orton is having to rush throws and/or throw them away.
I think it’s a total team breakdown, and both D and O are equally to blame..
by ncm42 on Nov 23, 2009 9:34 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I actually thought Orton would be perfect for McD's offense
But then, I don’t pick my QB by the popularity of his FatHead.
Oh. And you only need one question mark. The extra question mark doesn’t make your question any more questiony.
As for what you think other teams think about Orton. Didn’t he get most underrated in that SI thingy? And didn’t those responses come from player polls?

Believe it or not...
When the writing was on the wall with Cutler, Orton was absolutely the one I wanted on our beloved Broncos. This is coming from an unabashed Jake Plummer fan, but I’ve followed Orton loosely since his Purdue days. Go look up articles from what coaches and teammates said about him in college or in his rookie season with the Bears. His arm is stronger than people think. He is intelligent. He is tougher than hell. And, as evidenced by yesterday’s game, he is a flat out leader who earns respect from his teammates. Not only was the crowd energized when he came in, but so were his teammates. He may not be a ‘sexy name,’ but he is going to be a very good QB if he is ever given the chance to work in the same system with a decent supporting cast for more than one season.
I try to refrain from any negativity, but I’m going to renew my belief that Knowshon Moreno is a fumbler. I don’t know why, but he just puts the ball on the ground too much. Is it concentration, lack of hand strength, small hands, pressing, loss of confidence, what? He has looked GOOD a few times, but to me he has looked nowhere near being worthy of a top-20 draft choice. He just has not looked special to me, in any way. I hope that changes soon…
by ncm42 on Nov 23, 2009 8:02 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I never wanted to be in the business
of making excuses for Knowshon’s fumbles, but at this point, I am sitting back with everyone else and hoping that this funk sets itself straight.
The key for me is that he didn’t fumble in college. And by that I mean that he did not have a fumble in college. Not one. This is all very strange, and it highlights a critical issue with the Broncos during these losses: players trying to do too much. The question is: why?
Precision in thought, concision in style, decision in life.

I agree...
…but I also am starting to think the excuse that a player did not fumble in college is not valid. Players in the NFL are bigger, stronger, faster than most of the players Knowshon faced in college. Maybe he simply doesn’t have the arm and hand strength needed to secure in the ball in the NFL world. I agree with you on the bigger question…why?

I meant argument. Sorry. I just re-read it, and it sounds like I’m being an ass and trying to invalidate what you said. I did not know that he had ZERO fumbles in college, and I am actually wowed by that. Thanks for the knowledge…
