QB Tom B. must get some reps soon
I just demoted Chris Simms. To make a valid playoff run and not be one and done, we need to prep our backup QB. To do so this late in the season means we need a blow-out game or three so TB can get the needed reps. So we need more than just a win this Sunday against KC. We need a blowout!
There are three games that might allow Josh to put TB in in the fourth quarter to get the needed reps.; KC, OAKLAND, KC, thats it.
I do not want to see Chris S in the game again.
We can not enter the playoffs and be sucessful with out having a backup QB. There is only the TB option as there is no one from outside of our team that could bring value on short notice given the complexity of our system. The learning curve is too steep!
Do you expect Josh to give TB game time reps this year? Or will Josh hang with Chris S?

Unfortunately
Since Chris is still on the roster I must assume he is the number 2 QB. Love Simms, but sometimes you just cannot make it back.
If he is still #2, he is an inadequate #2
and we do not know if TB is an improvement at this moment. BUT give TB some reps and I think he would quickly jump ahead of CS on the depth chart.
Who. Does. #2. Work. For?

I’m afraid that we’re stuck with Sims for the rest of this season. Plus I don’t know that this offense has what it takes to blow any one out. Sorry

My point is not to rush TB
but to be better prepared if KO goes down. I think there is great risk to the fortune of our Broncos if KO goes down without a better backup than CS. TB is the only chance to cover that.

I can't believe I'm saying this but...
It doesn’t matter who our #2 is, If Kyle Orton goes down the season is over.
Kyle Freakin Orton, how is it that this man has become irreplaceable.

RM Thunder, I agreee and rec your comment
If however we get a goood lead in the game, we should work on fixing that KO is irreplaceable!
Did you notice that BB pulled Tom Brady
toward the end of the NO blowout? Smart to get at least a few reps to the young backup.
Totally on board with the spirit of this post
I was one of the biggest fans of us picking up Simms, but he’s been a huge disappointment in the two games he played in. Dude just looked lost. He does NOT have the capability to help us win a football game. If we are in a situation where the game is either well in hand or well out of hand, Brandstater needs to get reps…if nothing else then just for the practice factor in looking toward his future with the team.
Simms is out this off-season. I see us dropping Simms and drafting another QB this off-season.

I could see us dropping Simms in the off-season
but I’m less than convinced that having what amounts to two rookies for the backup work would be the best choice to be made.

That fact that McD didn't trust him (Simms) enough in the first 4 games leads me to believe he doesn't trust either one.
It was a risky proposition to play Kyle with the injured gloved finger. Lucky for us it worked out for us. Simms could do a better job I think if he had more reps. What has he played since the life threatening injury? 2 or 3 qtrs of preseason? Tom looked terrible in his first outing, preseason game 3? I think. But came back and made 180 switch in the last game. I don’t know won’t try to out guess McD, he knows more about football than everyone on this site put together. I have to trust his instincts.
McD
I’ve been very critical of him during our losses and I believe my positions were justified. But I do agree with you that he has a higher football IQ than most.
TB is holding a clipboard as long as it’s the 2009 season. I’m afraid Chris Simms is our #2 QB, as bad as he has looked. And, don’t forget we are also paying him like he’s a #2 or #1 QB.
Obviously, he won’t be #1 in the depth chart in Denver. Maybe in Oakland. =)

The depths of McDaniels' finagling of this season has been enough give most people gray hair.
Dangling the strings of players in a theatre of men is quite daunting to say the least. McDaniels picked Branstater for a reason. Cassel espoused the wooden pedestal for a good while until he was called upon to savior the Patriot fallen face first in the mud. I don’t endorse nor believe that a rookie quarterback should be fed to the lions, just take a look at the Jets and Lions to make up our minute litle minds. I know…I know….They were desparate for something to give the people a feel good notion…Big mistake. Look at Flacco and Ryan. They were the glamor boys of last year…I mean, I tell you, rookies making good…Man oh man have they had a rude awakening. Suffering at the feet of relentless hammering of powerful men want to tear their heads clean off…whew…lambs to slaughter…I’m not into that business as dumb as I may seem. Babes need the nursing before they walk…
Simms Time
will be Garbage Time, hopefully against the Chiefs twice, and our last against the Raiders. Just so he gets the reps he needs to catch up a bit in the offense, as he might be called upon in the playoffs. As much as I like the guy, it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to redeem himself. At least not in Denver.
With Orton playing so well and voted by other NFL players as one of the most underrated in the league, he’ll be our starting QB for a few more years. He’s just that smart and has enough talent to get us back to being relevant again. If he falters in the big game, however, TB may have his chance in 2011. 2010’s too soon, if you ask me; I think at best, TB will play garbage time next year, but that’s his ceiling.
As far as Flacco and Ryan are concerned, they are good QBs. They really are. However, put them in McD’s system this week and they’d regress so much, they wouldn’t be able to start ’till next year at the earliest. Basically, I am saying that they are playing in simpler offenses. And each of their teams last year were better overall than the teams that Sanchez and Stafford have joined. Both the Lions and Jets need a good OC.

If Kyle goes down
My personal oppinion is that the roster spot occupied by Chris Simm would be as well served by having Elam rejoin us for the final run – maybe a little continuity from the glory years.
If Kyle does go down and McD does not believe TB is ready, then it is wild horses to the max. Buck, Moreno and Larsen in the backfield, Royal and BM becoming our passers. Keep the defense so confused they don’t have time to confuse our “OB”.
I love your optimisim about the sucess of the WILDEHOURSES
we need all the Opt we can get!! What fun for the fans. But not the way to win out.
Disagree about the roster spot for Elam, whom I love from bygone days.

not intended as an endorsement of Elam
intended to say that having Simms on the roster is a total waste of that spot. Agree wild horses is not the way to win out, but it does give us a much better chance than putting Simms in – he could not hold a lead against Washington!
Flunkie I think you are right: Simms is a wasted
roaster spot. One if not the first decision McD made. Whould he have made it after trading for Orton? No I do not But still his bad.
So the question is who is out there that should fill that spot to help us get glory!

I totally love how you started this post by saying “I just demoted Chris Simms.” Right to the point Coach el Don of the Tacos. Totally awesome. :)
I’m of the opinion that if Orton goes out, McD will make the right move. I remember the first preseason game when Orton looked like a deer in headlights on every snap. Uncomfortable, rushing, holding on too long, 3 INT, etc.
Not that Mr. Simms should get a pass that he hasn’t played live ball in this system or the NFL for two years. You have to expect your backup to perform whenever he’s called upon. Yet with all the mostly successful decisions McDaniels has made so far, there must be something in weekly practices, film study, 2nd/3rd team reps that he sees Simms in a better position to backup than Tommy B.
Next year though I would hope to see Tommy B. a bit more. Just so that I could see more of what looked so promising during the preseason.
Cannot share your optimism
I wrote after the disaster with Diego that McD bore the blame for not having a back up QB that was prepared to lead the team and give it a good shot at winning the game. Simms was no where near ready to go in against Wash ….. given a whole week to prepare he was still no where ready to play against SD. McD might be a rookie head coach, but he is no virgin in the NFL. He has been around enough tallent to know everyone gets hurt and what you do in practice is not an indicater of what you will do on game day. I trust that Simms did everything he could do since the first day of training camp to be ready when called on – the fact of the matter is that he is unable to play at this level.
Wow, theres a thought
Simms is not and will not be ready. What has he been doing?
He is over paid, top tier for backups, and we can not trust in him.
That is on McD.
We dispreratly need a back up QB with which we can winnnnn! (5)

blame is ok
maybe I wanted to stress more is that I’m not a Coach and don’t see what the Coach sees daily, weekly, behind closed doors.
I’m not gonna doubt Simms played like dook, yet what if it was too much scheme and system crammed into his head in one week. I trust the Coach and hold judgement until I see bad decisions in a pattern.

What are the odds that McD suits up and plays QB if Orton goes down? He used to play QB.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

el_Don, I've been pushing for Brandstater reps since the season started.
Unfortunately, outside of very curious circumstances, I don’t think we’ll see it. Simms had a lot of tallent, but he is playing for a paycheck now and nothing more. His lack of prep is obvious in his two outings. Brandstater just might be a special tallent, I know as a Boise State fan he was one of only a few QB’s that remained composed, each time I saw him, reguardless of what the Broncos threw at him.
I would love to see Brandstater play, I think we have something special.

Mike, we are in sinc
The Bronco’s are in serious risk here if KO can’t play. Now I realy prefer TB get his reps when we lead by a bunch, instead of like the NE/NO blowout. But in either case, PUT THE DUDE IN and lets see if he and progress beyond the minimal level of C Simms!!!

The Object of Our Attention
.
Click here for YouTube video highlights of Tom Brandstater during the 2007 season at Fresno State
How does he look to you? Granted, he’s playing against lower division college players, and the pro game goes a lot faster than he’s used to.
But I like why I see. Brandstater is a guy who flashes potential.
Totally loved the TD run
He showed great awareness in how he waited for the reciever to set up the block, then when he doubled back so the same receiver could once again make the block to get him in the end zone. Maybe he should be rotating with KM. His passing? Well def some things to like, but the defenses seemed so soft that it is hard to project how this translates to the pro game.
Was that the old Mike Vick from Atlanta?
I could have sworn it was him, the way he was juking and cutting, except that he is white.
Anyways, what struck me most about this video was his ability to put the ball on a dime on that deep route down the sidelines. He was on the left hash and threw it about 40 yards downfield to the right sidelines and dropped the ball right over the defenders’ head.
I also loved how he extended plays by rolling out while keeping his eyes up the field. He reminded me of a faster Ben Roethlisberger, in that regard. He’s smaller, but he can feel pressure and escape, while still looking up the field for an open man. He isn’t afraid to roll to his left, either, which I like.
I can’t wait for him to learn this system. He may be a special player in a few years.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
I actually disagree with this
I think it is Simms who should get the extra reps if they are available. At least for this season. I don’t think you can take what Brandstater did in preseason game 4 and have it translate in any real way to the speed of the regular season in December. Simms may be totally lost mentally right now, but he has the physical ability and study to overcome that- I believe better than Brandstater would at this stage. If Orton goes down (why are we even puting that idea out into the universe?) we have the best chance to win with Simms and running the ball 70% of the time and passing only 30%. Also, Harris is back and I think he would offer better protection for Simms’ blind-side than what we saw Simms get previously. Simms blind-side protection lead to his poor performance as much as anything and that is why McD put Orton in, because his blind-side was better protected by Clady.

Harris would help a lot
and maybe against KC he can provide the five or six minutes Chris will need to read the defense and react, but I would not expect that against Oakland, Indy or even the Eagles. Does Chris have the physical skills? I would say yes, so did that guy we shipped north. This is a mental game first and foremost – I fear Chris has been away too long and has other ghosts wandering the halls of his mind. Would I love to be totally wrong … you betcha! I like the guy, like his story, love his athletic ability. Chris had a ligitimate shot. After the entire offseason, all of preseason and seven games into the regular season he was unable to prepare himself mentally to come into the game. That rookie third string QB in Pittsburg showed 10 times the moxey with little to no notice he was going to be the starter.
No More Simms
Simms is not a legit #2 for any NFL team, let alone a playoff contender. PIttsburgh’s #3 is better than our #2. I’m all for giving the kid reps.
Dennis Dixon did show some flashes didn't he?
At least, that was until the untimely game losing interception…

I wondered why Simms was signed in the 1st place being left-handed.
Harris at RT was probably the reason. I have never been a fan of Simms but he looks like the more prepared of the 2 backups at this point. If Orton stays healthy, he likely has seen his last of pro ball. However, your idea of putting Tom B in in a couple of blowouts makes perfect sense.
This Simms hate is beyond me.
Something people seem to be forgetting when they try to dethrone Simms is the sort of offense he’s supposed to command. It’s ludicrous the sort of expectations we’re throwing on him. We’re expecting him to execute perfectly in a system that supposedly takes years to master, with a cast of players around him that he’s largely unfamiliar with (in game-time), and, what, one game worth of regular season reps. It’s truly baffling.
And it’s coming from people that claim to be aware of Orton’s development. Have we learned nothing this season? Am I the only one that has a feeling of deja vu here? Didn’t Orton have the same problems in his first game (or two… or three… or…)? If I remember correctly, he had happy feet, the O-line struggled, and he kept missing the receivers.
But I figured it would take some time (and so did some of you), because he needed to get used to his new surroundings, and sure enough, he eventually started executing.
You guys should consider this before you toss him in front of a speeding bus. I’m not saying he’ll play as well as Orton, but you should at least give him some time before deeming him “worse than a #3 QB”. (Is Pittsburg’s offense as complicated as the Broncos?)
I have no idea what McX is thinking, but I wouldn’t be too surprised if Simms isn’t cut after this season. In fact, I say he won’t be cut, unless a truly better QB replaces him (i.e. fits the system better than Simms does), as Simms will have a year in the system under his belt, or Brandstater improves drastically to take the #2 spot.
(I could be wrong, but I’m still going to stick with it.)
(For the record, I’m not saying I haven’t been disappointed with his performance… but the greater jolt to me wasn’t his play, but his reaction to it. It wasn’t the way a leader – like Orton – reacted… and actually reminded me of how Cutler would react to bad games; mentally imploding as the mistakes kept coming.)

I also think McDaniels is pretty fair
I remember the team trying out punters weeks before Kern was cut. Kern also had to be aware before hand that he wasn’t getting the job done to what the coach wanted.
I remember KO’s preseason performance and all the uproar over that single performance.
McDaniels seems to give the players a fair shot and a few chances before making any drastic decisions.

Another garbage time opportunity will be Indy
We just need to get blown out quickly, as we customarily do at Indy. Sorry, could not help myself.
I don’t think Tom B gets in this year at all. el_DON may have demoted Simms, but we haven’t heard anything about McD doing the same.
Give Simms One More Chance
See what he does with it.
Ryan Harris not protecting his blind side might have had something to do with his dismal performance.
