Jason Elam released by the Falcons

I just heard that Jason Elam has been released by the Atlanta Falcons. This is not really surprising given his poor performance this season (12 of 19), but I feel sad for the guy who kicked brilliantly for the Broncos for many years. He was the very first Bronco I met at training camp at Greeley, and he was clutch for our team.

If this is the end of his career, I hope the Broncos can sign him in the off season so that he can retire as a Bronco. It was always strange to see him in red and black, and he needs to retire dressed in orange and blue.

Finally, with Matt Prater kicking extremely well this season, it was probably for the best that the Broncos declined to offer Jason one last contract.

Here's to Jason Elam! My favorite kicker of all time.

how does it work for kickers ?

they don’t get a lot of respect but he is for sure a hall of famer isn’t he ?

he was a great Bronco !

I think that he should go. He was so good for so long. Then again, I thought the same about Karlis but he's not gonna make it in, probably.

I have no idea. Too bad we can’t get in those hall of fame committee meetings to hear what is going on.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

by Troy Hufford on Dec 1, 2009 2:17 PM MST up reply actions

he won't make and shouldn't it

I loved rooting for the guy. He won alot of games without question in the closing seconds. But someone who’s only on the field for 5-10 plays a game or so shouldn’t get into the hall of fame. I wish him the best and he will always be a fav Bronco to me. the no timeout run on to the field for the game winner against the Raiders I believe, was a great football moment

Good on you, Elam! You’ll always be a Bronco to me.

oh oh it gets better (for Elam) !

that 63 yds field goal that Elam tied Dempsey for ?

if you look at the Wikipedia entry for Tom Dempsey it explains this:

Dempsey was born without toes on his right foot. He wore a modified shoe with a flattened and enlarged toe surface. This generated controversy about whether such a shoe gave a player an unfair advantage.2 In 1977, the NFL added a rule, informally known as the “Tom Dempsey Rule,” that “any shoe that is worn by a player with an artificial limb on his kicking leg must have a kicking surface that conforms to that of a normal kicking shoe.”34

That is why I say Elam has the record.

I am not a big fan of kickers in general, but Elam has earned a place in the Ring of Fame.

Agreed

Elam was always clutch when he was with the Broncos

Elam matched the NFL record for the longest kick ever.

That deserves some kind of respect in Canton.

that ball is probably already in the HOF

re: Longest Field Goal (63yds)

that kick plus a 17 year career plus some of his other records, along with his team records and i think you have a pretty compelling case for Elam.

but of course stating the obvious, i’m a total Broncos homer : )

by Jenna Talia on Dec 1, 2009 3:11 PM MST up reply actions

Not sure about the ball

But I do recall hearing that right after the game the NFL took the shoe and it is now enshrined.

by Flunkie on Dec 1, 2009 4:11 PM MST up reply actions

aw you made me wonder
The shoe worn by Tom Dempsey during the 1970 NFL season is on exhibit in the Hall’s exhibition rotunda that chronicles the first century of professional football. The shoe worn by Elam as well as the ball he kicked for the record-tying field goal was added to the Hall’s collection days after the historic moment. Both are currently on display in the Hall’s Pro Football Adventure Room.

crazy

that record stood for 28 years before Elam tied it

by Jenna Talia on Dec 1, 2009 6:49 PM MST up reply actions

He's not done.

With all the kicking woes around the league, he’ll land somewhere. Probably won’t take long either.

Hang on folks, road's a little bumpy in these spots.

5 Seconds of Panic indeed!

Poor Elam. I am actually of the mind that perhaps he can catch on with someone else and extend his career a bit further like the Gary or Morten Anderson/Andersen.

And definitely, I wholeheartedly agree that hte Broncos should sign him for one last contract to retire him as a Bronco!!

by tunga77 on Dec 1, 2009 2:58 PM MST reply actions

His second career has started as ugly as the first one ended.

For those who haven’t seen it, Football Outsiders’ review of Elam’s novel is painful. And hilarious.. And I’m not kicking the guy while he’s down. The audience for his books is pre-built and quite large. He will make money in career number 2 even if the results are like number, er……

The Falcons front office read Monday Night Jihad

realized what a nutjob Elam is, how dishonorable his fascist political views are, how divisive his racist brand of Christian fundamentalism is, and he was 4/8 from 30-39 yds kicking indoors.

So you know him personally?

Did you read his book? Or are you basing this “fascist” comment on the review?

Do you hate Christians? If so, why?

I've never liked that Elway guy.

He lost, like, 7 Super Bowls or something.

Wasn't this towards the end of his career here?

i.e. when his leg started fading.

(I don’t actually agree or disagree with your opinion, btw, I’m just asking.)
