The Draft: First Primaries
That magical time of year is upon us: Dravtivus is here at last! Everyone is undefeated, the future is bright, and young stars are about to begin their careers with new teams. Best of all, pitchers and catchers are about to report, so we only have to pretend to care about basketball for a couple more weeks!
Here at MHR, we have the luxury of having brilliant football minds do brilliant football research. What this means is that MHR's excellent draft page is the only place you need to go for top quality draft information. Hopefully you have checked out the awesome, awesome MHR Draft Headquarters and done some research on other, less qualified sites (such as ESPN or SI.com) and you know a little about the candidates the Broncos may select with the twelfth pick of the first round. Because that is all I want to know: what you know!
I want to find out who the average Bronco fan wants to select in the first round. I did a similar poll about who you wanted as the next head coach (and of course, we were all way the hell off, with Josh McDaniels netting 3% of the vote.) This is a first in a series of polls I'm going to do throughout the reloading season. I'll do another poll right after the Combine, and a last one the week before the draft. I meant to do one before the Senior Bowl, but I didn't realize how early the Senior Bowl was. (Also, who really cares about the Senior Bowl?)
So the question I pose is simple: who do you draft? For the sake of argument let's assume that all of these guys will stick around to #12. That's not going to happen, but I don't want this to get too complicated. Also, I'm not going to try to sway you in any way, so I won't say who I want or don't want until the comments. Also, I want you to comment! Tell me why you want to draft this person.
Right now, I only am including the most talked-about names on MHR, but if there's a guy you want that isn't here, make a good case for him in the comments, get one second and I'll put him in the poll. I'd rather not let this poll get too enormous like the last one.
Now that you've tolerated my incessent rambling, (thanks for doing that, by the way) get out there and VOTE!! It's the patriotic thing to do, after all.

My top guy
Is Maualuga. I want his leadership and intensity more than anything, and I think he’ll be a top-quality ILB. But mostly, I want a guy who plays hard and fast, and makes other guys do that too. I’ll stick by my other picks as I wrote in a comment a few days ago. I even projected their Bronco jersey numbers so you can imagine them in the blue and orange.
1) Rey Maualuga, ILB, USC. #58
2) Patrick Chung, S, Oregon. #25
3) Fili Moala, DE, USC. #75
4) Terrance Taylor, DT, Michigan. #99
5) Rashad Jennings, RB, Liberty. #30
5) Sammie Lee Hill, DT, Stillman. #97
6) David Johnson, QB, Tulsa. #9
7) Wopamo Osaisai, CB, Stanford. #37
7) Dallas Reynolds, C, BYU. #60

I suspect
that rather than Xanders taking a much larger role in player evaluation, the increase in authority may actually fall to Jedi McD and his coordinators instead.
I want Maualuga
I think that Maualuga is a good start to building a tough defense like those in Pittsburgh and Baltimore. He is a guy that isn’t afraid to smack you in the mouth similar to what Al Wilson used to do, and what Ray Lewis has been doing. We still need to get a NT to take up some of those blockers, but I don’t think that Raji is the answer.
The NFL network is reporting that NE NT Vince Wilfork
Is unhappy that the pats did not start the salary talks reguarding keeping him he will be a free agent
but he wants to stay in NE thats why he is upset
we should make a play for him .

I would take Wilfork...give them our second and call it square!
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
He's set to be free next year...
I linked to a story from the Boston-area media about this a couple weeks ago. They are unlikely to be able or willing to pay him big dollars over the long term. I doubt they let him get away now, but it’s an intriguing possibility. I’d give up this year’s 2 and next year’s 3 for him, no question.

And with McD's connections to Pats maybe we can swing something!!!

Belichick and his former assistants
Supposedly have an agreement not to mess with each others players. So unless New England doesn’t want Wilfork anymore, we won’t go after him.
Would be a great fit and would be huge, but I don't see New England letting him go

I like the idea of trading down to the mid twenties for a second round pick or a third and some change...
Then we can draft some guys we can use as future replacements for D. Graham and C. Bailey with what we get in return. We can draft Cushing there move DJ to the middle and have our linebackers be Cushing, DJ, WW, and free agent like Canty or Peppers.
Yes, I'm a Diamondback and Suns fan. So you may be wondering, "Why does this fool like the Broncos so much?"
A: The Cardinals are too hard of a pill to swallow. Oh yeah and that Elway dude....
On second thought, it be nice to move WW to saftey as I think he could play...
Then put Larsen on the field and let em rip

WW cannot play safety...
He just doesn’t swivel on the run well enough. If we had decent safeties that would have been obvious.

Agreed... it's not a speed issue, it's a fludity issue

I'll be disappointed if Maualuga is not drafted by us
I’d hate to see him go to San Diego.
Like you said, Papi, I think he’ll bring intensity to the defense. I want a scary defense like what Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and to a lesser extent, NE have. NE used to be scarier, but they’re getting older now, and just seem…less…somehow. I want teams to be beaten before they even get to town because they are psyched out by the altitude and the attitude.
Go Broncos.

I'm torn between Cushing and rey
Rey has the leadership we desperately need but Cushing has the versatility to play all LB spots and DE in a 4-3 which we also desperatley need and he is a better pass rusher. I went with Cushing because we could trade down to low 20’s and still get him while aquiring another third or most likely fourth.
83 days til draft...
Maualuga
Need more Samoans. Plus, I think we need an inside linebacker who has size, speed, and leadership, with some playmaking abilities.

A MileHighClubPresident sighting!!
(I would know, he’s right next to me.)
OK, now go read this, this, and this, and you’ll be good to go! Oh, and maybe these, but only if you get around to it. I dunno, they’re alright. Mostly just ‘fluff’ reading.

Nice sig
It does us all a “Service.”
If you haven’t traveled to Alaska, you should give it a try. The Broncos have a very healthy following up here!

Good post, Papi. There is no doubt that we need a dominant MLB / ILB.
I voted for Raji thinking that he is probably the most ready to contribute immediately of the available NT in the draft. We need a stud like Rey at LB and a another stud at Safety. I think it is a tossup as to whom we draft first – we need 3 game ready guys – whether we get them from the draft, FA or by trade. I liked your mock draft. These guys would work pretty well for whatever scheme we end up with: a 3-4; a hybrid; or if we stay with a 4-3 (probably about 1% probability of that).
That will be a huge consideration at #12
who gives us the most “man-games” up front, because Pat will be paying top dollar for those man-games.
Hell, I’d go so far as to insist on a high number of “man-plays” if that makes sense. It is after all a business, something that should be painfully obvious to all of us starting with Shanny’s firing and (hoepfully!) ending with Goodmans…

Im going with Rey and I have to be right bacuse I was with Josh
what are the odds, 3%, looks like rey is coming to town!!
Trade Down And...
[drum roll]… draft Moreno. He’s a top ten talent that might slip into the second half of the first round!
Right on.
I am Jack's unbridled optimism.
by A.J. Haefele on Feb 13, 2009 12:25 AM MST up reply actions
I have to disagree.....
Moreno definitely won’t make it out of the top 20 and may not make it out of the top 15. If you want him at 12, take him. I am back and forth on taking a running back in the first round. I would prefer a 3rd rounder for a running back.
Trade back
Pick up an extra pick this year and hopefully next then look at who look like best from English, Laurinaitis, Brown, Delmas, and Moore. If Moreno were to fall that far, you’d have to consider it, but I don’ t think he will.
Trade Down vote here
In a perfect world we’d trade down in the draft and get Cushing late in the 1st and an extra pick later in the day. :)
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.
