New Coach New Team?
So with our new coach chances are good we could be fielding an entirely new team in some respects next year. I posted earlier on who we shoudl keep and let go that being said I will try and write the same pieces i did last year at this time on each position. Our biggest problem since about 1999 is finding solid players be it starters or depth guys we havent been able to field a solid team. To Prime every one here for the draft pieces I am doing I am going to give my reasons for keeping certain players. If you want my reasons why I dont have someone on there then ask away but that is too much to make into one post.
Jay Cutler, QB - Jay is entering his fourth year in the league with probably the chance to emerge as the top quarterback this year. Sure Peyton and Tom will be top guys and you have the otehrs who show up here and there but Jay has the chance to top them all with a Coach who knows that Jay is the man in denver much like Elway was in the past. Firstfan tried to start some discussion by suggesting we trade Jay. After browsing around many otehr denver sites I have seen others say it and MEAN it! Jay isnt going anywhere thats that!
Denver Running Backs - 5,280 and counting! I would say we had a slight RB injury issue last year. That being said I think we keep only three guys here. Peyton Hillis, Ryan Torain and Andrew Pinnock. Why those three? Pinnock is a Heath Evans type FB who is short yardage and blocking, therefore I believe he stays. Some may argue that Hillis and Torain are the same type of back. I disagree Hillis will bowl them over if he has to and Torain showed me he coudl read the hole but not break the tackle as often as Hillis. As for the rest of this crew, bye-bye! We will probably pick up two more RB's in the draft. Look for a change of pace guy to be one of those picks. I will say this Sproles will not be in Denver next season. I just don't see SD letting him come here!
WR Brandon, Brandon and Eddie? - I dont see a big need other than depth here so we may retain Jackson but I doubt it we will hit young guys for depth.
TE with no Mustard - Scheffler and Graham are pretty much locked up here. I could see us targeting one or two guys here for young depth. Someone has to replace Graham here in a bit as a Blocking beast.
Offensive Line did not offend - Here we are looking for two things depth and replacements! Who replaces Benny Boy? is Ten Tigers the real deal? The Secret Service did Outstanding this year but where is the depth? Are we retaining Erik Pears?
Linebackers - Here it gets scary. I think after all is said and done Larsen, DJ and WW are the only ones left. I think we also add Moss to this list from the DE list and possibly crowder though I see him more as a 3-4 DE truth be told. Doom Coudl end up here as well. Our blitz packages coudl be cool but that many guys flying around I think DJ moves back inside and sits next to WW. this could be our biggest target in the draft!
Defensive Line was OFFENSIVE! - If I had no Cap issues whatsoever Thomas woudl be the only one left besides crowder. I think Crowder and Thomas on the ends could be good now we just need a real NT and some depth!
DB? We had one? WOW - I swear sometimes I couldnt tell if denver had a defensive backfield! Champ Jack and the two Josh's are the only two I would keep. Thats it dump the rest.
This is just me spouting off the handle but hey let me know what you think. Now you know who I want to keep and then what type of players I will be looking for in the position packs!

I think i'd Keep Barrett also.
He showed some promise for having limited starts.
Why we didn’t let him start immediatly instead of the crap safety’s we had all year is beyond me. I mean, even as a rookie, could he of been much worse than the ones we had?

Nice post. I like what Bowlen…he is like a suicide bomber and he just walked into the Denver Bronco facility and PUSHED THE BUTTON. :)

It will be very interesting
to see which of the players we are assuming will be back actually will be back. Even on the offensive side of the ball, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a very good, beloved player let go if they were just flat unable to play to their strengths in the new scheme.
You have to believe McD will mitigate that risk mostly by custom fitting his scheme to the players he has available, but probably not to the extent that he would unbalance it or allow it not to work just to accommodate one player, unless they’re Cut, B Marsh, or Champ.

The only defensive player who would be cap suicide...
are Bly, Champ, and DJ. There are other, like Boss, who could cost a buck or two, but they wouldn’t be suicidal. One legitimate cap strategy would be to go ahead and take the cap hit this year in order to clear out the dead wood. See

Yeah but bell is still young too
He’s what 25? And he could save a draft pick on a RB and we can use that on defense

The biggest Problem
I have with Tatum Bel is that he is inconsistent. Back “in the day” he only played well when he had to win his spot or his contract. Essentially this was a “contract” year because we only signed him for one. I know he played his tail off and I am sure he will be invited to camp, but I do not see him making the team. Plus the zone block system requires a specific type of player and there are not too many one cut runners on the board at high levels. I think Coach McD will find what he wants across the board. I know the goodmans are gone but we have the same talent on the scouting crew! Here is to hoping!

Change of pace
Inconsistent is what you will get with a RB like Tatum. Sproles doesn’t spring 5 yards every rush. They have stats like that (5 yard averages) because of their ability to take it to the house. It doesn’t happen every game, but a good change of pace back will hit a home run every so often.
Tatum can do that. Also, he can pass block darned well for a RB. The kid has heart and I think he has learned his lesson about playing in the NFL…you won’t see any more of the Tatum of old with more attitude than play…I’m sure the cell phone manager experience has been humbling. I think he is going to play his tail off and win a spot this training camp (unless he gets traded).
I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

The problem with Bell
is not his attitude but his skill set. He doesn’t read blocks well enough or fast enough to be decisive in his cuts. He’s just not a natural one-cut back. Plus, as Styg has pointed out more than once, he goes down if a defender glares at him.

Nice post JT, but a couple of things...
Crowder is too small to use at DE in a 3-4, although he maybe a situational player in any hybrid scheme we bring to the table.
Ben Hamilton is only 31 so he has some years left, and I thought he played really well this year.
I agree on Pinnock, and he will be a good fit for our pats based scheme.
I am still in a state of belief anyone would REALLY talk about trading Jay.
I would not be surprised at all if we go after Sproles….he would fill a few needs fopr our team in both the run and return game.
Rec’d.

Thanks Body
Crowder – everyone keeps saying he is too small but he was touted as a good3-4 player coming out of the draft (which buggered my thinking as to why we drafted him) He lacks a little bit of size but his technique is what really counts I think Crowder could end up being the only one who stays a DE out of the current bunch
Crowder- NT- Thomas
Ben Hamilton may only be 31 but has a big injury history. I am not saying replace him now but groom a replacement draft one and keep him. We have let more lineman go the past few years than we should have.
Pinnock will be good!
Its hard for me to believe people want Jay gone either they are just stupid I think!
The problem with sproles is I think he gets a franchise tag. That happens he is staying in SD. no one is going to give two 1st rounders for a COP guy! Sproles is going to say he can be an everydown player but we know the truth!

Agreed on Sproles....I hope he is not franchised.
Hope you are right on Crowder.
I totally agree….I wonder regarding the rhinking of drafting Crowder AND Moss when we were a 4-3 team, unless, ultimately down the track, Shanny had his eye on changing to a 3-4.
Guess we will see what Jedi McD comes up with.
I really struggle with giving up on a 1st and 2nd round pick only 2 years into their careers. We are now going to have to be even MORE patient with Moss and Crowder now we are changing schemes again….3 times in 3 years.
Wow!

Sproles
Franchised or not, the word out here is that he’s staying put. However, we know what such statements are good for in the capitalist world…The current thing is nothing. After a massive faux-pas in which AJ Smith seemed to be insulting LDT, they sort of didn’t talk about it in public anymore, which deletes one more source of cheap theatre for me. It looks like LDT will restructure – after two poor season, he’s not a huge thing on the open market.

Shanny had his eye on changing to a 3-4.
I think that was the “Bates Hotel” Experiment. Where wide bodies (Sam Adams the large etc.) check in but the defense doesn’t check out.

Ben Hamilton
Ben Hamilton may only be 31 but has a big injury history
I disagree. Besides the concussion that kept him out of the 2007 season, I don’t think he’s missed a game in hia 7 seasons (that’s not counting 2007). And I think his play on 08 put to rest any lingering doubts about the concussion issue.

If you're referring to Brandon Stokely...
… he’s had a lot of concussions, which is a worry. And why the Broncos need to look ahead at the slot position. But Hamilton has only had the one. Granted, it was very serious, as it cost him a year. But like I said, he came back and had a good year. I’m curious – does anyone know what happened to cause the concussion (Hamilton’s)? I never saw a clip on it – still wondering if it was a freak accident or what. O linemen don’t usually suffer concussions.

After a full season of weekly contests
including his traning camp, we don’t have anything to worry about with regard to Hamilton’s head injury and his other history is limited and not of current concern.
However – if I was Stokely, I’d call in my broker, review my life options and retire from football today. He will have long term, lingering effects from the head injuries. The only real question is how bad and how often, I’m very sad to say. I respect him and love him on our team, yet I wish he’d sit down. Another reason to look at the large young man from Cal Poly…or any other WR. Storkley could be retired on any given play.
