2000s the Second Worst Decade in Broncos History?

These are the sorts of posts that happen when boredom meets depression meets reflection meets nostalgia.

Star-divide

The Raider loss obviously left a very sour taste in my mouth. I am convinced the Broncos will again miss the playoffs, which continues this decade’s trend of fast starts and painful endings. That’s the depression. Then I was sitting around bored (awaiting the next snowstorm here in the Mile High City) and reflecting on this past decade. Because we’ve had no new great memories since 1998, I’ve been pining for the glory days and becoming more and more bitter as my waist line widens and the Broncos tease my heart with their yearly cardiac roller coaster.

Anyway, it got me thinking about where the 2000s rate in terms of Broncos history (I guess all this 50 year anniversary marketing is finally getting to me too). In my heart it feels like the worse decade in Broncos history. I am almost 30 (born in 1980) and grew up when John Elway made the Broncos one of the great franchises for the better part of two decades. But after crunching some numbers and forcing myself to remember that life existed before I did and that the 1970s and 1960s should also count, here is what I came up with.

Obviously the 1960s was the worst decade.  We played 140 games and only won 39, that means we won 27 percent of our games and didn’t so much as sniff the playoffs.

Obviously the best decade was the 1990s. We won two Super Bowls and appeared in the playoffs three other times. In 1991 we got as far as the AFC Championship game. We won 58 percent of our games and experienced three losing seasons.  But is it obviously the best?

The 1980s are close and only play Robin to the 1990s Batman because of the Super Bowl wins. But in this decade we won 61 percent of our games, made two playoff appearances without getting past the first round and made the Super Bowl three times. Obviously we got spanked in those Super Bowls, so that actually brings a lot of pain to an otherwise very successful decade.

It gets interesting when you want to rank which is the second worse decade for the Broncos.

The 1970s started off rough because we continued our ways from the 1960s into the early part of the decade. But we finished off strong. We won 52 percent of our games overall and made three playoff appearances the final three years, which includes that notorious 1977 team that made it to the Super Bowl. Based on how the decade started and ended, I would say that this decade turned out pretty well: we did make it to the Super Bowl and had one of the most colorful and storied defenses in the history of the NFL.

That brings us to the not-yet-completed 2000s. But, as I said at the beginning, I have no faith in the rest of the year/decade/whatever and am looking toward next year and next decade. This decade we made four playoff appearances, three of which ended in wildcard blowouts and one ended in a blowout against Pittsburgh in the AFC Championship game. Of course, 2005 ended very painfully because we ended up with home field for that game and came out flat – something that became an annoying trend in the 2000s. To me, winning 58 percent of our games is moot and only intensifies the pain we experienced this decade. Another point is that Bronco mania took a huge hit (something that was born, lived and thrived in the 1970s). Home games aren’t the same at Corporate Field at Cop Out Attempt to Keep Mile High in the Name stadium. Home field advantage seems to no longer exist, and –  as recent games against the Steelers show –  more and more non-Broncos fans are infesting our corporately named home.

In the 1970s the expectations weren’t what they were in the 2000s, so that matters in terms of how we perceive success. And, granted I wasn’t around in the 1970s, I believe the 2000s is worse because of how many times we got blown out and lost big games when it mattered most. Many of those “playoff” teams were complete frauds, or at least as overmatched as the final scores indicate.

I hope I am wrong and I hope there is time in this season to redeem what has been, in my opinion, the second worse decade in Broncos history. Furthermore, I know this sounds a bit spoiled because I am sure A LOT of franchises would love to boast these accomplishments and would LOVE to complain about what we’ve experienced in the 2000s – San Diego comes to mind because up until the last five or so years they’ve essentially been the 1960s Broncos with some small glimpses of what we accomplished in the 1970s. Suck it dolts!

Feel free to bring any angle to this discussion you would like. This is an opportunity to talk about this decade and how it compares to the other four in our history. I would also love to read any ideas favoring the 1980s to the 1990s.

Here is a brief history I looked at when crunching these numbers and making my conclusions.

Cheers

Umm

Denver went to the AFC title game in 2005. Thats past the first round. The went to the playoffs in 2000, 2003, 2004, and 2005. This year isnt complete so we might be able to add 2009 also

I voted '70s, but its all relative you know.

The Broncos were competitive throughout this decade. Maybe not in the playoffs, save one game against the Patriots, but we have been in the thick of things each and every year. The worst season was 7-9.

I think the Broncos were pretty good in the 70s too…it takes a lot to turn around a franchise after over a decade of destitution.

I’m not complaining…at least we aren’t Chiefs fans. Hell, at least we aren’t Charger fans! We have 6 Super Bowl appearances and two titles and only two or three seasons of 10+ losses in the last 35 years!

I am grateful that I was lucky enough to fall in love for a team that is such a perennial winner.

I agree

about this decade. I think that the 70’s were better because we got to a SB, and we didn’t have the QB talent that decade that we had in this decade. Plummer and Cutler were better than any QB that Denver had in the 70’s, including Morton, but couldn’t get them to a SB like Craig did. And, the 77 Broncos beat better teams to get to the SB than the 00’s Steelers, Colts, Pats, and Chargers. The 70’s Steelers were the best team of all-time, the Raiders were pretty tough, and in my opinion, the 77 Cowboys were better than any team that won it this decade. I think that they were better than the 90’s Cowboy teams as well.

The 70's were worse, and I lived through them

Yes we went to the SB, but the first half of the decade was pretty rough for Broncos fans. Overall this decade may not have brought us a SB (yet), but the Broncos overall have been a decent team. They’ve been a middle of the pack team the last couple of years. But, having only one loosing year in ten is pretty tough to do in the NFL. There were four loosing years in the 70’s, albeit they were at the first part of the decade.

Now let’s go focus on the Iggles and get us another one in the win column.

Vincerelli, I liked your post because it's something interesting and a different take

Good job. My worst moment was Jacksonville 1996, followed closely by the SB blowouts, but I was very young during those games.

The angriest I’ve ever been was probably when Shanny replaced Plummer with Cutler. I thought Plummer was the perfect QB for this City. Apparently, from recent interviews, Rod Smith agreed.

Thanks brother! :-)

I’d have to agree with the Jacksonville game because it sure felt like that year was our year. But luckily for us we only had to wait one more year.

For me the worse game I’ve experienced was the 2005 AFC Championship game. As I’ve posted before, I think was our year. The Colts pummeled us the two prior years and they were out of it. We had the homefield. We just beat the Patriots. Everything was lining up so beautifully. And we come out flat. Champ Baily just misses an interception at the beginning of the game that would’ve gone house and probably changed the way the game ended up. We lost our chance to get the momentum and Pitts, instead, went on to score.

People always talk about Jacksonville, and I agree that hurt. But we won two SBs in a row after that. Killed Jacks the year after. It’s that 2005 AFCC game that kills me. Well, that and last week to Oakland. ;-)

And TJ, I am 100 percent with ya on Jake Plummer. He felt like a Bronco to me and he was OUR guy. People wanted to talk about how trading Cutler set us back (obviously that’s b.s.), but I think that started with Culter.

Dan, vince, I can see I am not the only one that talks about that Bailey-almost INT

I talk about it a lot when discussing 2005. He makes that pick and we go on to beat Seattle I think.

And guess what, right now, we are talking about Jake Plummer and his legacy compared to John Elway. He would still be the QB right now, in my opinion.

And Bailey had that pick man. He freakin’ had it! People forget that play, but I am glad someone else remembers.

Yeah

Not many people mention it — probably because the final score doesn’t make it look like one play would’ve made a difference. But I am wish you: that non-pick was the difference between us winning it all and not even advancing to the big dance.

I was at that game sitting high in the north stands (in the horse seats). I saw Baily jump that route, have the ball for a second, and I remember looking south where there was nothing but beautiful green loveliness in front of him. Then I look down wondering where Baily was and he’s slamming his fists into his hands because he just missed it.

Arg!

The proof is in the pudding

The 70’s – 52% winning percentage and 3 trips to the playoffs.
The 2000’s – 58% winning percentage and 4 trips to the playoffs with a decent shot at trip #5 this year.

And you’re arguing this decade was worse than the ’70’s? We had more wins and more trips to the playoffs in this decade than the ’70’s. Enough said.

Let's see how that goes in 30 years

But, based on my post above, I won’t be a good source to answer that question. :-(

I think you're onto something...

I think the one of the reasons that I’ve morphed into a rah-rah kool aid type this year is that despite the relatively respectable record this decade, it has felt like the heart and character of this team slowly melted away during the Shanahan tenure. In McD I’ve seen a remarkable reversal in culture. While I will always love the Broncos, I can’t say that I liked them much this decade, especially the last 3 years. Save 2005, they were too finesse, and too easy to fold under the slightest adversity. And while the end result might ultimately be disappointing again this year; and while the team has played poorly at times of late, I haven’t sensed a lack of effort or heart that seemed to becoming the team’s collective identity. I’m as excited and optimistic about the team’s direction as I’ve been in years.

That said, look how good we’ve got it— if this 2nd worst in a 50 year history, there are few more blessed fan bases. It makes you wonder how we could possibly count our meager collection of HoFers on one hand.

Has to be this decade

That one trip to their first Super Bowl ever, after everything suffered up to then, makes up for every loss in the 70’s. That one team is responsible for resetting the bar so high that we’re talking about this decade being “bad”. By Bronco standards, it was bad. Now, if we’re talking about lowering the standard to Chief or Charger or even Raider standards, then the 2000’s were pretty good…….

Now where did that Kool-Aid vendor go?
