Talk Chiefs with AP

Hey guys Tomahawk44 here. J-man was gracious enough to make it over to Arrowhead Pride and help us out answering questions about the Broncos and our upcoming game so I figured I would return the favor. As you all know the Chiefs where unable to help you out because we got a good ole fashioned butt whoopin yesterday by the Dolts. We are def. hoping for a better game this Sunday. Not a lot of positives from our game yesterday we started out looking good and then started kicking ourselves in the rear. Enough about that game what do you guys want to know about this upcoming game about the Chiefs? Shoot away and the guys and I will be happy to try and answer.

Jamaal Charles. How outstanding is this guy? Is there a running back that he is comparable to?

I’ve heard lots of things from different people saying he is pretty darn good in the chiefs backfield. Why does he only have 2 rushing TDs? 5.2 yards per carry? WOW. Is there something wrong with the offensive line or what? How come he has such a high yards per carry number, but very few TDs? If it were me, I’d hand him the ball every time with numbers like that.

Where do you think the chiefs offense should attack the denver defense?

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by Troy Hufford on Nov 30, 2009 8:25 AM MST reply actions

Charles has been a big bright spot in our offense for the last two weeks

He has taken advantage of Crybaby LJ being cut and is playing like a beast. Im not really sure who I would compare him too but in an interview he said he trys to model his running to LT and Sproles. He runs hard and hits the holes fast and never gives up on runs (could be a bad thing at times hence his fumble on Sunday) He actually has our only two rushing tds this season :(
I think he would have more if we werent playing from behind all the time. I would also watch out for him as a receiver he had the second most receiving yards for us yesterday and he has also looked good returning kicks. He had a TD on one on the opening kick against the Steelers and had 45 yard return yesterday. Id say give him a couple more games and he will produce more tds and more carries. I would say we will try attacking the defense with Charles he will be the key to us and then the throws to Chambers every once in a while. (he has been reborn in KC by the way) Ive been looking forward to this game all year

Charles is potentially pro-bowl caliber

but he’s playing behind one of the worst offensive lines (worst offenses). So yeah, he’s a threat in any game but it’s somewhat offset by the Chiefs passing and blocking woes.

by ChiefsDude on Nov 30, 2009 8:52 AM MST up reply actions

Our offensive line has been a problem as well

We have been trying to install more zone blocking plays in our offense and our line is having trouble adjusting. Its both the physical and the mental mistakes of the line that contribute to this. The mental being not picking up the right guy and the physical being not being capable of making the block. This scheme, however, is perfect for Charles and will make him an exciting back to watch in the years ahead. He may model his running to LT and Sproles, but I would venture to compare his vision to that of Terrell Davis (yes, I do feel dirty for even mentioning that name) and his elusiveness to that of Priest Holmes.

I would compare him to Chris Johnson actually.

Both are built the same way, 5’11 200lbs and sprinters speed. Both great in the open field, if they get to the corner watchout, he’s already 10 yards deep!

Are you happy with the deal for Cassel, do you see him as the answer at QB

How has Johnson been on switching to a 3-4 defense, I thought he was one of the better 4-3 LB’s I had seen, but I did not know if he would transition well to a 3-4 defense.

Cassel

yes I am happy with him but he does need to work harder also. I think with a little bit more protection and if he gets Bowe back he will continue to improve. I do think he probably leads the league in delay of games and QB false starts though.
DJ well is DJ. He can make plays but he is not consistent. He has actually lost a lot of playing time now that Haley is our coach. He has made some sacks and a big 70 yard interception but then he will give up the big play he needs to show up and play up to his potential every game

Yeah the deal for Cassel is good IMO

Find another QB that costs a 2nd rounder and has NFL experience. It was a good deal. As far as his contract, it’s ranked somewhere between 10-15 in terms of other QBs so thats not really an issue.

Johnson switching to the 3-4 is strange. There were indications early that this would be his best defense but he hasn’t gotten on the field. Why? That’s the big question in KC.

What is the current injury status of your team? Anyone significant?

What rookies are performing well? Which ones might be making more appearances due to your teams current record?

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

by Todd Jewell on Nov 30, 2009 8:36 AM MST reply actions

Right guard is injured

Backup RB, a couple special teamers….LB Mike Vrabel is the only big name there but his backup has been playing decent.

by Joel Thorman on Nov 30, 2009 9:31 AM MST up reply actions

Chiefs rookies

By far the best has been “Mr. Irrelevant” Ryan Succup, he has been fairly accurate on FGs, and gets good distance on Kickoffs, he’s got a big leg.

I don’t know if he’s technically a rookie, but Andy Studebaker, from Division III Wheaton College, was a practice squad guy last year that hit the weights in the off-season, and has played well substituting for Mike Vrabel. He had 4 tackles, 1/2 sack and 2 INTs against PITT.

KCs other draft choices have been kind of blah, statistically, 1st Rd Tyson Jackson doesn’t get big numbers, but his job is to take up blockers, so it’s hard to evaluate. 2nd round we got Cassel and Vrabel, 3rd Rd McGee has been Glen Dorseys backup, and at times looks good on passing downs. Not much else to mention with the draft choices.

Another LB, Javon Belcher, another Undrafted free agent, made a big stop against PITT on 3rd and short.

Another practice squad guy, that is technically maybe not a rookie, but has looked good occassionally, is Lance Long. He’s kind of a Wes Welker type.

"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."

Injuries

We have a couple of our players on IR. Page,Leggett,Goff, Darling, Battle etc…Vrabel has also been hurt and hasnt been playing so Andy Studebaker has been starting in his place (had 2 Ints against the Steelers)
Rookies: Im going to have to say Ryan Succop has been our best rookie so far and then Jovan Belcher and I think that Alex Magee has been improving every week. As far as more appearances…your guess is as good as mine as much as our roster moves around lol

by tomahawk44 on Nov 30, 2009 8:58 AM MST reply actions

it's disappointing

that none of our injuries seem to impact us that much and we can’t even mention Tyson Jackson as a rookie to watch out for.

by ChiefsDude on Nov 30, 2009 9:02 AM MST up reply actions

Do you ever mention Richard Seymour as someone to watch out for?

Not comparing the two players, just their positions. It’s not a sexy position. I’ll agree that Jackson isn’t having an A+ rookie season but it’s too hard for us to notice him as a 3-4 DE.

Improved drastically

Kicking game is as good as its been in many years.
We had our first kickoff return in a couple years vs Pits
We have no punt returners, and I’m happy to see them wave “fair catch” every time.

The biggest improvement IMO is kickoff and punt coverage. The last couple years have been terrible and we’ve improved drastically in limiting returns. I don’t have numbers or actual facts to substantiate this so I could be completely wrong.

ehh pretty good for the most part

I do believe but dont quote me that our coverage team is the 6th best in the Nfl.. Our return game has gotten better. Charles returned one for a TD against the Steelers and had a 45 yard return yesterday. Our punt return isnt that great we have Bobby Wade back there. He seems to muff quite a few punts and hasnt really had any big returns. Our kicker has been pretty solid and Colquitt continues to be one of the better punters in the NFL. PS I wish you guys wouldnt of cut his brother how fun would of that been?

Aparently it was addition by subtraction

Phieffer has had our ST looking like crap most of the year, especially on coverage.

How are you doing tomahawk44?

I wrote a post on the Kansas City Chiefs back in May or June [Who Are Those Guys?] to try and give a discription of the team in it’s changes. Several people wrote posts on other teams as well. All in all I tried to do an honest post of who the Chiefs are and it was enjoyable for me. Several of Arrow Head Pride came by to correct me where I was wrong and it was a great discussion. I plan on doing a post season follow up of the team in Jan when the season dies down. Just a couple questions for ya.

1) What is the teams perspective of HC Todd Haley? Does the team respect him for his workout ethics or is there some contention?
2) How has your 3rd pick in the first round panned out? Tyson Jackson? Many were saying at the time that it might of been a reach to take him so high.
3) Our record at KC in December is 1-16 and that is very impressive to say the least. What will the Broncos have to do to win this game? And how is your offensive line in regards to protecting Cassel?
Thanks for stopping by 44 even though I hope we have a great game over there Sunday.

by bfree2bronc on Nov 30, 2009 12:18 PM MST reply actions

Im doing good how about yourself?

1) Todd Haley has gotten a lot of criticism this year for the way he handles his players. Just keep an eye out Sunday to see how many times after a bad play the cameras go to him hoping he will explode. On the other hand you can take it either way. The first way is that its a bad thing b/c it puts a lot of pressure on players such as Bowe (even though its his fault) decided to try using diuretics to lose weight in the offseason and he has came down on lots of player either benching them cussing them out or inactivating them. It has worked at times and others blown up in his face. The other way he has gotten some players respect and they have seemed to respond at points. Charles came out and said that coach said he is going to be easier on them and relax and let them play ball. Haley has also been praising the players a lot more lately. I think it was taking a turn for the worse and Haley was realizing that he needed to tone it down so he did…
2) Tyson Jackson has been ehh. For being a 3-4 DE hes not going to have awesome numbers because he is supposed to take up some blocks which he has done an alright job doing. I say give him a year or two and then get back with me..
3) The Broncos will win this game if they get going in the air early and often and if they win the turnover battle. The best bet is to not let us hang around because that is when we have played the best. On Cassel the o line has improved but still needs a lot of work! Idk if you saw any of the highlights from yesterday you would see that our center killed us yesterday hiking the ball way over Cassel twice.
Thanks for the questions and lokoing forward to Sunday!

Why do you think the Chiefs collapse was so quick and complete, while the Broncos were able to snap back rather quickly?

I don’t say this to be rude, but I have seen this happen elsewhere too. Both teams seemed somewhat equal in talent a few years ago…

I think it had to do with the Chiefs dumping all of their best players, while the Broncos dumped all their worst. But there has to be more to it than just that…the Chiefs still have talent.

It was the perfect storm...

Not only did we have to deal with the Herminator, but we also had an aging RB, OL, QB, TE and many other players (Surtain, Law, etc). The lovefest days of Vermeil and Herm made the Chiefs soft and King Carl never had the foresight to proactively correct the problems. I dont think that we dumped so many good players as we lost through retirement and age. I think with the Broncos they retained much of their core as well as their coaches, up until this year. Their slide has been more gradual. Slowly replacing talent, removing obvious cancers, then replacing the coach and before you know it they are back on top, seemingly without missing a beat. I think you can credit that to some foresight by the front office and good planning/scouting all around. You are right that the Chiefs still have talent, but much of that talent rests in potential rather than proven talent. We are still a couple pieces away from reaching the talent level that we need to regain yearly contender status.

by chiefsandcigars on Nov 30, 2009 1:46 PM MST up reply actions

Lots of issues compounded into a perfect storm.

We got old in a hurry. We had 2 future HOF’ers retire from the O-Line (Will Shields and Willie Roaf). Defense had been a problem for a little while, but we’d been winning because of our offense. Priest Holmes got hurt, Trent Green got hurt, LJ got hurt. There was also just a general lack of talent coming into the team via the draft.

I have a theory, that until the Chiefs are back to a contender, the Broncos stuggle. I always felt that even though there was a healthy hatred of the other team, the Chiefs and Broncos (in the 90’s) also had respect for each other (see Sharpe and Gonzalez).

Beginning of the decline

I know you already addressed this to a certain extent, but how much do you think Trent Green’s loss due to injuries started the Chiefs on their decline? I didn’t think Green was ever given as much respect as he deserved, and I always hated seeing him against our D. From a casual viewpoint, it looked to me like the team’s decline coincided with the loss of Green’s play and leadership. Is that the case, or was it more the O-line declining, leading to Green’s decline, leading to the whole house of cards falling more quickly than it would have?

My question is

what are the chances Arrowhead gets replaced by a shiny new stadium in which the Broncos can win? I HATE the Broncos playing in Arrowhead!!!!

What is the part about Arrowhead that makes it such a tough place to play for visitors? Any thoughts?

Charlie Weis

With the rumor mill churning out “Weis-to-KC” these days, what would you guys think of that? Personally, I’d rather not see him in the AFC West as his track record as an OC in the NFL is pretty good.

Hang on folks, road's a little bumpy in these spots.

YES YES YES

I would love Weis! It would take pressure off of Haley and then maybe Crennell in the offseason? Man I would be so pumped!

I agree, history won't be a factor

I think the Broncos see this as a must win game! We lose this game and the season is probably done. I don’t think anyone wants that bad losing taste in their mouth again and the team will fight to the nth degree to make certain it doesn’t rear its ugly head again.
