Horse Tracks 11/27/09 - Broncos dominate Giants; Royal, Woodyard, Thomas, Law all leave with injuries

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning, MHR Friends! Now doesn't that feel better? It wasn't perfect (issues in the red zone, lots of offensive penalties), but the Broncos put in quite a performance last night. Their play along both lines of scrimmage was absolutely dominant, as the Giants' offense faced third-and-long situations all night long, while the Broncos' O-Line kept Kyle Orton mostly clean and paved the way for a solid game from Knowshon Moreno. The Broncos' D made several big plays, including three sacks and three takeaways. Denver's special teams were better than they've been all year, highlighted by a perfect night from Matt Prater (4-for-4 on field goal tries and 7-for-7 on getting kickoffs into the end zone). Brandon Marshall made two one-handed catches (I'm not sure I've seen better from him), Knowshon made some highlight-reel moves, and Denver's secondary was stellar. The Broncos now sit at 7-4 and just ahead of Pittsburgh and Jacksonville (both 6-4) for the fifth seed in the AFC. Next up? The fourth Sunday in seven without Broncos football. Strange, right? Then, it's off to Kansas City...

So that is what happens when our best players go-off and the coaches win the coaching battle decidedly. That game wasn’t even close.

F-bomb was dialed in as a play caller. I was relieved to see McDaniels show patience with the run game. Excellent balance all night. The screen pass to Graham after the Graham phantom hold was a real beauty. Nolan was also on his game.

We will probably get Ryan Harris back next week and Orton will have 10 days for his ankle to heal. It’s almost like heading into another bye week on a high note. How will this team handle some positive momentum this time? Will we build on our most complete game of the year or will we lose our focus and intensity again?

KC is a bad football team. They lack talent and are poorly coached. But if Denver walks into KC playing like the know this, we will lose. If we can match or even approach the intensity and anger we played with last night, we’ll put a big time beat down on those tools in KC.

This is my favorite website.

A beat down in Arrowhead in December would be a thing of beauty. Hopefully, the guys will learn the lesson of the let down and keep themselves sharp and on edge.

I was surprised to see anyone sensationalizing the f-bomb, which was not only appropriate and needed, but a few weeks overdue.

Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

I'm a little worried about the momentum from a 10 day layoff.

We already showed what can happen during a bye week, so hopefully that Dawkins’ conference stays fresh in everyone’s mind. We’re notoriously poor at playing in arrowhead, so I’m more than a little concerned…

KC has improved pretty steadily

If we can run the ball and control the clock, we win that game by making the KC defense take chances and burning them with some big play action strikes.

If we allow them to hang around at home…

Fortunately, McD knows Cassel pretty well. Maybe that helps in game planning against KC defensively.

by JeffG on Nov 27, 2009 7:01 AM MST reply actions

That's true

I’m leaning toward not sleeping on KC. They around the Steelers and managed to beat them, and it will hopefully happen against the Chargers this Sunday.

Go Chiefs this Sunday and beat the Chargers!

I am definitely in a good mood now. a few thoughts:

1) I think that in the players only meeting a few days ago, they read McGeorge’s post and decided he had the answer to their problems.(smiles)

2) It is obvious to me, that Josh McDaniels is NOT a Vulcan.

3) Don’t look now, but the Media is making excuses again.

We love our team but...

This place is for our benefit. No amount of jawing WE do is going to help our boys. This was a hard fought win they earned with sweat and guts.

There are some obvious issues for them to work on but they put forth a strong effort last night.

A tasty holiday dessert.

That win last night was all about the intensity and focus of the players. Kudos and game ball to Brian Dawkins. He called the players only meeting at set the tone/example by smashing the Giant WR on the 1st play of the game.

That was the most enjoyable Bronco game (team effort) I’ve watched in forever.

Yes, I did know that about Bruton. During his last season, he was also a heck of a safety as well as a co-captain. In 2008, David Bruton managed 93 tackles, six passes broken up and three picks. In 2007, he recorded 85 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and another three interceptions.

Bruton also blew people away at Combine. He ran his 40 in 4.46 time (although he clocked 4.35 and 36 in college) and was tied for first in the vertical leap at 41. He also took 1st in the broad jump – 11 feet. His New Era Scouting report was particularly interesting – I’ve linked to it. Needless to say, I’ve been pretty excited about seeing him play. I am not that concerned about safety as many others – Bruton and McBath are a very, very good starting tandem, with a little more work.

Thanks, lw

I think that both of our young safeties are benefiting from Dawk and also from Renaldo Hill (in many ways, McBath reminds me a lot of Hill. Both are converted CBs, they play a similar style, both come across as extremely smart). I’ve been cheered by reading that Dawk is impressed with Hill’s level of knowledge about the game and his high-level professional prep for each game. Everyone wants the star of the year to be on their team, and for very good reason, but most positions should be filled with talented guys who have a top-level work ethic and leadership skills. Interestingly, we rarely talk about that when we talk draft – how good a leader is Mays? How good are his IPS skills? Both areas might be fine – I haven’t heard and look forward to learning – but neither seems that important to the average fan. I know that both are key to McD/Nolan’s defense and that both of our young guys have good marks for them, though.

Dawkins and Bruton set the stage

Last night was so wonderful. I lost track of how many times Bruton nailed the return man a few steps after the dude caught the ball. Dawkins flew all over the field; he was once again that half-psychopath we’d seen earlier in the season.

There are so many things I want to say about the game, but those are the two keys for me. The way Bruton is decking people on special teams, he will force a fumble soon.

by Chibronx on Nov 27, 2009 9:07 AM MST reply actions   1 recs

EXCELLENT point...

Dawkins was obviously huge, but Bruton was unreal! He set the tone in so many ways. Hopefully while he is a ST demon, he is also learning all he can from Dawkins, to hopefully carry the torch when Dawkins eventually retires.

I thought you were a big Tyson Jackson booster?

Too soon to tell with d-lineman, it seems to me. Those guys need 3-5 years to develop.

I love what we’re doing with Baker and Pedescleaux (before the injury). I can see a line rotation of Marcus Thomas, Chris Baker, and Everette Pedescleux in a few years, with Ayers in the Haggen role at OLB. That would be a MASSIVE athletic front.

by JeffG on Nov 27, 2009 11:26 AM MST up reply actions

5 years? Come on. No one gets that long to get it together in the NFL.

I thought Tyson Jackson was a huge reach at #3 overall. He was, but he’ll probably turn out to be decent. I thought he was a pretty good college player.

Glenn Dorsey is the BUST. I’ve watched him play and he is invisible. They had huge hopes for him, but Dorsey is letting everyone in KC down. I love it.

This is my favorite website.

by McGeorge on Nov 27, 2009 12:36 PM MST up reply actions

Certainly you want to be serviceable before 5 years

…but 3-5 years is generally the time it takes to become a “star” at that position.

I remember saying I thought Tyson Jackson would be a reach at 12 if he was still available. Not that I don’t like him, just that he is essentially the same size as McBean. There 3-4 d-lineman I’d take in the first round, but they’d better be in the 330-350 range…

by JeffG on Nov 27, 2009 5:11 PM MST up reply actions

I'm a sucker for Defensive End prospects.

It’s between them and shooting guards for the most athletic players in major american pro sports. Our scheme has no need for those Julius Peppers type freaks, so I’ve kind of stopped paying attention to the position in college.

Did you like Maybin more than Jackson?

by legendarywalton on Nov 27, 2009 11:33 PM MST up reply actions

We addressed that by replacing Hamilton

We ran well against both Washington and San Diego — and now NY — after that, which is ironic, because I believe we’re running well because we’ve gone back to more zone blocking (and Hamilton excelled there).

But as the Broncos need to play complementary football to be successful, keeping Orton protected from inside pressure is a must. Hamilton wasn’t able to do that consistently.

by JeffG on Nov 27, 2009 11:22 AM MST up reply actions

I don't think we are seeing more zoneblock

as much as we are seeing more runs in general. Every player in the running game scheme was new to it, so an efectiveness multiplier i to be expected as timegoes on..

i don’t see how a 3 hour airplane trip would make that much of a difference. and did the receivers actually drop “a lot” of balls… i can only remember a couple. i don’t think this win needs to be qualified.

by kaiserD on Nov 27, 2009 10:37 AM MST up reply actions

yeah

the only real drop I remember is Smith coming across on a shallow drag, got it right on the hands and dropped it. The only other thing that comes to mind was in the endzone, someone was going against Goodman and maybe got one hand on the ball. Wasn’t a legit drop though, that would have been a pretty good catch.

Are we qualifying the win to Washington with the “long trip back east”? No, at least I’m not. Half the teams in the league travel each week, it’s simply a reality of the NFL and if they aren’t used to it then they aren’t going to be very good football teams.

As I’ve been saying for weeks, Denver had a big advantage with the Giants having to travel 2 time zones over and up to the altitude to play after just three days of rest. Sure, the Broncos only had three days – but the other two factors shouldn’t be discounted…

I don't recall many drops

I do, however, remember Gaffney dropping a ball.

by JeffG on Nov 27, 2009 11:27 AM MST up reply actions

That was on the excellent drive where schef helped convert a 4th and 5

Wat I loved about that 4th down call, was that they were running great series up to that point, and only the 1st down drop, an individual mistake on an otherwise perfect team play, was holding them back. A perfect “momentum” and “in the zone” call. I stated before the game that I felt the Broncos had simply lost focus on their goals during the bye week, well, they were sure focused last night. I agree with what McGeorge said elsewhere when he mentioned that McD was basically in the playcalling “zone”.

Problem is, everything about this game lent itself to increased focus: short week, bitter taste of a loss that didn’t have time to disipate, travelling opponent that would be expected to be a bit out of sync initially (though these Giants are historically excellent road teams). Now we see how they do during an opposite type of weekly structure, where there is an opportunity for extra time off, away from their planning, away from their teammates, and ultimately, away from their goals…

Precision in thought, concision in style, decision in life.

Superb game

(which I watched late last night online.)
Maybe this is hyperbole but that was the most complete game of the season for the Broncos. Certainly the best game in a month, which isn’t saying much, but the defense and offense were both superb for most of the game. And special teams as well.

Orton made one mistake. Knowshon looked terrific. Brandon made several amazing catches (I agree alacumba). The defense was terrific. David Bruton was a special teams beast.

The only debit at all was the early red zone breakdowns, obviously they could’ve scored 35 points but it’s hard to complain, especially since they got their act together and it didn’t matter. Otherwise it was as good a game as one could’ve hoped for.

I hope those injuries reported above aren’t serious, that’d be the only bad thing out of this game. Having 9 days off now is huge, and I’d expect Harris will be back for KC.

Oh, and as I also posted in prev thread, in case you were worried: My supposed “Missing Hat Jinx” is officially Mythbusted! ;-)

This is my favorite quote from that article
Denver RB Knowshon Moreno. We’ve had a chance to see Eagles RB LeSean McCoy and Cards RB Beanie Wells this year and both of those guys have been impressive. But Moreno’s in another world compared to those guys. Elusive but powerful and terrific vision. That spin move on DT Rocky Bernard and DE Mathias Kiwanuka was one of the best moves by a back I’ve seen in a while. (Though that doesn’t excuse the missed tackles.)

Loved it

Nice deep passing game in general last night. I have to admit, I was getting a little anxious earlier this year with all those safe, high percentage throws. I don’t mind them as long as we can threaten deep from time to time. Keep those opposing safeties out of the box and down deep where they belong.

Conversation nonstarters: hoping McDaniels fails, comparing Bears to Broncos, Cutler to Orton, apples to oranges, and casual drinkers to Raiders fans.

A few thoughts...

LOVED the win last night. I only have two minor gripes, and one of them is qualified…

- Red zone problems still concern me. I’m glad we got the win, and Prater was money, but I would still love to see the offense put a complete game together.
- Knowshon looked very good. I would still like to see him break 100 yards, but I know that is not so important, and I realize it’s tough for one of our backs to hit 100 yards when Buck and Knowshon are rotating the way they are. Loved the rookie’s tough running and ball security last night!
- Cannot get enough of Kyle Orton’s toughness! Jumping up in a D-lineman’s face! Beautiful. As was the fact that Dan Graham then proceeded to jump in the same D-lineman’s grill. Sure looked to me like Graham was coming to the aid of his QB. As an outsider looking in, sure looked like Graham has his QB’s back, which seems to speak volumes about how the team feels about Kyle.
- On the topic of Graham…I can live with the two holding calls. He tossed defenders to the ground on both, seeming to send the offense’s version of Dawkins’ message. Graham rag-dolling defenders on those two plays seemed to show everyone that the Gints would NOT be out-physicalling the Broncos! Love the nastiness…
- Jon Gruden? Chucky’s got nothin’ on Josh MF’in McDaniels!!! (couldn’t resist…)

So Arnie Stapleton

of the AP finally comes out with the big “McD trash talk” expose, after we’ve already played the next game? Bravo. As far as it being the “talk of the NFL”, the only talking I see about it is the AP asking people questions. This is an absolutely ridiculous article, if you need to see how brainless it is, see where Ryan Clark claims that the NFL should allow players to fight a coach who “talks like that”.

While I think it wasn’t a great move to get in a shouting match with the Chargers before the game, if you actually print what McDaniels said, he claims the Chargers started it by saying things that wouldn’t be fit to print at him.

All in all, it’s pretty ridiculous to come out right after a big win and pretend that something that happened last playing week is such a huge travesty.

if they want to complain about the refs

bring solid evidence. I didn’t see any blatant calls we got away with. There was a pretty close call for a hold on Buck’s big kick return, but then again there was a phantom FS and a phantom hold we DID get called for. A guy smiling after BDawk goes crazy on fumble recovery? That’s hardly legitimate referee bias.

Graham’s holding calls seemed really ticky tack to me. To be fair the rest of his column was crediting the Broncos and berating the Giants so it’s more fans whining than him. They failed for other reasons and the Broncos won for a host of reasons.)

McDaniels "disrespected" the Giants? Well, I beg to differ son!
McDaniels went for it on fourth-and-5 at the Giants 29-yard line in the second quarter, showing disrespect to the once-vaunted Giant defense in an illustrative moment on how far Big Blue has fallen.

I'll take Kyle Orton in whatever and 5 nine at out ten times...

…which is another reason that KM is proving to be so valuable. In this scheme, with this QB, its usually advantage Denver in managable down and distance. So with a RB who rarely has negative plays, and no penalties, this offense is hard to stop when they don’t stop themselves.

Does this game look a little familiar?

I am very happy we won BUT this game looks to familiar with previous wins. I hate to knock the wind out of the sails in this win but I am just not impressed.

We needed the win and we got it which is great. I do not think this shows us anything different than past wins. We beat a team that is a shell of it’s former self. This team does not stop the run. RB Ahmad Bradshaw
LB Antonio Pierce
Kenny Phillips Starting Safety did not play. They do not have the W.R.‘s to push the ball down field like they did when they went to the SuperBowl. This team just lost 4 in a row prior to the Falcons game.
This is a team that is like us beating Patriots when Tom Brady was not yet playing like Tom Brady. Dallas with their 2 starting running backs hurt. It just seems like we beat a team that is not really a good team right now. When we played 3 healthy teams we showed where we really are. This game is a fluff win and now we get to play K.C. twice which again gets us fluff wins ( I hope) it does not show us anything more. Lets beat 2 teams that are healthy and playing good football right now. Then and only then will I think different. As I mentioned in another post. I do not care per say about what happens this year. I care about what we learn from this and how we improve the team over the off season. Coaches will be better team will be better. Letes hope they judge talent better than Shanahan. If they do we will improve. Be happy with the record we have but don’t get over excited with it and do not get to upset with the games we get beat. The record shows we are a average team that is doing better than many of us thought. Take it with a grain of salt. The real season begins in the off season. We will REALLY know what kind of team we have by the way upper management works on adding free agents and drafting.

Let’s hope for a great Off Season to go with this regular season.

by MiamiMike1 on Nov 27, 2009 4:06 PM MST reply actions

I think they played a terrific game on both sides of the ball. Period.

I wouldn’t downgrade it at all. They desperately needed that, and sure, the Giants had injury and depth issues, but those were the kind of games the Broncos weren’t winning recently or playing well in, but this time they came prepared and played well in all facets of the game. I thought it was one of their best efforts of the season.

Sure if they don’t play that way consistently they won’t be going anywhere this season… and I agree that we should take with a grain of salt and the best is yet to come in future seasons. But there’s NO such thing as a fluff win. And some of those wins during the first 6 game win streak were against good teams, too.

Yes we are still missing 2 starters on our O-line

So we are still recovering from some of our key injuries as well. The Broncos were not at “full strength” against the Giants with Orton’s ankle still not 100% and our starting RT Ryan Harris still out.

i think i know where you are going and almost agree with you, yeah Denver didnt drown the colts on the road, and this one win doesnt mean this team is superbowl worthy, but come one man, enjoy it when your team plays an excellent game (especially for where they have been the last few weeks!).

MiamiMike

There nothing wrong with stating your opinions that this team is better than average. You are right, that the Giants were banged up on defense and running back.

I’d like to think they are a good or very good team, only because the first two losses were due to game planning, while the last 2 losses were due to mental errors by our STs and KO was injured (he still is.)

I think we are very good while our starters are healthy. Due to a lack of depth, we are average when a key player goes down. So I take that with a grain of salt.

But the reason why most of us are excited, is that our team regrouped the way they did (thanks to BDawk’s players’ only meeting) and beat a team convincingly. If we were truly average, we would’ve struggled to beat the Giants on Thursday. And had that been the case, I’d agree with you 100%.

If our D can’t stop that, what’s the guy supposed to do? Especially considering he’d never scored a pro TD before? It’s squarely on the D for not stopping them, IMHO.

I sense fear in them Bolts

I think they know that their days of dominating us are numbered. Piling it on to try to intimidate us again. Perhaps they don’t remember (though it wasn’t all that long ago they knew very well) that getting pasted so dramatically starts to lose its sting after awhile. This team is ready to challenge them, and deep in the darkest corners of their hearts, they know it.

"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.
