Broncos Release Six
The Broncos on Monday announced the release of the following six players: John Engelberger, Nate Jackson, Niko Koutouvides, Marquand Manuel, DeWayne Robertson and Jamie Winborn.
hat tip to RiG for the news!
Engelberger started six games for the Broncos in 2008, recording 51 tackles, and had spent the previous three seasons with the club. He began his career with the San Francisco 49ers.
2008 was Jackson's fifth year in the NFL, having spent every season with the Broncos. He started three games in place of the injured Tony Scheffler and caught 11 passes before being placed on injured reserve on November 20.
Koutouvides was a first-year Bronco after spending four seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He saw action in 14 games in 2008, playing mostly on special teams.
Manuel was also a first-year Bronco after having played for the Bengals, Seahawks, Packers and Panthers. He started 14 games at strong safety for the Broncos in 2008.
Robertson joined the Broncos via trade with the New York Jets on April 24, 2008 and started 15 games at defensive tackle. He spent the first five years of his career with New York.

Good riddance, all...
except Jackson. I was quite impressed by some of the big catches he made in Scheffler’s absence, but I suppose it’s not that big of a deal – we’re talking about a third-stringer here. I know Winborn’s energy was endearing to many Broncos fans, but I won’t miss his excessive celebrating. He may have seemed something of a leader, but look at what he was leading! Also, Mike Nolan’s arrival spelled certain doom for Jamie. I hope Niko, Robertson and Manuel don’t let the door hit them on their rears as they’re leaving…

Winborn struggled in the 3-4 Nolan installed in SanFran
no surprise Nolan wasn’t interested in seeing him struggle in the 3-4 here. Good luck to him, though.

Not really
There was some kind of personality issue between Nolan and Winborn. Actually, the issue arrived shortly after Winborn had a legendary performance in one game which Dr. Z was attending and wrote about. Whatever the issue, shortly after that Winborn was benched. There was a disagreement and Winborn was told not to come back – period. I never could find out any details, but suffice to say that I wasn’t looking for Jamie to start this year.

I can't really feign surprise.
I think some of these players as well as some from the last round of cuts may find their way back to the roster at much reduced prices. K2 could make an outstanding ST player and provide emergency back-up at linebacker. DRob could be an excellent back-up at NT (I know, he doesn’t like it) if we play a one gap 3-4. He will have to take back-up pay. I doubt if we see Winborn, Jackson or Manual again.

Double-edged was the guillotine that beheaded it...
I was expecting Boss to be cut instead of Winborn. Hopefully, this is a sign Boss’s surgery went well becuase the man is talented. Even if we could get a season full of situational downs out of #97, keeping him around would be worth it.

Not just cap ...
… but cash, as well. Compared to previous years, NFL cash budgets are skimpier than a g-string this year, which we’ve seen with the 49ers, Redskins, Browns and Colts joining the layoff parade that the Broncos began last March. With the Broncos on the hook for Shanahan, the Goodmans, the balance of Slowik’s salary and other coaches who were jettisoned, plus the overall economic woes that almost certainly will affect sponsorships and premium seating sales, their cash budget is likely suffering like everyone else’s.

Sorry to see Jackson go
He always seemed like a hard worker, a team guy, and particularly clutch for a non-starter. But the new era is dawning… I’m sure Kubes will snatch him up.

Wasn't Jackson originally with the 9ers?
Maybe just in their camp or something. I thought he was a Walsh recommendation to Shanny…

Jjackson came to Denver in a trade with SF in 03. He never played a down for SF.

lmao
Yeah, you know, as much as I liked Jackson, he clearly wasn’t as natural for the position as Mssrs. Scheff and Graham. I kinda rooted for him because of the whole converted receiver thing. Sharpe has me pulling for that profile I guess.

Not really surprised by any of the names either,
however it is interesting that three of the players came from other teams (that didn’t want them either).
Get rid of any excess baggage and keep the players that we can move forward with.

Paymah is a free agent.
They don’t need to do anything with him. I expect the team to see who they get in FA and the draft, then they may give him a min offer and invite him to camp, or not.

The only surprise
is how much money this team has tied up in such a horrible defense.
From the RMN:
Dewayne Robertson and his $16 million salary-cap figure.
The Broncos will have no difficulty being under the league- mandated salary cap of $123 million per team when free agency opens and the new league year begins Feb. 27, but Xanders had said earlier Monday there would be a long look at how that salary- cap money is allocated.
The Broncos had 18 players set to count more than $1 million each against the cap for the 2009 season when the day started. Ten of those players were on defense, a unit that ranked at, or near the bottom of, every major defensive category in last season’s 8-8 finish.
That, in a nutshell my friends, is why Shanahan is no longer a Bronco.
