Elway: Bleacher Report attack part 2
I was on Bleacher Report today, and someone posted an article about Elway and why he doesn't get the same criticism as Brett Favre:
What do the idiots that write on this site have against him? They keep talking about how he was as much of an INT machine that Favre was. That isn't really accurate. People, and we have talked about this over and over, don't realize how Dan Reeves' system handicapped him.

I would like to play a game too...
I would like to see Joe public name 1 WR Elway had prior to Rod and Easy Ed. It says a little something about the man when he didn’t really have weapons until ’96. So yea, I think he did pretty good.
lol, then i read the article...

You dont count
Ha, I know all us die-hard Broncos fans can name the receivers. I was just saying, I would be very impressed if somebody that didn’t follow the Broncos can name 1 receiver.
To compare: I don’t follow the Pack at all, but I remember Favre throwing to Sterling Sharpe, Antonio Freeman, Robert Brooks. I just think overall, Elway had less to work with in his early years, and still put up the numbers.
Ten_fiver....this is from an old SI article written in 1996
“So far in Elway’s career, his offensive linemen and wide receivers have been voted to the Pro Bowl a combined six times. In Dan Marino’s 14 seasons, Miami Dolphins offensive linemen and wide receivers have been selected to the Pro Bowl 30 times. More than any athlete since Wilt Chamberlain on the Philadelphia and San Francisco Warriors of the late 1950s and early ‘60s, Elway has had to play at a superb level game after game, year after year, to make his team a winner. Though usually surrounded by a human rummage sale, Elway has won more games as a starter than any other quarterback in NFL history (126). It’s the equivalent of carving Mount Rushmore with a spoon or composing Beethoven’s Ninth on a kazoo.”
"I am not trying to start anything I am just saying that i think if you take Knowshon and draft D later you guys will be hella good next year" ...IamtheGreatest - The smartest Chiefs fan I ever had the priviledge of reading!
Let's take this thought experiment further...
Criticism over their Careers
I think it’s safe to say that Favre has enjoyed being the media darling of the MSM for the majority of his career. Elway, though respected and given ample praise by those who knew football, was constantly criticized for failing to win the big game until 97-99. I have no doubt that if Brett had to deal with the media criticism and scorn John did, we would’ve seen more pouting from #4 and not nearly the resolve that John displayed.
The Numbers Game
I think baseball has hard-wired us to overly stress the importance of statistical performance over a better assessment of a player that accounts for: wins, surrounding talent, offensive/defensive scheme, coaching, injuries, etc. Of course the latter takes real analysis and effort. The former takes a quick “cut & paste” from the NFL stats book. Futhermore, it’s difficult to compare numbers against players from different eras. To make my point, I had to laugh this season when the talking heads were praising Brees as he chased Marino’s passing yardage record. What they failed to point out is that the rules have significantly changed since Dan played, thus making it easier for these old records to fall. Not trying to take anything away from Bress, but you’re comparing apples to orangaes IMO. And another point, what the hell does it matter if you throw for 10,000 yards in a season and still fail to make the playoffs? Whoop-de-doo!
That being said, Elway’s numbers will pale in comparison to many QBs. Fact is, though, he won and more importantly won when it matter with very little talent around him. Again, if all things being equal, who do you draft #1 overall if John and Brett were 24 and coming out of college this year? Exactly….
IMO humble opinion, the only QBs I’ll debate QB greatness over against John are Montana, Moon, and Marino. I’m biased and will always argue for John, but I’ll at least listen to others debate the greatness of those other QBs. As for present day QBs, the only one I’ll even discuss is Brady.
Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.
John C. Calhoun --
Favre love affair
Brett winning the SB in 96 is why he escaped the media criticism. It was still early in his career.
Eventually, you just reach the point where you realize that anyone who plays for the Broncos is handicapped by not being on the east coast. As much as I hate the cliche, it is what it is. It’s always been that way and it’ll always be that way. Only Bronco fans will ever realize the greatness of Floyd Little, Randy Gradishar, Terrell Davis, Shannon Sharpe, Tom Nalen, and, yes, even John Elway.

+2, you said it.
John Elway is far better than Favre and if someone can’t see that then they never watched football and have no idea what they are talking about. This guys loves to talk about stats, then here is the best one of all.
Super Bowl Rings:
Elway 2
Favre 1 and lost to Elway in the SB.

Cutler's 4th qtr/OT game winning drives: 9
This kid
Yeah, I don’t think this kid watched Elway. Another fan attacked him for it. I think that he is only about 18 years old. I don’t know why he would be saying anything about Elway.
Never diss the John...
Yes, I'm a Diamondback and Suns fan. So you may be wondering, "Why does this fool like the Broncos so much?"
A: The Cardinals are too hard of a pill to swallow. Oh yeah and that Elway dude....
