Around SBN: The Ten Worst Swings Of The 2011 Season

Noticeable Things About the Game

FINALLY!  The Denver Broncos have won a game in November.  This team needed to beat the Giants, and they did...convincingly.  They are now back in the play-off race (not that we were out) and they have gained confidence.  The veteran leadership has grasped this team and changed them into a REAL CONTENDER!  Brian Dawkins never seems to disappoint.  His leadership and play on the field changes the game and his intensity scares even the toughest of the tough.  We have Kansas City next week, and we have nine days to prepare for them.  Denver should come prepared and ready to attack.  Something tells me that they won't let anything slip.  The intensity and passion that this team has is unbelievable.

I'm not going to give my predictions for the Broncos' last five games.  I am going to take each week at a time, and totally focus on that opponent.  There should be NO looking ahead; a NFL team should never, ever, be over-looked.  Just look at what happened to us in the Washington Redskins' game.  That's why this team will not fall into any traps.  They have learned to not over-look teams, and as a result, should take care of Kansas City.

As for San Diego, they have some real tough games approaching.  They have: @ DAL; CIN; @ TEN (who have been playing A LOT better as of late).  Dallas has been playing extremely well, and playing at their place, should have a rough time.  One thing about all those teams, is that they all have fairly good defenses.  San Diego is at a disadvantage there.  A football team cannot outscore their opponents every single game.  Their defense has to step up if they are going to make the play-offs.  This week they have the Chiefs at Qualcomm Stadium.  They are coming off of a big win against the Super Bowl Champion Steelers.  Maybe the momentum will allow the Chiefs to overcome San Diego...we can only hope.

Star-divide

As for the game last night, here's what I saw.

1)  The biggest thing that jumped out at me, in the stats at least, was the domination of the Giants' running game.  To make this clear, Denver had given up 203 yards on the ground last week to the Chargers.  With the Giants' big, bad rushing attack coming into town, everyone thought that our goose (or turkey...you know for Thanksgiving), was cooked.  Instead, our defense, once again, shocked the sports world.  We dominated the trenches ALL NIGHT LONG.  Our "meager" run defense gave up only 57 yards of rushing!  So much for the weak run defense.  Since Denver stopped the Giants' running game, they were forced to pass, which is the strength of this defense (we're ranked 3rd in the NFL in pass defense).

2)  During the horrendous four game losing streak (which is now a distant memory), this team gave the ball away, AND couldn't take it back.  The Broncos lost the turnover battles many times throught the drought of wins.  They couldn't force turnovers, and the offense was being sloppy with the ball.  On Thursday, it was a totally different story.  Denver won the turnover battle, by +2.  Our defense forced three fumbles, and recovered two; as for interceptions, they had one.

Kyle Ortons' interception wasn't necessarily a bad decision, it was the placement of the ball.  I believe that Stokley ran an out-route, and the defender was in man coverage.  Stokley got a little separation, but the pass was thrown low, instead of away from the defender, towards the sideline.  The ball also should have been thrown a little higher.  I was a littler nervous after that play because I thought it might give the Giants some momentum so that they could get back into the game.  Fortunately, our defense held strong, holding New York to a field goal.

3)  I didn't see the Chargers' game last week, but I heard that Denver stopped blitzing, and that allowed San Diego to dominate all game long.  Last night, was different as well.  The blitz was ever-present and the pass rush was getting to Eli Manning.  Three sacks is very good, two of them coming from, who else but Elvis Dumervil.  What a player he has been.  Fourteen sacks this year and counting.  He had one of the strip-sacks and has been getting pressure on QBs all year long.  Doom is definitely an "example leader".  The delayed blitz also seemed to work last night, as they flushed Eli out of the pocket, forcing him to throw on the run.

4)  If there were any doubts about our secondary, I think they were absolved with their performance last night.  An interception, and a lot of passes defensed.  Denver was in a lot of man coverage during the game.  I actually thought that our DBs were glued to their WRs.  One thing that I did notice is that this team has problems with the Nickel formation.  Alphonso Smith is not performing very well, as I saw him get beat a couple of times.  There was a long play that the Giants had right after the interception from Kyle Orton that involved him.  It looked like a smash route that allowed the Giants' receiver to get open along the sideline.  I don't know whether to blame the play-call or Smith.  Hopefully it was just the play-call.

5)  I think we finally know why our red zone offense is having problems.  Three false start penalties in the red zone is UNACCEPTABLE!  McDaniels was right in yelling at his players...what a funny incident with McDaniel's profanity!  But anyway, the penalties last night, cost us 61 yards!  That is a fairly poor performance, and something needs to be done about it.  I cannot count all the times our drives have stalled because of a stupid penalty.  I believe the Josh will handle this problem, and their elimination will help our offense.

So that is what I noticed during last night's game.  I could've mentioned how great our running game was last night, or how well our ST performed, but I wanted to mix up the views a little bit.  I'm just glad that we won.  The Broncos needed this game badly, and they came through.  I am excited about next week's game, but we have to go nine days without a Broncos game!  At least we can watch the Chargers lose (hopefully).  If they win, well, maybe the Bears will lose.

Goodman turned things around

very well. He almost had 2 interceptions and a safety. I tip my hat to him and the rest of the defense.

I missed his possible safety, and his other to possible interceptions, but I did see his INT.

He really played well last night and was a big-time play-maker.

He dropped what looked like a sure INT in the 1st half. He knew he let that one slip, but more than made up for it with his ankle tackle in Eli’s own endzone, plus the 2nd half pick.

He’s a capable CB opposite Champ and I’m glad McD brought him in along with Hill.

What was kind of funny that stood out for me.

Daniel Graham’s 2 holding calls on nice runs called back were picky. Boss was doing the same thing (and eventually got caught once). But overall the officiating was a lot better than the Winters group, they were terrible.

The false starts in the RedZone are unexceptable and shouldn’t even be a part in our game. They practice this stuff over and over and there is no excuse for it. Stop it now.

Orton mentioned that the sack (on the first offensive play of the game) was a play designed to go down field and it took a little longer to unfold. I was thinking the same thing and thought thye might go to something else until that play came back to them.

All in all they played the best football (against one of the better teams they have beat) game of the year. Let’s hope this trend continues and the playbook unfolds a little more.

Yes

I think we’ve concluded that relying on the refs in any given game is not a good idea. Sometimes they just don’t see enough to call it fairly. The game is incredibly fast, when you think about it.

The running game is improving and hope that will carry us into the post-season.

Graham has to deal with his hand position

He has a tendency to grab at the outermost aspect of the jersey. Technically, it IS holding. He seems to do this all the time – some refs call it, some don’t, but he has to learn a better hand placement or we will have that issue regularly.

Berger woke up!

Could not watch the game so maybe the stats are just lying to me, but listening to the game and seeing the drive charts suggests that maybe – long last – Mitch has found what McD saw and will be a nice addition.

Berger

is starting to impress me. I hope I didn’t jinx it just now. After last night’s game, it looks like his first two games were Mitch shaking off the rust.

The luxury of this exchange is

that two weeks ago we were complaining that it took Berger too long to wind up to punt the ball, and it only traveled about 35 yards. Isn’t it great how now that he’s back in NFL shape, we’re complaining that he’s outkicking the coverage on one or two occasions?

If he can punt for good distance and place the ball inside the opponents’ 20, I’ll be a happy camper for the duration of his career in Denver.

Indeed. That old leg still has some kicks left in it.

What made me really excited was the punt inside the ten that was headed for the endzone until Bruton decided he wanted the ball at about the six or seven instead of the twenty. Mr. David Bruton is playing great ball on punt coverage and Berger is giving him a chance to make plays where Kern would have blasted it into the endzone.

So, that’s the biggest thing about Berger that I like. He may not be the best kicker with the biggest leg, but he gives his teammates a chance to make plays.

Isn’t that what this team is about, anyways? Unselfish football.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Bruton

He kind of disappeared for a while. After escorting Royal into the endzone a few times, the last I remember of him, he was getting beat on a return by the Ravens’ Lardarius Webb.

He was all over the ball carrier in this game. He was pumped and if only the team could feel that way in each of the remaining games!

I was really impressed with Berger last night...he played a great game.

my thoughts

4) The play you speak of with Smith was an excellent play with perfectly ran routes. It was a great pick (legal in this case, Goodman was running back and Smith was forced to choose to go around both players or run into Goodman’s man for illegal contact). I do believe it MAY have been averted if Smith would have backed off his receiver before the snap, but to his defense he very nearly recovered to make a play on the ball. The benefit of this play is that it taught our rookie an important lesson. I bet he’s going to key on that play this week, and go ask Champ, Goodman, Hill, and Bdawk about it, and he’ll learn how to play it better next time.

Otherwise, I think Smith had a really solid game. He made a couple of solo tackles, even though he split time at the nickel with Law, and I really didn’t see anything where he blatantly messed up.

5) Yes, the redzone penalties were unacceptable, and McD got on the team and they picked it up after that horrendous redzone visit. In all fairness, some of the penalties were absolutely phantom. The first FS was called on Graham, and I didn’t see anyone on the line move while looking at the replay three or four times. I don’t know, perhaps it happened when the camera wasn’t showing the line, but they usually blow the whistle right when it happens. The second one was on Clady, and upon further review, Clady turned his head inside to look at Weigs and got tagged for a FS. They let the O-line do that, AFAIK it is legal, as long as you don’t jerk about, so this call I thought should have not been called. The third one was when Orton tried to change the play and Weigs jumped, it must have been that they were going to snap on one and Weigs just thought he was calling for the ball. This is unacceptable in the redzone, however, and I think it’s going to get cleaned up judging by how pissed McD was.

The second of Graham’s holds was absolutely bogus. The first one was legit, but it’s the kind of mistake of aggression that I’m OK with seeing. Graham absolutely owned his block and then threw his man aside and moved on up field. You’re not supposed to do that, but it really showed me how much fire there was in this team. He made the mistake, and it made him realize he needed to channel his aggressiveness in a more productive manner, like backing up Orton (loved that :) ).

fines

didnt the offensive line used to fine each other for every penalty? maybe a good idea for these guys. could help cut down the false starts and holding penalties. i think the funds were donated to some charity but i dont remmember which one now

I loved seeing Dawkins “bringing the full funk” last night, he was laying more wood than a lumberjack.

Knowshon Moreno

I feel horrid for the kid.

It seems like every week, he gets better, but he keeps getting further away from a hundred yards. I am so glad we drafted the guy, and I cannot wait to see what kind of player he will become for the future. I love his prospects as a featured back, and I hope we draft a speed back to pair with him in the up-coming draft.

I think what we lacked last season when Hillis went down was a legitimate running game to control the clock.

Against the Giants, we held the ball for over 11 more minutes than they did, and Knowshon is largely to thank for that. We need more of that, especially against the Colts in two weeks.

He'll be our featured back

but he’ll also be splitting carries with at least 2 other backs on the team. Currently, that’s Buckhalter (who is very good and could go for 100 yards in any game himself) and Jordan.

Jordan may not be with us next year. Hopefully, it’ll give Hillis a chance to move up to the 3rd back on our depth chart.

Hillis

I am done with this wishful thinking about Hillis. He had a great year last year and has not seen much playing time this year. Get over it people!

by Endzone on Nov 28, 2009 12:08 PM MST up reply actions

Sorry I can't

The only hope I have is that he’s a bit slow to learn the new system. This full year and the offseason will hopefully be what he needs. We all know he has the athleticism to make defenses pay. He needs to understand and fill his role in this new offense.

I still have hope. If he is not at least our #3 back next year, then I’ll rule him out.

On # 2,

I also was nervous after that inteception and a possible momentum shift. The last sentence, though left me wanting more! “Fortunately our defense held strong” is a very true statement, but maybe understated. I want to wallow in the ecstasy of that defensive effort!!! I feel that NY’s failure to move in for a TD sucked a great deal of their will-to-win out of them, and marked last time they actually could challenge for the game. How about something like “But our D just took their heart”, or something in that line. Man, I loved that game! Thanks for the post!

by idahobronc on Nov 28, 2009 9:45 AM MST reply actions

just rewatched the game on nfl rewind. here's a few things i saw.

1) spencer larson is a much better lead blocker than hillis. i’d love hillis to earn his way back onto the field, but on thursday, moreno was running better behind #46.
2) the blocking from our guards in the screen game has impressed me. they are both big guys, and on multiple occasions, i saw one or both making blocks up field on defensive backs. poor defensive backs.
3) at the end of the first quarter, there was a great play by DJ that was truly a singular effort. it looked to me (someone help me on this) like a blitz from the broncos with the giants keeping almost everyone in to protect. the ball was snapped, the blitz was picked up, and mario manningham snuck out the back door. with the rush crowded at the line and the db’s covering downfield, manningham was looking lonely in the flat. any mistake in the read of the play, any more time taken to react, any less speed in the chase- the giants would have had the first down. DJ Williams, though, knew who he was responsible for, reacted immediately, and possessed the quickness moving laterally to close that distance in time to break up the pass and stall the drive. great job DJ.

as long as you're paying attention
