Yes, I'm a Diamondback and Suns fan. So you may be wondering, "Why does this fool like the Broncos so much?"

As I posted elsewhere...

this is not a cap space saving move. It leads me to believe the Broncos have decided to use their available cap space to clean house for the future. It’s a gutsy move and likely to cost us in 2009 but pay rich dividends in 2010 and beyond.

I was right there with you...

I didn’t think they would take the cap hit on Bly. I was wrong on Spags, Goodmans, and now Bly. I am going to shut up and go with the flow. (At least until FA. lol) ;~)

There is a plan. I am convinced now.

It might mean this year is painful. But after years of getting by with temporary solutions, the Broncos are building towards something substantial, and something that can last. And the best part is, the team really isn’t getting any worse. Just younger, in all likelihood.

by Holden Caulfield on Feb 17, 2009 6:24 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Bly was the most overrated CB in the game, his coverage was terrible and honestly I doubt this move will affect the defense in 2009.

But hey, the Lions are now free to resign him.

by JDub15 on Feb 17, 2009 6:48 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

i wouldnt say overrated but...

he needs to be used in certain ways. He is a ball hawk who takes chances a lot and without adequate safety he looks terrible. I predict Oakland will sign him to a 10 year 150 million contract with a 5 year player option worth 75 million.

No one should be safe on that defense. I don’t honestly care if they go totally young on that side of the ball because at least then they’d have some semblance of an excuse for how they have been stinking it up.

Bly isn’t versatile and to use him correctly you pigeon-hole a safety. Given what McDaniels has said about flexible smart football it is easy to see why Bly was cut. (I still think he is a good CB if used properly though)

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

this is different....

We are not parting says with the most dominant young DE in the game as the Chiefs did when getting rid of Allen… We are dropped a washed up corner who played a gambling style of defense that sometimes lead to INTs but overall he was very poor in coverage.

We'd likely get a second round pick for him....

..Bailey is the wrong side of 30, he has started slowing down and is now getting injured. Noone is going to part a 1st round pick. Such thinking is fine in Madden 09 but not in the real world.

Let’s keep him till his contract runs out then reevaluate. We have plenty of cap room to go and get some solid FA’s in the meantime so there is no need to throw away a Pro Bowl corner.

I'd take an early 2nd rounder for him....and maybe a 3rd in 2010 that could turn into a second based on his play

It’s the same as when we cut ties with Wiegman (hurts), Law, Welbourn, Allen, napoleon harris, kawika mitchell. lawrence tynes…so don’t tell me its not the same. Your defense will be better but you will have growing pains, that’s all i’m saying.

I’m all for trimming dead weight (which I don’t think Bly is) if it saves on cap space, but this reeks of hubris. I do hope we don’t regret it.

I agree.

And clearly this isn’t a minor tweak to the D. This is a wholesale, top-to-bottom realignment. A sea change one decade in the making. So, apart from the deadwood, it’s also inevitable that a few very good players won’t be back. That’s the tragic part of where we have gotten ourselves with our inconsistent D. I’ll be interested to see who they pick up to replace Dre and under what terms.

CB in 1st?

I’m surprised too. Someone obviously leaked the move to Mr. Bill. I assume Jenkins is now a very viable option if he lasts to #12 and Vontae Davis is a possibility. In the 2nd, Sean Smith, Alphonso Smith, DJ Moore, Jarius Byrd, Darius Butler and Victor Harris are probably now options if available. Man has it been hard to find good CB’s. Remember Dale Carter, Willie Middlebrooks, Deltha O’Neal…. All I can say is RIP Darrent – you’re still missed.

bly wasn't the problem

There are 3 reasons bly looked bad

1. he is a risk taker - sometimes took bad risks

2. QB had no pressure - all the time in the world to throw.

3. QB never threw toward Champ, which meant Bly was getting the majority of the targets. I don’t care how good you are when you are getting targeted that many times you will break down.

I personally thought our defense played better when Champ was injured. The defense didn’t take for granted that the QB wouldn’t throw toward champ and Bly wasn’t being worn down.

Probably in the minority thinking we should trade Champ for a great pass rush and sign a decent CB.

But I can’t get over the one-button mouse. Is Apple just being stubborn? What is with that? I wouldn’t think it is more efficient to have fewer buttons…

Between that and the lack of compatible programs (though booting to Windows fixes the second part to an extent) I’ve just never been all that impressed with Macs. Then again, I’m still on XP so I may not have had as bad a Windows experience as other people…

If you want to spend $1500 – $2000 go get a Mac. If you give it a chance you will enjoy it.

If you want to spend $300 – $500 go get a pc and throw Ubuntu on it (Linux). It is easy to use and install (linux isn’t nearly as tech-complicated as it used to be). If you give it a chance you will enjoy it…and it is free. So is software for it. :)

Forgot to mention

Ubuntu will install on your computer and set up a “dual-boot” system where you keep Windows and can choose during boot-up what to load. It is a great way to try out Linux.

If you ultimately decide you don’t want the linux part of things, you can just pop your XP disk in and run a “repair” to go back to booting regularly.

If you decide to try this out and have any questions, I’d be glad to get you my email and help out in any way I can.

Ubuntu is a Linux distribution

I use Mandriva. There’s also Fedora and SUSE, to name some of the major distros. Each uses the Linux kernel (the core of the operating system) plus a set of utilities (programs that do basic “housekeeping” chores) plus a set of proprietary tools (installer, configuration, system administration) plus applications (such Open Office). All Linux distros have access to the same pool of open source applications, of which there are several for each task (for instance a number of different music playing aps). When you install you decide which ones you want to use, or you can install them all and play with them to see which you like best.

good old linux

if your not familiar with linux, ubuntu is one of the easier ones. Suse is pretty good.

then you also got mandrake and redhat, but theres a slight learning curve to some of the features.

but ubuntu is definitely becoming the linux of choice for most users. you can even get a port of HPs little shell for ubuntu, which lays out everything.

Two great things about this linux distro:

1) Easy to use for people new to linux

2) Has hands-down THE best support community out there. The ubuntu forums usually have answers to any questions you have before you ask them and people who use it typically seem more kind and helpful when asked about it. (See my above offer to Steve)

Stupid enter key

I think its because the users of ubuntu have come from a more overall demographic. new to linux, linux gurus, mid lvl linux peeps, etc, whereas most of the linux distros are seemingly geared more towards the hard core geek.

And you know I used to dual boot with the intention of using linux more most things, and windows for when windows is needed. It worked great for about a week, then I just found myself not going to the linux side for much of anything… Guess I got tired of rebooting, or just too lazy. Leaning towards the later.

I'll back your friend on that

Whatever hype your friend is giving you about that Mac having great multimedia software is true. That is where they excel for sure.

My only caution to you is to get a really clear picture of what you will need to buy because it can get expensive if you use some of the “professional” software packages out there that cost hundreds of dollars.

It isn’t that linux can’t do multimedia, it is just much more easy on a mac typically.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I get large fonts both in Firefox and Opera

albeit in the different font styles specified in my settings. It could be trumanj‘s computer or browser is calling for a larger than 9-point minimum font size. A site I just checked out – here – has this interesting and perhaps relevant comment: “In cases where the specified length cannot be supported, user agents must approximate it in the actual value.” Mine is supplying a larger value, perhaps because that’s the minimum being asked for, whereas firstfan’s browser and/or computer apparently is just throwing up its hands.

I think the Broncos have realized you have to start up front with the backers and dlinemen on defense

and a good pass rusher makes an okay corner look like a stud. That said, I would not be suprised if we trade Bailey and acquire 2 first round picks and take 2 LB’s. Still, I think this is only the tip of the iceberg.

OT: Michael Vick for backup QB? Just saying…some playmaking options there.

McDaniels was the best option for this team. You CAN NOT overfocus on the defense and possibley have Jeremy Bates not progress with Cutler. McDaniels will watch over both sides of the ball, especially the O, while letting a defensive guy handle the D along with an intelligent GM.

I think Bly's downfall was that he couldn't tackle well

The first step to improving your defense is starting from the very beginning. Step 1 is who can tackle and who can’t. The tape of Carolina game was probabley running and Xanders and McDaniel saw Steve Smith dragging Bly 3 yards down field for an important first down and said “What the @#$!…sorry Dre you gotta go”.

First Thing I've Seen that is 100 Percent Correct

He is by far the worse tackler on the team. I will never forget the punt return that he could’ve gone an additional 5 yards if he had just taken the hit…but instead…he pranced out of bounds. He could’ve even gotten 4 more yards and still not gotten hit.

i think they are taking a very gutsy path...

it looks like the Broncos are clearing out everyone who doesn’t fit their plan or who they feel is overpaid in order to make way for new players (FA or draft picks) who do fit the plan. It may be a bumpy path but I expect by 2010 we will be seeing the benefits. and 2009 may not be that bad. at least the players should fit the schemes. I always thought it was crazy to keep playing Bly and not give him safety help. That’s like asking Jake to suddenly become Joe Montana

The end of Shanny's corner crush

Remember when Shanny became … well, obsessed with cornerbacks? If I remember right, it started with his move in the late 90s to cut the corners who took us to the SB and acquire guys like Dale Carter and Deltha O’Neill. Back then, we actually did have a bit of a pass rush, thanks to Neil Smith, Trevor Pryce, Romo, Wilson, etc… echoing broncodude’s comment above, you can’t really count on stud corners (yes, I do believe Dre was a stud corner, despite the criticism I’ve been seeing from some) without a pass rush…

So yes this certainly does seem to signal a major shift in emphasis on D. Getting Aso would be a coup, but I suspect we’re going to be seeing something else based on a completely new set of assumptions. The corner infatuation may have left with Shanny and the Gs…

I think a lot of his shared his frustration for that

And I think Manning’s stock rose even higher after that game.

And as much as I detest doing it, one need go no further than mention Phyllis Rivers’ success attacking Bailey as evidence that one has to have a freakin’ pass rush and decent safeties for even a stud like Champ to do his best work, injuries be damned.

why not? he’s getting older but still has value NOW he won’t in 2 years. Since its a rebuilding year why not get a pick for him and find someone that we can groom for the future?

by trumanj on Feb 17, 2009 9:34 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I will try to tackle the why not

Champ’s value has declined and he probably won’t fetch what you need to make it worth it. What is his worth…well if the Broncos trade Champ the remaining 4 millionish that he has remaining on his bonus so you will be taking a 4 million dollar cap hit. Plus he has a base salary of 8 millionish that another team has to accept. Couple this with the fact that he is coming off two injuries, his elbow and groin and he still really hasn’t lived out his dream of playing with Boss due to injuries…so he may not want to leave.

What is a more sound strategy in my opinion is to sit down and ask him if he is willing to restructure in order to help the team. If he says no, I live with it. The hole that he creates by vacating the Cornerback Depth Chart for the Broncos right now just isn’t worth it. Champ was playing at a fine level before injuries. His sack on Griese was important in a clutch win. We all know he can’t do anything about covering a Gazzelle for a long period of time with no help from the D Line or over the top help with the safeties….bring in the talent and you will remember how good Mr. Champ Bailey is….HOF Baby!

Just my two cents.

I"ve been thinking that for awhile...

that and why we kept throwing those stupid laterals…we had a LOT of bad play calling for such a stellar offense.

by trumanj on Feb 17, 2009 9:37 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I'd guess it was the lack of a running game

The bootleg is predicated on play action. You can’t get outside if the ‘backers don’t bite on the run action. As for the WR screens you refer to, I’d guess it was the same reason – the thinking being that you get someone like BMarsh or Eddie Royal in space and see if he can get you a few yards.

Obviously, it didn’t work too well, but I can at least see the rationale behind those calls. The problem is that the D just played up on the receivers and dropped the safeties, and without any running game we couldn’t make them pay…

by hai17 on Feb 17, 2009 11:12 PM MST up reply actions   0 recs

That is my guess too hai17

But one area of improvement for Cutler is “selling” the fake. He just sort of goes thru the motion. Watch Manning some time. He fakes out camera men a couple of times a game. Elway was good at that also.

Cannot say I am that pleased abotu this...

Why cut a guy who hits the cap harder this year than he would if he were on the team? It’s not like Paymah/JMFW/Bell are the next Big Thing. Plus Marshall has talked about his locker room leadership – and he isn’t that bad. Last season he had a game saving stop of Thigpen on 4th down at the 1, and a huge forced fumble in the Browns game. When the starters went down, I thought he stepped up.

Last offseason I surmised that Bly would make a killer ball hawk of a nickel back. Why not keep him around for leadership and some picks out the nickel, and cut him when he cap hit is less atrocious when cutting him?

by jonahsilas on Feb 17, 2009 10:55 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Sunk Costs - "throwing good money after bad"

Bly’s release is a mild surprise but it shouldn’t be, once it’s “framed” properly. The disincentive that made it seemingly cheaper to keep him than release him didn’t deter the Broncos, and it’s a credit to them.

It’s expensive to cut Bly but it can be even more expensive to throw good money after bad, and keeping Bly at 6.8 million didn’t make sense given his and the team’s performance. I wasn’t as down on Bly as some people but I didn’t view him as worth that much money. So, it was better to cut our losses now and avoid the cognitive trap that makes spending too much look like saving money.

Segueing into my favorite topic — the draft — I was having a hard time figuring out what to do about CB this year. It was a real puzzle. The only thing standing in the way of taking a CB in a pretty deep crop was the fact that we already had some. That’s no longer an obstacle.

by Colinski on Feb 17, 2009 10:56 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

Whatever anybody has to say about the lack of pressure from the front seven effecting Bly’s performance, he has significantly underachieved in his time in Denver. Last year he just looked bad…constantly. I’m happy they made this move and I think that it will ultimately improve our secondary.

Again, if I’m correct, Mike S. didn’t always play the best. And, it’s embarrassing when a fellow off the PS outperforms a ‘pro bowl’ corner. We might need another corner, but we probably won’t set down after a game and say, “Gosh I miss Bly”..

steve o is right about champ

the pros dont outweigh the cons to trade him, we cant get what he’s worth back. we might, might get a second from a contender which means late second. more likely a late third. he is a leader by example and were about to be a young secondary. plus champs the best corner since rod woodson (that includes dion) and has 3 or 4 more years of effective football.hopefully he’ll restructure next year.

Never lived up to potential

I was excited when Bly first came in (as I’m sure many of you were). The thought of “the Killer B’s” had me excited. I didn’t care that Bly was overrated, he was still a #1 corner from another team playing opposite Champ. It was a coaches dream come true.

Unfortunately, all that it really taught us is how hard it is to cover WR in the NFL when your thrown at every down and have to cover for 4+ seconds because there’s no pass rush.

I’m pretty forgiving and was willing to give Bly a pass cause that’s a tough situation to be in, but now that he’s gone the lasting image in my head is Dre getting burning for 85 and a TD in overtime against Green Bay.

by jwkcsu on Feb 17, 2009 11:25 PM MST reply actions   0 recs

You know...

I was very excited when he came to Denver. But at one point I read a post by a Lions fan stating that He was very prone to giving up the big play on double move routes. I thought that it was just a lions fan being bitter, but always remembered what he said.

Time proved the Lions fan right. Replay after replay showed my fear of Dre Bly. He had some really good plays too, but I always thought we needed a little less risky corner. If our pass rush was better, who knows. But it is what it is, and now we are in search of a CB.

Styg50 is right, I would love to see Brain Dawkins in Denver. He would be very useful in so many ways.

I didn’t even notice this at first.

Broncos are not expected to re-sign defensive lineman Ebenezer Ekuban, safety Marlon McCree, or middle linebacker Nate Webster, who will become free agents Feb. 27.

I had wondered whether Ekuban would fit into a 3-4, but news reports citing professional scouts said that we did not. I don’t think anyone is surprised that we’re apparently not re-signing the others.

Mc D Cleans House

I spent most of January wishing for the D to be blown up, so I’m loving the cuts and McD’s willingness to take short term hits to free up long term roster spots.

Obviously FA and the draft have yet to happen, but McD has a plan, and right now I’m actually feeling much better about our prospects for the 2009 season than I did about the 2008 season at the same point last year.

Foxy

If ATL resigns him, Denvers 7th rounder they got for him goes to a 6th. I would rather not get him back…I was among those calling him fox-worthless. I would much see Dunta Robinson if we go FA. I’m actually alright with just letting Josh Bell play there. Now, trading Champ, the only leader left on the defense, we can count on a bunch of young guys running around blindly. Draft BJ Raji, sign Olshanski from SD and we will have a solid front 7. Igor Olshanski, BJ Raji, Marcus Thomas on the line. Doom/Moss, DJW, Larson, Boss at LB. That should work wonders for the defense, and for sure improve the pass rush. Doom could live in the backfield without being doubled every play. That in turn would make the secondary after we draft Jairus Byrd or Louis Delmas in the 2nd
