Ryan Harris is OUT for the season!

Just got a text message from CBS4 in Denver.  Looks like that toe injury was re aggravated in the worst way.  I can't say I'm that surprised toe injuries are a tricky thing.  So he'll be moved to the Injured Reserved list, now the question is.  Who's out there to fill the spot?  We have Seth Olsen, Brandon Gorin, and of course Ben Hamilton already on the roster.  We have Mitch Erickson on the Practice squad we could promote him.  Or should we pick up someone off the street?

Damn- sorry to hear that.

Need to know who else is available and how well Erickson is doing, but we may not even have to stay within the position.

Hm.

I don’t know that Erickson is a viable solution. As listed he is a 286 pound guard, so I don’t know think he would be ideal at tackle. If he was signed to the active roster that would make three backup guards on our roster, we definitely need some sort of backup tackle to take his place. He will probably be a game day inactive, but you need to have some depth on the o-line.

Olsen has the size at least to man the tackle spot, but I don’t really know how experienced he is playing it. Right now Gorin is our only real tackle backup with Harris out.

I kind of figured that, but that is still a real downer.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Well,

since the season started. Nick Greisen (likely depth or camp fodder) and J’vonne Parker (nose tackle candidate) both went down during the off-season.

Polumbus has been doing a fine job — I imagine they just use Gorin as backup. Maybe work out someone on the street, but can’t imagine they would find much considering the teams out there with issues on their lines

A truth can only be expressed and enveloped in words if it is one-sided. Everything that is thought and expressed in words is one-sided, only half the truth; it all lacks totality, completeness, unity.

I won’t even try to guess how we handle the situation as far as personnel. We’ll see.

The backup OT situation was a weakness before Harris’ injury and it’s an area I"ve advocated drafting help for. Polumbus has value as a backup but there’s a drop off in talent when going from the starters to our backups. And I’m not just stating the obvious here. Gorin has a little value but his placement on the inactive list against K.C. tells us something about how much value he actually has.

My suggestion was that we look for a combination RT/RG type in the draft, which is a position that’s easier to find than LT types, who are highly valued. There are OLs in the draft who’ve played both inside and outside so there are OLs who match this description. Part of the thinking is that the OT position contains the bulk of talent on the OL and would be the best place to find someone who could play OG while backing up RT. Harris, along with Polumbus, would still be the backup at LT.

by Colinski on Dec 8, 2009 3:15 PM MST reply actions

re: personnel

I lean towards using Polumbus. Personnel additions at this point sound better than they work. As Todd Jewell says above, the pickings are slim because everyone else has been looking for OL help, too. High priced has-beens are out there but they don’t often warrant the cost. Teaching them our offense at this late point is difficult. It isn’t so much a knowledge issue as one of coordination and familiarity.

I don’t pretend to be an ‘Xs and Os’ guy so I can’t say authoritatively that someone couldn’t come in an contribute, but past experience shows that late-term fixes rarely succeed. We’re better off going with what we have and scheming (i.e., 3-TEs, etc.) around the problem. Also — I think it’s a good excuse to emphasize the run, although we’ve been doing that lately anyways.

no goats, no glory.

by Colinski on Dec 8, 2009 3:40 PM MST up reply actions

That seems totally reasonable as an asssessment.

That is why I think the spot on the roster may be filled with something other than a lineman, as much as we could use one. Just not much to choose from. Should be intersting to watch.

Damn

But I think Polumbus has been playing pretty well, not sure who is out there as a free agent, maybe Kwame Harris, I saw SD picked up Jon Runyan, so that blows, I think he would of been a great addition. Maybe someone should lob a call to Matt Lepis and see if he thinks he can still play.

Kwame Harris??

Oh hells no. Didn’t you ever see that “Lowlights” 2006 video that someone put on youtube? My gosh that guy sucks out loud. Too bad it’s not available any more.

Maybe we can snatch somebody off somebody’s PS.

George Foster… JK

Lepsis is a drug adict junkie. No thanks.

Didn’t Olsen play tackle at Iowa.

This is my favorite website.

by McGeorge on Dec 8, 2009 9:24 PM MST up reply actions

Yes, he did.

He was a 1st team All-American at right guard in 2008. In 2007 he started 11 games at right tackle and one at right guard. As a sophomore in 2006 Olsen played in13 games, starting 10 contests at three different positions: he opened five games at right tackle, four games at right guard and one game at left guard. That’s some pretty impressive versatility, but questions on his mobility at the NFL level may limit him to guard. In extremis, though, he could step into Polumbus’ position.

I was worried about this from the start.

A dislocated toe is devastating to a lineman. I hope he can come back strong next season.

by Ponderosa on Dec 8, 2009 4:01 PM MST reply actions

Doc's opinion would be of value

My opinion has limited value on medical issues. I’ve dealt with shoulder dislocations and was told that they re-attach the ligament at a higher point to prevent the joint from dislocating. I can’t say how comparable the procedure for shoulders is to a big toe dislocation, though.

My guess is that is that they can fix the problem — given the advancement of medical science — but he’ll need a full off-season to recover.

Harris’ somewhat uncertain prospect for recovery (uncertain at the time of the draft) seems to add a little more weight to the argument that OT depth (and a prospective starter-quality OT) is a goal for the upcoming draft.

I’ve previously outlined that goal as this:

DRAFT:
( qty. – 1 ) OG/OC (target 2nd round, maybe 3rd)
(qty. – 1 ) RT/RG (target 3rd & 4th)

FA:
(qty. – 1 ) OC/OG (target high quality, contingent of availability)

Targets are statements about ‘when’ players of sufficient quality will be available (as they concern the draft). They don’t necessarily lock you into taking a position at that point, especially if a BPA at another position is available that can help you’re team. Necessarily then, there are more targets than can actually be fitted into a draft. Also — a target can include the provision that a position must be filled if possible, so necessity can be part of your drafting criteria. I think it’s a very good idea to add OLs but it’s not requisite, since we can still solve the problem by alternate means. It’s a statement of what we need now if we’re going to be prepared in the future — a multi-year planning exercise.

no goats, no glory.

by Colinski on Dec 8, 2009 4:36 PM MST up reply actions

This immediate setback portends a worse prognosis.

It can take up to two years to completely recover from this injury. Antonio Gates has finally come back this year, but clearly struggled for almost two years with his toe injury. The future of Ryan Harris is still very uncertain, so I agree that we draft an OG and then OT as Colinski suggests to give us depth and flexibility.

Don't overlook FA

Given that we managed to build half a defense on FA last time with a lot of people we had hardly heard of I am sure McD et al already have a prepared “hit list” for any they suspect will be on FA at the end of the year. If they can meet our needs there then they will address them, then they will move on to the draft and still adopt the BPA policy that seems to have worked out just fine so far.

2 yrs from the beginning of this season

or the beginning of next?

Heck, I say Super Bowl bound this season till we ain’t- especially if we handle Indy!

I too dabbled in pacifism once...

by waltersobchakbronco on Dec 8, 2009 5:51 PM MST up reply actions

Beginning of this one, of course. What you sayin' Willis?

But if we handle Indy, I’m on your bandwagen! Heck, I’ll be praying even if we just barely make the playoffs. So what if we win the SB twice in 3 years, or maybe even 3 for 3?

by idahobronc on Dec 8, 2009 7:08 PM MST up reply actions

Not a given that we add RT right away

Our starters at T positions at this point are Clady and Polumbus. Gorin is backup for both. Another T, if signed, will be game-day inactive. We carried 3 tackles into games this year: when Clady/Harris/Polumbus were all healthy, Gorin was inactive. Look no further then last game at KC. This means we are OK if our current 3 are healthy.

Picking up a pricey veteran is a high-risk/low-reward at this point. He will have difficulty learning our offense. And quality tackles that can displace at least Gorin are not exactly lining the streets this time of the year.

So it may be possible for the team to go with current remaining 3 tackles for the rest of the season. Someone may be signed off somebody else’s PS to be a cheap backup, learn our offense in case of another injury and sit in street clothes on game days.

Hire some Colombians

Suggested this earlier for Peyton Manning, but this time we have the Colombians kidnap Micheal Oher, drug him with scopolomine and tell him to play for us

by Flunkie on Dec 8, 2009 9:54 PM MST reply actions

Well, here is our PS. Who you gonna bring up?

35 Ball, Lance RB
 85 Branson, Marquez TE
 25 Carter, Tony CB
 61 Erickson, Mitch G
 40 Moulton, Rashod CB
 52 Kelley, Braxton LB
 96 Powell, Carlton DL
 12 Willis, Matthew WR

I'm thinking

That you go with a CB either Moulton or Carter because that’s what we need to find out about for next year. Age is not our friend at that position.

Interesting option on Marquez Branson

This is from the denverbroncos.com post on him:
Led all FCS tight ends in both receptions and touchdown catches in 2008… Recorded a career-high 174 receiving yards on five receptions with three touchdowns (79, 59 and 13 yds.) against Quincy University (9/20/08)…
I’ve been thinking about the situation with Tony Scheffler. I think that the Broncos would love to keep him if the money can be worked out, but that Denver also has an option with Branson if Scheffler leaves. He’s mostly a receiving TE, lighter than most at only 241 lb (about Spencer Larsen weight, if I can use that image). However – he’s fast, he has good hands and as a receiving threat, he could make some noise for us.
