Secondary
How has your secondary progressed so far. If I can recall correctly, two rookies are starting. What do you attribute their success to? Is it coaching, scheme, something else.
"Pleased? We are excited about the proposition of going forward from where we are right now. Pleased? I don't know if you want to say pleased. You may want to hang your hat on pleased. I don't want to hang my hat on nothing right now."
-Brian Dawkins, on the play of the defense
Once he gets his hands on you, there's not much you're going to do. Then you can't outrun him, you can't run around him, you can't really run him over -- so you've just got to deal with it."
Elvis Dumerville, on Ryan Clady
Lacey might get moved back to the nickel this week
Kelvin Hayden was back from a knee injury that cost him a few weeks, but played limited snaps. He looked fine so he’ll probably be back in the starting lineup now that he’ll have had 2 weeks of practice and a game to get back up to speed.
But Jerruad Powers and Jacob Lacey have been great. CBs don’t put up the stats for it, but he should be a DROY candidate. He’s been starting since week 1 and has spent extended periods as the teams top corner on a elite pass D. Lacey has been a solid #2, great nickelback as an undrafted rookie. Obviously both have been somewhat protected by the help they get deep in a Tampa-2, but the Colts mix it up more under the new DC and left the CBs on their own sometimes where they’ve held up just fine.
So some scheme, along with great scouting and coaching.

When will Peyton Manning be banned for life from the NFL?
He’s obviously a robot. There should be a rule in the NFL rulebook that outlaws non-humans from playing the game.
Sorry. I just had to get that out of my system. Now, on to a serious question. Can your defense stop our running game? The Miami Dolphins put up ridiculous yardage on the ground against you guys and we have shown that we can run with the same kind of effectiveness.
Obviously, you guys like your chances on offense, having Peyton Manning and all. However, where do you think the colts offense can succeed against the broncos defense? Do you see any glaring holes that the colts will try to attack?
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
Girl, you don't need to be a 10, as long as you have a good smile and smell like bacon.
to how our defense will hold up to your run game
id say i think it will hold up great. take a look at what we have done since that miami game. we have done good on run D and even last week we allowed CJ to get his 100 yards but didn’t let him get any big gains. so were able to render him less effective the biggest gain he had was one for 11 yards. so i feel pretty good about that.
i dont know your defense very well but know you did have very good corners but are they still shut down?? id say we will take advantage up the middle with clark and id say that i see us getting a few plays over the top for 20+ with one of our three threats there collie, wayne, or garcon who is really becoming a consistent threat.

the run D doesn't give up big plays, but you can grind out yardage on them
on O I think the issue is covering all the weapons. I don’t think there’s a D out there that can cover Wayne, Clark, Addai, Garçon and Collie while getting any pressure on Peyton.
Clark is a matchup nightmare. Wayne demands a double team, Garçon is deep threat on the other side, Collie and Addai are sure handed and find holes in the coverage very well in the short passing game and the WRs block well opening up big lanes if teams just put DBs on everyone.

Welcome !
How has your special teams been preforming latley ?
I was hoping our returner eddie royal mabey could get a game changeing TD on a punt or kickoff return !
I think we will Really need a TD In this area to win .
Do you see a chance of this happening sunday ?

STs have been the best I’ve ever seen from Indy. The coverage teams especially. I don’t cringe on kickoffs and punts anymore.
The Broncos are a good team, they certainly could win, but the Colts will be favored for a reason.

Time may be right?
Since their bye, except St Louis, the Colts have played on the brink. No blowouts
because each of the six teams have good defenses. Now they get a hybrid to contend
with in the Denver Broncos. Just food for thought.
Nov 1 San Francisco Won 18-14
Nov 8 Houston Won 20-17
Nov 15 New England Won 35-34
Nov 22 @Baltimore Won 17-15
Nov 29 @Houston Won 35-27
Dec 6 Tennessee Won 27-17
Houston and Tennessee got garbage time TDs in the last minute though
those weren’t as close as the final.

Hi Angel, kinda a tradition here, we occasionally ask questions (and expect answers) in lymeric....so here goes...
Your Manning has owned us for years,
Results that near brought me to tears,
We’d show all our might,
Yet still lose the fight,
Our winning stat now in arrears.
So Angel, my question to you,
You must know these Broncos are new,
As one they have might,
They stop not their fight,
Can Doom leave Peyt. black and blue?
OK Angel, now answer me with a lymeric

As you are aware !
This is not the same broncos defense the colts kicked
around over the last few years. Has the local sports media
(sports talk radio .. TV …Or the average indy fans ) been
talking respect or does everybody think that this will be
another colts Peyton manning Butt kicking of the broncos
Please !… Be honest .. Not just polite.. LOL

I haven't listened to anything on the Broncos yet
It’s been mostly about the Titans game, but my guess is after two straight divisional games, the media folks will kind of overlook you guys even if you are 8-4. The lack of hate for you guys from the Colts will make it more calm.

Too early for the local media
to start talking about the Broncos. They’re still writing stories about the Titans game and the 21 game winning streak.
But if I had to take a guess, I would have to assume that the local media expects it to be another Peyton Manning butt kicking. I can’t be sure of that though.

Just two questions:
1. Where is Big BS?
2. Are you guys emotionally prepared for loss number one? It’s always the hardest. I recommend thinking back to the pre-Manning era to help ease the pain.
"C" is for Championship...that's good enough for meeeee!!!
I'm not mentally prepared for loss #1
And I refuse to prepare myself. I’ll just enjoy it right now and face the disappointment later this month.

OK.
1. No clue. BBS has weird schedules at times with his posts, and he also tends to prefer other people commenting over him. Go figure.
2. Nope. I prepared myself for possible losses pregame only 2 times this season (@ Arizona and @ Houston). I will not do so again unless we rest our starters at some time. I would rather sit back and enjoy this basically once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Are ya'll expecting to get anthony gonzalez back?
that being said, do ya’ll think he would even be an improvement upon the surprising collie and garcon?
Gonzalez won't be back
And I don’t think he would be an improvement over Pierre, but I think he is better than Collie. He will help when he gets back, but that won’t be in a while.

i say he will be back but probably not till the last or second to last game :(

word I've heard is next week-ish
I think he’ll be a big addition to the offense. Garçon has earned a spot in the starting lineup, but Collie, Santi and Gijon haven’t really laid claim to the last starting spot, so Gonzo will take it when he gets back.
I’m expecting Garçon and Gonzalez on the outside with Reggie in the slot (they did that a lot last year to accommodate Gonzo and Marvin both being better on the outside than in the slot).

Defending against Peyton
First of all, welcome to MHR and thanks for your time.
Brian Urlacher was in the news recently, as he was interviewed on a variety of topics ranging from his thoughts on the Bears season, to how his team has changed since McJaygate. He was also asked about Peyton Manning and if he could explain their most recent success against the Colts after the SB matchup. His response:
We beat them up [29-13] in last year’s opener, and what we did was we showed blitz every single snap, no matter what defense we were going to play. … I wish we’d been able to do something to stop him in the Super Bowl [a 29-17 Colts victory in February of ’07]. He killed us.
In your opinion, is this an effective way for a defense to scheme against Peyton this year? Has anyone done it, from what you guys could notice?
"All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses." Friedrich Nietzsche
best D I've seen played on Peyton all year was by the Niners
they refused to show their alignment until under 10 seconds were on the clock and just had the front 7 milling around until the last 10 seconds. They picked up that Peyton had been waiting until the clock was run down to actually snap the ball and took advantage. In the very next game the Colts ran a near 2 minute drill paced O off of the opening kickoff to make sure no one would try that on them again.

2009 NBA Finals MVP Kobe Bryant
Did I just see you side-step answering that question, shake n bake?
Does that suggest you might be uneasy with Urlacher’s comment? Just askin’ of course.
I just took it as a general "disguise the defense" strategy
which can work if done well by a talented D
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
really you beat Peyton like you beat any QB
get pressure without blitzing and get pressure before he figures out exactly what coverage you’re running.
It’s just much harder than usual to do those things against him than anyone else.
Luck is probability taken personally, clutch is probability attributed to individuals.
That last statement of yours is the biggest understatement I have ever seen.

Hahahha...right?
It’s like saying Peyton had decent success against the Broncos the last two times he played them in the playoffs.

not sure how you pressure a QB before the the ball is snapped…hhmmmm

Do you buy into
the idea that’s its better to lose one during the regular season to take some pressure off during the playoffs? And not pull a NE vs. Giants. Which I loved the outcome of that SB!
Go Broncos! I’m leading my pick ’em league, and I will pick the Broncos this week too.

I don't think so, but that's a hard thing to tell if you aren't in the locker room
to get a feel for whether the undefeated run is upping the pressure even more than it would already be.

I don't think it'll be an issue
the Colts have been 12-0 before in the not too distant past. They’ll almost surely start sitting guys after the 1 seed is clinched and the backups will lose some of the last 2-3 games.

And that too
has shown to make teams lose some of their sharpness during the playoffs. Of course, nobody would ever try to lose on purpose, but if it happens in a hard fought battle (to the BRONCOS!) all the much better for the colts ;-)

I think the narrative of playoff rust, at least for the Colts ignores a lot of important points
07 and 08 had injuries to irreplaceable parts of the defense, 05 the team was really thrown by the suicide of Dungy’s son and lost to the eventual superbowl champ. In 03 and 04 they rested and won their first playoff game. In 06 they played through week 17 and the offense didn’t play well until their 3rd playoff game.

Good point about the offense
in 2006. They were absolutely putrid for the vast majority of that game (I think some of it had to do with Ty Law). They won that because the defense didn’t allow a first down until there were 4 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. I sure didn’t sense any offensive momentum in that game.

Random fact of the week from the empty void that is my mind: In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak.
A veteran team can get away with that
Look at the 1998 Broncos – went 1-2 at the end of the season, then steam-rollered every team they faced in the playoffs.
Well this has received much less attention...
…even though it was posted first. +1 btw for civility while not throwing out humor. I haven’t set foot in that thread since I called out BBS even though I usually love these things—they help us get to know the team from a homer’s perspective. Well, when people don’t throw education in favor of arrogance, that is.

^Needs explaining: don't call someone asking uncomfortable, slightly antagonistic questions trolls. In all odds they probably just want to learn. It's real easy to differentiate a 'Socratic' post from a trolling one (unless you're a resident of WCG).
^Needs further explaining: I have yet to post anything on WCG, don't worry, I'm not trying to rationalize anything I've done. I've just lurked over there and man, they are the model of post-peloponnesian war Athens.
