Ask a Steelers fan

I've been "trolling" around the MHR boards since the beginning of the week and was waiting for another Steelers fan to make this post.  However, since I haven't seen one and it's hump day Wednesday, I figured I'd hop on it.

We have quite a nice game set up for us on prime time football, Monday night.  The 5-2, defending champ, Pittsburgh Steelers head into Mile High to take on the revamped 6-1 Denver Broncos who are coming off a tough loss in Baltimore Ravens.  Clearly, after the bad loss the Broncos will be fired up and ready to knock some helmets around.  However, the Steelers sit at 5-2, tied in their division, and do not have the tiebreaker against the Cincinnati Bengals.  Their division just got tougher as Baltimore put them self in the race.  Every game has become crucial in the AFC North..  Therefore, both teams will be fired up and ready to play some gosh darn good football.

I could not be more excited about this one.  Two very stout and physical defenses.  That means a lot of hard hitting and a seemingly low scoring, close game.  Most fans enjoy a lot of points, but as a Steelers fan over the years I have learned to embrace low scoring and hard fought wins/losses.

Anyway, do you have questions about the Steelers personel, injuries, past games, etc?  Shoot them at me and I will offer up my opinions (and probably more Steelers fans will join in).  I won't respond to pointless and offensive trashtalk, but I do not mind if its friendly.  I will try not to be too bias, but as I am sure you know, its hard not to be when you have a passion for your team.

Ask away!

thanks for stopping by!

Here are a couple of questions

1. What are some specific areas of improvement you will be looking for coming out of a bye week?

2. Watching the Steelers-Vikings game, it seemed like your offense struggled quite a a bit. What do you expect from the gameplan against an aggressive Broncos defense?

by dwr on Nov 4, 2009 7:52 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

1. First and foremost: Health. The Steelers had a lot of bumps and bruises to heal up, specifically Troy Polamalu, Lawrence Timmons, and Travis Kirschke. I don’t think Travis will be a go on Monday, but I hope to see Troy and Timmons at 100%.

Secondly, I’d like to see the offense balance it self out a bit more. A lot of teams know we are pass first now, so I think we should start “hitting teams in the mouth” and running the ball more often. Then once we make them respect the run we can put the ball back in the hands of our best player.

Thirdly, I am hoping that fumbles with FWP and the Spin Doctor were addressed. We need both of those guys to be running had and holding onto the ball when we need it most. Moore is able to hold on to the ball very well, but does not have the potential that FWP or Mendy have.

2. I expect us to run the ball early and often. Hopefully, that will force more defenders in the box and open up play action. Additionally, I’d expect the offense to come out with a lot of quick plays, like slants, screens, and passes out of the flat to get things rolling. Hopefully, Bruce Arians (our OC) has made the necessary adjustments to improve on our offense. It has a lot of potential, but seems to be stalling out (especially late in games), and I think the play calling can be to blame.

Who plays? Nick Eason? Ziggy Hood? Got any confidence in either of them?

Actually

They have been playing a 3-man rotation since Aaron Smith was lost for the year. Both will play, and both are just as good. We have a lot of depth on the defensive line.

We actually have pretty good depth at D-line.

Ra’shon Harris, and yes, Nicholas Eason and Evander Hood should be our D-line by committee. Keep in mind, our “cobbled together” D-line kept the NFL’s best player in check last week with a mere 69 yards on the ground, and 14 other yards by C. Taylor (no slouch either).

Well, whoever was first.....

thanks for your answers. aaron Smith was a tough loss, but we’ve lost our starting RT (Ryan Harris) for three weeks so maybe it’ll even out. I remember Eason – drafted by the Broncos about 6 years ago out of Clemson (but not good enough to make the Broncos ;-)

I stand corrected.

Though the tone of the posts I read was well-reasoned and respectful… So it still doesn’t really qualify as trolling.

I think it says something about our society that there’s a word for “lurking” and “trolling,” but not for “participating in discourse in a thoughtful and respectful manner.”

Yeah I used troll as a more tongue-and-cheek substitute word, because I know a lot of bloggers are quick to dub any outsider fan a troll. I try to keep it respectful, because I have seen my fair share of bad sports on here and in playing sports. It does not flatter them, so I would never act like that.

Do you think he should play? Or do you think it’s too much of a risk and he should just sit this one out?

No

He should not play. As much as I love Clark and believe he is essential to our defensive, I just don’t believe its worth it. 60 minutes of football is not worth the tens of years of life Clark has left. I understand having a passion for your profession or something you are good at, but you have to draw the line if that thing threatens your life.

Agreed. Wasn't he close to losing his life last time?

I sure hope he doesn’t come to Denver, for his own safety. As much as I’d love to have the broncos play the steelers at full strength with no injuries, this game is not worth him risking his life and he should stay home.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Totally agree - I hope he stays home and doesn't get crap for it

As passionate as we are as fans who love our teams and want them to win, a situation like Clark’s really makes you pause – and gives perspective on it just being a game. If there is a risk that he could have a repeat of last time, don’t even mess with it. There are a lot of games left in the season he can play that won’t be at altitude.

"Take what you can. Give nothing back!"

I don't think he will get crap for it.

I think it was Hines Ward who said something about it in an interview. He said he would completely understand if Clark didn’t make the trip to Denver.

I really doubt that anybody in Pittsburgh will give him crap for not going. Clark’s life is worth more than this football game.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Joking aside, how do you think you can match up with our WR, the Steelers have had a hard time with big and physical WR, do you think you can contain BM?

I expect the CB's to play close

and jam at the line, giving our front 7 a second more to get to Neckbeard. We have the best safety in the league helping out, and Ike is the real deal as a shut-down. The only success you may have is on the other side with Gay, but he won’t be covering Marshall (god forbid).

Sorry if my memory is slipping me, but what hard and physical WR has given us trouble? We held V Jacks to 4 recs for 50 yards. Rice had the best game as a WR against us, but I seem him more as a speedy jumper.

Anyway, BM will probably be blanketed by Ike Taylor. Many people don’t know much about Taylor but he is a great shut down CB. I expect him and Ike to be in each others face all day. I think he can definitely contain BM, especially if our pass rush is getting to the QB early and often.

Larry Fitzgerald in the SB single handley almost won that game

This season:

S. Rice 136 yds
A. Gates 124 yds

Just saying, the team seems to have a hard time matching up with those types of WR.

As I said, Rice is more of a quick, speedster, not a big and physical guy and Gates is a TE, so that’s a whole different story.

Gates plays more like a WR, though.

I think between Graham, Scheffler, and Marshall, there will be enough big bodied dudes out there catching the ball for the bronco offense, much the same way that Gates did.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Keep in mind Gates caught a lot of his passes over the center in a defense missing its King. But if you do beat us, you are going to do it in the air. We just don’t give up anything on the ground.

Likewise,

We stuff the run pretty good too. Broncos stopped the Ravens in the backfield plenty of times on Sunday. Flacco was able to overcome the long yardage situations.

I know Ben can do the same thing since my wife is from Pittsburgh and I follow the Steelers as well.

It should be an interesting matchup… I just hope it doesn’t come down to special teams…. I just noticed that it looks like both teams have given up TDs on kickoff returns in two games this season!

by tyardrich on Nov 4, 2009 11:21 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Gates is a TE, and we were covering him with LB’s since that is normally Troy’s cover and Troy was out.

Rice gave us trouble, because Favre had time to get him downfield. That opened up the short game, if you have time to throw you can kill our pass defense.

Fitzgerald went off. And being from Pittsburgh I’m going to invoke that there are some receivers that can outplay any defender covering them. That’s what he did. Also Kurt Warner was throwing beautiful passes and they were mixing mid and deep throws.

Orton doesn’t pose the threat that Favre and Warner do one deep passes. Ike versus Marshal should be good, but I don’t think Marshal kills us.

1. IMO, a big part of the reason why Baltimore was able to beat us were their two massive DTs up front. I know you guys like your LBs; we like our Tackles (don’t count our backup RT, Polumbus, out). We’ll call that a wash. What is your front line like?

2. I’m an Illini fan, and I don’t like Mendenhall. Never thought he should have gone out for the NFL last year. He has shown flashes this season, but overall I remain very skeptical. What’s the sentiment on him over in Steeltown?

3. What Broncos player scares you the most (i.e., the “gamebreaker”)?

1. Our line is very good, quite obviously, since we are holding teams to under 100 rushing yards per game. Casey “Big Snack” Hampton is a beast and generally requires two blockers to contain him. He frees up a lot of space for Farrior and Timmons to do work. Of our DEs, we are missing Aaron Smith for the year, but have 3 capable back ups who play in a 3 man rotation, Ziggy Hood, Travis Kirschke, and Nick Eason. Mostly likely, you will not see Kirschke due to an injury sustained in the Vikes game. Over on the other side we have a beast in Brett Keisel. Our line is just as physical and threatening as the Ravens. Don’t expect a drop off there.

2. He is good, he has potential to be our premiere back. However, if he does not start to protect the ball, his name will fade faster than Michael Vick’s career after the dog fighting scandal.

3. Eddie Royal. Not as a WR, but as a returner. In our last two contests we have given up two big returns (Josh Cribbs and Percy Harvin) when the other team needed it very badly. And otherwise, our ST coverage has seemed pretty poor. If the Steelers ST coverage did not fix something over the bye I would not be surprised to see Royal take one to the house.

This is why I think we need to go back to the ZB scheme, permanantly.

With the big guys in the middle, it’s going to be really hard to run the ball without zone blocking. Our offensive line is too small to run traps and counters against the steelers defense.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 4, 2009 9:46 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

To be fair, it’s hard to run against any team that makes stopping the run its first priority. Typically the run can be shut down if that is the concentration. That’s a lesson that the steelers learned after more than a decade of losing in the playoffs.

You sure Ike isn’t reacquainting himself with his fingers, he certainly doesn’t use them for catching. - Brian (DaBolts) on "Face Me Ike"

by steelguy99 on Nov 5, 2009 7:02 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Disagreed.

If you can run the ball effectively and seal your blocks, you can run on any team. The zone blocking scheme is great against aggressive defenses such as the Steelers and Ravens (we didn’t run a lot of it last week). It starts out one way and relies on overpursuit to make a cutback lane. If the defense doesn’t overpursue, the RB just takes it outside the blockers or cuts it back wherever a lane has occurred.

Sure, it won’t be like running against the browns or raiders or bad teams like that. We won’t be able to run 400 yards on you guys, but with a zone blocking scheme we have a better chance to break one hundred yards and make you bring an extra defender into the box.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 5, 2009 12:49 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

If you can run the ball effectively and seal your blocks, you can run on any team.

Historically I don’t see that that is reality.

The steelers and ravens are not “aggressive defenses”, though you could peg the ravens as moreso than the steelers. It’s a term thrown out by the media and has little bearing in reality.

The steelers are a very, very disciplined defense. The first responsibility of the linemen are to stay in their gaps, and they do this very well. ZBS only works if there are running lanes and gaps, and typically the steelers do not allow those. It works against less-disciplined defenses but has a much harder time against teams which maintain gap integrity.

You sure Ike isn’t reacquainting himself with his fingers, he certainly doesn’t use them for catching. - Brian (DaBolts) on "Face Me Ike"

by steelguy99 on Nov 6, 2009 5:06 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Not sure that I agree

Let’s do this – amend the entire issue of whether or not the Steelers are disciplined (they are, of course). the reason I say that is that it’s not necessarily of much help, if the ZB scheme is run properly.

The goal of the ZB scheme is to create gaps by moving disciplined players out of theirs and creating holes. Done right, it will work against any coverage. In fact, it’s often the best approach to the 3-4 – even LeBeau’s Zone Blitz version (which I adore). The reason is that the second blocker hits a double-teamed defensive lineman on the outside of his thigh, along the femoral nerve and the ileo-tibial band (Yes, I know. The femoral artery is on the inside and the femoral nerve is on the outside. That’s Ok – they’re both along the femur). It hurts like the dickens. Even great big, talented players become less nimble for a few seconds. It’s physiology. and, it creates a gap that a RB player can slide through.

Because of this, gap control and discipline really aren’t issues. Of course PITT is good at that – it’s won you well-deserved SBs. But that doesn’t change the use, application or efficacy of the ZB scheme. Happily for Pitt (and everyone else) the Broncos are running the ZB scheme less and not getting the same results. Josh McD wants to go bigger on his O lineman (Which I like) and he wants to do more gap/regular and even some power blocking. Right now, our players are very good, but that’s still not their best technique.

Moreno/Buckhalter in '09

by Emmett Smith on Nov 7, 2009 11:04 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Our fans have been saying the opposite all year, that we need to go back to a power blocking scheme.

As for stuffing the run, if we can jam the middle which we have been doing pretty well you have to beat Troy on the outside runs. You won’t have great success running at Ike Taylor or Troy, so the middle of the line is where you need to establish your running game. That’s how the Lions did so well against us, got the inside runs going. You should have a chance to do that, as we are down a decent amount of players on DL and now Timmons might not play. If you can get some long drives and wear guys down on our side our lack of depth will cause trouble for us.

Some quick follow-up questions...

1. Are your D-linemen more “plugging” guys or “penetrating” guys? I think that much of the reason why Ngata & Co. were so effective was that they brought their own pressure, instead of simply tying up blockers and then letting others take the sack. By way of example, we have the latter on our side: Ronald Fields never gets sacks, but Doom does.

2. How do you see his running style? Honestly, I just have never seen the potential you describe. I see him as being much like Jonathan Stewart’s style, but without the quickness.

3. Here’s hoping we see more of that! Honestly, I think that SD was an abberation on the year. I love the Broncos, but that’s the way I see it. Royal hasn’t done much at all in the return game outside of that one week.

1. Their primary goal is to eat up blockers. However, they can get to the QB if need be, Hampton and Kiesel both have sacks this year. We prefer to have our LBs chasing the QB because they are faster on foot.

2. He is a power back with quick feet. Of course, he is not a power back like Jacobs or Barber, but he can still hit. We call him the Spin Doctor or Spin-den-hall because of his very nice spin moves. He always has some other nice jukes. But he has problems running two high and holding on to the ball. Those are not ideal for the skill sets I just listed.

3. Well I hope his streak of doing nothing continues!

The Steelers record at Mile High is 4-9-1

The best bet for the Broncos is to play ground control football and pick up the 1st downs to continue drives early. The Steelers will come out like the Ravens did last week, very strong and attacking, but the altitude will wear on them as the game progresses. By the 4th qtr if we have the lead it will be very difficult for Pittsburg to survive. The playoff game in 2005 was an example of what the Steelers have to do in order to win, but they are facing a much better defense in the Broncos this time around. Good luck in the future Johnny_S and SteelFever, just not in this game.

Wearing down the front 7 on defense is a big part of this game. We are down 2 of our top 3 DE, and possibly a starting ILB as well as Ryan Clark. If Troy still isn’t 100% that’s a lot of bodies in the middle missing, and not much to cover for them.

Our backups have stepped up and played well, but if you can extend drives and wear down the front the altitude and depth issues should open up a lot of space to run.

From reading some of the commentary on your fine Steel Curtain site, it seems a lot of Steeler fans are making assumptions about the Broncos based on their (admittedly poor) game vs. Baltimore. Which of course is their right, I think the Broncos would be the first to tell you that they were outplayed in all facets of the game against a hungry Ravens team and haven’t been outplayed in that regard in any of their other games this season. Anyway. clearly the Steelers will study that game tape and try to do some of the same things the Ravens did in that game, see if the Broncos adapt.

So what do you think the Steelers will do similarly to the Ravens, and do you see areas in matchups where the Steelers will either have an easy time of it or have a harder time of it?

Also just curious how many of the other Broncos games this season you’ve watched? (I know you saw some of the Fist Pump Game ;-) ) I’ve seen two of the Steelers games and of course found them as well-coached as always. I expect them to be in just about any game they play. I also have seen how they’ve missed Polamalu, who scares the crap out of me.

Cheers.

I think I have seen two Broncos games, at least that I can recall. That pats game and the chargers game. However, I do watch a lot of their highlights and analyze their stats because I have Orton on two of my fantasy teams. That did not bode well for me this week, oh well. I wish I could have seen more, especially now, but I only have so much time.

Well for many years now, the Steelers and the Ravens have been two teams built out of the same exact mold. Primarily, we are based on very, very good, hard-hitting defenses. Specifically, our pass rushes are generally very scary for opposing offenses, not only because of the personnel, but because of the complex blitz schemes our DCs create. Then when you have two of the best safeties in the league that are extremely unpredictable, it makes a very long day for any QB.

You should expect to see a very similar game plan from the Steelers. Lots of blitzing and we will try to shut out Marshall with Ike (a split there). I expect Harrison to have a quiet day, but Woodley to expose your back up RT (I think that is a very favorable match-up for us).

I haven’t said much about the offense, because game in and game out I am confused by our offensive identity. One game we are pass pass pass. The next we run a dozen reverses. Then the next we run run run, until the 4th quarter then we start passing? The consistency has not been there, even though our offense is very strong no matter what we decide to do. I think the battle of our offense vs. your defense is the most intriguing match up of the game. I just don’t know what to expect from them after the bye.

Thanks!

Good points. And I could see this being a close high scoring game, or a low scoring game…
And yah, the one thing I am worried about is not having Ryan Harris in at RT. That could be exposed by the Steelers, though Polumbus is actually pretty good. Still, I would expect the Broncos to try to help him out by giving an extra protector at TE or at FB. Protecting Orton is key and if that side is porous on Monday it could indeed be a tough one for the Broncos’ offense. Both teams have had special teams struggles so how well that side steps it up could also be a key to the game. Broncos have some potentially good returners but haven’t been consistent there at all. Their offense has had to make some long drives due to shoddy returns and punting has been a sore spot as well. But we’ll see. On paper the game should be a close one.

Good luck! (After Monday ;-) )

Do you run that many 5 receiver sets? We have 6 DBs, but I’ve only really seen 3 or 4 max on the field this year.

We have done it a few times this season.

If McDaniels sees it as a weak point in your defense, you better believe we’re coming after it.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 4, 2009 6:33 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

If you do that, you are taking blockers out of the game. Orton would have even more pressure on him. That would not be good for you guys.

by Johnny_S on Nov 4, 2009 6:53 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. We have used it when we had good protection and the defense was week at DB.

Maybe spreading the steeler defense out and forcing them to play more DBs will help ease the pressure a little bit. Fewer big bodies in the game on defense when you play nickel or dime.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 4, 2009 10:05 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I would expect to see that spread a few times but

not that often, because of the protection worries (especially with Harris out). But I wouldn’t be surprised to see them spread it out a few times. Also would expect to see two TE sets even more often, with Graham blocking and Scheffler in to catch.

Wrong, wrong wrong. I dont know where you guys get your analysis

I like the fact that everyone here seems respectable. maybe its because we’re not division rivals? But the crappiness we get from the browns and bengals is ridiculous

anyway, there’s a lot i disagree with. One, the spread offense is overrated against the steelers. what you guys are pulling out about the cards game is very different from what you will see this sunday.

Kurt Warner is a future hall of famer qb whos got boatloads of experience. and as a result he can succesfully dink and dunk is way to town. but he can do that because of who he has. not just fitzgerald but also boldin. but it comes down to how good a qb you have.

the thing is, orton isn’t bad but he’s knew to this team and he’s got limited experience and he’s certainly not on the same level as say manning or brady(no offense). I just dont see him with the same gameplan as them. in other words, you’ll only see a very select few qbs able to succesfully do what he has done to us. i.e. colts, patriots, now the vikings, and the cards.

furthermore, the ‘difficulties’ matching up with big WRs is actually not true. someone mentioned gates….he never lined up with taylor. and taylors job is to deal with the deep pass. i can almost guarantee that a one on one matchup on a deep pass taylor will win the battle 7/10 times. he rarely lets the big play happen. The few times I can think of were last year when we played the colts and reggie wayne did what ur WR did against hte bengals this year: he caught a bobble for no other reason than luck and ran it for a td. thats about how often ike taylor gives up TDs on his own.

furthermore, I’m not so confident that your defense can penetrate our OLine in pass protection. Its been spectacular.

let me throw out some statistics: of the 20 or so sacks Ben took this year 10 were because he held the ball for longer than THREE POINT FIVE SECONDS.

another 4 were because of early struggles in the first 3 games. since then the gameplay has improved dramatically.

Jared Allen is on the MVP watch by a lot of sports writers. he had ZERO SACKS AGAINST MARVEL SMITH. The same guy that Dooms is going up against. good luck with that. and another point-smith was on 1-to-1 matchups almost all day with allen. No help. the ravens had to help their tackle out with allen. and still lost. that should put things in perspective.

Our lack of points…well thats mostly because of stupidity and questionable ref calls. Ben’s thrown for at least 5 TDs on my watch that have been turned back for stupid reasons. furthermore our RB likes to fumble at the end. that cost us as well.

Honestly, watching the vikes game…all I can say is that all those yards came from dink and dunks throughout the day. the steelers play soft zone and leave the flats and middle kind of open. as a result favre kept throwing 2 and 3 yard passes to his tall WRs who kept diving for more. thats how he racked up yardage. I think i only really saw maybe 5 passes that were beyond 15 yards and were caught. I wasnt impressed.

The last QB to really destroy us(honestly) was again in 2007 when brady just shredded our craptastic defense. I hope I dont see that again in the near future.

I’m fairly confident wtih this game. I think the Steelers should win. I also think that it could be close. It certainly shouldn’t be a blow out in your favor by any reason.

Okay, there's a lot with your post I disagree with.

First of all, KURT WARNER TO THE HOF? We’re talking about the same Kurt Warner who won one super bowl but had two HOF WRs and Marshall Faulk in the backfield? The same Kurt Warner who threw FIVE interceptions last week?

Moving on, many of our sacks have been coverage sacks, so ben will be hanging onto the ball for a while in Denver, as well.

Also, our big bodied WR, Marshall, probably won’t go deep that often. He relies on short passes and then breaking tackles to make big gains. Royal or Gaffney from the slot is who you need to worry about going deep. So, Taylor may be taken out of the deep situations anyways, if he is man to man with Marshall.

Jared Allen has had 7.5 sacks in his two games vs the Packers, who have shown they are one of the worst offensive lines in football. Jared Allen may be on the MVP watch, but he gets a boost playing against the terrible packers line. So, I say OVERRATED.

Turnovers and “stupidity” are part of the game. Saying that your RBs fumble at the end of drives doesn’t mean that the steelers not scoring is a fluke, it means you guys turn the ball over. You have to finish drives. The reason the broncos haven’t been able to sustain drives is mainly penalties, but you can’t rule that out and say “well if you take that out”. The fact of the matter is that it happened.

I’m encouraged by you saying that all of the vikings yards came from dink and dunks. That’s what we play, in Denver. If it sustains drives, then that is good. Who cares if you get yards in big chunks or small bits? As long as the drive ends in a TD, none of that matters.

I never said it was going to be a blowout. I think it is going to be a close game, as well.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by kentuckybronco on Nov 5, 2009 1:02 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

again disagree with you...

Well, my comment on blowout was to the prediction that was posted by another person. I just figured I’d discuss it here instead of rehasing it elsewhere.

You miss the point about dink and dunk. its still not easy to do against the steelers. my point about discussing warner was that only qb’s with exceptional experience, and talent have been successful against the steelers.

and for the record, the number of superbowls you win is not what decides your HOF candidacy. there are many more factors. just ask john elway.

here’s some stats on kurt warner:

Most touchdown passes in a single postseason – 11 (in 2009, tied w/Joe Montana, who did it in 1990)
Highest Rate of Games w/300+ Yards Passing (Min. 100 games played) – 45.2% (47/104)23
Most Consecutive Games w/300+ Yards Passing – 6 (tied w/ Steve Young and Rich Gannon)24
Most Games with a perfect Passer Rating, Career (regular season only) – 3 (tied w/Peyton Manning and Ben Roethlisberger)25
Only NFL quarterback to throw 40 touchdowns and win a Super Bowl in the same season (1999).
One of only 5 players in NFL history to throw for more than 300 yards at least 50 times. Warner did it in 113 games, also a record.
Only quarterback to throw for over 14,000 yards with two different teams.
At age 37, Warner became the oldest quarterback to throw for 30 touchdowns in a season (2008).
Tied Dan Marino as the fastest player to pass for 30,000 yards. He accomplished this in 114 games.

If thats not enough to get you into the HoF then the HOF is overrated crap.

by surag238 on Nov 5, 2009 2:00 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

There's a lot that goes in to making the HOF.

For Kurt Warner, whenever he has been successful has been because he has had AMAZING talent around him. He didn’t improve his team or take a team on his back to win games. I don’t see him getting in. Sure, good stats, but I don’t think it’s enough to get him in.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

some more issues

my point wasnt that somehow jared allen is the only guy worth discussing. I merely mentioned him because he gets the most coverage for sack masters. I think its fair to say, that starks is pretty darn good on his own.

Furthermore, the broncos have been awful with the deep pass. in fact, most of the high yardage passes were yards after the catch against bad defenses. thats not to take anything away from your offense overall. god knows how many craptastic teams we played this year.

But the point is, you dont pass deep. so without brandon marshall do you really think gaffney is going to get hte ball deep when orton(who seems like he’s still getting comfortable with the offense-understandbly) rarely throws deep at all?

dont confuse the long TDs your other receivers have gotten when they were because of blown coverage assignments. the steelers dont give up long passes because they play soft coverage. Thats how they play. so yea you might get the short dumpoffs. but how long do you expect it to sustain. its tough. the only reason we even lost 2 games was because the steelers hadn’t gotten their kinks out of the way yet. im fairly certain that they’re a lot better thant eh record suggests. no team is perfect.

and about penalties…well thats not my point. my point isnt to make excuses. my point is to explain the situation. that it could very well be bad luck against the steelers. penalties on the broncos part(if legit) means that there are serious issues to address. now if they’re mostly uncalled for then thats differnet. my point about steelers is that they’ve been handed crap penalties that most would disagree with. the opint being that as the season progresses these abberations will disappear. i can only hope the same about mendenhall. if you pay attention to his fumbles they’re nto really because of defenses hitting him hard or because he just doesnt have the ability to hold the ball. its really because of stupid stupid rookie mistakes that disappear over time. like the vikings fumble…who jumps over a line when you’re not even near the endzone? stuff like that is different from fumbles that routinely happen because of bad handling etc.

yes mendenhall holds it wrong and it looks like he’s just watiing to ge stripped. but honestly, i havnt seen that happen, and when he does run up against someone he’s always holding it tight. its just the dumb mistakes he makes beacuse he’s an overzealous rookie.

just look at AP. he’s got the highest fumble rate in the nfl. and he’s not a rookie.

I love the Steelers

I admit it. I’m married to the Broncos, but I’m seeing the Steelers on the side when the wife is out of town. This game is tough for me so I’m going to try to sit back and enjoy it.

That said, could you rank the following in order from most likely to least likely:

A – Polamalu runs an interception back for a touchdown, produces a bottle of Head and Shoulders from his hair Captain Caveman style and washes his hair in the endzone in celebration. His teammates dump Gatorade on him to rinse him off.

B – Santonio Holmes mechanically enhances his feet and reaches for a pass that is 10 yds out of bounds in the end zone. He yells “go go gadget toes!” and keeps the toes of both shoes inbounds for the catch.

C – Heinz Ward is described as “a tough, veteran receiver” less than 100 times by the announcers (this will never happen).

D – In a moment of high spirits, Josh offers to trade starting quarterbacks with Tomlin. Tomlin sees Josh’s young face and thinks he’s back in Pop Warner so he agrees. Neither quarterback can remember which team to throw to so the game is tied 70-70 with all scores coming from pick-6s at the end of regulation. Pittsburgh finally wins on a quadruple reverse, flea-flicker, statue of liberty, fumblerooski, gadget, (no offense to the orientals) jap play.

E – Polamalu plays like his hair is on fire, until it actually does catch on fire. While he’s writhing in agony on the ground, Bill Cowher leaps out of the stands and yells at Troy to be a man and get back in the game. The spittle from Bill’s mouth extinguishes Troy’s hair, but renders Troy powerless so he returns to his home planet to rule as Grand Poobah for a millenium.

F – Ben drops back to pass. He holds the ball for the entire 3rd quarter as tackler after tackler bounce off of him. Finally, he heaves it down field to Ward who is the only receiver still able to move after 15 minutes of trying to get open. Ward crashes into Dawkins at the 1 yard line and Dawkins’ entire body shatters, be reforms itself in the shape of a Ravens player. Ward sees his natural enemy and drops the ball to pursue Raven Dawkins. Champ scoops up the fumble and returns the ball to the Pittsburgh 1 where he’s caught from behind by Hartwig who pokes the ball through the end zone for a safety.

Hey, it could happen, right?

Sorry, I tried to come up with something intelligent to ask

but all I see right now is Roethlisberger dropping back shrugging off a tackle from Elvis and throwing a strike to Ward who takes a big hit from Dawkins, but gets up smiling anyway.

How about this:

Would you rather have Orton throw for 300 or Moreno rush for 100?

Thanks for dropping by and Johnny and Steelfever.

Seriously, Troy is a bad mutha, and we have had a few good safties in Denver over the years. So we respect his play.

How do you rate his cover skills at the safety spot these days?

I respect your franchise above all others. Year in and Year out, you guys are always in the fight. It’s pretty rare for a Steelers’ team to not be in the playoff hunt.

Thanks, El Duderino.

Glad I could be here. Thank you guys for a good healthy discussion, and not just “Your team sucks! Our team rules!”. It’s always a surprise, sadly, when that happens, since we mostly just get divisional trolls on our blog. I’m sure its the same here, as with any blog.

Anyway, Troy “The Beast” Polamalu is IMHO, the best SS in the league. He gets into position to make plays, and if the opportunity arises, an INT. There really isn’t a classification for Troy, since there has ever been a player quite like him. That guy is one in a million, and if we could clone him and have 11 Troy’s on D…man, nobody would ever beat us.

I think, when at 100%, Troy is one of the best cover safeties in the league. Did you catch the Titans game at the beginning of the year? On the play where Troy had that ridiculous pick, he was completely masking Kenny Britt, and he is a pretty fast guy.

Rarely have I seen Troy get beat in a 1 on 1 situation, which is pretty exceptional considering how long I’ve been watching him play.

However, his strength comes from his unpredictablenes (is that a word?). Sometimes, he calls his own audibles when he thinks he sees something. He can blitz or drop into coverage, which can throw a QB into fits.

I think his cover skills are excellent

I remember when I first read the scouting report on him when he came out in 04 or 05 they said he was weak on man coverage and he’d bite the play action.

I think he still bites the PA and can get abused in the endzone because of it. time and time again he always bites and always gives up a TD..

but in man coverage, i think he’s really good for what he does. he cant play the cb position obviously, but for what a safety is required to do he’s amazing. he can basically break up most plays if he has too, especially if its over the middle. he’s also pretty good against tight ends. against both dallas and gates last year he blew them up repeatedly. after a while manning and rivers stopped throwing to them. as you can ssee, without him gates ran up 100+ yards this year.

in zone coverage you just dont throw his side. i can guarantee that orton will look for him and never throw his side. remember hte interception against tennessee? thats almost always what happens…i.e chargers game last year, ravens game(afc final) last year, etc. he’s gotten better over the years.
