Salary Cap Irritations
I'm not sure if this has been posted yet, but I found this on Rocky Mountain News' website and felt the need to share it:
Pos. Player 2009 cap figure DT Dewayne Robertson $16,000,000 CB Champ Bailey $13,668,525 LB D.J. Williams $11,634,500 CB Dre' Bly $6,800,000 TE Daniel Graham $6,650,000 G Ben Hamilton $4,484,000 LB Boss Bailey $3,855,000 WR Brandon Stokley $3,785,416 RB *Travis Henry $3,600,000 LB Niko Koutouvides $3,061,666 QB Jay Cutler $2,712,500 LB Jamie Winborn $2,250,000 DE John Engelberger $2,185,000 T Ryan Clady $2,141,250 DE Jarvis Moss $1,900,000 WR *Keary Colbert $1,666,667 C Casey Wiegmann $1,350,000 S Marquand Manuel $1,333,333
What the hell!? DeWayne Robertson is NOT worth $16,000,000...he isn't worth $4,000,000 to me for the amount of playing time he had last season. Mike Shanahan is a damn fool for bringing him in with that much of a price tag. The only other thing that bothers me is Travis Henry....man we have a lot of dead weight on our salary cap. I hope Xanders and McD are better stewards of the future for our team.
Hell, if Robertson is worth $16,000,000 then they need to pay me a $150,000 for just being a fan. :P Seeing his name at the top is very irritating for me....
Update. Using the same article I found some interesting tidbits that pleased me:
http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2009/feb/12/legwold-nfl-housecleaning-begins/
* They currently have 18 players slated to count at least $1 million each against the 2009 salary cap.
* Ten of those players are on defense, where the Broncos finished at or near the bottom in every major category in 2008.
Leading the way is defensive tackle Dewayne Robertson, whose bonus-heavy deal is set to count $16 million against the cap in '09 unless the Broncos redo it or release him. So most in the league believe he will not be on the roster under his current contract next month.
* Two players among the 18 are no longer with the team - running back Travis Henry and wide receiver Keary Colbert. They will count $3.6 million and $1,667,000 against the '09 cap despite having no chance to play a snap for the team.
Henry, who is facing federal drug charges, last played for the Broncos in 2007, yet his cap figure still is the ninth-highest on the team.
* Five players on the list who were on the roster and healthy did not start the season finale in December - Brandon Stokley ($3,785,000 against the cap), Niko Koutouvides ($3.06 million), John Engelberger ($2,185,000), Jarvis Moss ($1.9 million) and Marquand Manuel ($1.33 million).
Of that group, only Stokley is considered to be an "impact" contributor by rival personnel executives.

I had to rant....I couldn't help it. :)
Is there such a thing as a Playstation 3 Anonymous? I can't seem to stop thinking about or playing COD 4 and COD 5. I hear this is quite normal for a teenager, but I haven't been a teenager since Bill Clinton was frolicking with interns.
Zappa, don't they make a cream for Salary Cap irritations?
"I am not trying to start anything I am just saying that i think if you take Knowshon and draft D later you guys will be hella good next year" ...IamtheGreatest - The smartest Chiefs fan I ever had the priviledge of reading!
No, but they got a strong ointment.

Note the wording
Unless the Broncos redo or release him…There is no way they were ever going to pay him that much. It was always a cheapie one year deal with a ’We’ll see how you do" on the end.
I’m pretty sure Cutler’s agent has this hanging on the wall next to his shaving mirror with such illuminaries as Travis Henry, Niko and Boss outweighing Jay. Actually, the only thing it lacks is seeing the hit we’ll take if we cut or trade Bly, Champ, etc. DJ is a vast hit for a guy who had an awful year, but again, I don’t know what it would be to cut or trade 9obviously trade) him. Some of our members do, though. Guys?
Couldn't You Guys Play Nice?
We gotta keep DJ.
What do you expect him to do with playing a different position every year? He was bound to stumble eventually. lol I agree with you about everything else though :)

DJ is currently my favorite player on the Broncos
so for a biased opinion what are the thoughts of this dream line up:
WSOLB- Wesley Woodyard
WSILB – DJ Williams
SSILB- Rey Maualuga
SSOLB – Brain Cushing/ Aaron Curry (its a dream remember)

I don't know where they get there numbers but....
Robertson signed a back-end loaded $24million contract for six years. I show that he gets $900,000 in salary for 2009 plus a roster bonus of $4mill if he’s still on the team on 3/3. His cap hit is only $3mill in 2009 NOT $16mill. If he’s cut before 3/3 there’s a $2.5 mill hit. My guess is they are evaluating draft/FA prospects before deciding whether to cut him or not.
does RMN have access to stuff we don't?
Or are they just incompetent?

Maybe
they’re trying to save their bacon by going tabloid and sensationalizing everything.

Other issues....
Travis Henry is a June roster cut. That rule allows a team to spread the cap hit for cut players over two years.
Colbert is an example of the same since he was traded after June 1.
Their # on DJ looks about 2x two high. He signed a 6-year deal for $32mill. His cap hit should be between just under $7mill.
I've found an article from by John Miller of DraftSharks.com posted several places
It ranks teams by their expected cap space. Here’s the good part:
3. Denver — $34m under – New coach Josh McDaniels has needs everywhere, primarily on defense. This unit could see a massive slash-fest that frees up another $15m or so, giving them near $50m to spend! S Marlon McCree, S Marquand Manuel, LB Nate Webster, LB Boss Bailey, DE Ebenezer Ekuban, & DT Dewayne Robertson are just 6 of maybe 10-12 defense cap-cuts. McDaniels won’t leave offense off his wish list since he’s holding a platinum credit card. Free-agent RB Derrick Ward is a perfect fit. They have 2 great WRs in Brandon Marshall & Eddie Royal, but what about adding WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh? McDaniels witnessed T.J. burning New England for 26 catches, 340 yards and 1 TD in the last 3 meetings.
Perhaps even better
28. Oakland — $4m under – Ouch, CB DeAngelo Hall counts $5m in dead money after being cut. To make it worse he suddenly played like a Pro Bowler again in Washington. WR Javon Walker has a $5m roster bonus due next month. He’ll actually collect it because of an injury guarantee – and his cap hit is $14m if they cut him. Stupid contracts, Al. OT Robert Gallery will have to rework his deal to shave off his $9.2m cap charge.
Was your wish list that we'd have tons of cap room?
Or are you talking about Houshmandzadeh and Ward?
I just don't think Bowlen has that cash just lying around.
Being under the cap and having the money to spend are two different things.

I wasn't suggesting that we'd cut every significant contract and then go on a spending spree
but at least we aren’t limited in that regard.
We shouldn’t be looking to fill up all or most of that space, anyways- before long, we’re going to have to be signing bigger contracts for the 2006 draftees, and that will take up a fair amount.
Yeah, it would be nice to see Bowlen set the organization up to lock in long term deals on all or most of our young stars
this year and next…

Travis Henry
This one blows my mind. I didn’t follow the details of his contract as it was restructured last year, but even though he was eventually exonerated…. what in the @*#!! were we thinking not conditioning the entire sum of his contract on whether or not he would stay away from pot???
I know he was exonerated in court for that weird testing incident. But the fact remains that even before he was signed he had a history.
What bothers me is that the Broncos let him go June 2 saying he was inconsistent and lacked motivation (hmmm, remind you of anything?). It turns out that a few weeks earlier, he had tested positive for marijuana … but the Broncos didn’t find out until after they cut him. Now we’re on the HOOK??
Not sure I’d be paying him a red cent. The odor of this one continues to linger.
Thanks, Zappa, for giving us the occasion to vent a little here. My weekend is looking a little happier now.

I'd be okay paying Travis Henry's salary...IF every dime was split and sent to is 475 children.

Haha wow...
I’d LOVE to make that much money doing nothing. Completely forgot about that one small extra name on the cap list. Thanks for reminding me.
Actually he's not making that now....
that’s a bonus that was paid to him in 2007. It just gets spread over multiple years under the cap rules. He’s not actually getting a dime form the Broncos.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Feb 14, 2009 9:10 AM MST up reply actions
He already got the dime.

There is no way that Robertson figure is correct
Maybe that was the amount he would have counted on Jets cap, he was supposed to have a huge bonus.
However, keep in mind that his playing time last year was specifically designed to keep from having to give the Jets as much as a 2nd round pick, which apparently would have been sent if his playing time and stats reached some threshold. As it stands, Robertson played less than 65% of the snaps and thus the Jets got the following:
A SACK FULL OF NOTHING. Suck it Jets.

The Hanging Curve
The money is theoretical....
Teams usually spend pretty close to what they have regardless of the cap….the cap used to mean something but it is so high now that most small market teams can’t come close to it.

The salary cap...
is an artificial number loosely connected to contracts. The Broncos organization does get to keep any revenue after expenses whihc includes salaries and bonuses. But Pat Bowlen doesn’t get the money. Pat is just the majority owner or a corporation called Denver Broncos Football which has other minor owners such as John Elway. The owners can choose to distribute profits to themselves (not usually) or to retain earnings (keeping the money with the team). PB also get a salary as the president of the team.
Most of what team owners make is the increase in value of the franchise. The reason a guy like Ralph Wilson is crying (even though he made to HoF WTF) is that he can’t generate enough income from his team to support him in the lifestyle he would like to be accustomed to without selling the team. It really isn’t a small market/big market issue. It’s an issue of which owners don’t need to make any money off their teams, e.g. Dan Snyder, Jerry Jones, even Pat Bowlen, and which owners are not as independently wealthy as they would like to be. Pittsburgh is a small market team but it hasn’t hindered them.
