Thanks Doug,
Love the article on Orton by Klis.
Orton reinforced he has not necessarily been a winning quarterback because of a strong defense and strong running game, but because he’s a winner, period.
Amazing how the DP can put together some good articles when they stop bashing McDaniels and Orton.
Denver rookie head coach Josh McDaniels doesn't have a grasp on how to build a team." - John Clayton, April 23rd, 2009
I guess you didn't read Krieger.
I don’t get why some of the local pundits don’t get the concept that systems aren’t 100% portable in terms of personnel. This offense ‘thrived’ last year, so this year it must be because of the QB. Never mind that the protections are completely different (i.e. The old blocking concept played off play action and moving pockets, the new system is more traditional drops, shot gun looks) that Denver lacks a speed threat to keep the S’s honest, and that all of three key players have ever played this system before.
What amazes me most is the institutional inability to think back more than a couple of years. The Patriot system has never been known for its explosiveness. The explosiveness happened with the infusion of one of the most dangerous WR’s to ever play the game, which rippled across the entire offense and gave rise to the likes of Wes Welker. Apparently, Obama’s long arch of history isn’t applicable in the NFL— at least if you’re a professional sports writer who should at least take the time to understand his subject.

Krieger is a wannabe political writer,
who got “stuck” writing sports columns and since McDaniels has arrived in town most of his articles have would be put to better use as toilet paper than reading material.
This is the same guy who after we our first two said
But they still are a team with a new coaching staff implementing new schemes on both sides of the ball with a lot of new players. Against better teams than they’ve played so far, they still have a lot to prove.
Never liked Krieger, thus I rarely read his BS

Krieger's article was downright strange
Orton is a winner, so you don’t keep him? Okay, that’s peculiar….but this one was even weirder:
Except for the quarterback and running backs, this year’s offense is pretty much the same group. .
Well, except for a 2/5 of our O-line having changed, Gaffney at WR, Orton at QB, McD as the signal caller, every RB except Hillis changed and a brand new offensive system, he’s correct. No reason for all of those changes to influence anything, right?
He also forgot that it’s December and we’re winning, but that probably isn’t important either.

Watching the game last night one thing really stood out to me… size of the line:
monroe: 6-5, 320
manuwai: 6-2, 333
meester: 6-3, 311
nwaneri: 6-2, 329
britton: 6-6, 310
us:
clady: 6-6, 325
hochstein: 6-4, 305
[olsen: 6-5, 308]
wiegmann: 6-2, 285
kuper: 6-4, 303
harris: 6-5, 300
[polumbus: 6-8, 300]
We give up 28 pounds at LG, 26 at C, 26 at RG, 10 at RT compared with Jville. That is a lot of weight…
A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.
A perfect example of the fallacy that schemes should be seamlessly portable.
The Denver offensive line is a great match for the Shanahan philosophy, yet a weak link in the McD philosophy. Outside of Clady and Harris, these guys can’t be expected to hold up for a more traditional pocket passing attack. Thus, the dink-dunk passing game that frustrates so many is more an exercise in rationality than it is an indictment of KO’s limitations as a QB. Do what you think you have the best chance of doing, not what you wish you could do.

I was surprised about the kuper wait and I am curious if we may actually trade him… he has done pretty good in my opinion, but if he doesn’t fit the weight requirements…? He is 6’4 so maybe he can add some mass

I don't think Kuper is a problem...
…its at LG and C. Kuper has largely been a rock no matter what they ask him to do.

Question for someone here at MHR
Once Shanny decides to coach a team again, and assuming he gets atleast 7 million a year, will the 7 million we owe him next year and the year after that be funneled towards players ala Marshall or Doom? Do Coaches salaries count against the salary cap?
Never give in, never give in
It has no bearing on the cap...
but it has a lot of bearing on the cash flow of the team. As of now, the team is paying Shanahan $7 Million a year to do nothing. When he’s hired, whatever he gets paid will diminish the Broncos’ payout due to him. If he makes $7 Million or more at the new team, they owe him nothing.
Remember, it presently looks like there’s going to be an uncapped year, so available cash becomes the more meaningful measurement. Like they drill into your head in business school, cash is king. It’s far more important than accounting profitability.

So yes, that cash should be used to pay players
I’m sure in their budget plan, the funds are encumbered, so the removal of that encumbrance would free up the funds for other uses, or drop straight to the net income line.

Interesting McD quote..
paraphrased in response to the question about being pretty hard on the offensive line earlier this week due to difficulties with short yardage :
I wasn’t any harder on the O-Line than I was the Tight Ends, Fullback, Playcalling.

That Marshall interview was tough to watch.
It just took me right back to DWill thoughts. Man, that’s rough, especially for those closest to Chris.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Girl, you don't need to be a 10, as long as you have a good smile and smell like bacon.
Not that it matters but Gil Brandt seems to think
the Broncos-Raiders first game this season was closer than it was. 23-3 Gil, not 23 to 13. Anyway…
Thanks Doug!
