The Weekly "I'm Tired" Rant

Welcome to the home of all things "Annoying" and "Wearisome".  Hope you enjoy my frustrated overflow...

1.     I'm tired of the MHR Denver Game Threads.   I used to love watching the game, and chatting on the threads with other fans about the plays and the players, because it was kind of like being at the game.  You could cheer with people around the country as the game unfolded.   It really was a cool thing.

But then something happened.  A certain level of negativity and discord started manifesting itself, especially when the team was loosing... and more and more of the content became about blaming this player or that coach for any play that didn't result in a big gain or a touchdown.  If the team is winning, things aren't to bad... but if they are losing... or are behind... the threads seem to take an unfortunate  turn for the worse.

I remember how disapointed I was in the Denver Fans when they boo'd Kyle Orton at the Training Camp practice at Invesco.  Honestly, I was embarassed to be a Bronco Fan that day.  I have always believed that Denver has had the best, and classiest fanbase in all of football... but this year has cast a dark shaddow on that... and I am growing concerned that my assessment of our fanbase could be way off.

A mentor of mine told me once... "You find out exactly what's in side the orange, when you squeeze it."  And I think that is true.  Anyone can be a loyal and devoted fan when a team is winning.  However, it is when the pressure is turned up that the true nature of a fan is revealed.  When a few bad plays happen... or a few mistakes are made... or the team find's itself down by 21 points after the first quarter... what is your response?  When you get squeezed, what comes out?

I guess what it seems to boil down to, is that our fan base seems to becoming more and more "immature".  If our team isn't winning the way we want, then we throw a fit, or curse the players and coaches, or we scrutinize and criticize every decision that didn't turn out perfectly in our favor.  Isn't this exactly what we dis-like about San Diego and Raider Fans?  It is easy to see in others, but oh-so-difficult to see in ourselves.  Maybe it's time to take a good long look into the mirror.

I'm not saying that all the game threads are bad... or that those who comment there are bad... or that I will never participate or go to a game thread again...   I'm just saying that sometimes the negativity toward the team, players and coaches can really spoil the whole thing.  I know that we are all passionate fans, but maybe we need to keep our witt's about us during the game and just keep cheering our team on.  That's what fans do.

2.     I'm tired of the "Why didn't the coach put in Peyton Hillis????" chatter.  Look, if you couldn't tell by my I.D., I love me some Hillis!  I think he is a very good player, who plays football "Old School" Style... and I love it.  I would love to see more of Hillis in the offense.

But with that said, some of us around here need to "GROW UP!!!" in regards to Hillis' role in the offense this year.  Don't you think that Coach McDaniels knows a little bit more about how Hillis fits into the offense than we do?  Don't you think that Coach McD sees more of Peyton's strengths and weaknesses than we do... after all, he does get to see the guy in practice every day.   Don't you think McD is trying to put the very best players out on the field at all times... the players that he thinks are going to give the team the best shot at winning?  Do you seriously think that McDaniels isn't playing Hillis because he has some personal grudge against the guy?  Some of this is just silly-ness.

The truth is, what we have seen from Hillis this year has been both good and bad.  He looked amazing against the 3rd stringers at KC, but all the other times that he has gotten touches... not so much.  Remember the fumbled Kick-off?  Remember getting stuffed on a few 3rd and shorts?  Remember all the penalties early on?  Remember him getting stuffed at the goalline?  This week... A 2 yard gainer... not exactly pro-bowl stuff.

Again, don't get me wrong.  I love the guy, and think he is a player.  But, I also think we need to let go of this crazy fantasy that Hillis is somehow the answer to our SuperBowl Dreams.  He will be a valuable tool going forward... but he will also be a part of the whole, not the whole itself.

3.     I'm tired of "The play calling was awful" chirping every time we lose.  Do you understand how foolish you sound when you say that?  If you don't know... you sound "foolish".  Now you know.

Blaming a loss on the "play calling", is like blaming your triple bogey on your golf clubs.  Funny how the "birdies and pars" are all you, but the "triple bogeys" are all on your club's.  Take this from a guy who sells golf equiptment... It's not the clubs.

It really is a pretty "lazy" criticism to go after the play calling because, you could easily criticize the play call on every single down... either on Defense or Offense.  If the play goes for 10 yards... you say that was an great offensive play call... or you could say that it was a horrible Defensive play call.  If the play get's blown up for a loss, you could say that it was a horrible Offensive play call... or you could say it was the right Defensive call.  On every play, there is a winner, and a loser... and when your team loses, it really is the cowards way to try to shrink the game down into a microcosm of seemingly bad play calls... or at least to say they were bad play calls because of the end result.

So, if it's 3rd and 1... on the 50 yard line... do you run, or do you pass?  If you pass, and you fail, 1/2 of us would criticize the fact that we didn't pound it home!!!  If you run up the middle, and you fail, 1/2 of us would criticize the fact that we should have tried to run the ball outside!!!  If you try to stretch a run around the outside, and you fail, 1/2 of us would criticize the fact that we should have tried a play-action pass... or anything other than what was called.  Trust me, anyone can sit on a couch, and when a play doesn't work, criticize the play call.

If it was really as easy as saying it was poor play calling, then why even have players actually play the game?  Why not just have two coaches play a simulated game in a booth somewhere, and who ever called the best plays would win, and then we could all blame poor play calling on the coach, if we lost.   Even the best play call, will look like the wrong play call if the players on the field fail to execute that play effectively.  When players execute, the coach looks like a genius, and when they don't, the coach looks like a dunce.

The interesting thing is that prior to this weeks game, there were multiple posts pointing out the need for the Broncos to pound the rock against the Colts.  It was almost unanimously agreed upon that running the ball was going to be the key in controling the clock and keeping Mr. Manning off of the feild.  Nobody wanted to get into a shootout with the Colts, and for good reason.

And what did Coach McDaniels try to do?  Exactly what we said.  He consistently worked to establish the running game, something we all, before the game, thought we should do.  However, because the team was relatively unsuccessful in doing so... Now the banner is "the coach get's a D for poor play calling."  Anyone else find this kind of Humorous?  It's tiring... but also kind of funny.

4.     I'm tired of San Diego Chargers winning games.  It pains me to say this, but San Diego has a pretty good ball club.  They look like a ball club that was built to beat the Colts.  My guess is that Indy would like to face anyone except Denver or San Diego in the play-offs, because both teams match up against them relatively well.  I have been blown away by San Diego's receivers this year... and I will go out on a limb and say that they have the best WR/TE corp. in football.  Put that together with Mrs. Rivers and you have a team that could easily go toe-to-toe with Indy... or anyone else in the NFL for that matter.  I can see SD making some waves in the playoff's this year.  (That is unless they face Denver in the first round)

Well, time to shake off the loss and get our heads back into this weekend.  They are all "must win's" from this point forward.  Denver, you hold your destiny in your own hands...

GO BRONCOS!!!!!

Excellent Rant!

Great stuff as always. Let’s build some momentum over the next 3 games and carry it into the playoffs. Go Broncos!

This just in...

The Raiders have announced that they may need to Forfeit the game on Sunday due to a mysterious illness that has swept through the entire team. Doctor’s believe that it is a serious outbreak of “wussitus”. Seems to have infected everyone. I’ll keep you all posted if anything else unfolds!

I heard reports that it was Jamarcititus B.

Symptoms include large fur coats, lack of pocket presence, a strong right arm, calling out your teammates and a complete inability to diagnose a defensive scheme.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

This fan site was buit and constructed for any and all fan opinions and views.

Fans will rant when things don’t go exactly the way they feel they should and rightly so, it relieves tension and stress. I for one do not want to hear from a fan’s spouse or close friend that one of the bloggers just had a stroke because he or she was being politely quiet about something that was on their mind. Would you? I didn’t think so and I rant about everything especially politics and I will not be like a lamb being lead to slaughter if I have something on my mind. Just won’t happen. But, with all of that said you points are great appreciated and noted, now, where was I?

Oh yeah, I have a feeling there is something deeper wrong with Hillis. He hasn’t been the same after the season ending injury when jay cutser trowing off of his heel almost got our man killed. I have never forgivin that player [expletive cursing under my lips] and probably won’t. In my finite little opinion, that stupid character ended our playoff hopes on that play. Hillis hasn’t been the same. Period.

By the wat, it is the clubs fault when you make a triple bogey, just ask any golfer, they’ll tell ya. Rant? Hell yes I’ll rant on the Threads that’s what they are there for. Everyone knows peyton was going to have a 9 TD day just ask someone they’ll tell. That play was a “WTF”, yeah…it was! I get tired of being tired and that’s because I’ve been slack in this blog and haven’t exercised properly…That’s my fault. Honestly though, how can anybody not be enthused with how the Broncos play football? I can’t and I love every moment of it, whether they are great, good or bad…

Yep.... not sure about Hillis either. We sure did get some flashes of the old Hillis against KC.

His injury last year was pretty crazy… and some thought maybe a career ender. I’m just glad he’s still on the team and runnin’ hard when he get’s the chance!

Also, I'm cool with people venting... don't want anyone blowing a gasket because they can't release it....

but it is difficult too to maintain a “hopeful” attitude when everyone is shouting that the ship is sinking.

Take the game on Sunday. We got down a quick 21 points… and most everyone in the threads had turned on the team. But it was only the first quarter… and the team ultimately came back and made a real game out of it. Had they gotten a stop on 3rd down on that last drive, they would have been within 8 and had a chance to drive down and tie it up.

My point is that sometimes people jump the ship too soon. I want my team to play all 60 minutes… and I guess I want fans to hang in for all 60 minutes too. Maybe I’m an Idealist… but I guess that might not be a bad thing.

But, count the drives the offense had and then see how many points wwe had what do we come up with? Aaah…The offense didn’t live up to their end of the bargain, IMHO anyway.

LOVE IT

Love it all. Especially the game thread points. It’s wonderful, and people are reasonable when they’re winning… but it’s downright like the preseason Post’s message boards when things are going well. I just avoid it like the plague now. Your rants have points of interest and depth rather than “this sucks and that sucks and Clady sucks” Clady? Bad game…sure. Even the best have bad games. But to say Clady sucks is disproportionate and crazy.

by BroncoInExile on Dec 14, 2009 5:01 PM MST reply actions

Yea... Clady sure hasn't had quite the year he had last year...

and he certainly didn’t have a great game in Indy…. but again…. might be just a little too early to throw him to the wolves. I would like to see some of these “Clady Sucks” commentators tell him that to his face. My guess is that those guys would be the one’s who suck…

His rookie season was just unbelievable.

Whether it’s an injury, new system, sophmore slump… doesn’t matter. He’s still having a REALLY GOOD year. It’s like he was annointed into the HOF last year and anything short gets a “Clady sucks, he’s regressing…” ok, I gotta stop before I fume.

Out there idea that I've not seen said

How much did Ben Hamilton’s benching affect his play? I haven’t tracked it closely but his (minor) decline seems to have coincided with Hamilton’s absence. Hamilton was a leader on that line and perhaps without him, Clady’s having to think before reacting a bit more than he used to. Which would be encouraging because then it’s just an experience and not a skill thing.

that's interesting

because of how long they’ve worked side-by-side as opposed to how little Clady and Hoch have worked together. I like where you’re headed there.

It would be interesting to see some before and after… though even if I did watch film, I’m sure i wouldn’t pick it up… to me it’s just a thought. But it makes a bit of sense. You always hear about the game slowing down etc etc… what if the guy who helped it slow down for you disappears?

Hey, don't get down on the "immaturity" thing.

There are several types of fans and it just so happens the biggest group happens to be the emotional ones who live and die with each play. I happen to be one of those types of fans, but that doesn’t mean I’m some pimply faced 13 year old – I just act like one. lol

I gave you a rec also HRU. You did hit it right on. As far as the game day threads I avoid them for a couple of reasons. The biggest one is I’m too slow of a typer. So I just don’t get involved. I'm really annoyed to learn that my golf struggles aren't all on the clubs...

…I coulda swore that there was no way I have something to do with it.

On a serious note, thanks for these. I couldn’t agree more. I rarely have anything to say on the game threads— and when I do it might come across as negative— but some of us are in NFL wastelands surrounded by nobody that has a clue whats going on on the TV. When I pop up, I’m usually fishing for insight…much like when I’d be sitting next to my brothers or dad at the stadium or in front of a TV and I’d turn to them and say “What the @#$# was that all about?” Its not hate, its confusion— and it never goes away in the glorious football world where just about anything can happen. Unfortunately my brothers and dad are a long way away, and being dudes and all the last thing we’re wanting to do during a Broncos game is be yapping on the phone like sorority sisters or something. My love and passion for the Broncos has endured through the darkest moment, but sometimes my heart or mind is temporarily perplexed.

Good post but the play calling did suck on the weekend....

What did Einstein say about insanity being trying the same thing over and over and hoping for a different result. McD has done this CONSISTENTLY on 3rd and 4th and short.
The nest thing is that normally McD does learn from this.
And yeah, U love me some Hillis, and he should have been used more PERIOD. Would have been better for the team and Moreno….Moreno was beat and flat, we had a fresh back on the sideline but kept piunding the crap out of Moreno…made no sense!

and you will see that the Broncos have been fairly successful this year in both situations. You view is clouded by the 1 for 6 result on Sunday.

Totally agree on the first point. I vowed not to return to the gameday threads a few weeks ago, but ofcourse I couldnt resist last sunday….should have known better….its strange how fast the negativity can take you over once ur in there…
Anyway, I remember, my first time at Invesco during the training camp session this summer… when they boo’ed, I was quite disappointed myself as well…

And yeah..as much as I like Peyton Hillis…if he would have been the perfect matchup then he would be out there… but if McD thinks differently then im sure he has a reason for it…

Keep up the great work! Always enjoy ur weekly piece!

Nice Rant Hillis,

I tried the MHR game day thread thing once, not worth my time as it is just flat to emotional. I don’t need a blog thread to be emotional about the ebb and flow of the game, nor do I need read everyone else’s knee jerk reactions to things that didn’t quite go right. Got old very quick for me.

I too am tired of the Chargers winning, but, you have to admit they are playing very well. I think they have the biggest (height and weight) starting receiver lineup in football and that is creating a lot of match up issues with everyone they play.

Way to rant, Hillis!!!!

Agree with every word. I don’t go to the thread unless I am having trouble with a feed or the game is simply unavailable to me—then it is a lifesaver!!

I also have been struck with the intensity and absoluteness of the statements regarding play-calling. Judging play-calling on a blog is WAY too easy (sarcasm here); all you have to do to be taken seriously is to focus on the failed play (no sarcasm here). I still wonder, as I stated earlier in the week, what those who feel so passionately about this topic would learn if they could match the results of their call on EVERY play, especially the successful ones, against the actual outcome. I can’t count the times I predicted a particular style call, thinking it would work, only to have something entirely different pop up and be magnificently successful. It is just soooooo difficult to judge what would have happened had my play been called. I grant any and all the right to disagree with a call (I do, and often), but sometimes when my MHR friends point a finger at McD for being stubborn or arrogant in his play-calling (or hint at insanity), I have to refrain from pointing out where the other three fingers are pointing. It is just too easy to retrospectively cherry-pick plays and trends…judging play-calling is inherently an exercise in constructing alternative universes……BUT that is where the fun is!
So, let’s keep doing it, but remember the pit-falls and try to keep the judgments of personal attributes and motivations out of it, despite the depth of passion we have for our team and its success.

and PS

I have different thoughts about judging game planning. Nice that you pointed out that we game-planned for one scenario (heavy use of and success with the run on offense), then shifted the game-plan to what worked…. (at least I interpreted you as saying that). So, to me, any unclarified comments about bad game-planning seem to miss the point.

Ha Ha Ha...I aways point three fingers at myself, idaho.

I did more cushing on offense and special teams this week than on defense even when they let Manning march down the field three times…That’s just Manning of course and who can stop him if he is on? Nobody.

Bfree-

I know you may say the words I mentioned, but I have to say that I am always mentally seeing the smile I think is there at the same time. Keep the passion! Love them Broncs!

ANOTHER great rant!

I look for these every week, and enjoy every one of them!

Take my advice... I'm not using it!

I don’t even venture into the game threads even more for the exact reason you posted—and not because it’s there, but because I know with my mindset during the game I would only add more negativity to the mix.

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

^Needs explaining: don't call someone asking uncomfortable, slightly antagonistic questions trolls. In all odds they probably just want to learn. It's real easy to differentiate a 'Socratic' post from a trolling one (unless you're a resident of WCG).
^Needs further explaining: I have yet to post anything on WCG, don't worry, I'm not trying to rationalize anything I've done. I've just lurked over there and man, they are the model of post-peloponnesian war Athens.

Just an idea...

People start game threads for non-Bronco games all the time. I would prefer to just watch the game so I wouldn’t do this, but if you really enjoy commenting on line during the game, why not start a specialty thread? Make the game rules quite clear about the kind of chat that’s welcome and that which is not.

I mean… this “sick of game thread” theme is becoming a pretty common topic in here. Put an end to it.

The official one will always be there. Give people an alternative. Who knows? Maybe it will get invaded too after a while but it may be worth a try man.

good rant

I’d go as far as if you do not support Kyle Orton as the broncos starting qb, than you aren’t a bronco fan any longer. I’m so tired of people “fans” bashing him or saying he can’t do this or that. The guy has preformed at a high level with two bad injuries. One last thing: THIS JUST IN MEMO:!!!!! ATTN: BRONCOS FANS
There will never be another John Elway.
Move on you have a good team again.
P.S. Cutler will never be Elway

I don't give up

I guess from watching the Broncos through the Elway days has given me a “never say never” attitude. When we get down in a game, I just don’t get too worried because I believe in my team and their ability. I do not miss watching a game on TV EVER. I live in Oklahoma so I have to buy NFL Sunday Ticket to watch my Broncos. To me, well worth it. For more than the last 20 something years, I have watched every play whether it is preseason, regular season, playoff, super bowl, win, or loss. Yes, I bought a Jay Cutler jersey and wish I would have waited for a Kyle Orton. But what I wear this year while watching games is my Orange John Elway 1984 throwback jersey. If I can’t be home, because I am a locomotive engineer and must work to pay for my Directv and Bud Light, I record on the DVR. I try not to find the outcome if I can help it so I can watch the game just as it was live. I did peek the other day on my Iphone just for a few minutes to see Indy go up 14-0. When I got home to watch on DVR, I didn’t just fast forward to that point, I watched the whole game minus commercials. Broncos football is a religion in my house. Tornado sirens could be going off and as long as the power stays on to my tv, I am not leaving my Broncos. Enough bragging. LET US COME TOGETHER BRONCO FANS!!!!!

About St. Legoland

Indy chooses not to use the run to setup the pass. While they do not have many yards racked up on the ground, it’s mainly because their passing game is so efficient, they don’t need to rely on it. They are efficient when they go it, evidenced by their current stats: over 1100 yards rushing, but almost 5 YPC using their top 3 RBs.

St. Legoland cannot run the ball as effectively as they used to. Without an every-down back, it’s a problem for them in the playoffs and may be the reason for their eventual failure. Their rushing total is comparable to Indy’s, but their average YPC are much lower, when looking at LDT and DS: 3.2 and 3.3 YPC. Their defense is also not good enough against the run – another concern for them in the playoffs.

These are key differences between these ball clubs at the moment.

Maturity

I think maturity has set in when a person begins to notice that each teams fans are from the same pool of people. Even Raider fans are the same as us. Charger fans. They just have a different team to root for (or agonize over).

Dividing and subdividing fans is fun and all, but ultimately, we’re all part of the same group.

I agree in the "one people, one fan" sentiment

but there’s a reason why there are more Raider fans than Bronco fans that have been told they can no longer vote in elections. Some of these fans can’t separate themselves from their team and have a “football” conversation though. Same can be said for bronco fans, but I see it a lot with raider fans.

I'm glad we had this talk.

Well

I have waited for several days to give my input here. I was in the game day threads during the Colts game and I was trying to get people to give the Broncos a chance. There was a lot of negativity in the threads and a few of us were trying to be positiive. I don’t like bad plays, bad starts,or losing games anymore than anyone else but I do also think that any game can turn! I guess I know that fans want to vent. I suppose I know that fans will be shocked and unhappy with bad plays. I dont understand why posting negative thoughts makes you feel better! Personnaly I prefer posting positive thoughts!! My thinking is that if I keep thinking the best, the best will happen. I am a glass half full guy so take that for what it is worth but really. Expect the best, plan for the worst and you won’t be disappointed.

Opinions are like......, Well anyway, this is mine.
