Another Disappointing Loss
What a Heartache. This was a game the Broncos were supposed to win, but situational football was played today and that was the difference in the game. Did Mario Haggan hand the Raiders this game with that defensive Holding penalty near the end? Not entirely.
The Raiders held Denver to 80 yards rushing (a paltry 2.9 avg.) and ran the ball 34 times for 241 yards, a devastating 7.1 average. They also bested them (barely) in 3rd Down play. Doom got shutout sacking the QB. That had an effect even though the Defense did pressure Charlie Frye. The Raiders had a better day in the Screen game. They made them work and disrupted the Broncos Screen attempts.
Kyle could have been protected better. He was sacked 3 times. Tyler Polumbus had time to pick up that fumble, since he wasn't blocking Matt Shaughnessy anyway.
I want to know who had Josh McDaniels back on that replay challenge? Isn't there an Assistant "Eye in the Sky?"
Throwing deep to the middle of the field to get in FG position with no Timeouts left and no time to get the FG unit on to the field was puzzling, but the momentum and the game were lost at that point.
However, there were some timely plays made by some Rookies.
David Bruton looked good with a pass deflected in the End Zone and stoppinng McFadden on 4th and Goal.
Tony Carter solidified a place with his play, a couple of good passes defensed, a ST tackle and a Fumble recovery.
How about Kenny McKinley? He made an incredible shoelace tackle on Johnny Lee Higgins punt return after Berger made a critical long punt out of his own end zone. He also had a nice punt return of his own the next series, getting the ball out near the 20 instead of calling for a fair catch at the 5 yard line.
Alphonso Smith had a good pass defense, and Darrell Reid decided he'd seen enough of JaMarcus the Hutt, and required Oakland to send out JP Losman.
So it appears that a few Rookies stepped up this afternoon and made a statement. It is good to see them hungry. That is pretty gratifying to see.
Where was the Rush Defense?
Andra Davis got caught inside on the long run by Bush, then he missed McFadden on the very next play. He must have got pretty fired up at that point, because he came alive and single-handedly got the momentum back for the Broncos. He stopped Bush short on 3rd and Goal. Then, when Mario Haggan forced McFadden to turn his run to the inside on 4th and Goal, he got an assist on Brutons tackle, preventing the raiders from scoring. And on the next series, Andra knocked Charlie Frye's bell loose.
After gaining the lead, the Broncos didn't need to blitz at all to get to the QB. They were actually very generous, even inviting JP Losman to share the pain.
Chris Kuper picked a Raider off and threw him down Rodeo style, when there was a pile up and a Bronco was at the bottom of it.
I think Tony Scheffler had a legitimate Beef when he was interfered with in the End zone and it wasn't called.
They didn't give up and they didn't quite play for 60 minutes, but did the Broncos get trapped in this game?

Davis hit on Frye was a great play
The Denver run defense was pathetic all game, but the hit by Andra Davis was great
for the rivalry with the Raiders.
I thought the pass to Scheffler was a good call by McDaniels, but the Raiders played good pass defense.
I really did not like McD’s trick play on the first drive that back fired. At some point
McDaniels needs to get the red zone conversion rate going. One has to wonder if
Shanahan would have been able to win this one with better plays in the red zone.
The Broncos have really got a tough game next week in Philadelphia. Hopefully,
Dawkins, and the Bronco run defense can step up.
I don't feel like looking on any of the bright side
We gave that game away by being outphysicalled. And I don’t care what anyone says, Moreno can’t make a yard when we need it, and it would not hurt to let Hillis try.
I hear ya
I had a nice cheery post for the win, but that got thrown out the window. No sense wasting the writing time even though I am as upset as you. This and the Washington game have hurt quite a bit. The wins against the Patriots and Giants may cancel the Redskin game out, but losing to the team I abhor the most just takes the wind from my sails.

Only one thing to say....WE SUCKED...Good bye Play offs!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????

So, we are still one game up in the wildcard. What about that says no playoffs to you? 2 wins and we are in.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Really....
We could lose to Philly, beat KC and still have a good shot at the playoffs…..I don’t get the talk about us not having a shot at the playoffs.
That's true. I'd rather have us win out and get in with 2 more wins, but one win and help works too.
Just as long as we are in.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

No, it would not be a losing season
But I wouldn’t consider it a winning one either. I didn’t mean to confuse, but that is still an optional result.

Is the season over?
Last I checked we still control our playoff fate, and even a loss to Philly doesn’t knock us out. This is a team that has lots of young players, and is in the first year after a huge overhaul. This was a frustrating loss, but I like where we’re headed, and would love to see us make the playoffs for experience if nothing else.
I kind of agree w/Boydy...
1. Where is Hillis? NO…he’s not the answer, but he offers value!
2. Why throw to Lamont Jordan, he’s not Hillis!
3. When did our O line enter the witness protection program?
4. When will McD stop believing Moreno can run thru walls?
5. Why won’t McD stretch field as we did in Washington? It worked!!!
6. When will bloggers STOP saying McD should be fired?!!!!!!!
Go Broncos! I’m very dissappointed but I’m on board!!!!

I'm with ya
I’m on board too. I’m tired of asking for Hillis. Something is unexplained as to why he is not playing. I don’t care what anyone thinks, Hillis is much harder to bring down than any other back we have out there. More runs over Clady’s side would make sense to me. You have to go with your strengths and he is it on the O Line.

Exactly, Kirk...
Hillis may not win games automatically, but you’re telling me he can’t run and catch better than Jordan? REALLY? or that he can’t get a short yard or two better than Moreno? I just don’t buy it.
OK, so what are you on board with?
Unimaginative offensive play-calling that reduces the risk of making mistakes but guarantees ineffectiveness in the red zone? Orton sliding into a sack because it’s a “great game management” move? Moreno running to the right and getting blown up at the line of scrimmage time after time? I don’t understand why we continue to do the same things over and over – screen plays that don’t work for example. We have weapons – Marshall, Royal, Hillis, Scheffler and we continually under-utilize them. I really don’t understand the love affair with Moreno. Can’t we try something different?

Amen!
I’m afraid our coach has some serious things to wake up to. His schemes & plans don’t really fit the team he has, like trying to force a square peg through a round hole…ala Moreno up the middle, Moreno up the middle, Moreno up the middle??? The team is 8-6, but if you look at the success of McDaniels’ system this year it reads more like 8-8. Lots of room to grow there, too much room to be a contender this year. Is it me or does Orton seem wobbly all the time, I mean even when he’s running off the field, not a solid looking lad. I must agree with nearly every Bronco fan I know in saying that at this point in the season nothing is more bewildering than the Hillis question! C’mon man! Lamont Jordan?! Just let the kid run the ball sometime, that pass in the flats was made for him. I suspect McD just doesn’t like Hillis for personality reasons, or something…VERY strange.

playoffs are not over but I think we need to wrap our heads around the fact that Hillis is not going to play .The coach doesnt like him and thats that.
McD wants to be a power team but we are not but also lets not forget the O-coordinator comes from a power ball control running offense in Carolina as well. So any experienced advice McD may get from his offensive coaching staff will fall into a power style of play as well.
Our line has been wow terrible at times and we have really aged up the middle fast .
Going all the way back to the Giants game last month Orton and Brandon have been the dynamic duo offensively but yet we tend to go away from them much too often when they have been consistently the best players on offense . But they are also due to get paid and I get the feeling that McD doesnt want to make them too big of a focal point of his offense in case they dont return .
What happened to MHR radio?
did it disappear like our rush offense and rush defense?
Either Moreno needs to gain 30 lbs...
… or Hillis needs to apologize for killing McDaniels dog… or whatever horrible thing he did to McD
I have us at 8-8 right now, we can't seal the deal.
The game that was supposed to not be a TRAP game came down very nicely upon their own throats…In front of their own fans too…That’s embarrassing don’t you think. We just need to pack in and be thankful we didn’t have a losing season. Maybe next year folks!
some missed calls by the refs
plus our O-line disintigrated under pressure. Maybe they are having a hard time trying to move away from the zone blocking scheme that has been the staple. They are just getting over powered.
I love our new D but I am tired of seeing broken arm tackles and bad angles by our linebackers. Bring in some guys that know how to tackle! I am having deja vu from last years end of season debacle but I still think this team is made of better stuff than last year considering we installed a totally new offense, defense and overhauled half the roster. We just aren’t executing. And yes I don’t understand the playcalling at times either. I hope McD can bring in the players next year that will make this system more complete.
Missed calls is an understatement.
The grab on Schef was worser than the one on Goodman. Good just flew by him to the ball and his hand touched the players helmet. Had nothing to do with whether the guy could have made the catch. Fixed game.
don't forget
third down where Gaffney was pushed and just run over by the DB, all the while grabbing at his jersey. But it was OK because he was “looking for the ball”, so you can mess with the receiver if you look for the ball. I just cannot see how they let two similar plays go by the Raiders D and at a critical time drop a call that just shouldn’t have been made. IMO the Scheffy one was borderline, I was fine with a no-call but no way Gaffney’s call gets by if you are calling Goodman for that.

My question is...
…why didn’t they show the replay of the Haggan’s defensive holding? Every other penalty had at least one replay. Yet the penalty at the end of the game, which gives the raiders a new set of goal to go downs, no replay. If Haggan did commit that penalty, fine, but let us see it at least. There is only 1 reason I can think of for why they did not show that replay and that would be because it was a bogus call.

How could Hillis be so dominating last year in his 2 1/2 games -
and this year not get any PT? It makes no sense. He at least deserves a chance to play. Clearly the rotation was not working today. Moreno is much more effective with another back in a rotation. Buck is an excellent back and his absense certainly hurts.
I realize that the schemes are different for our running game this year. I guess that I don’t quite understand – like the other comments above.
I hated to bring up Hillis in my earlier buffet of questions...BUT
I don’t believe Hillis is THE answer, but I do think he creates some mismatches in our favor. His absence has become so conspicuous, that it has become almost arrogant. I wish Josh would just tell us why Hillis was a blossoming star, as a 7th round steal last year, but this year he’s persona non gratis! I’m just asking?
I don’t care if we had Barry Sanders/Walter Payton in our backfield, the way our O Line’s blocking, they wouldn’t do much better….it’s really sad to see our line seemingly fall apart and get beat up by Ravens/Steelers/Redskins/Raiders…. We need more “beef”, actually guys the size of Montrae Holland are the size of OG’s we need in McD’s offense?
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
You could be right about Hillis
I would like to be proved wrong though. Show me.

I've noticed that we haven't been using many 2 back sets
most of them seem to be single back sets. Is this a stapled feature of our new system? Is that why Hillis isn’t seeing much time? Maybe in practice he hasn’t been performing well out of that set. Who knows…just speculation

It's a good thing some rookies played well on the FIELD, because...
Our rookie on the sideline was out of touch today. I’m not quite sure what he was thinking most of the game.
The play calling was very suspect. At this point, I’m flat out sick of not seeing Peyton Hillis. There was no running game to speak of against the RAIDERS. How pathetic is that?
Due to this, I am officially on the Mike Iupati bandwagon for our first round pick. I am sick of not being able to run the ball. Sure, not having Buck hurts, but man…Knowshon hits the hole like a scared doofus sometimes. Then again, Tyler Polumbus blocks as such at times as well.
QB sneak on 2nd and 4 potentially cost us a TD. Wait, it did. Then we run a HB draw? Are you kidding me?
Then the TE fade route on third and goal on our potential game ending drive after Stokley’s HUGE play. I don’t care if Scheffler catches the ball, gets interfered with, or any of the above, you throw the fade on first or second down, and not third. If you throw it on third, you sure as heck better GO FOR IT on fourth down.
Kicking the field goal on that drive was a horrid call. You figure, you go for it on fourth one of a few things will happen:
1. You score a touchdown, game over
2. You miss and pin them 98 yards away from the end zone with Jabba at QB
3. You miss and only up three, the Raiders DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT go for it on fourth down. They kick a game-tying field goal, and you have two minutes to score again.
This loss is absolutely unacceptable, and it falls on Mcdaniels. Not pleased with our output yesterday at all.
"Kicking the field goal on that drive was a horrid call".
You are absolutely right and I couldn’t understand how a 6 point lead makes you feel better than 3. Jabba the Hutt would have been playing out of the endzone. Our defense seems to do better down there and would of held them I am sure. Cables was slobbering all over hisself when Josh kicked the field goal. Coaching error.
