Strange...was his injury worse than we think?

Then again, we have a new coach which means all of the players have no histories with this coach. most of the players anyway

I think
it is a bad move releasing AA. I bet you see him get picked up really fast. I think he would have been a great KR.PR and scat back RB for us. They will regret this if he goes somewhere else and goes off next year. This is one move i really do not like. At least he is still on my madden team where he is unstoppable

I agree, which is why I wonder if his injury is worse than we are led to believe.
Or McD just doesn’t see any use for him in his offense….we just don’t know anything yet. We did cut the mustard though.

good point...
Cutting a guy like Alridge seems very weird. Wasn’t he undraftet? I mean getting paid around minimum, he should get the chance to show what he can do in the voluntary workout, right?

It wouldn't be a list of released players...
without Chad Mustard’s name on it. That man has been signed and released by us more times than I can count. Hopefully we resign him in a few weeks to keep the cycle going.

No kidding. I was thinking the same thing.....here we go again with Chad.
Just imagine how he feels. I bet he is used to it by now.
I am a bit bummed they let Alridge go. He was injured in preseason so I was hoping he would be given another chance. Since 3 RBs have been let go (assuming neither gets signed later to the practice squad) I am assuming that McDaniels may grab a solid RB in the draft. We’ll see.

There are a few RB that should have been released before AA
Hall, Young, Pittman(too old), Boyd. AA is way more explosive then all of those players combined. Hall just fumbles, young is always hurt, pittman is getting to old, and boyd just didn’t do anything. AA never got a chance after the last preseason game where he looked awesome. They only put him on IR because they were afraid they would lose him if they released him. He would have never cleared waivers. I guess Bobby Turner had no say in that decision.

From there, I'd like to say that the wheels came off, but that wouldn't feel like an accurate description. The wheels didn't just magically come off, the Raiders all got out of the car, shot the wheels off the own car, busted out the taillights, smashed the windshield and poured Splenda in the gas tank. Pittman?
What are you nuts??? If the man wants to keep playing, we need to keep him. He is a veteran and can scratch whatever itches from the RB position. He’s cheap and quality. No reason to get rid of him unless he chooses to retire.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

No i am not Nuts
Pittman is cheap but he is not Cheaper then AA. AA was an undrafted FA that was making the league minimum which i believe is somewhere neare $450000 and Pitman is making the veteran league minimum which is closer to 1 million. AA also has a lot more upside then Pittman. Pittman is old and does not have much left in his tank. I would take AA potential over Pittmans age any day of the week.

AA = One Trick Pony.
Honestly, since college, what has he done? Pittman played hard and well for us for several weeks last year before another freak injury to a RB. He showed heart, and I can’t see why people on this site continue to bash him. Remember how good he was for the Jacksonville game? The Tampa Bay game? How he just ran people over? He’s like another version of Hillis, just sub him in when Hillis is tired and get ethe same effect.

I'll stick to disagreeing
Nothing I’ve seen leads me to believe Pittman doesn’t have much left in the tank. He’s in great shape and is leaps and bounds more valuable than AA. AA = speed running. Pittman = Power running, pass blocking, catching out of the backfield, short yardage powerhouse.
AA has shown me he can play well in a preseason game. Pittman has shown me he can play…period. I will take THAT over AA’s “potential” any day of the week.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

Pittman
was servicable if anything. Yea he ran ok in the JAC and TB game but we also lost the JAC. He never really ran people over. He just falls forward when he gets hit. He is nothing like Hillis, Hillis hit the hole with more power and never hesitated. Hillis also has better footwork and mover better in open space then Pittman does. The only reason he showed heart because he is vet and he knew if he did not perform he would be cut. I do not believe AA was really ever injured. I think shanny stashed him on IR and never really gave him a chance. AA showed me more in a full game then Torain did in on half. People are saying AA is just a speed back. Go back and watch the final preseason game. The guy runs with some power for his size. When he gets hit he falls forward and rarely gets pushed back. He also ran between the tackles a lot in that game. He is not just a speed/break it outside back.

AA was an undrafted free agent.
He also didn’t play last year. Those two factors tell me he’s not a hot commodity. Keep in mind that McDaniels isn’t making these decisions on his own. There are incumbents who not only helped in deciding to pick AA up in the first place, but they worked with him last summer – Turner, Dennison and the Goodman’s. I doubt this is McDaniels exerting his power and going against the will of his new advisors…

What I left out...
was that the grass is always very green on the IR and the practice squad (not to mention other franchises’ ST corps, ie. Niko). We all have an inflated view of AA because he’s really fast and we know the Broncos can do amazing things with running backs. Therefore, many of us (myself included) probably assumed he was a good fit on the Broncos and all he needed was some health to become a fine third-down option for Denver. Really, Shanny went to the garbage heap a few too many times in regards to running backs. Selvin Young was undrafted, Andre Hall was Chicago’s trash. We all got psyched about those two for about 6 months and now look…

My initial thought on Alridge was "bummer"
but the I remembered his interviews. He isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, and he was only a one trick pony (who never got a chance to prove otherwise after getting IR’d). I can definitely understand McDaniel’s evaluation if he judged him not up to high enough standards. Hall, Young and Pittman all have experience and production, so this move makes sense, even if it dissapoints because we will never know what could have been.
Maybe AA will get picked up by someone else and we will have a chance to see what he can do…
Overall it definitely looks like a lot of fallout from the RB on IR spectacle from last year has been cleaned out.
Concision in style, precision in thought, decision in life.

yea but hall, young and pittman
have all played and all did not really prove anything. Pittman did run ok when he started but Hall and Young really have never shown anything special. I would have rather gave AA a shot over hall, young or pittman. Also Turner had to see something in him to bring him in to the broncos in the first place. You should also go back and look at AA stats in college. He averaged nearly 10 yards a carry one season. He was a very productive runner in college and was not drafted because of his size.

Recognizing that Coach Turner probably worked with A Alridge quite a bit this last season ( practice & such),
and I would imagine that he’s likely providing lots of input on our running backs to McDaniels, there are likely some things that we just don’t know about AA yet. I wish him well! In Bowlen I Trust!!!

Really…what about the other games where he was used as a back-up and short-yardage? He was money. Look at the pass protection and authority he runs with. He was superb until he was misused as a starter.

Pittman did several things very well.
He blocked, he caught passes, he got tough third down yardage. How many of those things did Alridge do? None! He was on IR all year.
And what makes you think Pittman is washed up? Old does not equal washed up. It is ALWAYS good to have some veteran influence and leadership, regardless of how big your youth movement is. Who knows? Maybe he’ll teach Tater how to block.

I watched him
I just think he is not worth the money. I think we could get a better veteran in free agency such as derrick ward. The problem with pittman is his injury. Which i believe was his neck/spine. That is a serious injury that will not be easy to come from. Also if he gets hit the wrong way it could easily reinjure that area. Also he did not look great he was alright. he was in because we did not have anyone else. I would take, Hillis, Torain and Quik Six before pittman. They all make less money and are younger. They also have more upside. We already know what Pittman can do. he has always been a backup and alwasy will be. I think Pittman gets cut before the season.

there's some common ground
I would be a fan of picking up Ward…but still keep Pittman if he wants to play. Ward would do great in our system.
My big support of Pittman comes from the standpoint of A) he’s cleared by the doctors (which I believe he is) and B) he wants to keep playing (unknown). If he’s a serious risk due to re-injury, he needs to hang it up.
He was in in the games he played in because he earned that right and performed. The only way Pittman gets cut is if the doctors don’t clear him or he retires.

I definitely disagree
Pittman was running extremely well until he got hurt. His age may be a concern if your talking about his prospects for the future. But what I got from watching him was a fond hope that the rest of the RBs were taking note of the fire he was displaying on the field. I remember that specifically because I hadn’t expected to be nearly as impressed as I was, knowing his rep with other teams wasn’t that great.
So I’m glad we have him. But I’m really glad we have Hillis.

With change and upheaval
come these sorts of tough decisions. Often when things change, people want to keep what they see as good, and just change the bad. Sometimes, the best way to go is just to stir things up, get rid of some of the good with the bad and start fresh. This is the model Bowlen used when he fired Shanahan. He wanted to go in a “different direction.” He is getting his wish. We are looking for a good MIX of players we can call a team, and a good coach knows this. I put my faith in Bowlen and McDaniels to make the decisions as to who is a team asset.
I was surprised about Alridge, and really Pope as well. It didn’t seem that he played badly the few times we saw him. The game plan was changed before he got too much of a chance to run.
Change is good. Embrace the face of the new Denver Broncos. Let’s see what REPLACES AA and crew before we are too critical. Let’s remember, cap space is nice, but it’s useless to just have cap space. Let’s USE it to bring in some talent. Having too much cap space is like a miser hoarding gold. It’s there to be spent. Let’s go make life better in Broncoland.

yes
That’s what I recall, and it’s one rule that many want changed. The owners lowered the number recently (effectively, by stripping the exemption for NFL Europa) as a cost cutting move, but it hamstrings the coaches, who need greater numbers to start camp.
Essentially, we have to cut if we want to bring in players. And we’ll be seeing a number of players cut to make room for the draftees.

None of these are surprising...
Because of all the injuries last year the Broncos have too many RBs, TEs and WRs on the roster. They can have all they want, but there are practical limitations to how many you can actually evaluate.
With AA, I’m sure if Bobby Turner wanted to keep him he would. There must be some reason, such as too slow to pick up the system, for letting him go.

AA looked promising
but I have to say if Coach and co. didn’t like this kid then I guess we are going to see him on a few other practice squads. I never thought him Starting or even 3rd down material. He was always always always a change of pace guy!

Don't worry -- Shanny will sign him again immediately in 2010.

Mustard in 2009
CM: Hello?
MS: Hey Chad.
CM: Coach! What’s up??
MS: I need you again.
CM: GREAT! But… I thought…aren’t you out of coaching this year?
MS: Yeah, I just called cuz I need somebody to shingle my mansion, and I heard you were on the market again…
CM: I’m THERE.
(four weeks later)
CM: All done, coach!
MS: Great work, Chad. Looks good. And I like the way you handled yourself on the eaves.
CM: Thanks, coach!
MS: You’re fired.
CM: Aw, dammit!
MS: See you next year?
CM: Sure!!
MS: Sweet. Enjoy the shoe store!
CM: You know I will!

Whats done is done now !
Its hard to believe that there were on cuts on the defensive unit !
Are they done cutting now or will there be more cuts to come ?

There will be more

They will keep paymah
The other two can rot or possibly play back-up.
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

First Post!
Brand new poster here. Just wanted to say, this isn’t really that big of a surprise if we all just sit back and look at it. Almost everybody raves about Hillis being the big bruiser RB we need. Well, AA is 5’9" 185. I know he’s fast, but if you’re that small, you better run a 4.1 to play RB in the pros.

Welcome, 10-5r
And that’s a good point – it’s also fair to note that if you’re a 5’9 (was he even that big?) 185 undrafted RB and you immediately wind out your 1st season on IR, you’d better have something huge to offer to get kept. Pope did surprise me more – Does anyone know if the PS is just disbanded or if Boyd is under some kind of contract? He didn’t make it to the Show, but for some reason I like the guy.

Boyd is still here, and 8 other RBs
Of the 72 on the roster, we have 6 RBs and 3 FBs. Nine total.

I did a quick search
He was actually 5’10, but only 170. Injured right off, he wasn’t going to stand up to an nfl season.

Boyd
Good call on Boyd. I know he didn’t really get in the game, (I think he got in for one snap) but I’m curious about him. I saw some videos of him with the Gamecocks and I like his style. And he has the size to be durable. The way I see it, you can’t play hard-nosed, 3-4 D with a finesse running game on O.

Bear, I think that practice squad contracts come up around this time, because if you are looking at any of the wire services, a TON of practice squad contracts came up today, from teams all over the league…

Actually.....
I like the ‘idea’ of AA but we need even more room to allow the staff to construct the beginnings of a new team.
The best way the staff can start over on defense is by finding players who fit into the new scheme, and players on the bubble are basically interchangeable parts — unfortunately. We can’t stock the new defense with personnel through the draft and free agency alone, so bringing in players of an equivalent talent level who fit the new system is the best way of planting the ‘new seed.’

I think these moves make sense.
I know everyone is high on AA, but put it into perspective. What has he really done? Some great runs to the outside in a preseason game, followed by a season ending injury? Are we really going to let ourselves get that high on that kind of story?
As for Mustard, he’s my favorite choice at #3 TE. A solid blocker who has shown he can catch too. But really, I have to keep in mind that he’s a #3 on the depth chart.
The other three names don’t bother me much at all.

I agree somewhat
But I think there are some other guys that could be shown the door first (Niko Koudividas comes to mind along with McCree, Manual, and Hall), who all have shown they are not everydown NFL caliber players, at least Aldridge showed potential and has big play ability, I would have at least liked to see him get a chance to show what he could do next season.

Koutou = Special teams demon.
Nothing more. He may suck as a starting MLB, but he sure as hell can run down the field and hit people. I know I’m in the minority, but I’d like to keep him.

Ktou's problem
his biggest one at any rate, is how valuable he is as a roster cut. When his production gets weighed, it will need to offset the cherry cap number that occurs if he gets cut….

It blows my mind that they are all offensive players and
no Defensive players were cut. You think JM and co would have cleaned house with the defense before they did anything with the offense. I think we can expect a lot more players getting cut in the next few week and traded when the trading period begins.

What I would expect
I think McD is reevaluating the whole D. Everyone not named Champ will have to compete for a spot to compete for a spot on the team. There are no given spots, and how hard you work in OTA’s determines if you make it to training camp. I think he will want to find the cream of the crap before he makes any hasty decisions. That’s what I would do if I got the keys to this crappy car. Find all the adequate parts, and replace all the dysfunctional ones.

Had the same thought initially
Then I realized McD may be focusing on one unit at a time initially, until he gets a feel for his roster. He probably has had Nolan looking at the D and just need to finalize some decisions there. I’m sure he knows there’s much more work to be done on that side of the ball.

Alridge claimed by Redskins
Along with the surprising firings of the Goodmans we find;
One of the players the Broncos released Wednesday – running back Anthony Alridge – was claimed off waivers Thursday by both Minnesota and Washington and was awarded to the Redskins because they finished with a worse record this past season.

I think he will come back to haunt us like Hixon, but worse, I see him becoming a very exciting and explosive player
