Run blocking
I've heard this addressed before, in regards to zone blocking and the misuse of our running backs, but I think that run blocking is the main problem with our team right now. Our defense is playing as well as you could expect them to play with how long they've been put on the field and how many bad situations our offense/special teams have put them in. I believe the pressure on Orton is a direct result of the general ineffectiveness of the running game, which, though I know little about football, I believe to be the result of a scheme that is trying to execute runs that cannot be pushed through our run blocking. I can't be unhappy with 6-2, but then look at what's happened to the Giants in the last 4 weeks. No record is unassailable until late December. Maybe we've had the benefit of surprise to get us to 6-0, but player skill alone is not going to win us the division. All through this game, with the exception of maybe 2 runs (to the outside), I feel like we were trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.
Now, an early warning... What failed us tonight was our offense. The strength of the Redskins is their defense. If we don't get our offense together by next week, we could lose that game that we've all been secretly chalking up as a tally in the win column. Yeah, their offense sucks. But if we don't produce offensively, we'll be relying on the Redskins to lose the game for themselves, and I really don't want to see our team in that position. I felt like Coughlin's call on 3rd and 4th down relfected a loser's mentality this week, and I don't want to see that here. I want to see the Broncos play to win. I want to see some offense.

On the record, I don’t think the solution is to air it out. We can’t air it out before we establish the run because Orton won’t have the time to let receivers come open deep if he’s getting heavy blitzes from a defense that doesn’t respect our run game. Pittsburg gave us the benefit of the doubt in the first half, and that’s why we had some offensive production. In the second half, with little running success, they came all out and shut us down. We have to run to pass.

They have a decent defense, but I don't see Washington as a special defense
I think it may be a close game, closer than we like, but I think we squeze out an ugly vitory, maybe with our defense scoring the winning score

We need
Orton to throw down field more. If Orton throws the ball further than 15 yards down field for a couple completions the safeties will begin to cheat back a little bit, and the linebackers will also have to cheat back to fill the gap between. This creates more room for Moreno and Buckhalter to operate and keeps the defense honest.

O line marginal at pass blocking too
Coming into the season, I though our D line would be our weak line, with linebackers the second weakest link. Now our weak link is the O line. Great job with our D, but our O line is a work in progress. Clady is great and perhaps Harris and Kuper will be ok going forward; but tonight Kuper did not look good. Hamiton is done; Weigmann is about finished too; and the backups are inadequate.
2nd weakest link is Berger – he is done too.
Orton?? He did not have a chance tonight, so ???

Don't get me started on the punter....
I don’t think I’ve ever been so upset at a punter. /sigh
I do feel that we can beat Washington, KC, Oakland, KC. That’s 10 wins, and a respectable season. However, if we can’t beat Indy, Pittsburgh, or Baltimore, then it hardly matters. Even in our wins, I did not see terrific run blocking. Moreno has to work really hard to earn his 3 yards every time he touches the ball. There is no room between the tackles, and it’s hurting us in the run game, as well as play action. The steelers D was not fooled by our play action last night.
I realize that it’s pro football, and it’s not easy or pretty for other teams, either…. but I’m just waiting to see what McD has in mind to get this offense going. The season isn’t over, and I’m anxious to see what the team can learn from these losses. It’s time to put all of that good coaching to work.
