Horse Tracks 11/9/09 - Chargers cut Broncos' AFC West lead to 1.5 games; Denver hosts Pittsburgh tonight on MNF; Chiefs release RB Larry Johnson
Good Morning, MHR Friends! Well, Phil Rivers led his Dolts on quite an impressive game-winning drive last night, as San Diego injected themselves right back into the AFC West and Wild-Card races. But no matter what happens tonight, the Broncos will remain in the driver's seat. Next Sunday, the Broncos head to Washington and the Dolts host the Iggles, and the following week San Diego comes to Denver. You can see where I'm going with this... As for tonight, put on some orange, get yourself to the Big IF, and make some NOISE for our Broncos!!!!!!

Is Anybody Else Here Really Angry?
Our boys have played smart football and beaten a lot of good football teams. Lots of them. But after one loss, it’s like we’re in a time warp: Kyle Orton has a noddle arm. The players lack talent. The coach has been lucky. I even read one infuriating analysis that went like this:
Take away Stokely’s tip reception.
What if Tony Romo doesn’t throw the INT to Champ?
The ST play against San Diego was an abberation
The Patriots should have won the overtime coin toss.
Beating the Raiders and Browns? Doesn’t even count.
That’s right. Take away everything they’ve done well, and they haven’t done well. On a related note, if I were stronger, taller, younger, harder-working and a great football player, I’d be Ben Hamilton’s ideal replacement.
I think the Broncos read their press clipping last week. They finally got big ups from around the league, and played with a sense of entitlement that a team in year one of re-scheming can’t afford. That’s not going to happen this week. They’re being treated like the Village Idiot who stumbled across an investment banker’s wallet. If they don’t come out violent and angry, something is wrong.

+1
I hope they are fired up after basically being dismissed this week. Most prognosticators I’ve been hearing are picking the Steelers. Thing is, they have to do it on the field. Even then, they’ll probably be underdogs again most of this season. Not the worst position to be in. Gives them motivation to keep striving forward.

Agreed
I like that though- I think the team plays better when everyone is dissing them.
Seems like some of these so-called experts are still emotionally tied to their pre-season predictions, thus still have an interest in seeing Denver fail. Then they can say “See see see see, toldya! Toldya they’d suck!”
All these types have come out of the woodwork since Denver lost to Balmer. Watching the Ravens-Bengals game yesterday, it was pretty clear that the Ravens were super-jacked to play Denver- I’ll make the prediction now that the Denver game is their best performance all year.
I hope the team knows this and comes out angry and motivated to beat the Steelers.

Just a quick question
Are we wearing the orange alt.s tonight? I know we’re going to bust them out pretty soon for a primetime game, but I can’t remember if it’s tonight or against the Gints on Thanksgiving. Man, imagine if it WAS tonight. That combined with the Steelers’ yellow pants would be, um… bright.

Excerpt from the PPG – Head to Head: Steelers LT Max Starks vs. Broncos LB Elvis Dumervil – Gerry Dulac article:
Dumervil has had two or more sacks in four games this season, including four against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2. None of those sacks, however, came against Browns Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas. After getting shut down by Thomas in the first half, Dumervil was moved to the left side in the second half and got all four sacks against right tackle John St. Cl
My recollection was that DOOM did get 1 of his 4 sacks against Thomas. So I went back and watched the game again (gotta love DVR!) and sure enough on the first play of the 3rd quarter DOOM got the first of his 4 sacks. That sack came against Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas.
Good attempt at trying to discredit DOOM’s 4 sack day performance though. Too bad that statement was not the truth.

You’re right about that, C-Style. The sacks started piling up after he was switched onto St. Clair. But he beat Thomas once.
I think the bigger point is important, though: Take away Doom’s sacks, and he’s not a very good player. Hard to argue with the logic of that.
by Chibronx on Nov 9, 2009 9:28 AM MST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not so sure I agree
I think DOOM is underrated when it comes to stopping the run as well as dropping back in coverage. He has 26 tackles which is 6th on the team and he has a couple of passes defended which is valuable to the team. You can also argue that he’s good at getting pressure on the QB even when he doesn’t get a sack. Besides, that statement is somewhat like saying; if you take away his catches, Brandon Marshall is not a very good player.

See my above comment about my own potential role as Ben Hamilton’s replacement for clarification. By the way, I could also be president — if I were older, smarter, wiser, had a less French name, more moderate politics, good speaking skills, a law degree, the ability to go days without sleeping, lots of rich friends and lots of luck. Totally true story.
I mean, what does the Steelers’ D really have without Dick LeBeau, James Harrison and Troy Polamalu? Sure, Casey Hampton’s good, but he’s up there in mileage. The other linebackers are good, but if they made fewer plays, they wouldn’t be as good.

I’d be thrilled if we cut LaMont Jordan and signed L Johnson on Tuesday morning. He’d be great in short yardage and goal line.

Unfortunately not,
I’ve been very disappointed in our current RBs in these short yardage situations. It might be a setback for Moreno, but if we are all about W-L in 2009, we could use Johnson at RB because he has proven to be able to move chains/score TDs in short yardage that our current RBs have proven they can’t.
If we cut Jack Williams for Ty Law (clearly a move for 2009 and not the future in mind), why not cut Jordan for Larry Johnson for 2009.
This is my favorite website.

Travis Henry
How did that baggage laden guy work out for us?
by Endzone on Nov 9, 2009 12:09 PM MST up reply actions 0 recs
Larry Johnson is a much better player than Henry. Watching the Chefs O-line play, even Barry Sanders and Walter Payton would have sub 4.0 YPC.
Johnson is a D-bag but I highly doubt any team is going to splash the kind of $ or contract term Denver wasted on Travis Henry. If we signed him to something like Ty Law got, Johnson may blow up for us in order to play for a bigger payday in 2010 from any NFL team.
This is my favorite website.

i understand your disappointment and agree to an extent
but i think its still the adjustment the offensive line is making to the new scheme, as well as super vanilla play calling and Hillis not getting on the field, for whatever reason.
we are so predictable on 2nd and short or 3rd and short it isn’t even funny. an occasional sweep or bootleg would be nice to see !
i maintain that it isn’t a personnel thing, but i’m so not an expert. still, Larry Johnson ? pls no

"Feud"?
The Broncos and Steelers have had some great games over the years and both are traditionally successful AFC franchises, but isn’t calling their series a “feud” a bit much? It’s not exactly Patriots v Jets…

"Chargers cut Broncos' AFC West lead to 1.5 games" Really?
This kind of statement annoys me. I know The Broncos has played one game less and that this is then called a half game as it can go either way. If they win the half is turned to a whole and if they lose it turns into a zero. A game not played is not a game half won. The Broncos are ONE game ahead of The Chargers. Period. There are no half games in football any more than there are half strokes in golf. If Phil Mickelson is in the clubhouse at 8 under par and Tiger Woods is on the course at 6 under with four holes to go, do you then say that because of Tiger’s four half holes, (i.e. two points) potentiel, they are actually tied? Of course not. Tiger is 2 strokes back regardless of how many holes he has yet to play and San Diego is ONE game behind Denver regardless of how many games each club has played.
by warmick on Nov 9, 2009 10:44 AM MST reply actions 0 recs
It's more a baseball term than a golf term.
When there are 160+ games in your season and teams play most nights, you need a frame of reference when teams haven’t played the same number of games.

Well I agree and I don’t. If a team scores a tie, it makes sense for a team to be a game and a half behind. But it doesn’t make sense when one of the teams has not played yet that week.

Well, it will all be resolved tonight.
Usually they don’t have one of these unless there is a bye week, but since the broncos are playing a full day later, statisticians will use the half game to indicate the potential win/loss of the broncos on the schedule. It really isn’t a big deal in the end because every team plays the same number of games.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

I think they're just trying to
build suspense, even if we’re hoping there is actually none. Both readership and TV ratings are increased when there’s a tight race, a battle, etc. When someone runs away with a game or with a division they don’t like it because they think interest wanes. But that would be fine by me! ;-)

I guess it doesn't bug me like it does some here
We are 2 games ahead of them in the loss column so it’s not accurate to say we only have a 1 game lead. We are however only 1 game ahead of them in the Win column so it’s not accurate to say we have a 2 game lead. Hence, the 1.5 game lead.
