Blue Collar with orange pajamas: See!? They heard everything I said!
In my feeble, ill informed first attempt at a fan post, I made a few comments (complaints, actually) about some things I've noticed during this season. On thursday night, the Broncos proceeded to debunk almost every one of them.
If you read that post (probably not),you probably think "this guy's an idiot, and has no idea what he's talking about".
If you didn't read that post, you probably think... "this guy's an idiot, and has no idea what he's talking about".
In both cases, you'd be right for the most part. Actually, they're probably the same case, but I digress. I remain undaunted because I'm bored, I own a keyboard, and I love me some Broncos fooball. Besides, I got some vindication on a couple of small points.
First off, some things are undeniably true. Dogs stiil don't understand football, and to them, cheese is virtually a narcotic. Women (at least my spousal unit) still don't understand, or have difficulty tolerating a man's reaction to football. Brussel sprouts were never intended to be eaten by humans, or any other mammal. Last, but not least, pizza and beer remain a major food group. On everything else, I was absolutely wrong. .....well, almost.
I wanted to see more TE, and I got my wish. That had to be Scheffler's best game of the year. The TE screens seemed very effective, and Scheff will always be a matchup problem for LBs. If he stays involved, having to account for him can free up some things for the WRs
I wanted to see more RBs in the passing game. There were a few screens, but when the running game is so effective, why get away from it. I love the way Knowshon is progressing. I'd still love to see him catching passes further downfield. He'd be deadly loose in the secondary.
Orton continues to progress as a very good QB. If he can slow things down just a little to where he can get a better read on the second and third receivers, he could become great. Obviously that's only posiible with the kind of protection he had on thursday. On the third down play just prior to the second field goal, he had great protection, and I thought he threw the ball away a little early. That could be a result of previous break downs in protection speeding up the clock in his head, and his recent injury. Chris Simms is still #2 (in all three ways that can be taken), so The Ortmeister better stay healthy.
I'm convinced Mitch Berger has read complaints from various media outlets, and put a powder actuated ramset in the toe of his right shoe. He did look better the previous week, but was dramatically aided by a 25 yard roll at the end of one kick. Against the Giants, he was booming them. That's why Josh is a coach, and I'm a tired assed woking stiff looking for a soft chair and an adult beverage.
DJ and Andra also read the part where I dissed them. How else could I account for their renewed level of play? (yeah, right!) Seriously, the run defense was what bothered me most during the losing streak. I don't buy that they were worn down when they were regularly giving up 8-10 yard plays in the first quarter. Defenders staying on-assignment has it's advantages. (ya think?!) I would still like to see some top level competition at the position(s) through the draft.
Did you get a look at the guns on Brian Dawkins during the post game interview? If I were a receiver for the opposition, I'd need to wear "depends" under my uniform. The dude was in the middle of my TV screen on almost every play when the Broncos were on defense. That's only because the camera follows the ball on network broadcasts.
What was that "puddin' " somthinornother I heard in reference to Marshall from the commentators? They need to keep puddin' on the menu. That was some awesome shiite he was laying on them. The beast is mutating, and I like it. He's getting some Fred Blitnekoff stickum on his hands.
If things continue, Steve Tasker will have some competition as the all-time special teams ace. The only kicks Bruton wasn't involved in were field goals.
If Thanksgiving's Broncos show up in Indy, I'd pick them to win; but before that, they must beat KC; but before that, go KC! Beat the Chargers!
Go Broncos!

I didn’t read your first post, so I can’t speak to how big of an idiot you were on that one, but you were decidedly “not an idiot” on this post. You can put my cheesy review on the back of your book: “Refreshingly witty while still dispensing valid points. A+.” How’s that?
Keep em’ coming Jay, some of your stuff had me rolling!
Oh, and I agree with you on Bruton. I have loved the guy since we drafted him and I did a little research into him. Freakish player, better guy.
A man of his size should just plum not be able to move as fast as he does. He practically flies down the field, and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he is the best gunner in the league right now, I sure wouldn’t trade him for another. His play towards the end of the game a couple days ago where he got down there first, held up to contain the return man, and then speared him was a thing of absolute beauty.
I have to think our safety position is set perfectly for next year, as well as in the future. If this Bruton guy can continue to improve, his talents will no doubt translate to great play as a safety. We have McBath waiting in the wings who will also be a player, you can bank on that. And still, we have a beast in Barrett. I don’t understand everyone clamoring for a safety to be taken in the draft next year (Taylor Mays)… Um, we have 3 pretty good ones on the roster already, along with a hall-of-famer and the Peyton Manning of his position (Hill).
I’ll put it in caps: WE ARE ALL SET AT THE SAFETY POSITION. GOOD TO GO.
Simms is still our back up QB and that is pretty scary in itself.
McD doesn’t trust Brandstater to be the back up just yet, it is evident in his keeping Simms in that slot. Simms has some psychological issues to deal with and I am not sure that will ever happen. His body is willing but the mind isn’t. Why on earth he was allowed to conitue to play after the severe blow without the team trainer taking orthoscopic vitals on the sideline is beyond me. Hell, I’m just an EMT and I could have recognized that. Maybe, just maybe these teams are in a must win regardless mode and fail to address the well being of the players sometimes. Look at Ben Roethlisberger, he got his brains rattled around and is projected to play this week. He said the physcians put him through a thousand different tests ( I seriously doubt if it was that many) and football is a physical sport and if you have a ding on you shoulder or your shin tha’s the way you play. I disagree with that vehemently, because concussions are a little (actually way more) serious than a ding on the shin. The nfl has been investigating this issue and rightly so for the sake of the player. I believe players need time to rehab the head injuries and shouldn’t be pushed so fast back in the fracus. Just my view mind ya.
Berger our punter was rusty when he first punted for us and it was noticable, he seems to be getting into his rhythm now and hopefully he will help us down the stretch. If we play like we did Thursday evening, there no team in the nfl that could beat us. Let’s hope they finally get their sh*t together and operate on all cylinders.
I've been kind of hard on Simms.
I really feel sorry for the guy. I honestly thought, when he was signed, that he’d be a pretty good backup. I suppose it could still happen. With that said, in the NFL, time waits for nobody. There’s a season on the line, and if you can’t be competetive now, the season is lost. If Chris continues to look so tentative, I see no choice but to make Tommy B the backup.
Tommy B might push Orton in camp next year...
He’s sure as hell better than Simms today, last week, and last month. I can’t believe Simms wasn’t cut Monday.
I had to listen to the radiocast, jay
so I couldn’t yell “instructions” at the TV. LOL
