When Things Don't Make Sense

Man, I'm a posting fool lately... can anyone tell that the new "Lil Bronco Fan" has delayed his entrance into this world?

Anyway, the news that the Broncos signed veteran CB Ty Law and then released Jack Williams has taken me, and the rest of us here at MHR by surprise.  Judging by the comments before Jack Williams release was announced... and then the comments after... nobody saw this one coming.  I think it would be a pretty accurate statement to say that we are all a bit "shocked" and confused by this move.

Honestly, I have a little bit of the same feeling I had when I read the news about the "He who shall not be named here" trade.  I remember thinking at that time, "My team has just made the biggest mistake in NFL history."  Why?  Because from my vantage point....  it didn't make sense.  Why would you trade away the "Golden Armed" QB of the future?

Star-divide

After a few weeks, however, I started to see a bigger picture (thanks to everyone here at MHR)... one that helped me understand why the move was necessary and valuable to the team as a whole.  I started to see things that I had never seen before about our team last year, and the direction that our team was heading this year.  Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that it was a good move for the team, even though at first, I was convinced it was a devastating mistake.

So, what can we learn from our recent history?  Well, I think a lot of things.

First, remember that we only see a small part of the picture.

I don't understand the move to release Jack Williams any more than any of you, but you have to remember that we only see a small part of what the coaches see every day.  We see a few plays on a Sunday, where coaches see every play, in every practice, and in every play.  They understand more about Jack Williams and how he fits into their plans better than all of us put together.  For us to think that we know as much as they do is really foolish on our part.  These guys are the best at what they do... and they know what they are doing.

Second, remember that Mr. Bowlen, Josh McDaniels, Mike Nolan, and the entire organization are personally vested in winning.... far more than we are.

Do you think that Mr. Bowlen wants to make moves that hurts the teams chances at winning?  Don't you think that McDaniels is doing everything in his power to create the best team possible?  Do you think they would have made this move if Mike Nolan wasn't on board with the move?  These guys all want to win... their jobs, their futures, and their legacies depend upon it.   We all have to believe that these guys are making the best decisions possible... and that they are doing things that are in the best interest of the team.  How could we really think any differently?

Third, there is a reason we are where we are.

Don't forget... there is a reason we are not coaching in the NFL.  We may be very knowledgeable about our team and about the game of football, but we are no where near the level of an NFL Head Coach or Coordinator.  For us to assume that we are on par with those guys is really kind of funny.  They are the best of the best... and we are fans.  We get in trouble when we forget that fact.

Now does all of this mean that we shouldn't question why certain moves are being made?  Heck no!  We should all seek to understand the why behind moves that don't seem to make sense to us.  However, we need to make sure we pursue those answers with those three things in mind... They See More... They Know More... and they want to Win more.  And when you keep those things in perspective, then you will be able to objectively start to understand the "why" behind moves that don't make sense.

Waiting for the picture to become clearer.  GO BRONCOS!

We don’t know it all. My question is how steep a price was it to dump a bright young player for someone who, from his style of play, has maybe at the most one or two years left?

Draftaholics unite!

Very nice article – thank you!

My only comment is that this is the first time that I’ve had a clear picture of a defensive area that the Broncos will be drafting in. Sure, they might even believe that this buys them a couple of years – he could. But with a secondary that’s older and Bruton and McBath working out so well on STs, I’m betting on another CB in the first three rounds of the upcoming draft (time is relative – to me, it’s upcoming :D) O-line and CB seem like locks.

I’ve touched on this before, but letting it take a bit of time and trying to see why this was done rather than just reacting to it is a great way to gain perspective. Rec’d on that alone!

Great thought on the draft.... I guess I hadn't thought it quite that far out.

I certainly think that this move signals that McD is serious about winning “this year”. I think it say a lot about their mindset about this team… this year. I kind of like it.

It's an unusually good year for DTs

I’ve been looking at several players who may be great fits at DE – among Fields, Baker and Thomas, I think that we’re Ok at NT right now unless someone just pops out at McD. We also have some great options at ILB if we go that route.

Last thought – we’re going to be looking at O-line. It has been my impression that the changes in the blocking scheme are creating some problems for our ZB personnel. We’ll probably move Olsen to LG and perhaps Hamilton to C, but he’s had issues last year and this. I suspect that we’ll be looking at a C, either to move in or as backup, in FA or the draft.

How about that Glick kid from Nebraska?

I thought he looked great last night.

I’ve never given you ‘you told me so’ on Cushing. You nailed him!!! I figured he was a muscled up bust in the making— and clearly he’s the player you predicted….which is to say, you’ve got my attention and respect when it comes to evaluating college kids…and not just because of Cushing.

Williams

He was drafted by Shannahan, and the new staff had no loyalty to him. I thought he played great in training camp coming into the year, but hadn’t seen anything from him recently, getting burned for a td against San Diego, and 3rd down conversions in the Baltimore game.

So perfectly stated, HRU

Regardless of our knowledge level, we are fans. The Broncos staff may make mistakes, but their perspective for decision making is far superior to ours.. though some on this site might take issue with that. There is much more to this decision than we have been made aware of.. or may ever know.

Thanks and rec’d.

I think I've seen an uptick

in trust in McD’s decisions since the beginning of the season. I see them all, especially the seemingly weird ones, as learning opportunities. If we spend every one of our choices in the next draft on 250-pound nose tackles I won’t bat an eyelash. I’ll just say, “Hmmmm. Wonder why he did that?”

Two Camps

One Camp: focusing the Law vs Williams aspect. For 15% of the snaps a Dime Cornerback might see in a game I would rather have a consistant preformer over a hit or miss guy (Andre Davis vs. Webster).

Second Camp: Focusing on future of CB position. At the end of the Day does Jack Williams have more or less potential then D.J Johnson or Tony Carter? Who you ask? The two Rookie corners on the Practise Squad. Josh Bell out performed Williams last year what is to say they those two guys aren’t as good just more unheard of?

This give us some light on what positions we will draft in the spring.

broncobear (Emmett Smith) made the statement above that I was thinking and it hits right at home. We can start looking at the college prospects for the draft at Center, Guard and Corner Back. Their should be some very good players coming out next year and Center is one where I hope we draft a beast. Also a Guard. I would like to see us get a Corner that has a little more height not that it necessarily means anything, but I like them to be around 6’1 with great speed, mobility and arm strength. Any ideas who would be a good pick at those spots?

Patience

This assumes that we will draft for “need” rather than bpa. I think the team will continue to draft bpa.

a late response on tall CBs

I’ll repeat this point in the future in case it’s missed.

I would like to see us get a Corner that has a little more height

The Patriots liked smaller CBs but most of the upcoming draft’s CBs are tallish. There’s a few who aren’t — such as Syd’Quan Thompson, who i watched play yesterday and wouldn’t be afraid of drafting — but it would almost take a conscious effort to draft small to find one. I can only think of one other short CB in 2010’s cropJavier Arenas.

The junior and eligible underclassmen, who form a very important part of the draft and are expected to be plentiful because of a possible rookie salary cap, aren’t particularly small either. I can only find one CB in the junior crop of draft worthy CBs that is 5-9, and that’s a CB group of 34 players. Short CBs are nearly absent in the sophomore group, too. I can only find one and he’s well down the list. Finding a quality CB who’s short is going to be very hard to do in the future.

Agreed 100% and rec'd

Having coached, I know that the local press, parents, and fans are always second guessing the moves a team makes. The “outsiders” rarely, if ever, had a clue as to why we did what we did.

I still voice my opinions, but always with the complete confidence that the Broncos staff knows a heck of a lot more about what is really happening.

Excellent post

Like HT above, I too am a coach. Not everything I do personnel-wise or otherwise works out, but I have a very specific reason for why I do it. I am constantly amazed at the level of vitriol that many “outsiders” (OK, parents) throw at the coaching staff, even when we win.

I’ll tell you a little story. Earlier this season, I went to home plate to give my lineup card to the umpires prior to a game. Since we were the home team, I also handed them their game checks, as is the custom. One of them laughed and said, “You sure you want to give us these before the game?” Jokingly, I said that maybe I should wait and deduct money for every call that I didn’t like.

The other umpire apparently thought that I was being serious, and he said something to the effect of, “You can do that when we can question your calls.” I just looked at him and said, “You can question any call of mine that you’d like to question, and I’ll answer you.”

That’s the beauty of it, and that’s the way it should be.

Excellent

A great reminder for all of us we fans that really, we don’t know what’s REALLY going on with the team. THINKING we know, is not the same as actually knowing. Having an opinion doesn’t mean you’re correct.

I’m happy to let the paid professional coaches do their jobs, and remember I’m just a guy that thinks he knows some stuff about football but hasn’t ever collected one thin dime for my football knowledge. Therefore, when the people that actually get PAID to make decisions re the team do something that I find confusing, I’ll try to figure out WHY they made the choice that they did, vs saying “I don’t agree, so those guys ’r idjits!”.

Excellent post.

Another way to look at it...

I can’t begin to evaluate Jack Williams— I’m niether a paid talent evaluator, and even if I was, the TV camera angle leaves much to be desired. But when I do the math on this move, it seems to me to be a clear indication that the Broncos think they are built to contend right now. They aren’t acting like a team trying to prepare for winning down the road. Whether they are right or not— I can’t say— but it sure makes me even more excited. So far they’ve done a really good job of knowing who and what they are. Tweek moves are done by confident teams, and I think McD has thus far proved that he knows exactly what he is doing.

by PredominantlyOrange on Nov 8, 2009 9:22 AM MST reply actions

this is a move that the Pat's make...

sign a proven vet… at a very reasonable price… because you completely expect to by playing in the post season. Those vets are golden in post-season play because their experience and knowledge make sure the mistakes that cost your team games are minimalized.

I know Jack was a fan favorite… but in the moment, I think Law upgrades the CB depth…

McD loves the CB position

I’ve noted this before, but he wrote the Pats manual for CBs. He seems to have very specific ideas on the schemes and personnel that he/we need to defend the way the Broncos want. If Jack didn’t work out and there’s a chance that Law will, making the team stronger is always a good idea.

Moreno/Buckhalter in '09

by Doc Bear on Nov 8, 2009 10:42 AM MST reply actions

I just wonder....

…what this says about Alphonso. Are we really bringing in Law to be the 3rd CB? If so, did we just waste a 1st round pick on a guy who can´t be a nickel CB?

by Coverboy on Nov 9, 2009 2:09 AM MST reply actions

I don't think that's why we brought him in.

Josh wants to win right now. I feel that he brought in Law to take our secondary to the next level. Law has been a top two CB for the last few years, so to bring him in as a three, it shows me that he wants to make this group solid right NOW. He doesn’t want to wait for the Phonz to get good.

I’m not saying we wasted a pick on the Phonz, because he’s only a rookie. Rookie defensive backs have a hard transition to the NFL. I feel like the broncos are bringing him along slowly and want him to be great in the future.

Don’t read too much into this. I don’t think that McD has given up on the phonz. I just feel that Josh wants to bring in veterans that know what they are doing. It also doesn’t hurt that phonz has mentors to learn from and look up to.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
