How to avoid another let down next season

This isn't a post announcing that i think we are finished because I still think that we will make the playoffs.  This is just an idea of what we should do this coming offseason so that we wont have to pray in order to make the playoffs next year.

I think winning starts with both the offensive and defensive line. We dont have the worst O-line & D-line, but we are not near the best.  There have been many mock drafts that have us taking Rolando McClain in the 1st round.  While he would be great to have, I dont feel he will change anything.  In a 3-4 defense you need to have a big dominant NT in order to free up the linebackers.  While Ronald Fields is O.K he is no ones first choice.  My solution would be to draft Terrence Cody.

At 6-5 260+, we would be crazy to let him slip through our fingers.  Many people point  the finger at Andre Davis saying that he is too old and wore down as the season went on. That may be true, but with this guy in front of him, Im sure he could give us one more season playing at a very high level. If we do go with McClain, I think Denver should move back into the first or early second round and pick Cody.

For our O-line troubles its simple, We have to draft Mike Iupati.

A 6-6 330 guard that would dominate either beside Clady or Harris.  Plug him in and you could 500+ plus yards to our run game.  I watched him dominate in yesterdays game driving his man back at least 10 yard on a couple plays.

If we get these two guys to solidify our O-line & D-line next year would be a lot better.

On another note, in free agency we should only be worrying about our own players. Bring back Marshall, Doom, and Scheffler. Also a return man would be nice, and would also allow Royal to focus on his receiving duties.  Royal has had a bad year but i don't think that it's his fault.  A lot of you may not agree but Kyle Orton is really at fault.  It's great to have a QB that uses his brain but he barely uses his arm.  After our lose to Philly, i had to sit and watch Jay Cutler fling the ball all over the field.  Not saying im still bitter over the Cutler trade, because we got the better out of that deal (team wise), but we took a step back in the QB department. Orton puts up great statistics, but he just cant get the job done.  It may sound crazy but if you look at all the names of the great QB's in the league, Kyle Orton doesn't even sound right.(sorry, had to get that off my chest)

So what do you all think?

o-line first

d-line, lb, wr, cb/saftey. in that order. don’t know enough about who, but that’s the order I’m looking for. gotta say, I’m tired of all this draft talk with one more game to go. I live in San Diego and I know for a fact no one is talkin’ draft. I can’t wait til’ the Broncos season is just starting in January…tired of this bad ball in Dec.
Go Broncos!!

Also,

when I say o-line first, it’s cause I’m hopeing we trade down to top 20, draft talent and get that 2nd second round. That is my premise.

Yea

You cant take a guard that high, even if the guy is a beast. There’s some decent interior Oline guys set to go UFA; and Id steer clear of Cody.

That guy is a bust waiting to happen.

ok dont say how to avoid another letdown

before the season is done. I know we are longshots but i would say there is a 35% chance we make playofs

HILLIS...where are you???

If we had 2 1st round picks, maybe we could select these two. Instead, we have Alphonso Smith, a supposed top 5 nickel CB that makes a lot of Ints.

This is my favorite website.

We definitely need to get BIGGER, but...

1. We need “Skill” players with the 1st round pick. If we needed a LT, top 10 would be great, but not for OG. I watched him too, but Iupati’s blowing up guys that wouldnt even be selected as UFA’s. It’s a total mismatch. Doubt that happens in NFL…you know? There are some other “Monster” OG/C that fit our needs, and you’re right, we have big needs up front to support Clady/Harris. These other OG/C could be had in later rounds also…

2. I like Cody, but drafting him in top 12 might be premature. HE’s big, but doesnt have good footwork. He’s not even a 3 down player at Alabama? My feeling is that Chris Baker is coming along nicely, and will be ready to challenge Fields next year. He’s around 330, so he’s got the size we need. I’ll be watching Cody vs Texas. If he has a great game, his draft stock could soar (like Ndamukong Suh). Dan Williams from Tenn is a beast too, and he could be had in 2nd or low 1st. Much better value?

3. I love McClain as our 1st pick, or Dez Bryant? Maybe even CJ Spiller, even though you can get the “poor man’s” version of Spiller w/ Dexter McCluster (Ole Miss) later in the draft. We’re gonna need a RB to pair w/Moreno. Buck’s injury prone and getting a bit long in the tooth for RB. A guy like Gerhart is attractive, even though he’s a high draft grade version of Hillis. Apparently whatever Hillis did, or didnt do has cost him a roster spot which really bites!

Good post, it’s fun to play draft war games even before we make the playoffs this year….

What is missing...

Heading into next year’s draft I think your analysis is right on just not sure using a high #1 on guard is the wise thing to do when we need players makers who can make the difference in winning. My first thought is to improve the QB position first, a QB who can create fear in the defenses. My 2nd thought is to use our #1 draft pick at WR opposite B.Marshall, and 3rd thought is to draft CB who can start now and handle kickoffs. I think we have to wait and see what players will step up during the combine so we have a better idea who to draft. I believe that the O-line & D-line players we need will be available in round 3 to 5 so no need to waste such high draft picks on players who won’t start for at least 2 years. Bottom line we need to use our #1 pick on a player who could start now, and that would be either WR or CB. Because the draft is deep with talent anyway that is what everyone is saying and if true then we need to be sure we draft a player who can start and QB is not the position unless you are in the top 5 picks. I think rounds 3 to 7 can be used to fine a QB to learn the system over time in lets say 2 to 3 years. Good post it got me to respond nice job…
