Broncos add Ty Law, pending physical
Now this is a weird move. The Broncos have agreed to a contract with CB Ty Law - who was once one of the better corners in the League with the New England Patriots, pending a physical tonight.
Law and the Broncos have reached agreement on a contract that will add another former Patriot to Josh McDaniels' stable of them in Denver.
Law confirmed the developments when contacted Friday.
He is scheduled to fly to Denver on Friday to take a physical. Assuming he passes, Law will join the Broncos at a similar time to when he joined the New York Jets last season.
When the Jets signed him early in a week last year, Law suited up days later and participated in more than 50 plays covering Randy Moss.
He had wanted to return to football again and will now have the chance. Law, Brian Dawkins and Champ Bailey will give Denver arguably the most decorated defensive secondary in the league.
Decorated, yes - but is there a need? It is true that rookie Alphonso Smith and Jack Williams have been up and down as the Nickel corners, but will the addition of Law help that?

I really see this as a depth move
given the fact that three of their DB backups are ailing in some way right now. While none of the injuries seem serious it can’t hurt to have some more depth there right now. Might as well bring in someone who knows what he’s doing. So I don’t know how one could see this as a “bad” move per se. Maybe a TBD move though.

Can't argue with this move
Especially since Law can come in and give the young DB’s another perspective (besides Champ and B-Dawk) on how to be a All-Pro Corner in the NFL.
Dude’s got 52 Career Int’s. If nothing else they can plug him in at Safety if needed.

As I commented above
I think there IS more going in with injuries than people realize. We have 3 backfield backups who are hurting right now. To me adding more DB depth with that situation in mind makes perfect sense.

Nickle Corner is one of our few defensive weaknesses
Maybe they want Ty on the slot receivers, or perhaps they could put Ty in Goodman’s spot on passing downs and let Goodman cover the slot guy.
I’ll be curious to see how those hips still move and what kind of speed he still has.
by Broncos_FTW on Nov 6, 2009 2:03 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
versatiltiy and been there done that
will help explain the move, as well as the fact that JWilliiams isn’t feeling great so they are making sure their subpackages don’t get predictable. THis may also help keep some of hte young DBs that go out on Special teams as well as subpackages a bit fresher by cutting down on defensive workload.
One of our biggest failings on STs last week was simply not working hard enough to stay in front of and outrun the Ravens STers… DBs make up the majority of our ST tacklers, so thi smove almost automatically keeps them fresher.

I saw Smith and Williams struggled a little here and there, but they were not horrible in my opinion.
However, I guess depth is always a good thing, as long as the price we have to pay isnt too high…

I don’t care about their ages – it just got a HELL of a lot more difficult to throw the ball against the Broncos!!
Also, while I absolutely love A. Smith and Jack, it’s becoming clear that they’re players for the future and this year we need every bit of Defensive ammo we’ve got to finish strong (win division) and compete in what will be an extremely tough AFC playoff bracket.

Depth, methinks.
Barrett missed another practice yesterday, Goodman got nicked up last week, JMFW is sick, Dawkins had a hammy tweak, Renaldo Hill also got nicked, and the Phonz had that ankle sprain that took quite a bit out of his game. I don’t think Law is here to replace anybody— he’ll just be a stop gap until the rest of the guys get healthy.

I’ve been impressed with Phonz, and Williams has made great strides, so I’m not seeing the need from a pure talent perspective – besides, these newer guys need reps. Law does bring experience, but I’m not convinced that it translates all that well to the corner position, particularly in man coverage. And finally, he’s never struck me as a team first kinda guy and I question his “contribution” to the locker room. I could be totally full of it here – I hope so!

I wonder how his name came up in the discussion in the first place. Were they sitting around combing a list of free agents and said “Holy crap! Ty Law is available! Let’s see if he’s interested!” ? I really just wonder how the whole process started out, I guess. Not that I’m against the move or disagree with it, but curious how the ball gets rolling in a situation like this.

4 words never used together in the history of said English prose?
My brother and I for years have played an ongoing game of looking out for first-time-ever word combinations used in the course of meaningful conversation—usually three words, but four’s not bad… I think this could be one (AND you receive extra degree of difficulty points for using no words coined since 1800). When you think about the zillions of words spoken and scribed in recorded time, it’s no mean feat…

Who gets cut?
Regular Inactives and cut potential, imo:
Gorin- due to Harris injury, I would be shocked if this guy is cut.
Baker- we have protected this guy from waivers all year and invested a ton of coaching, again shock if they try to move this guy to PS.
Olsen- with the inconsistent gaurd/center performence, I would be suprised if they try to move this guy to the PS.
Lloyd- he’s probably the best player of any of these guys, but there are four healthy, quality WRs and McKinley for depth. He may go.
Moss- Jarvis has to be the leader in the clubhouse with DOOM, Ayres, and Haggen all playing so well. Plus, we have the ever-versitile D Ried available.
by ButteBronco on Nov 6, 2009 2:31 PM MST reply actions 0 recs
I say Gorin
If something happens to a Tackle during the game we have two options
1) Have Ryan Clady cover both sides-Doable but unlikely
2)Insert Daniel Graham and Richard Quinn. Combined they form some sort of super tackle
3) We could I guess, if we have to, have Ross Hochstein fill in, since he is supposedly so versatile.
PS I know McDaniels values versatility but is it really virtue if your not good at any one thing. Imagine if Spenser Larsen was a FB/LB but sucked at both spots, sure he’d be versatile but to what use. Sometimes it’s good to do one thing and do it very well-for example, anybody remember TR Dunn of the Nuggets

Same day you post this Denver Post and McD are talking up Moss.
Jarvis Moss, the Broncos’ first-round pick of the 2007 draft, has made the most of a tough situation. He has dressed for only one game, but he has performed well on the Broncos’ scout team — to the benefit of the game-day offense.
“Jarvis Moss has been the look-team player of the week I think four or five times out of (seven) games,” said Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.

What I like about this signing
More depth when some of our guys are bit banged up
Smart, saavy veteran
Pittsburgh uses a lot of 4 and 5 reciever sets, makes sense to add another corner
One of his strengths is bump and run coverage. With Mike Wallace of Pittsburgh, you def. want to jam him on the line.
He is a good tackler
Also very underrated as a blitzer-didn’t do this to often with the Patriots but did so more with the Jets
Maybe Broncobear can do a Tales from the Sunny Side to get to know more about him.

I haven't seen many Steelers games
Do they really use the 4 and 5 WR sets a lot? I know they’re throwing more, but it’s hard to believe they’d leave their base set of 2 TEs so drastically. Heath Miller has a lot of catches, and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen him in a slot. I don’t really think Ty helps with the matchup this week unless he goes against Mike Wallace.
by legendarywalton on Nov 6, 2009 3:23 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Often Heath Miller
Will be part of the wide out set. They’ll go with Holmes and Ward on the outside. Wallace and Miller in the slot positions and often Mewelde Moore will either be in the backfield or they can motion him out wide to. Limas Sweed can be the 4th wideout but he is being pushed for time by another reciever but can’t think of his name right now.

I wonder how Much they signed him for. A veteran player who receives no bonuses in his contract may be paid the veteran minimum of up to $810,000, while only accounting for $425,000 in salary-cap space.

One of them is going to have to go by a nickname or initials or something… The casual sports fan is going to get confused.

I'm almost expecting
This headline once he passes his physical:
“Broncos add Law, release Berger…punting duties to be handled by committee, namely anyone not named ‘Berger’”.

Someone goes on IR, I guess
Hillis was officially held out of practice for a non-injury reason, so speculation he’s being cut is understandable. Yet I thought one of the injuries is bad enough to be season-ending. Now, only 2 injured players did not practice today: Ryan Harris and McBean. Harris should not be done for the season from what we heard. And if he is done, Ty Law is a weird replacement. McBean – not sure about extent of his injury. Maybe he will be replaced from depth we have at DE and Ty Law adds to depth at banged up secondary.

My Take
He’s being brought in for a certain kind of match up we’re weak in. McD probably saw a potential mismatch while watching game film and had Xander phone up Mr. Law.
I love our coaching staff in that respect.
Plus is signing a decorated veteran with a good reputation EVER a bad idea? Young players FEED off of these guys. Call it T.O./Pacman Jones insurance. Its hard to get into trouble or get mouthy when someone who has been there more than you and is wiser than you is telling you to sit back down.
Could you imagine the reaming B-Marsh would get if he did something stupid? I’m not talking about Jay Cutler’s media attacks. I’m talking about a nice one on one conversation with all our veterans and some of our former greats.
Really helps keep you in check.

It is interesting
I think you really have to look at the inactive lists. Guys who dont dress for games, and start with the cut speculation there. To say that Hilis, a young buck who has talent but needs some good coaching, is going to be replaced with a savvy veteran with maybe two years left in him (the way he plays suggests this not his age), the the coach’s decision is questionable. However, I personally would have to see that McDaniels cut Hillis before I would believe the speculation. Also, guys have been known to buy the number from someone. I know that Travis Henry “bought” #20 from Mike Bell when he was here. so just because some site says Ty is on the team and his number is 22 doesn’t make it true. Stick with MHR we get the Official Story just like any other media outlet! Writers, reporters, talk show host (myself included) tend to say somethign or other to create conversation (listen to my sports show on podcast, I picked OSU to win the pac 10 even though I though Oregon and USC would fight for it!).

I'm guessing
A DB is headed to IR…probably Barrett. Law will play more like a S in nickel packages. I don’t buy that he’ll ever play a conventional nickle-corner roll— manned up against a slot guy. The physics are wrong….its not logical.

Well I never saw this coming
and don’t really know why till I started to read some of the comments. I agree that other than depth, I can’t see anything else. As others have stated, there has to be more to this than we know. However I will say this like I do all pick-ups and if he helps our team improve I am all for it. Also this gives Smith and Williams another veteran CB to learn from.
How serious is that hamstring injury and how recently did he have it?

No doubt he has the wisdom that comes with age...
But I wonder how easy speed will beat him.

I don't see why anyone's complaining at all
We have some guys who aren’t contributing much, and who certainly don’t have the experience + knowledge that Law does, so releasing one of them is not big deal.
It’s dipping into the free agent pool during the season. It’s not like there are pro bowlers to be had.
The positives greatly outweigh the negatives here. Unless the player who gets released to make room for him becomes really good somewhere else or something. That seems unlikely to me.

Ty Law is a conumate professional
Who works very hard to stay in top physical shape. Here’s a video that shows you a glimpse of the type of guy he is. Another McD type of guy, for sure.

Not that I am in a position to question the move...
But can honestly say that I was not impressed at all with Law’s tenure in KC. He could likely have been a casualty of the KC defensive scheme, but he seemed aged and slow while with the chiefs (when their own head coach was an old d-back).
Additionally, I question whether his character fits what McDaniels wants in his team. My brother, as a bartender, met Law several times while he was in KC and said the guy was an absolute “tool.” Consistently rude, arrogant and surrounded by sycophants. … I know – this is one guys perspective, but I tend to trust his assessment of character.
