Around SBN: Dog Football! Which Breeds Are Best Suited For The Gridiron?

Just got back from the game

Definitely a big win.  But...

Star-divide

It seems like this year we have needed everything to go right.  If it does we win big.  If it doesn't we lose big.  I was nervous going into the game,  just because I have been to many a Dec game at Arrowhead and come away disappointed.  I'll always remember that feeling of hearing the crowd erupt to a Dante Hall kickoff return before I had even made it to my seat.  Having said that, today was great.  A rare treat that I savored fully.  But with a mind to the December troubles, I was on the lookout for mistakes.  I was watching for those few little frays that could unravel the whole sweater.   I haven't done any reading or research, I'm fresh home.  Just wanted to make some observations and see if those of you who watched it on TV and had the stats available could comment and fill me in.  I'm not as learned in the football ways as some on this site, so these will be a bit more general, and maybe wrong.  No guarantees.

-First, that is the emptiest I have ever seen Arrowhead.  KC was down a man all game, the 12th man was mute.  Living in the area  I have been to my share of Chiefs games and Chiefs Fan is usually classy.  I get teased, but in good taste.  After I went to a KC/Oakland game and saw how they treated the Oakland fans I felt like they basically roll out the red carpet for Denver fans.  But I digress.  Crowd was thin, noise was down.  Strange and not what I'm used to at all.

-It seemed like the defense let some guys get open deep.  If it had been a QB and receivers that can actually connect it seemed like those mistakes would have mattered a lot more.

-The running game looked pretty good.  At times it seemed like the KC "D" made Buck look like AP.

-On the same note the protection seemed a little off at times.  It seemed like they protected well most of the time but when it broke down it broke down big.

-The turnovers concerned me, in the context of just wanting to be a better team.  It felt like if we were playing a better team they would have hurt a lot more.  The first interception was very "non-Orton" like and it seemed like he missed B Marsh wide open.  The first "fumble" was a little weird live.  It looked like it was a pass, and "coincidentally" it was the only play the entire day that wasn't replayed at least once on the big screen in the stadium.  Which led me to believe it wasn't really a fumble or they would be showing it.  But I honestly don't know either way.  The second sack/fumble just troubled me more that the "D" was getting that kind of penetration.

-Overall it was a lot of fun.  It was nice to see Denver just open up on someone like that.  Haven't seen that in a while, and to do it in KC in December was icing.

-It looked like B Marsh gave McD the ball after his TD.  If that's the case that's cool.

-I never did find out who was taken into the locker room on the "cart"

-The "D" getting turnovers was nice.  Real nice Clark.  For some reason they seemed more "big time" than some others this year.  Maybe because it was live.

-You have got to love KC BBQ.  That's all I have to say about that.

-The Chiefs players didn't seem as bothered by the loss as the fans were.  They were joking a bit on the sidelines.  I can't pass judgment on any of them, but I was on a really bad team once and we hit a point where we just accept the losing.  If that culture of losing has penetrated the chiefs, that's too bad.  It's the only rivalry in the division that is, for me, healthy and with a team I don't really foster any deep-seeded hatred for, more of a positive rivalry if you will.

That's it for now.  Need to warm up and catch up on the goings on of the rest of the league.

You probably meant Harris.

Ryan Harris left after he aggravated his toe injury today.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Man...

I thought that was him but then I couldn’t quite tell. Hope he comes back soon.

O-line played pretty good

Buck looked like AP because the O-line was dominating. I think they should get some credit and not all blame on a poor KC D-line. The second fumble by Orton was Orton’s fault. When we are backed up to our goal line, you can’t double pump and then expect to actually get a pass off. We only let a guy get behind the DBs on that first drive play…so I think they did fine. Overall it was a good performance. The ST were pretty good….I say “pretty” because we were just darn lucky they didn’t block that punt deep in our end. The coaches had a good game plan…..although I would have liked more blitzes early in the game. When we blitzed, good things happened. In my opinion, that has been true all year. Otherwise, I think you were spot on with your analysis.

Cassel

was so strikingly inaccurate today it was distracting. So that’s probably why I couldn’t quite tell on those coverages. I’ve been a bit of a Cassel defender to Chiefs Fan but today he had a rough day.

Well, you probably could tell better than me...

I can only see what the camera allows me to see, which is rarely the downfield coverage unless the pass actually goes downfield.

Spot on with your comments.

Pass protection was inferior and Orton held the ball too long. Turnovers would have killed us against a competent team. Scheffler’s dropped ball could have been huge as was the interception in the end zone on the first drive. However, they dominated with the running game and timely points off the turnovers. Good win overall. They have to keep getting better to be relevant in January.

Man...I kept reading hoping you would tell us how you went up in the broadcast booth and smacked Fouts.

The guys a fool…

KC’s HC Todd Haley and Wade got into it because he missed the bomb early in the game. McDaniels play plan seemed to dictate run until the couldn’t and it was successful for the most part. Still, Orton made mistakes where if we were playing a tough team would have been devastating. I wish they would get over making those stupid errors. The defense struggled of KC’s first drive and then took over the game. 10 of KC’s points came off of turnovers, so I would say they did what they were supposed to do. Go job all around except for the TO’s.

“marshall was playing possum because he was injured”

or… they called a run play with no wideouts

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

How did Hillis look to you?

I thought he looked like a monster myself. Three headed monster?

by SpeakEasy on Dec 6, 2009 6:32 PM MST reply actions

yeah

I love the way he runs. I don’t know enough to make an intelligent assessment, but from a fan’s perspective I’d rather have him at 3 on the chart than Jordan. Even though I haven’t seen everything, it seems like he finishes harder.

by jayhawk bronco on Dec 6, 2009 6:58 PM MST up reply actions

Small sample for Hillis, but

with what Jordan has shown, I think that Hillis is really the right #3 back to have. Maybe we can work up some sets where he might usually be used as a blocker but can take the ball himself on occasion (when we are in short yardage, big package, of course)

by idahobronc on Dec 6, 2009 7:45 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah--

He is a fullback/halfback hybrid. I’m not sure who the better blocker is, but I’d really want to replace Spencer Larsen at fullback with Hillis just to have him on the field more often. I mean, Spencer Larsen is a linebacker, and a pretty good one at that. As a fullback he really gives no threat to the defense of breaking off big gains like Hillis would no matter how good he is as a blocker.

I actually hope is the #2 (let the jokes begin) back next year

I didn’t really notice it, but it until today, but Moreno and Buck are similar runners. I love what Buck has done, but hopefully a full year of conditioning and Moreno can realize his potential next year. It seems a better idea to have one back like Moreno/Buck and a bruiser like Hillis….but I have a man-crush on Hillis so I’m probably bias.

I definitely agree....

because of injuries. However, it seems that McD basically plays 2 backs and then the 3rd only comes in for mop up duty. I’d like to see Hillis up to #2 so he gets more meaningful playing time. Hopefully he achieves that for next season. It seems we struggle with physical teams like Ravens and Steelers, and have for years, a smash mouth running back willing to play their style would be a great benefit.

Congrats guys

I’ve never seen that many dropped balls, but no excuses, kudos to a dominate performance.

"The way this works is you string together some good games, some good practices and you get momentum and you gain confidence," linebacker Mike Vrabel said. "It can be a real positive for your team. It builds on itself."

thanks man, tough game out there, but the future is bright for this side of the afc west.

The pass protection concerns me considering that we’ve got Manning up next on the schedule. He’s not going to miss those open WRs. It’s hard to game plan for the Colts because they make you pay if you blitz and pay if you don’t. We’re going to need a flawless game. In other words, no turnovers and no blown coverages.

"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!
