The Patriots under Mangini in 2005 gave up too many big plays down the field and were so poorly synchronized that head coach Bill Belichick was forced to take over the defense in mid-stream. Every time Mangini was given more responsibility in New England, he was not successful. Conversely, every time Josh McDaniels’ role was increased, he kept getting more and more successful. However, in spite of Mangini’s bad year, he was rewarded with a head coaching job based on Tannenbaum’s recommendation. Now, is that being lucky? (And the Browns never considered McDaniels for the job, so clearly, the advice and counsel around Lerner is not of the highest professional football quality.)
Great story on NFP about the Browns
I bring this up because so many people compared McDaniels and Mangini because of their background in New England. As we have been saying here, from the beginning, the two couldn't be more different - from a pure 'talent' standpoint.
McDaniels grew up and went to college in the shadow of Cleveland Browns stadium, yet the Browns never even thought twice about hiring him. We are lucky to have him, I hope you know that.

He gives a great interview
I don’t know the depths of professional football coaching well enough to judge, but if the rest of his professional demean is as thorough and well thought out as his post game and post practice interviews then we are indeed very fortunate to have this young man as our head coach. The Brown’s poor decision is the Broncos good fortune.

I could not agree with you more firstfan and John, but lets give credit,
where credit is due…Mr. Bowlen knows talent. ( at least in Head Coaches so it seems )
We are so fortunate to have him.

I remember John, great article on Mr. Bowlen. I am so glad as a fan,
that I picked the Denver Broncos. Although as I think about it, it was about
this time of year, about 39 years ago… I believe they ( The Broncos ) picked
me. I’ve bled orange and blue ever since.

As a Fan of the Broncos for the past 37 years, I have never been more optomistic about the future of our Team…Thank you Mr. Bowlen!
McDaniels is a good football coach. Bowlen made the right choice.
There, I said it (and mean it).

McGeorge – it’s been interesting watching you come around. Being as optimistic as I am I always enjoy your pessimistic view of our Broncos to bring me closer to reality.

I don't know...
Got an email from The Hater this morning, my friend the supposed Broncos fan. Now, the first six games that the Broncos won he declared they were simply ‘lucky’.
Of course, they finally lose one and according to him all of his prognostications about McDaniels’ incompetence and Orton’s noodle arm have come to pass.
It couldn’t be that the Ravens simply planned and executed masterfully and more important – you have to lose SOMETIME.
I’m excited about the future and couldn’t be happier we got McD and Cleveland got Mangini. I’ve known guys who have spent their whole lives swimming upstream to land a COORDINATOR job in the NFL, and Mangini – a man whose football acumen is questionable at best – has one handed to him?
We live in interesting times.

McDaniels is a great young coach and hopefully he leads us to many great years.
This has been the most exciting year of Broncos football so far. Pat Bowlen still shows why he is such a great owner.

Love the direction this team is going. We have our issues, but you can’t fix everything at once.
I agree John

Yes...I like him much better! Thats just me though...I never liked the fact that Mike held his stars above the rest of the ream and unaccountable.

Apples and Oranges
but I will say I really loved Mike Shanahan when he was at his peak and of course he lead the Broncos to their first two Super Bowl wins after years of frustration so it’s hard to not have good feelings for the man. But I really felt he’d lost it a bit as a coach the last two or three years and had too much power, he made some bad asst coach hires and some bad personnel decisions that came back to haunt them. So I have affection for him but wasn’t sorry to see him go when he did, it was time.
I love McD, he just seems super bright and will just get better and better as he gets more experience. Feel lucky to have him.

FWIW
I think this loss will shed a lot more light on McD as a coach than the previous six wins. Based on what I’ve seen of the man so far, I think both he and the team will come out much stronger and with a clearer focus, starting with the Steelers.
Adversity will bring out character in those who have it and expose the lack of it in those who don’t.

Don't forget this tidbit
The Browns GM that was brought in after Mangini got hired was recently fired. How about that? Mangini knows his stuff.
