Fix the defense by switching the secondary
Granted this is not a new idea, but at this stage of the season, I think it is something we need to look at. Our past 4 losses we have seen a dramatic downturn in getting turnovers. I think part of that has to do with other teams having film on us and knowing what we are trying to do on defense, the other part of the equation is that our playmakers have not been in position to make plays. I like Darcel MacBath, I think he is a nice guy and hopefully can become a very good safety, but the reality is that Darcel is more limited CB playing safety, than he is full time safety. He is game for making tackles, but he is not a force on the field and he does not strike fear into opposing WRs. I think it is time to look at moving Champ to safety, and putting Ty Law in as the starting CB, provided Dawkins is healthy, he would be the other safety, and if he can’t go, Barrett should be the strong safety IMO in ordr to be able to be a force on running plays and be physical enough to match up with TE’s. What does a secondary with Goodman, Law, Bailey, and Dawkins give you.
First it frees up Bailey to dictate who he covers and allows you to move him to more of a rover position to hopefully place him in position to make more plays on balls, teams won’t be able to throw away from him anymore.
Second it gets more experience on the field in Law to hopefully get some more interceptions, in addition I think Law and Bailey are better at run support than say Bailey and MacBath. It allows you to take better advantage of Bailey’s athletism in that having him and Dawkins blitzing forces teams to change their protections more and will hopefully free up Doom and some of the other rushers from blown protection. Remember, you don’t have to blitz, but if they think you are coming and you attack from somewhere else is just as effective if not more effective.
It will also hopefully free up Dawkins to be able to blitz more since Bailey can cover much better than some of the other safeties.
Right now this defense needs a spark and it’s playmakers to be put in position to make plays, putting Bailey at safety will hopefully lead to more opportunities for everyone on the defense and hopefully we can cash those in.

I'd be interested in how Darcell McBath can be summed down...
…to a misfit CB already. Does that come from the NFL Draft Scout take on him? Or is that from the less than four quarters he’s played as Dawkins’ back up?

I'm not thrilled
with the idea of taking Renaldo Hill off the field. His preparation alone is worth keeping him out there. The guy is a player…IMO
The QB position is set.
SI War Room
Bottom line: McBath arguably is the best all-around athlete among the safety prospects, the total package NFL coaches covet. One concern is a thin-looking lower body, especially because of how physical the game has become in the last decade. McBath won’t likely be drafted as highly as we have him rated, but a combination of solid athleticism, toughness and coverage skills projects him to be a productive NFL starter in any NFL defensive scheme.Same Source:
PRE-DRAFT ANALYSIS:Coverage skills: Has the top-level footwork, athleticism and speed to cover any tight end well in man coverage. Reads the quarterback fast in deep coverage and consistently reacts quickly. Plants, drives and closes fast on passes in front of him and gets there in time to either make a play on the ball or to hit the receiver right after ball arrives to break up the pass. Flashes the ability to cut in front of the receiver to make the very tough interception. Grade: 7.5
Run/pass recognition: Is instinctive; consistently reads and reacts quickly and correctly to the play. Does not get sucked up by play-action or jump on pump fakes. Is able to consistently break and close quickly on passes. Does not aggressively fly up the field in run support, tends to take a more cautious approach. Grade: 7.5
Run support: Does not dominate against the run at the level he is capable of. Often seems content to wait for the ballcarrier to get to him. Is a good open-field tackler. Has the strength to stand up ballcarriers and make the tackle right at the point of contact. Is overaggressive going for the tackle at times, will dive and end up missing tackles he should make. Grade: 6.5

Granting that this is just one source, it seemed fairly standard for the 12 sources I obtained. The upshot is that he may not be a tackler that Dawkins was, and they will use him somewhat differently. Since Hill, who won’t be going anywhere, has been playing many positions and simply switching with Dawkins as it was appropriate, I’m sure that they will have a miscommunication or two but that McBath can be an effective safety in the league. I recognize that this is a huge test for him, but if it happens, I’m going to be interested to see if he can step up. So far, his tackling on ST is tied for 1st on the team, so he seems to be hitting Ok.
I’m fine with the idea of Champ at safety if he wants to, by the way. I consider it up to him – if he does move there as Dawkins ages, I’d be perfectly happy.

That's the exact report as The Sporting News
Did you mean TSN?…or I wonder if SI means uses the same.
NFL Draft Scout is the one that calls him a CB disguised as a S at TT…even listed him as a CB after the draft…even though he volunteered to play S and converted 3 years ago.

Our passing D isn't broken....I vote to keep it the same!
I’d like to see more blitzs tomorrow. tho!

DON'T CARE WHO WE HAVE PLAYING IN THE SECONDARY
As long as we continue to apply zero pressure on the quarterback our DB’s are sitting ducks. Rivers didn’t ding us for a lot of yards he just hurt when it counts on third down. It was way to frustrating to watch him complete 3rd & 6, 3rd &7, 3rd &8. We simply can’t get off the field any more.
Fixing the O
I think that although I hear you, I believe that going to the running game early and often can keep our D fresh. It remains to be seen if McD will adjust his style of using the pass to set up the run though. He doesn’t seem to be a big fan of the running game.
Also, if Orton does start tomorrow, I hope he truly is healthy and can hand the ball off quickly to the RB. (Else he ought to sit and get healthy, IMO. Playing last week was not a great idea, although I admire his leadership and team-first attitude.)
I must disagree with putting Ty Law in at CB. He does not possess the speed needed at that position any more, which is why he is our veteran nickel corner. Besides, we have Champ for that, who is healthy, and still one of the best in the game.
As far as the defense’s recent performance, they’ve simply been on the field too long and when we’re behind, they’re trying to do too much. If we’re in the game in the 2nd half, it should help the D remain more disciplined. Right now, familiarity within the scheme and playing with heart is what they need, along with a little help in TOP from our offense.

Mcbath will be a decent FS, but we need a Taylor Mays SS to secure and support the run. He's a hitter....like Atwater!
I’m concerned about Bruton… He’s fast, he hits hard, but he can’t surplant his position over Josh Barrett yet? Still think Barrett would do better at FS but that’s why I’m not a coach….lol
