Horse Tracks 11/4/09 - Orton has sore left ankle; Broncos add two to PS, bringing back DT Carlton Powell

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning, MHR Friends! Try not to lose much sleep over Darius Walker - I know a lot of folks liked what they saw from him in the preseason, but he gained his yards in garbage time against second- and third-teamers and still managed only 3.8 YPA. He's merely this year's version of Anthony Alridge, sans blazing speed. On an editing note, I feel like I've got to tighten up Tracks a bit; a return to quality over quantity (and more blurbs to help you decide which columns you want to read before you click on them). So I'm going to run some polls over the next few days - I need your help (because obviously what you want is what really matters, here). Don't worry, this doesn't mean I'll decrease the amount of Broncos-centric news. It's more a matter of the other stuff... Please be honest, as your input will help me improve Tracks and determine its direction. Thanks!

LTC - Orton thrives with Broncos, rookie coach - Brian Howell
"I’ve learned a lot," he said. "I think I’m a better player. The coaching has been great, and they’re making me a better player. I think this is the system that fits me." Sounds to me like a player who knows where his bread is buttered (hometown discount at contract time?). Then again, we don't really know how McD will value Kyle at a much higher price (versus his current $995,000 salary). Maybe he'll like Brandstater's value better...

DPP - Broncos rookie Moreno learning on job - Mike Klis
Although he's on pace for over 1,100 yards from scrimmage (very good for a rookie, especially as part of a backfield tandem), Knowshon is yet to break a run of 20+ yards. However, as Moreno himself says, "I didn't really have too many big runs at Georgia, either. It's all about those hard yards."

DPP - Defense ready for no-huddle from Steelers - Jeff Legwold
"Quarterback Kyle Orton may show up on the Broncos' injury report this week because of a twisted left ankle he suffered in Sunday's loss in Baltimore. Orton was hit by Ravens outside linebacker Terrell Suggs in the second quarter and played the rest of the way with the ankle wrapped. Orton received treatment on the ankle Monday and Tuesday"

DB - Ball, Powell Added to Practice Squad - Gray Caldwell

NFLN - Playbook: Broncos vs. Ravens recap - Video

"Every time Mangini was given more responsibility in New England, he was not successful. Conversely, every time Josh McDaniels’ role was increased, he kept getting more and more successful." I don't know how the chatter between the Bears QB and Cleveland defensive coordinator Rob Ryan started this week, but it's just not the way Jay should carry himself. Play the game. Rob Ryan can't make a play; he can't kick your butt on the field. So it shows a complete lack of class to bring him into the fray."

Here's a question...

Who gives a crap what Josh McDaniels had to do with “Spygate?” Why has this just question now become column-worthy? If it mattered, shouldn’t it have been piled on to the rest of the “who-the-hell-is-this-kid?” stuff that was written when he was hired?

I’m not a journalist or anything, of course. There may be some high-minded concept I am missing here, because I’m just some Simple Simon analyst who watches game video. Do they teach you in journalism school to sit on “concerns” over widely-reported events which happened a few years in the past, which may or may not have involved the subject, and whose only functional purpose is to cast aspersions upon said subject? Is this concept of highfalutin journalism called the Slow News Day principle, maybe?

Thanks for all you do Doug. I personally like your blurbs the best of all.

Thanks, Ted

Noted and appreciated.

I agree; bizarre timing to bring up Spygate – it’s in response to some random email rather than driven by real, actual news.

It is all about timing.

People wait til the more opportune time to reveal info about a player/coach that may raise doubts about that person.

With respect

to how much time it must take you to pull all of this together, I do appreciate the options on AFC west news, and usually read about half of it. If it means an easier job for you, I wouldn’t miss the options, but it’s nice to have them.

Thanks, E

I’m actually not looking to make Tracks easier for myself (less time-consuming). I’m looking more to make it better, as I feel my OCD need to get EVERYTHING has turned it into more of a overwhelmingly-large link dump that’s harder to navigate. I don’t want to do the work of a robot; I’d prefer that Tracks be something people enjoy…

I will trust you to adapt Horse Tracks as you see fit and enjoy it. I like the AFC News. I think the Opinion stuff could be shortened but, again I trust your judgement. Also, I don’t care for the Power Rankings as they don’t make a difference to my thinking. Kind of like, I don’t care much for a lot of those opinions over my own. I really like having the options laid out and like Ted stated, the blurbs make my morning. Consider Horse Tracks Rec’d ad infinitum.

You're going to make Tubbs' job easier.

Today’s version is an abbreviated Horse Tracks? Could have fooled me.

Just remember, the shorter you make it the easier for Bill Williamson to plagiarize.

I vote shorter, just so long as you keep links to the AFC West and our upcoming opponent.

This is my favorite website.

Jerome Bettis’s piece about Cutler’s trash talking is one sided. Rob and Rex Ryan both love to run their mouths (i.e. Channing Crowder vs. the Rex Ryan this offseason). Considering Miami pinned two losses on the Jets and Chicago put a beat down on Cleveland, maybe the Ryan boys should learn to shut their fat pie holes once in a blue moon. The Ryan boys love to talk endless smack, but they do jack squat to back it up.

Cutler is not the kind of guy to walk away from a some chunky clown running his mouth. Jay’s not that mature. But like Channing Crowder, Jay got the better of the trash talking feud.

This is my favorite website.

My thoughts

To be honest, I don’t really read anything that doesn’t have to do with the Broncos. Only time I read anything from the Options is when a Bronco is mentioned. I don’t have the time to read through everything about the NFL during work, but I MUST catch up on anything Bronco.

First I hope that Orton’s ankle is minor and won’t affect him too much. I know after the Ravens’ game we will prepare for the no huddle by the Steelers, however how about our no huddle offense? I think using that could help us out as well. Come on McDaniels, you gotta have something up your sleeve for the Steelers.

Practice Squad

I am not unhappy about Darius Walker being cut. I am happy Carlton Powell is getting another chance. Sorry to hear about Everette Pedescleaux.

Tale of the Tape:

  • Lance Ball – Height: 5-9 Weight: 220 Age: 24 (originally UDFA Rams, also on Colts and Titans)
  • Darius Walker – Height: 5-11 Weight: 205 Age: 24 (originally UDFA Texans)

Looks to me like Lance Ball is a bowling ball type runner given his height and weight.

re: Ball

I’ve been looking around for information on Ball, partly out of curiosity and partly because I believe that RB is an area that we’re evaluating. The bye week provided time to evaluate the team’s performance and one obvious result of that evaluation is our new punter. There have also been problems with our running game although they aren’t solely or even primarily with the RBs themselves since our OL has had some problems in run blocking, but we can still improve on the RBs’ performance nonetheless.

I’ve been pondering how to ‘fill out’ our RB corps for a while now. One of the problems or dilemmas with a one-back set is finding the correct balance between power and speed, along with a balance of whatever other attributes you wish to utilize. Roster limitations make carrying too many extra personnel impossible from a practical point of view, so what kind of RB do you carry?

Neither Jordan nor Hillis is currently making a significant contribution, and we really need to get a significant contribution from that position (i.e., 3rd & 4th string RB). Depth is important given the wear and tear at RB but there is a need for something more than a replacement once the starter(s) go down. Moreover, in a RBC system, much of the wear and tear is alleviated by sharing the burden.

I’ve been a fan of Hillis since we drafted him but I’m not shy about re-examining the question of how one “fills out” the RB corps. This is also a relevant subject for draft discussions. And most of all, it’s an area that McDaniels & Xanders are probably evaluating since our running game has not performed as well as it could.

I’ll cut to the chase — Ball is the perfect type of RB for us, although he himself may not be the solution. See the scouting report on him HERE:

POSITIVES: Hard-running, one-speed ball-carrier who picks up the tough yardage. Runs with good lean, displays solid vision, and quickly finds the hole. Displays straight-ahead running power, bounces off tackles, and keeps his feet moving. Picks up a lot of yardage off initial contact and falls forward when tackled. Can cut back in a small area and adequate catching the ball out of the backfield.

Anyone who saw Ray Rice perform last Sunday should be able to understand why I like this kind of RB. The epitome of this style of RB is Maurice Jones-Drew. Being 5’9 and weighing 220 lbs. creates difficulties for the defense. It’s not that the RB can’t be bigger but the ones that are — such as Jordan — are often slow and can’t hide behind their blockers.

Ball himself may not be the answer but a back around his size and possessing certain traits, such as being a downhill runner, seems to a good solution for how we could “fill out” our RB corps.

no goats, no glory.

One from the Broncos archives

Found this on YouTube. Broncos vs Chiefs on Monday night Football in 1994. A shootout game, fun to watch. But what also stood out, I’d forgotten what a weak backfield Denver had that year. Glyn Milburn and Leonard Russell?

Makes me appreciate having Knowshon and Buck this year and some of the guys we’ve had over the last ten years.

(PS the continuation parts of that game are linked on the YouTube right side.)

Dude, seriously?

This is one of the most PAINFUL games I have ever seen. They seem to show highlights from it on every other MNF game, and every single time they talk about the greatest MNF games of all time, this is on the list. I have seen that Montana-to-Davis TD approximately 1,000 times over the past 15 years, and only once (the first time) by choice.

Doug, great work everyday!

I’ll give my two cents here……I love all the Broncs stuff. I don’t read too much of the AFC West stuff, but I do enjoy reading the headlines to get a feel for storylines. Your comments always play an important role in directing me to an article. For the weekly opponent, I will only read something if it addresses their attitude, a coaches attitude, or some quality/deficiency of the team I am interested in. Most of the player moves and other facts I avoid.

As for the other stuff, I am really grateful for you links. I end up reading almost all the Bronco news and then several selected columnists who I would never catch if you did not post the link. For instance, Lombardi and Bettis, I love their articles and insights. Never would have found ’em w/o you. I also like B.Simmons of ESPN page 2 who I found through Tracks. These guys especially and some others occasionally, I am extremely grateful to have a one-stop place to go.

If you wanted to cut down on the number of links, then I would recommend just picking one article from each outlet that addresses something more than just a transaction or injury. I feel like that news (transactional) can be found on any site (nfl.com, nationalfootballpost.com or profootballtalk) for those looking for that info. The insightful pieces (no, not Spygate and McD) should always get a post…..I hope! If you just post one to each outlet, then, if I’m in a serious searching mood, I know where to go for more info.

Kudos for all your work!

Thanks for the great service to us!

Thanks Doug. Here is my 2 cents.

I look for the Broncos news firstly, and I really would love it if you add more comments and even opinions on the articles. Which ones are good to read etc.

Secondly I really love the summary of Power Rankings. That is great.

The third most interesting to me would be the coming opponents, ecpecially articles where the Broncos are discussed by the “enemies” (both before and after the game). That give another perspective that I find refreshing sometimes.

Lastly I also look for general NFL news, maybe a little more focused towards AFC. Ofcourse you don’t want to miss “big stories” like the old one un-retiring again and such.

In summary, thanks a million!
