Why are we freaking out guys?

Ok, I'm generally just a reader, but i decided to create an account simply to get something off my chest, and its not a rant about how disappointed or ticked off i am. This is quite the opposite actually.  Yes, im just as heartbroken by the losses as all of you. If you need proof just ask my girlfriend. I curse and yell non sensical profanities all game long, and then the anger quickly turns to depression (i know, its sad. Get a life right?) but i am very upset by the way you guys are freaking out! Yes i think we can play better, and yes its disappointing, but lets be rational and keep things in perspectinve.

This team is a work in progress, but one that can garner success along the way. Thats pretty awesome, and we're a bit lucky as fans considering all the other teams that are a "work in progress". We're the type of team that is good and competitive (despite the deceptive and misleading scores of the last 4 games), but lacks the depth and talent to win games when we make too many mistakes. I know, i know. They should never fumble, never throw an int, never commit a costly penalty, and certainly never lose a ball game. But this is the NFL my friends, and that stuff happens to the best of teams. The defense is paid too. The difference is, the elite teams are strong enough to battle back despite the mistakes. Thats what makes them elite, and frankly we're not there yet. I do however believe that we will be within a year or two. We're certainly heading in the right direction anyway, and we've got a lot of cap room, draft picks, and talent on our team to work with. My guess is that next year we are not only a playoff contender, but also a force to be reckoned with come december. So we lost a few games. BIG DEAL!!!

McDaniels has repeatedly said that we weren't rebuilding. We're trying to win now, and he believed that we could. And though we've had a bit of slide, i still don't think its a stretch to say we're a solid team when we play cohesively as a team. However, we have to play pretty close to mistake free, and we haven't even come close to that this season, let alone the last four games. I think that McDanies has done an excellent job as HC so far, but he too can improve. My biggest issues with him have been quick, and not so good challenges throughout the season. We have guys in the booth with tv feeds, and rewind for a reason. My biggest problem this season was leaving Orton in during crap time on sunday. IMO, he should've been pulled when it was 20-3, and seemingly out of reach. What a great time to let Simms try to regain some confidence, or let Brandstater get his feet wet. (though im more opposed to the latter) Either way, i think it was absolutely ridiculous to leave Orton, who was deemed unready to start due to injury, and who is a vital part of our offense, in the game during junk time, further increasing his chance of worsening his already injured ankle. I find it hard to understand what he was thinking by doing that, and i dont think its excusable but I still have faith in him as a coach, and i think he will be here a long time, perhaps even longer than shanny, and bring this organization great sucess.

Bottom line, there's a lot to look forward to as a Denver Broncos fan, and i for one am ecstatic about the future (that includes the remainder of this season, which many of you have already deemed "over"). We will bounce back, and we will play better. Whether or not that translates into a W remains to be seen, but thats what makes this game so amazing.

In closing, I would like to thank each and everyone of you for your work, and time spent on this site. Not just Guru and the gang, but also all of you who post here on a regular basis. I am on this site every single day, without fail, and its a godsend for those who bleed orange and blue, or on occasion brown and yellow.... =) So Thank You MHR!

I have to agree

With brianbronco, I see your point but put the last 4 games in perspective and it’s easy to see why everyone is upset. First off the only game we’ve been competetive in during the losing streak was against a team with 2 wins and the other 3 games weren’t even close, all blow outs and if that isn’t enough how about this, in 3 of the 4 games the Broncos were out scored 80-20, and only 13 of the 20 points were scored on offense, and then you are asking why fans are freaking out? The play calling is horrible and I blame the coach because this team is not the Patriots and Orton is not Brady so he has to come up with a scheme that fits this team, and the D has improved but they are wore down because most of the wins this season have come on the back of the defense, if the offense can’t sustain drives then the D is eventually going to break down and thats exactly what we are seeing, so don’t ask why, just watch and see for yourself.

Are you really surprised?

A gift win to start the season followed by five close games, one of those went to over time. Now everyone is acting like this team should be 10-0. Gimme a break.
Everyone stop and take a breath, recall what you were thinking during pre-season and put a little perspective on things.
Sure , I want to see them win all the time, but I reasonably expect to see some bad games, assignments missed, and coaching/play calling that seems to make no sense. You really think McD believes this team will run as well as NE? He has to try things to find out what will work, how far along the team has come in understanding the system.

Give them some time

Thanks for listening/reading :)

This.

As a side note, all the talk of Nolan bolting for a head coaching gig has really died down, so that’s good.

That rug really tied the room together...

Amen

With a better draft class coming up in 2010, we’ll have some chances to upgrade our defense.

Well...... welcome, Boncosfan 2112

In terms of reputedly old Chinese curses, you picked an interesting time to join in and speak up.
If you have been lurking a while, you will recognize two of the above responders as having been fairly negative in their past interactions. They are allowed their view, I just didn’t want you to feel too put down by the tone of their responses. .
By the way, I too am calling out brianbronco 24, for the “retarded” comment….. never in good taste, never classy, and seems to indicate a rather youthful, shall we say, level of interaction. My son gave up that phrase when he turned 19, without my having to say a single word to him about it.
I agree with you, all is not lost, and I agree with sean about why. I disagree with brian about wanting the season to end……still way too many “interesting” things to happen. Even if we totally tank it, I suppose I can at least observe the progress of the younger talent, the decision-making processes of the coaches/staff, and the ranting of the fans. But, in reference to the last, I like to watch disaster movies too.

Some people....

I can’t believe some ____s flipped out over this post. So he wants to be optimistic! Go to the Denver Post forums with that kind of talk man, your negativity isn’t necessary here. If I wanted to see people get called retards for liking their team, I’d read charger fans comments on DP. So things aren’t perfect. We’re still going to be better than .500 this year, which is still a heckuva lot better than most of us thought going into the season. Coincidence that the last two games we’ve lost, we’ve relied on our backup(and should never play again) QB Simms to either lose the game or put us in a hole? If Orton’s healthy, Redskins lose and the Charger game is an actual game. There’s still six weeks left. If people want the season to end, Basketball season is here! Go rout for the Nuggets, they’re doing well. The blogger is brand new to the site, way to welcome him in with your negative tirade and insults.
GO BRONCOS!

+ Too many to count and rec'd

The nerve – people must be coming over from the Denver Post blogs…. “Wait, you’re not dissing (our) team since they didn’t win, that’s it, you suck, the Broncos suck, everything sucks” kinda attitude or something?

The old cliche, it takes all kinds…. Comes to mind

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and someone else oughtta have a 'fair' shot : )

We need that intense fist pump back...

I want to see that after finishing my turkey day meal!

No but seriously – I think we all completely understand the frustration and question some calls, coaching or players, but again with big picture thinking, we’re 6-4. Pittsburgh I believe has the same record, Baltimore is 5-5 and so on and so on. I’m sure those already established teams made some mistakes, bad coaching calls, and players did not execute as well as their oppenents did. For a brand new Broncos team from top to bottom, we’re currently in there with the rest of them. Although we’ve been sliding, the overall picture is that we’re heading in the right direction. Oh and Dawkins was hurt… forgot to mention that…

Hang in there folks – we’ll be just fine…

I never raised a concern, but...

although that scene made me happy for McD and for our team, I was somewhat concerned. It seemed as though beating his old boss was his own personal Superbowl. My gut told me that he needed to be reminded that there were still 11 games left in the season and he had better regain focus.

coincedence

that the 4 games… not 2!!!! have been with orton playing the MAJORITY of the time! your right though… we did start out better than we thought… but you would think that we should be used to them finishing how we have been every season. nothing new here…. broncos go to lose out the regular season… same as last year and the year before… oh and the year before…. hmmm… coincedence.

by brianbronco24 on Nov 24, 2009 3:03 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Different team members this year, (31 or 32 now?), and different coaches, so

I think it ranks more as a past trend that is being purpetrated by coincidence, ie, this is a new team so this first year’s results under the new regime/team will not be a trend of its own until there is more than one year, and not a strong trend until there are three years. That is, of course, only my opinion and my view of the world.. It could be viewed just as easily from your perspective, but clustering all things Bronco under one heading——- but then we should include more that just the last 3 years prior.

I wonder if what may be happening is that our disappointment is coloring our views of future events. (mine too, to a certain extent, even when I consciously try to avoid the pattern.). Whether we get the ship upright again or continue to sink will not, in my view of the universe, make your view or my view more or less tenable. Its a matter of what we consider the cause of the events, and we differ a bit.

by idahobronc on Nov 24, 2009 3:21 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Wow

You really think we’re going to lose out? We have won two more games than we’ve lost, and you seriously believe we’re going to lose our final six and end 6-10? Do you walk down the street just ‘knowing’ you’re going to end up walking in a puddle? Do you buy stocks ‘knowing’ they’re going to drop? Is your name Eeyore?
Oh, and Orton played the MAJORITY of those last four games. He played ALL of the first six. Coincidence?

by BroadwayBroncoFan on Nov 24, 2009 5:18 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

In those 2 losses with Orton

We abandoned the ZB scheme in our running game and invited a lot of pressure up the middle. Defenses from the Ravens and Steelers to a lesser degree, overloaded the left A and B gaps, blowing up plays in the backfield. That was a coaching mistake on the part of McD, rather than Orton not playing well.

We all saw that if Orton is healthy and protected by the O-line, he will deliver. Our dismal running game in those two losses could only generate 84 yards rushing. You won’t win games in the NFL doing that, I don’t care who your QB is.

by Horsepower on Nov 24, 2009 11:26 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

exactly

thats what i’ve been saying. it is not orton’s fault for the losses. it seems more like its mcd’s fault for not adapting or adjusting for the teams with tougher defenses at all. I honestly felt relieved when orton came into the san diego game… and than more relieved when he marched down the field with such ease. but we saw what a dismal running game can do to a team… imagine how good we would have been if we had a running game when cutler was around. imagine how much better we’d be if orton had a steady running game next to him (what i mean by that is i believe orton makes smarter choices than cutler).

by brianbronco24 on Nov 24, 2009 11:31 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Hamilton was replaced after those two games

And Orton came out with a 133 passer rating before getting injured.

Coincidence?

brianbronco24...

I can almost guarantee that you were one of those people who at the beginning of this season was yapping about how bad this team would be. Then when we were 6-0 you were mouthing off to fans of other teams about how good we were, now you are right back where you started. Do you somehow feel redeemed that we have lost a few, maybe you were right all along? That is not what a true fan does my friend, a true fan looks for the positive in things even when things are not going well. Why not say, I sure like that Ayers kid, man that Dawkins is an animal? I have been a Broncos fan for a long time and even in the worst of years I have held my head high and rooted for my team to win!!!

Although...

namecalling is unnecessary, and the term “retarded” is completely inappropriate in any situation these days, fans should be able to speak their minds on this site. And then others can disagree. The recent happenings in the last four games is extremely disappointing, and I hope is not a trend. I’d hate to spoil a 6-0 start. I am conerned, and disappointed at some things. That doesn’t make me a bad fan…just a fan who loves and cares about his team. Just like admonishing my child when he does something he shouldn’t doesn’t make me a bad father.

by BroncoJeff on Nov 24, 2009 12:21 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

AGREE, BJ

Fans do not have to all espouse only upbeat opinions. Your post is a good template for making the point. It sounds like we both are disappointed by the last few games (for me, overall offense, defense in the last quarter of 2, team play in the last half of one, and one that is still hurting). Fearful of what will come next, yes. Hopeful that we can turn it around, definitely.

To me, and this is only my opinion, the only “bad fan” is one that is consciously or unconsciously wishing ill for his team so that he can win a bet, a fantasy game, an arguement, etc. Disappointment is part of fanhood.

Like the dude (not naming names)

Who was hoping Kyle would get hurt ‘just a little’ so Simms could play…. And he got his wish the very next game… Why I oughtta…

It is very sad to see said ‘bad fans’ and one must realize they will be present at all times, therefore prepare for it and try to help some understand/be objective, others to just ignore, and yet others to learn from. That’s the hardest time I have, is remembering that even though I disagree with someone, they may have a completely valid point, and if not, I and everyone else can always (or almost always) learn something from him/her/them.

first of all

i didnt say the blogger was retarded… i said the BLOG was retarded! go ahead and call me out… over the internet, but to me, that would show a “youthful level of interaction.” I love this team…. and have been watching since the days of Elway. but i just cant see how someone can come in here and post “why are you worrying guys? we’re improving… in these four losses…. we look like a team thats coming together. we have a franchise qb…. we have a youthfull defense thats seems to be getting younger and faster every year! I cant wait for the years to come.” im sorry but that just sounds idiotic to me. yes this is a place to “post your ideas.” if thats the case than i just posted my idea of his blog!!!! You say that in these four losses we dont resemble the broncos from 3 years past?! well here… let me refresh your brain than! 2003… we started out hot at 4-0 outscoring opponents a total of 118 to 73. finished the year 10-6. we successfully made the playoffs only to be beaten in the wild card round 41 to 10. not a good year. started strong ended in getting our butts handed to us. 2004 by week 6 we were 5-1. out scoring opponents a total of 130 to 77. ended the season 10-6. made the wildcard in the playoffs only to be beaten 49-21. not a good year. got our butts handed to us…. again! saeson started strong… ended bad. im not going to talk about our 2005 year… because we were 13-3 and thats the best season we had since elway retired… but we lost to the steelers at home. in 2006 at week 10 we were 7-2. out scoring opponents a total of 158-100. ended the season 9-7! did not make the playoffs due to losing the last game, AT HOME, to the 49ers!!! in 2007… this was just a bad year altogether. was 2-3 at our by week. ended the season 7-9. were outscored a total of 331 to 409. in 2008 by week 5 we were 4-1. we had a powerhouse offense that would have to outscore the other team in order to win. we finsished the year 8-8. did not make the playoffs… another year of starting strong… ending bad. SO….. here we are in 2009…. started 6-0…. now sitting at 6-4. i know we have a new head coach… new staff…. new players… but to me this shows THE SAME DENVER BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i apologise if broncosfan thought i was calling him a retard. i was not calling him a retard. i just think that if you believe that this team is “getting better” and “look forward to the future” than you have to be delusional. to me that would be like making a blog saying… “hey… we played a great game in san diego. our offense looked crisp with simms under center… our defense looked like the punch em in the mouth defense that started out the season…. our special teams looked so great that i was just waiting for eddie to go to the house on every kickoff!” but than i’m sure all of you would be wondering what games i had been watching…. well that just leaves me to wonder what team broncosfan has been watching!!! i dont wish for these team to fall apart… i only wish to see our team do something it hasnt done for years…. to finish strong after starting out strong. I watch every game hoping that they can turn this around… but as you know…. every season for the past few years…. we have seen the same exact broncos…..

My response to this I thnk is

summed up under your posts timed at 2:03 PST above. I did not realize you had this more extensive post down here.
BTW, I do think that we are getting better in the sense we are converting to a physical, power based team from a finesse team (grand generalities here). I like that direction, so I view it as a positive and “getting berter”— I admit we are not there yet, so the results at this point in time are not what we hope for.
PS- not doubting your support for the team at any time.

it doesn't matter where the word was directed

There are better choices…. call it crazy, misinformed and state your opinions.

In the big picture, I see this team improved from last year. In honesty, I give them some passes for EVERY player learning this new system while jelling together. Look across the roster and there are tremendous upgrades from last years team.

“I” think where there are problems, they are certainly correctable and some just need a little bit of time. New HC, OC, DC, defensive players, schemes on both sides of the ball. That’s a lot to implement and not that I wasn’t excited to see 6-0 out of the gate, I like the 6-4 record today. I like the direction this team is heading.

I think what has been put in place, no matter the similarities to the hot starts of previous years leaves ALOT to look forward to.

Rod bless us, each and every one of us.

your all right

i was a little hot headed in my very first response. i made a mistake by choosing the word “retarded”, which was by no way directed at the I.Q. of the blogger… but was directed towards what i think are delusional thoughts about where this team is at and is headed. your all right in the fact that yes… we do have a new head coach… new schemes… and players. but what scares me about this team is alot of our “great” defensive players (champ, dawkins, goodwin, law) are in their 30’s… getting older… and are looking a little slow this year. we have a head coach who claims to have a huge playbook… but what we see is a lot of the same short passing and bubble screens. our offense is a finesse offense. we dont punch the ball in short yardage situations… actually thats been one of our bad spots this season. we dont throw the long ball… which defenses have figured out. we blame it on the arm strength of our QB kyle orton. there is excitement in the fact that we could have a franchise QB waiting in the arm of tom b. but we wont know until we see how he does in the spotlight. what frustrates me more than this post is that our broncos are in fact struggling when they looked so good. because we can say its the new scheme thats thrown them off… but to me thats no excuse considering how well we executed that scheme for the first six games!!!! all in all its just football. but i love this team…. and i just dont like it when people keep saying “oh we’re doing soooo good…. we’ll get better next week… i mean next week… oh wait we lost again? i meant the next week.” your right that not everyone has to have my opinion. i respect broncosfan’s opinion and do again apologise for the rude welcoming… but i should have just said that i strongly disagree than to use the word “retarded”. that was my mistake. but i will strongly disagree with anyone that believes we are in a good spot right now. i just watched the nfl network…. if the season ended today ( and thank God it doesnt) the denver broncos would be watching the playoffs from home. jacksonville and the steelers hold the wildcard spots. all the denver players that were saying before the san diego game that they werent panicking because they’re not out of the playoffs yet…. can now start getting serious…. maybe panic a little… or maybe show their fans that they’re not going belly up like every year for the past decade…..

Really not sure what to make of you. You post a well thought comment and less than two hours later post a short and sarcastic comment. Not that you aren’t allowed but…. patience man.
I was the first to jump on you today and have put a couple of posts on here just trying to mediate what context you use. You obviously love the broncos, are passionate and inteligent. I would love to hear more but I think what most people here want to hear is insight? I don’t really know how to say it. Intelligent thought, not just negative for the sake of being negative. I don’t think MHR is a place to just vent. I am ( I am pretty new myself) getting the idea that the Denver Post blog is the place to flame away while MHR is more thoughtful.
You don’t have to drink the kool-aid, but you should respect the fact that many here do.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.

sean in pa

there were about 10 comments of mine that were deled which is why i posted the above comment. i am pretty quick to fire back at people. like calling broadway bronco an idiot… everything that he said in his post had in no way to do with what i was saying. he was trying to put words in my mouth… which just makes him an idiot. your right. people do come here for insight. some, as i have seen, come here to vent a little. i come for both. but its like nails on a chalk board to see people come here and tell everyone not to worry because of irrational things. im pretty new here too and the next time i come across a post like this i’ll just move to the next one. let all the cool-aid drinkers drink it up… keep floating on their cloud nine… and keep on with their “12-4 til we ain’t… than 11-5 til we ain’t” and so on. im learning as i go here….

Holy Smokes

I wonder if BroncosFan2112 knew what he was getting into lmao. I’m not sure if Broadway was putting words in your mouth, but it seemed like he was just trying to highlight how negative your view was, IF in fact you did expect the Broncos to lose the rest of the season. I would have to agree, that does seem pretty grim. I hope it doesn’t happen(!!!) but let’s try to keep the name calling to a minimum here, shall we folks?

Brian, my man

I know you didn’t mean the comment the way it came off. Posts get deleted after enough flags are put on them automatically.

You’re a valuable member of MHR, and like you, we are all frustrated with the way things are going right now.

But stick around, my friend. Losing 5 in a row is fairly rare statistically. If they win this week they are 7-4 and perhaps we will have seen some character show through.

You let off some steam. It’s understandable. Sometimes we are all guilty of that. If you saw what I did after the 1996 Jacksonville playoff loss, you would have flagged me within seconds. It was classic Black Hole behavior.

"Wait, let me explain something to you...I'm the Dude. So, that's what you call me. You know, that, or 'His Dudeness,' or 'Duder,' or 'El Duderino,' if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

TJ-

How can I find out about my responses? A few of my responses were deleted also. I was trying to be moderate, so if I blew it, please let me know how it was viewed, so I can amend my response style in the future.

idaho, I think comments get deleted when they have foul language is how I understand it

You were fine, idaho

When a comment is deleted for language or rudeness, the ones that are replies to it are automatically deleted as well. We don’t have any control over that function.

Holy cow...

I missed the fireworks. 2112, I just wanted to offer what I feel is a somewhat valid reason for my own version of ‘freaking out.’

I can deal with the losses, no matter how painful and what bad memories they bring up. We’ve all been spoiled that, for us over the past 14 years, “rebuilding” years have always included at least the possibility of the playoffs late into the season. We have also been spoiled to watch the GOAT at QB for so long, which I believe is why we still treat QBs the way we do.

That said, the only reason I feel even close to freaking out is that, in my eyes, it looked like this team quit. Kyle was out there battling, staying in even after Merriman took a cheap shot at the injured ankle. I’m sure other guys were still staying after it, and Kyle was just the only one I took note of. However, especially on the other side of the ball, I saw more guys just giving up. Not even trying to make a tackle, track down a ball carrier, etc. Mistakes I can live with. Quitting on plays and giving up on teammates…those things will make me freak out every time. Especially because I was so excited at Coach McD’s philosophy of bringing in quality, “football guys.”

That said, I hope it was just one of those rough days from which the team will learn. More importantly, as another fairly new guy around here, welcome, and thanks for the enthusiasm for our beloved Broncs!
