Draft, Rants, Hopes
1. I think McD is the best young coach in the league. However, his play calling, though often innovative, is mostly predictable and frustrating. How many times have we been stuffed on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1 trying to run it up the middle? Running to the outside on a short yardage situation every now and then would at least keep the opposing team's defense on their toes! Why does McD hate Hillis so much? Surely a fresh Hillis is a better option than a gassed and gimped Moreno at least once a possession. Nothing has frustrated me more this season than our short yardage play calling.
2. Who gives a rats ass about Marshall's record? It became a game within a game and took us away from our offense. Has anybody heard of Eddie Royal??? What the hell??? Can we throw to him more than once or twice a game? Can we design plays for him??? Can we throw to our TE's please???? I know there was pressure on the QB and that limited a lot of options but we can definitely do better than that.
3. Knowshon will probably have a good career. However, he has pissed me off as much as any player this year. I know he is a rookie but that is no excuse to not pick up a block every now and then or trip, with regularity, when you are about to break away for a big run.
4. Robert Ayers actually looks good lately. For a guy who gets only a handful of plays a game, he seems to get to the QB, when rushing and not containing, close to 50% of the time. He has some good moves for a rookie. Am I wrong in saying Alphonso Smith sucks? Has he been a big letdown or is it just me? I know the rookie learning curve justification but I haven't even seen any glimpses of brilliance from him.
5. My pre 2009 NFL Draft mancrush on Clay Mathews Jr. and Brian Orakpo was justified. Oh what could have been. Can you imagine Clay Mathews Jr. in a Broncos uniform?
6. I am loving the collapse of the Bears! They look like they will possibly finish 6-10, at best, or 5-11, at worst. They have Baltimore away, Minnesota home, and Detroit away (which is not as easy as you think). I predict they will lose the remaining three games and we will end up with a top ten pick. I think the Packers picked #9 last year after finishing 6-10. Brahahahahhaha!
7. Here is how the 2010 draft will likely shape out: There will most likely be five to six offensive players taken within the first ten picks, if not nine picks. I predict two QB's and two OL will definitely be top ten. I would not be shocked if a WR like Dez Bryant is picked up by the Chiefs. That would be five offensive players and possibly six if there is a run, which is likely, on QBs. If this is the case, we would end up with the 3rd, maybe 4th, or 5th best defensive player in the draft. This would be great.
8. Here is who I would pick. I can imagine a scenario where Berry or McCoy slips to #8 or #9. If they are on the board we should not hesitate. It is obviously not likely they will fall. Rolando McClain, by the time the combine is over, will be considered an elite LB. No matter what other people say, I still consider Taylor Mays to be an elite prospect. I would jump on any of these guys. Joe Haden and Carlos Dunlap deserve some consideration.
9. I think we should draft a player in the second or third round specifically for their special teams ability. How much has Devin Hester or Josh Cribbs helped their respective teams? We need more team speed, and adding someone who can return punts, kicks, and run the wildcat every now and then would give opposing teams fits. We should also draft a punter. Interior offensive line has to be addressed within the first three rounds. I would also like more depth at running back.

Yep
McD’s stubborness about using Hillis on third down short yardage situations really has me ticked off. He was quoted as saying we had our best guy (Moreno) in there but Knowshon is accustomed to having Buckhalter spell him and seemed to be sucking wind.
And yes, it would be sweet to have that # 1 back instead of Alphonso. It’s terribly disappointing that we had to pick up Law to play the nickel. Personally, I was high on the guy but not for a number one pick. Too soon to use the “B” though.
As for 2010 draft, the higher the pick the Bears give us… the more likely we trade down.
Earlier in the year, Phonz was making lots of plays, but
since then he hasn’t played too well. Just give him some time and I think we’ll see a change in his play.

do you think that his ankle injury
earlier this year is cause for his lack of production? I swear he’s missing a burst that I saw repeatedly during preseason.

He definitely looked good early in the year.
It probably was his ankle injury. Plus he’s a rookie. What else can we expect but growing pains?

I think you are being too hard on the rookies.
We are spoiled today with instant gratification, but if memory serves me correctly – the venerable future Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe didn’t even start his first year. Rod Smith spent his first year on the practice squad.
Give these guys a chance to develop! To learn.
Other than that, nice post. I am really loving da Bears this year. ;-)

Trevor Pryce was innactive his whole rookie year, Ryan Harris didn't take an offensive snap...
..even when healthy, Champ Bailey was widely panned in Washington, DeAngelo Williams was severely disappointing in Carolina, Mario Williams probably cost Caserly his job in Houston, etc, etc, etc.
It amazing that nobody would pan a kid for going to Microsoft from Harvard and not being an Executive Vice President in a year, but the sky is falling when a rookie isn’t a game changer in a year.

I totally agree with you Tim.
If rookies need anything, it would be time to develop. Not every rookie has an “Adrian Peterson like” year in their first year in the NFL.

Eddie Royal still isn’t open.
A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.
Right on,
he seems to give up on his routes….a lot! Not the same Eddie we had last year.

if B.Marsh
is open/making plays, why not give it to him?

Get it off your chest, bro.
Just once, on third or fourth and short, I’d like to see a play fake, or something more original than a stuff to the middle. How many times do you have to bang your head into a wall before you realize that the frikkin wall aint going anywhere?
I agree with you about Clay Matthews. I’m with you on McClain in the draft, too, but how’s this for a bizarre concept? Our first rounder and Marshall for the rights to draft Suh? Just a thought.
Just as grandma used to say, “Die, Bears, die!”.
On the idea of trading Marshall and our 1st for Suh...
NO. I’m sorry, I’m not giving up one of the best offensive playmakers in football and a valuable pick. Suh is a great great player but I would rather have a different 1st rounder and Marshall.
"Really, I'm a high-motor guy. Tough, hard-nosed, a hard runner, can make you miss at times. And just competitive. I love to play the game and I bring that energy to my team. So, we'll see how that goes." - Knowshon Moreno
Knowshon Moreno=ROY
Suh is a great college player
but the potential to be a great NFL player is not worth a proven #1 WR and a 1st.
Exactly.

If you got it use it!
Feeding the Beast will open up the offense for Royal…However, we need to draft a WR with playing making skills in the 2nd or 3rd round. Believe it or not we are weak at WR. Every team has closed down Royal and the end result is the Beast.
