Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him, but I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win. Finally, someone in the Bears' organization admits it.
Unfortunately, the apologists will continue to beat Kyle down.
7-4 vs. 4-7.
I know where I’d rather be. Give me the winner, Urlacher, just as you said, homie.

Perhaps Da Bears will give us a #1 draft pick for him. :P

Way to back your team from the bench Urlacher!
Way to blame your QB for not running the ball! …Or catching the ball. Or blocking! I miss Jay and think he’d be great in an offense like ours with A TEACHER (even Elway needed a guy to calm his ego down!) Even so KO is our QB and I’m happy with his brain and heart! These comments are just one more reason the Bears are not a winning organization!

I really don't waste too much time over worrying about what Jay's been up to....
But I gotta say that even when Kyle was having a bad string of games there, he seems to manage to game better. He has his share of mistakes but I believe overall that Kyle is better suited for this.
Can you imagine the circumstances no different than they were for us but with Cutler instead of Orton during the 4 game losing streak?

the WCG folks need to read this
there is no way the CHICAGO BEARS shouldn’t have at least 20 rushes a game. they are throwing the rock 40+ times a game and completely neglecting the run game. they put in that khalil bell fool the other night, and he rips off a 70 yard run for his first NFL rush! i understand the o-line sucks, but c’mon. ron turner is ruining jay cutler, and he’s taking the rest of the team down with him.
by lolcopter on Nov 30, 2009 9:44 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
Good point
The Bears give up on the run too easily, and never seem willing to commit to it. Part of it is uneven play from their OL but they really don’t seem to be ready to do what it takes to establish a solid running game. When you make yourself one dimensional it naturally makes you easier to defend.
And Jay is the sort of QB who, when you put the game on his shoulders and make him throw that many times a game becomes mistake prone. He needs to be allowed to set into a rhythm and let the run game buy him some space to work. That’s really the case with any QB but Cutler is at his best when he has options to work with rather than having to put on a cape and save the day, EVERY day.
But that’s just me.
Don't argue with fools. It's how they reproduce.

Correct me if I am wrong...
…but doesn’t one need an offensive line to run the ball? Chicago has the RB, but without a line to open holes for him their running game is not going to scare anyone. Add to that the lack of a credible #1 receiver and you have an offense that is going to struggle regardless of who is behind center.
It is interesting to ponder what would have happened if Chicago had kept Orton and all of those draft picks, and actually addressed what was really wrong with their team. Beef up their O line and inject some new blood into their aging defense and they might have been a contender this year. Instead, they got their Franchise Quarterback, but will be looking for a new coaching staff in a couple of months. Who ever comes in as coach will have a very difficult rebuilding project on their hands.

MHR Broadcasting Urlacher's Bloated Ego
Urlacher can’t stand to not be the top dog and here he doesn’t have the decency to keep his thoughts to himself, or within the organization, especially when he is on the sidelines.
…. and I still find it odd that MHR continues to berate Cutler like a prior spouse in a tawdry divorce… it is really unnecessary,….

I'd like the pick too!
The guaranteed money that’s being wasted on most of the really high picks has gotten to the point that it not only hamstrings the teams that can least afford to endure a highly paid bust, but it’s become an embarassment to the NFL. And we all know how well the NFL tolerates embarassment. Of course the union doesn’t want a wage scale, but given the publicity around this issue, I don’t see them playing hardball on this one.
Of course, god only knows if the new CBA will get done before the ‘10 draft or not until ’11. my guess is it won’t be any time soon. But if the Broncos could find a way to grab an extra 1st rounder in ‘11, I’d be all for it.

I don't think you guys realize the pressure Jay has been under
First trying to catch Favre’s 22 interceptions last year and falling short. Plus Delhomme called him out yesterday versus the Jets so Jay HAD TO HIT FEW DB’s yesterday.
He know has a lot of work to do to get the all time number for picks in a season. He doesn’t need some guy like Urhlacher blowing his chances at his long awaited goal.

Didn’t Jay put himself under that pressure by shooting his way out of tow? He had the chance to stay with a proven quarterback teacher, but it appears he thought he didn’t need one. No excuses for # 6.
Glad to hear Urlacher’ praise for Orton. In the last several years, I can’t recall much praise for Orton. Not even when Dude was like 10-1 his rookie year. It’s perfectly legit to enjoy this.

Jay Cutler is not the answer to the Bears' problems.
Its a shame he can’t tame his negative tendencies because he’s capable of being as good a QB as he wants to be. But, like KMA said it isn’t really our problem any more. In fact, since we have the Bears’ 1st round pick next year it isn’t a problem at all. It’s pretty cool.
And the Orton haters come out when ever the Broncos lose, and tend to disappear when they win. When you look at the record of all the other rookie coaches in the NFL (Indianapolis being the notable exception), we have nothing to be upset about here in Denver. Most teams that went through the kind of churn ours has in an offseason would be lucky to finish 4-12.
To be 7-4 at this point with five games left and still a shot at a Wild Card – I’ll take that. And I’m pretty happy with a smart, hard working team player at QB who has only six picks and a QB rating of 87.9.
I wish Jay and the bears well, I really do. Right after we cash in that draft pick.

Its the God Complex
Every where JC has been he’s been treated like a transcendent deity. He alone will carry the day. By time he reached Chicago, he seemed to believe it (See comments on how nobody knew Marshall or Royal until he came along). I honestly believe that even if JC was the classiest, nicest guy on earth, this type of thing ripples across a locker room. The guys that are positive about it start waiting for him to save the day. Other guys resent it. The overall effect is a team with less heart and less fire. Guys like Elway and Favre had the moxie and leadership ability to overcome the negative effects of being ‘the Guy’. Cutler seems to alienate, or at the very least, foster apathy.
Its a theory, at least.

since a theory implies
that something has been proven and is generally accepted as being true, I’d say that’s probably true.

Right on!
I couldn’t agree more. He’s had people telling him how great he is and telling him how nothing is his fault all through his college and Broncos days. He was handed the team as a rookie, even though the team was still in the midst of a playoff hunt. This is what happens when someone is coddled and made to feel like he can do no wrong.

Cutler Apologism 101
ron turner is ruining jay cutler
isn’t it also possible that Jay Cutler is ruining Jay Cutler ?
Jerome Bettis on Cutler (last week)
He needs to re-evaluate his game, start from the bottom with his raw skill set, and work his way back up. At some point he has to accept some blame. Look, Jay: If you smell s—- everywhere you go, it just might be you.
by Jenna Talia on Nov 30, 2009 9:52 AM MST reply actions 2 recs
he has a large part in it, yes… but there is no reason the bears had to dramatically shift their offensive philosophy because of one guy, and that’s just what they did. they just let jay throw the rock all over the place and keep their fingers crossed for the best. he gets absolutely destroyed with his current pass protection, but instead of getting him outside the pocket where he’s actually pretty good, they will do 5-step drops into a collapsed pocket and just let jay get pummeled.
jay is doing a great job sucking it up on his own, and nothing pleases me more than his shattered confidence and mounting interceptions total, but the coaching staff for that team are complete morons. they are playing jay cutler like he’s tom brady, with the surrounding cast.
run, run, bootleg. it’s obvious jay is scared to throw downfield now, and he’s was never very good at doing that in the first place. take some of the pressure of his shoulders.
having said all that, the bears are just a pathetic football team. many more problems than QB, and it’s funny that nobody (in chicago) realized this until they got their new expensive franchise toy.

what Brian Urlacher said sentence by sentence, translated for the Cutler apologists.
"Look, I love Jay, and I understand he’s a great player who can take us a long way, and I still have faith in him," Urlacher said.
Translation = “Cutler is a pussy. There I said it, and won’t deny it this time. Someone with leadership in the Bears organization had to. Did you see Cutler knock out the mic last night in the post-game interviews ? Even that microphone has bigger balls than Cutler.”
"But I hate the way our identity has changed. We used to establish the run and wear teams down and try not to make mistakes, and we’d rely on our defense to keep us in the game and make big plays to put us in position to win.
Translation = “I hate the way our identity has changed. JC isn’t just a proverbial coach killer, he also performs miracles, turning men into eunuchs.”
Kyle Orton might not be the flashiest quarterback, but the guy is a winner, and that formula worked for us. I hate to say it, but that’s the truth."

in terms of being derogatory towards women….hmmmm. thats definitely a non-football related topic, so i’m going to leave that alone, but in my defense sometimes things that are funny to you at 10:30 in the morning are insulting to an entire gender at 3:30 in the afternoon and i see what you are saying. i would never want to take direct shots at any one tho tunga and no way is this a slight to you !

Extra sensitive?
Is it because Vince Young is trying to revive the debate about who is the best QB taken in the 2006 draft? I, for one, thought Cutler slammed the door on that debate last year, but Young is trying to open the door. At least Leinart is still trying to stay out of it, though.
I have to admit, when I read Banks (?) describe Young’s drive as Elwayesque, I almost puked. It was an impressive drive, but come on… ; )

Don’t know how that Bears locker room will be able to turn their season around with statements like that coming from the face of their franchise.

I definitely know B. Urlacher is kind of a media hound
But he is expressing some valid concerns. And as much anger as I have had toward Cutler in the past, I actually think he is being misused. Not that his poor play isn’t his responsibility, it absolutely, 100% is.
However,I thought the Bears would be good because they would run run run run and play action pass with Cutler. I am honestly shocked to see how they have moved to a pass offense. I guess they fell for the JC is a God! mentality, maybe listened to the MSM too much.

Kyle Orton was never allowed to use his arm in Chicago.
Urlacher said it best; we ran the ball and let the defense mop up. Kyle coming into a scheme and system that was foreign to him and has done a pretty good job of executing plays with minamal mistakes. As Kyle get’s more a more comfortable in this offense (the one he was made for) we will see some great things out of him. We saw preview of his arm in Washington and warm things to come. His arm strength has never been his issue as some have said, it was the system he was in in Chicago. This new system to him is like learning a foreign language. It takes time to get all of the syllables lined up right. Don’t worry though, because with the improvement we have seen from him, the playbook will start to unfold a little deeper.

Accurate long pass....
He’s thrown a few accurate long passes in his last two complete games. For argument’s sake, you wanted one. The second incredible grab by Marshall was about as accurate as you can ask for. Yes, Marshall one handed it, but Kyle hit Marshall in stride down the left sideline, dropping the ball right over the defender. That ball was placed perfectly.

Orton has certainly won our hearts in Denver, there is no question, and it is good to see that although he might not capture the hearts of the MSM he is very well regarded with his current and former teammates. Well, that took a while. I’m glad he waited until after the Broncos and Cowboys won their games. Both teams are looking good, but we know we have alot of work to do-people are always going to try to derail us. Let’s just stay focused and move forward-people were down on both teams at the beginning but we’ve managed tohang around. We need a couple of more wins to get into playoffs. No person can turn a team around-whatever was wrong with the Bears was aleady there, they chose to ignore it and you can’t fix it in one offseason. They are looking at a 3-5 year building job. No one bought the receivers they had because we knew it wouldn’t work-we invested in receivers and they paid off. What good is having people like Orton and Romo if we don’t give them anyone to throw to? Yes, they’ve both stumbled but they found their way back to winning ways. Jay Cutler can’t fix the bears, they don’t spend money like that…they never have. He has gotten himself into a MESS and now he’s stuck.
Hopefully the Broncos and Cowboys will go deep into the playoffs BUT even if they don’t they’ve made us proud to be fans.

Cutler is the reason!
There is a reason the the Bears are throwing so much or did everyone forget what kind of player Jay is? He is a crybaby , give me the rock kind of player, period. If he had to throw the ball 15 -20 times a game and let them run it 40 he would pout and whine forever. Remember a game last year when Shannie had him manage the game(don’t remember the team) and he did not like it at all to reign things in. And after he said no way he would play like that. That is what Jaybaby is all about. Let me throw, let me win, let me be the man. Even though he is not all that good as we are seeing this year. Chicago is screwed with him there and it is only going to get worse. Enjoy Chi-Town!!!!! I told you it was going to happen this way, be careful what you wish for. !!!!!

I agree, and more importantly, I think McD and Bowlen agree with you. That’s why J. Cutler is gone, gone, gone like the setting sun. It’s easy to see the sweet way he can throw the rock, not so easy to see the rest of the story. I’m so glad our coach and owner saw through the hype. I’ll be glad for a long time.

I thought the same thing
They are ripe to be upset by the Lions in what is looking like an increasingly intriguing QB comparison. Stafford reminds me a lot of Cutler, only it looks like Stafford might have a little more mental toughness, at least based on his very limited sample size. Other than that, they both have the big arm, the same type of mobility, the same ‘gunslinger’ mentality.

Cutler...
is, as usual, the lightning rod of our site. As soon as his name pops up, it stirs up all kinds of interesting reactions.
Anyways, even though I’m a Cutler apologist, I’ll have to say he’s deserved the criticism. He’s been playing horribly in the last 5-6 weeks and there’s equal blame to go around on that team, but he is not immune to it. I like the Bettis advice… and the advice of countless other MSM folks… he needs to take a good look at himself in the mirror and fix some of the issues that is plaguing his game, starting with those issues that are messing with that noggin of his.
At the beginning of the year, I thought this would be his breakout year. But I am fairly disappointed that he has regressed so badly. The stats I throw out to friends and a few times here is that in 2.5 years with Denver he only had a 3-INT game once, while in 11 games with Chicago he’s already piled up 3, 4, and 5-pick games. Sure there is a sizeable dropoff in surrounding talent, but with my eyes I see a completely different QB from years past. Worse than that is that I see a QB that is no longer confident in his game…
For the sake of all my Bears friends here in Chicago, I hope that kid can turn things around soon…
That draft pick is looking pretty awesome atm…. #8 – #11 if the season ended today.

I know Urlacher is a team leader and he’s pissed off about losing but he’s kinda throwing his OC and QB under the bus. He should be a pro about this and keep it in house. I don’t see how he could think this wouldn’t offend anyone and create even more problems. And he claims that the D is the strong point of the team? I don’t know if he’s been watching but they gave up over 500 yards against Minn. Jay is playing poorly yes, but there is a lack of talent at every position on that team. No O-line, no pass rush, no safeties, no receivers. There are big problems in Chicago and Cutler is one of them, but so is the D. And if they had Orton, with that O-line and those receivers, he wouldn’t be winning so much either. All quarterbacks are the same, they can’t do it by themselves. They need talent around them.

The talent Cutler has
Is roughly the same talent Orton had last year, when he had a winning record and threw fewer INTs for the season than Culter has already.
If you read the whole article, though, Urlacher later talks about what a rare talent Cutler is, so I don’t think he was completely throwing him under.

Thanks.
Don’t know how I forgot that. As someone else pointed out, he was playing at arguably a Pro Bowl (especially in the NFC) level before the injury. He then came back from the injury too early, because he is a tough, gutsy, team-first guy. I will take a guy like that any day…

I DO agree with you...
…that Urlacher should keep his negative comments in house. I agree with you, that team leaders shouldn’t air the team’s issues so publicly.

everyone in the organization already?

I don't know that he has,
but I DO know that he is now airing them to a member of the MSM. Whether he has or has not aired them with everyone in his organization already, I don’t think a good leader then slams teammates to a reporter. Kind of like when Dawkins was asked what happened during the players only meeting, and he responded something to the effect that what happens in the locker room is for those people in the locker room.

If you doubt Urlacher is a true leader for the Bears.....
you don’t know Chicago football….Urlacher has been the face of that organization for the last 9 years…..no one is more respected than him in that locker room and if he airs his feelings in the press then something tells me its a real desperate time in Chicago right now and its calling for desperate measures…..
Another thing people are missing is the fact that Urlacher is talking about accountability!!!!!!!! Something that has never been forced on Jay. Something that Dawkins firmly believes in….Up to this point everyone has been making excuses for #6 and his shoddy play, you can only dodge the proverbial poo splattering off the fan for so long!

That makes sense.
I’m not expressing myself very well today. I have no doubt Urlacher is a leader on that team, and has been one for some time. As someone who has historically been a team leader — and by all accounts a good one — I didn’t think it was in character for him to so publicly take veiled shots at his team. But the way you put it makes perfect sense, that it must mean things are really bad there. I, for one, think this is the kind of kick in the ass Cutler needs.

has it right. Brian rarely opens up to the press. He is the locker room. He’s going after Jerry Angelo imo. JA is the cancer in the Bears organization that must be removed.

?
Do you think the Cutler investment will be the thing that finally pushes the McCaskeys to remove JA? As in, the McCaskeys seeing that they’ve made this huge investment in Cutler, they will try to give JA’s power to someone who will do a better job with it?

exactly right
Urlacher sees exactly what the problem is, and it is that the Bears got away from mistake free, ball control football in order to pursue the wet dream of a high flying but mistake prone offense. It took Brees and Manning YEARS to develop the offensive chemistry and knowledge, and they both started from higher points than Cutler had to start with in Chicago. When the Bears acquired Cutler, they were in a prime position to build a team very similar to what Pittsburgh has right now with Big Ben, but they betrayed their identity, and in the process they alienated the majority of their team, which was built to accommodate the philosophy they threw out the window.
If anyone threw somebody under a bus it was Angelo (with Lovie as his enabler) when he threw the character of the Bears organization out. Just because they acquired Cutler didn’t mean they had to use him the way he has always been used. They should have acquired some old school, hard-ass QB coach who would keep Cutler on a short leash, like some kind of laser strike, long bomb throwing doberman… and then unleash him when he was needed.
Precision in thought, concision in style, decision in life.

Orton had just as bad an offensive line last year with the Bears, in fact I would say the Bears OL is a slight improvement over the OL that Orton play with last year (Pace and Williams is a slight improvement over Tait and St Clair) and Cutler had far better receivers with the Bears than Orton had last year (Bennett and Knox is much better than Booker and Lloyd).
The Bears defense last year was just as bad and they lost 3 huge game with the lead in the 4th quater, so the argument that Orton could’nt have done much with this OL of the Bears this year is just an excuse.
Orton did more with much less, last year Orton was 9-6 with a bad ankle that should have sideline him for 6 weeks. before his injury, Orton had a 90 passer rating and very low number of turn over. Orton also inlvolve Forte into the game, the Bears did not run block well last year but Forte look so good because Orton was using him a lot and so Forte had lots of touches and was very effective in the Bears offense. This year, Forte had become invisible with Cutler under the center.Sorry but Urlacher was right, Orton is a much better fit for the Bears (and Broncos) and he is cheap, the Bears could have sign at least two good FA with the money that they paid Cutler and the Bears don’t even have any draft pick to compensate for a horrible season.

We could think of it this way
Cuttles is goin’ undercover for us. This trade was like… getting nothing but sexy goods (Knowshon and First rounder this year), getting KO, and losing a turnover prone QB.
All’s well for us in that trade so far. This upcoming draft should be very interesting thanks to Cuttles.

Nice statement by Urlacher.
He IS a winner and that works for me. He even did it with a line that isn’t as good as ours, so that says a lot about Orton.
As far as the team changing their philosophy, that is the way it is going to be with Jay there until he learns and they just dink and dunk it down the field. It if funny how they mentioned the Bears defense when the trade went through.

Urlacher days...
Reading this comment just proves one thing, the group of guys that went to the Super Bowl are done. Urlacher hasn’t been relevant since the SB and has had his performance vary due to personal injury, decline in play and loss of depth/talent.
There is no denying that Cutler has stunk it up but Urlacher hasn’t been relevant and this sorta rant doesn’t help his team or his image, which to me is an above average player blessed with scheme, talent and the history/tradition associated when anyone plays for the Bears.
Wonder who Denver drafts with the Bears pick.

What?! Urlacher is the core of that Defense...
Urlacher is the main reason why that defense if suffering. Yes he has not made as many big plays in the last few years as he did in the early part of his career, but that is cause he has to support the lack of secondary on that team.
His comments are some of the best about this team all year. He is a leader on that team and has been for most of his career. The player should listen to what he is saying cause they are true.

Jeff George
one difference between Jeff and Jay. The chip on Jeff George’s shoulder was not nearly as big as the one Jay has been sporting. what Jay has done in Chicago is a repeat of what he did in Denver. Throw some incredible passes now and then but red zone turnovers and interceptions are his greatest assets

IMO, Uhrl was
a) not condemning JC , just not giving him props,
b) giving props to KO being a consistent, system oriented and team oriented player, and
3) calling out his coaching staff, especially OC for letting the team identity change.
I don’t think he was throwing JC under the bus as much as some of the comments seem to believe, but was throwing the team’s offnesive concept (ie, coaches) under the train.
Our comments here at MHR seem (to me) to be flavored by each of our respective views of the whole JC-Bronco divorce. My view; JC would be neither consistent nor coachable in our present offensive system……..too bad, because if he had been both, his ability to extend a play and throw well on the run would add another dimension that would have been hard to defend. BTW, anybody know why Chicago doesn’t seem to have a designed roll-out in their playbook?
