Listening to it on KOA...

and while drifting in and out of sleep throughout the second half, it seems very, very clear that KO is not our answer at QB. Maybe we sign him to a short-term deal while McD trains Brandstater but that's the longest he lasts in Denver IMO. On a second and ten he appeared to make a great slip out of a collapsing pocket, only to run out of bounds short of the first down. When I was streaming the video in the first half he rolled out on a boot and did a similar thing--made it back to the LOS and ran out of bounds with a solid two-yard cushion between him and the nearest defender. Those two are indicative of willingness to sacrifice for the win--and of course I have to juxtapose the Elway Helicopter with that. Come on, Orton, Elway had over a decade on you, was playing against a hard-nosed D rather than a finesse one, and he still took the punishment. Granted the game was more important, but still...

More fundamentally, Orton (and our piss-poor first-half run blocking--how many times did Weigmann double a DT just to have an LB shoot right by him!? this is not a big D line, no one needs to be doubled!) was the primary reason that we didn't win. You have your defense holding Peyton Manning et alia to 27 yards in 7 possessions across three quarters, generating THREE turnovers during the course of all that, giving you an (approximated) average field position pretty close to midfield, and you put up 16 points total!? According to Logan, he seemed to be under-throwing/throwing behind his receivers all half, and no better example of that is the goalline INT. You have a 6-3 receiver with SEVEN INCHES AND FIFTY POUNDS on the guy in one-on-one coverage with him and you put up a jump ball that the DB can snag? Granted Marshall fell but the way Dave told it made it seem like that ball was nowhere near the height necessary to get it up and above the CB.

Dunno if anyone's noticed but this is the first time I've gotten on board with the 'Orton is not the future' crowd. To have our D play so well for a stretch...maybe if the offense had had their backs they wouldn't've given up a seven minute, eighty yard TD drive.

I dont' like your voting choices

Orton was NOT the weak point today. The offensive line sucked, plain and simple.

find the replay and watch

did orton make mistakes? sure, and that underthrow to marshall was one.

but between orton and marshall, they were the only 2 on offense giving the bronc’s a chance in this one. manning made many more err’s than did orton, who gave his team a solid chance to win the game.

so it was what, playcalling?

I know I was disgusted with two things I saw in the first half:

  1. So many screens. Come on Josh, they proved that not only are they fast but disciplined as well. That’s like the death knell for a screen. Give it up!
  2. Terrible run blocking (as mentioned above). Fouts was going off on how fast they were but all I saw was a bunch of LBs doing what they do when they’re untouched—blowing up plays in the backfield.

We already knew interior OL was going to be a target this offseason, and now I’ll be sorely disappointed if we don’t pick up 3-5 players in that area.

I think it would be better to hold criticism until you actually watch the game. No offense really meant at you, but between random media heads who just look at stat sheets and “predict” what happened in the game, it bugs the crap out of me.

Orton did great and I was more than pleased with how he performed and have no issues with him at QB.

Someone needs to work on Moreno’s endurance and leg strength… dude falls randomly for no reason and seems winded after 10 carries?

Staving off a heart attack from the shock of not getting hit by multiple defenders in the backfield….Wow that’s the worst game I’ve seen from an Oline in a long time.

If you had watched the game, you would know that Orton wasn't the problem in this game.

The OL had a ppor game and the playcalling was head scratching in places.

Why do people knock Orton when we lose? Cutler would have done no better in this game.

JC would have, and has in past. done worse.

I know that JC wasn’t specifically mentioned in the post….it just seems that in some people’s minds that the grief over losing Elway has been replaced by the grief over losing JC. JC didn’t earn it.

ugh

I have never been on board with the ‘we shoulda kept Jay’ crowd. After I read BMarsh’s gem of a quote post-trade (you can throw for 4000 yds and 25 tds all you want, it doesn’t matter if you don’t win, or something to that effect), and really looked back at how he performed in the clutch, I realized that McD made a brilliant move. The reason Elway is one of the top five qbs ever is because one of (the one?) records he still has left—fourth quarter comebacks.

Thank you for not putting words in my mouth. But please don’t put words in my mind.

I'm not "knock(ing) Orton when we lose."

Note that I’ve never done that before. In none of our previous losses have I called for his head. From what I heard from Dave today though it seemed like he was a big problem. Evidently not.

He certainly looked like the only bright spot (well him and the Beast) when I was watching during the first half. Completing eight of your first nine passes when your line is getting owned is a miraculous accomplishment.

Wanna change our short yardage efficiency/conversion????

For God’s sake pull Moreno and insert HILLIS! It’s just that easy. Cmon Josh…you’re doing a great job overall, don’t let arrogance or perhaps dislike for a player inhibit your better judgement!!!! I say Hillis would get us many more 3rd and ????‘s. He’s a manchild, just give him the damn ball. AND…instruct Moreno to stop dancing and shuffling or stutter-stepping when he’s picking a lane. When 2 and 3 defenders hit him in the backfield it's not Knowshon's fault...

I never thought I’d say this, but our O-line is this team’s biggest weakness…..I love the Ryans, but the rest of the line needs to be priority 1 this offseason.

by Kgrone on Dec 13, 2009 5:30 PM MST up reply actions

might want to consider

that Moreno has converted 10 out of 16 3rd/4th and 1 or 2 yards to go opportunities so far this year. That’s 63% of his attempts in short yardage have resulted in 1st downs. The rest of the offense has only an 11 out of 24 (or 46%) conversion rate.

Hillis was stopped just as easily in the few carries he had early on.

If you get hit behind the line, you got to be lucky to make yardage on a consistent basis. He never got a chance to get a head of steam, and that power just did not show. Perhaps it is the same in practice????

by idahobronc on Dec 13, 2009 11:54 PM MST up reply actions

The inability to move the ball had more to do with McD's play calling [terrible]

and our OLine getting shoved around. Kyle is doing the best he can with what they give him. Our defense gave the Colts their fist 21 points and then decided to play. In a game like that great defenses step up and keep us in the ball game. Nothing wrong with Kyle…

by bfree2bronc on Dec 13, 2009 5:07 PM MST reply actions

People knock Orton because

hasn’t done enough to stop it.

6.7 yards per attempt is not enough from our starting QB. Of course there were other problems but the QB has to be able to make up for some of them. He wasn’t the problem but neither was he really the solution.

I wouldn’t list him as the first player that I would like to upgrade, but he is definitely one of them.

I would go: 1) D-line 2) Center 3) QB

by Fan in Exile on Dec 13, 2009 5:11 PM MST reply actions

6.7 is playcalling and coverage

The play calling and coverage are dictated by and exploitative of Orton’s limitations.

by Fan in Exile on Dec 13, 2009 6:09 PM MST up reply actions

Great. Try to throw long and get sacked.

He had time for 3 steps drops only. Take what you can.

by idahobronc on Dec 13, 2009 11:56 PM MST up reply actions

If he were more mobile

then we could do things to avoid the sacks. I’m not saying he’s the biggest problem or really close to it.

Does anyone really think that we couldn’t find a better QB than Kyle Orton?

by Fan in Exile on Dec 14, 2009 5:37 AM MST up reply actions

I also fogot to point out

That it’s not just about going long Orton’s mid-range game is not what it could be either. He’s got a less than 50% completion rate at that range, which just needs to be better. The o-line is good enough to have 10-19 yard passes.

by Fan in Exile on Dec 14, 2009 5:39 AM MST up reply actions

I thought Kyle was our best player today not named Bmarsh

The Oline got absolutely dominated. Knowshon had nowhere to run, and Orton had no time…….

I can definitely see Orton as our qb for the foreseeable future

by Kgrone on Dec 13, 2009 5:26 PM MST reply actions   1 recs

Orton was not the problem.

Our offensive line has really been struggling. Losing Harris is bad enough, but Wiegmann has not exactly been great this season, and Hochstein is serviceable but not anything special which just speaks to how bad Hamilton was playing.

Clady also got beat quite a bit and and his play has been down too. The lines lack of play in the running game to today was atrocious. They got pushed around like kids.

by Gr3yStreet on Dec 13, 2009 6:30 PM MST reply actions

But I realized that whether Marshall falls is irrelevant—with those physical discrepancies you should be able to throw a ball that either BM catches or no one does easy.

Understood

But what you seem not to get, is that Brandon fell down. How is it Kyle’s fault when his receiver had no chance to be where he should’ve been because he was laying down?

Again, if you see that one, you can easily determine it wasn’t the greatest throw ever, but if Marshall doesn’t fall, he would have broke that record one reception sooner.

Umm...

Obviously when I acknowledge that Marshall fell I understand that he fell. Duh.

I realized that whether Marshall falls is irrelevant…

That would seem to indicate that I acknowledge, and dismiss, Marshall’s fall.

Sure he catches it if he doesn’t fall, but I’m saying that with such a size difference, and in a situation like that, it isn’t too hard to throw a ball that BM can catch but the little guy can’t.

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned, but there was another Colt right there too, so I guess that adds to the initial point of why throw there? – But Kyle’s said it plenty of times; ’I’ll put it up there and give Brandon a chance…’ – I like that mentality

I think everyone has gotten the wrong idea...

…and that there might be a reflexive pro-Orton bias due to all the anti-Orton, pro-Cutler sentiment found elsewhere. Just because Jay’s a joke doesn’t mean that the guy that replaces him has to be our savior, or our long-term answer at QB. Need an example? We eviscerate Jay daily for his terrible red zone ints. Kyle throws one today and it’s just a ‘bad pass’.

Look, my goal with this post was making sure that my ears didn’t get the full story. Snow prevented me from driving down the highway to my parents’ (typical Sunday) and pneumonia prevented me from going to a sports bar or something. Since the video stream blew, and the koa stream was already well ahead of it anyway (I always wanted to try muting the idiots in favor of listening to Logan’s play-by-play), at the half I just closed the video. Thankfully, my ears didn’t get the full story. Sorry that my disgust at us losing turned my inquiry into a bit of a rant.

But this has exposed to me, at least, the level of pro-Orton bias here. I guess it’s the debater in me but two of my points have gone unanswered. Look, I want to be wrong in this, and I’m all in favor of giving him two full years to learn the system, but it doesn’t reflect well on y’all when you choose to ignore my specific points and instead say things like ‘Orton played well compared to x, y, and z’. That would be called distracting from the original point through the use of relatives.

What are your points? that he threw an interception? You act like no QB besides bad ones ever throw interceptions. You ignore that Marshall fell. If a WR falls on the inside and there are two DB’s over there for the lob, guess what happens? It wasn’t a fade route.

What was your other point.. going out of bounds early? Would you rather him get nailed and we have to use Simms? This league is pretty funny — Sanchez gets knocked out of a game because he doesn’t slide and people rip him. Orton gets out so he doesn’t get hit and people rip him.

I think Orton is doing just fine with the protection he is getting and the separation his one [sometimes Gaffney] is getting.

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

My problem wasn't that he ran out of bounds...

ok well it does seem that way re-reading it. My problem was that he was too quick to the sideline. In the first situation, since I saw it, I know he could’ve gotten an extra yard or so before running out and been just fine. In the second I just make that assumption :p

ok and if there are two DBs in the area that pretty much invalidates my entire analysis

try to remove the mean-sounding portions of my response, it really wasn’t intended but it definitely appears to be there =)

You just don't come off like a Do'Urden

I don’t know if I spelled his last name correctly…. That’s the Drizzt your screen name references though? Wulfgar’s friend?

Magga Camarra, elf…. Orton played some pretty good ball…. By the stones….

No, I just figured I’d try to show that I wasn’t trying to be snarky in my replies. The reason I’m pro-Orton, is because I’ve seen a lot of good from him, and he seems to have a really good head on his shoulders. Now, if he could just get that set of feet of his to comply with what people refer to as ‘mobility’, I would have a complete argument as to why he’s our future.

As it is, I would love to see him lead us to said SB victories, and until he does, I have no problem staying objective or even getting angry with him when it’s deserved (like making ill-thought-out throws, but the INT was not ill-thought, when he released the ball Marshall had the positioning, and fell after the ball was released, just to be clear). ( =

I dig the heart and thoroughness you’ve showed in repeating ‘yeah but you guys didn’t answer this…..’ – I hate it when I don’t get to see a game, I can relate.

First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and someone else oughtta have a 'fair' shot ( =

So I don't come off as a one-dimensional character with likely borderline personality syndrome? :p

I think it’s a product of the fact that when a guy does play-by-play it’s almost entirely focused on where the ball is. Since every play starts out with Orton’s hands on the ball, too much of Logan’s description focuses on him. That then colored my pissiness about the game. As you can see above I still think the int starts with Orton, but BM falling after the throw is out isn’t good. Was he trying to adjust to a lower throw than he expected? Or is the fall inexplicable?

And consider yourself the official first person on MHR to get the reference in my sn :). I hope you’ve read the latest trilogy in the series because it’s surprisingly really good literature.

I have read the first 7 books, waiting on Starless Night to get transferred to the library I frequent… been waiting for over a week, think they forgot about me =)

Marshall fell afterwards, trying to adjust, I believe that Orton and he were on a slightly different route mindset. My memory could be incorrect, however. I am pretty confident there were two db’s back there — FS / CB.

I haven't read the latest

Matter of fact, ironically enough (Todd) – Starless Night was the last one I’ve read…. I got caught up in re-reading the Wheel of Time series so the new one will be a better read….

And that your header cracked me up ‘….likely borderline…’

I think it was a combination of him and the DB who got the pick adjusting… looked like the (shorter) cornerback’s feet tangled Brandon’s up, and the CB being lower to the ground gave him the leverage to not be tripped up, at least partly.

I read a blog somewhere...

that made the case that he suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder/Syndrome? I don’t remember the context of the argument or what BPD/S even is :p.

Kinda funny, one of my best friends had to stop after The Halfling’s Gem just recently to pick up The Gathering Storm. I was about to tackle the series all over again before reading TGS but I’ve got cross-country flight here on Sunday and TGS is looking unavoidable.

Anyway, the intricately woven combat scenes and Drizzt’s awesome-ness make the series good but the most recent trilogy has taken it to a whole new level.
