Jarron Gilbert, freak of nature or next work out wonder bust?
I don't know how much people have been paying attention to this cat (DE/DT Jarron Gilbert, 6' 5", 280 lbs, San Jose State), but cruising youtube I have been amazed at some of the videos as seen here
But his combine numbers are also staggering 40 yd dash 4.87 sec, broad jump 9' 11", bench 28 reps at 225lbs (which may seem average until you consider he has a big wing span and is not short stocky arms), vertical jump 35 1/2" which is better than a lot of WR and DB. Simply put, this guy is probably the physically most gifted 3-4 DE in the draft (IMO), but then we start looking at the stats and I get confused.
2008 : 52 Tackles, 22.0 TFLs, 9.5 Sacks, 3 Passes Defensed, 2 Forced Fumbles
2007: 49 Tackles, 7.5 TFLs, 4.0 Sacks, 4 Passes Defensed, 1 Forced Fumble
How is this guy not considered a 1st round pick, though his stats seem impressive, he really only had one very good year, and one good year and the level of his competition was somewhat below standard D-1 teams. I am wondering if this would be a player Denver targets as a 3-4 end by trading back with someone like Philly or Baltimore. The guy looks like a Trevor Pryce clone, and may be the best 3-4 lineman available. But he may also be one of these workout wonders who looks great in shorts but can't play on Sundays, thoughts?

Trade down with Lions or Eagles
Trade down and draft the best corner available. With the extra pick (2nd) get a LB I like Frantz Joseph or best available. This draft is deep at LB and 3-4 Ends or convert DT to Ends, use the other 2nd on a NT like Ron Brace. I wouldn’t go higher than 3rd RD. Just my opinion.
The only difference between insanity and genius is perception.
We could get him in the second easily.
He might last all the way to the third. I don’t think it matters if we get Raji, Maualuga, Tyson Jackson, or whoever in the first round. Dude’s a beast and you can NEVER have enough serviceable bodies on the D-line.
I think Ziggy Hood would be a better long-term 3-4 end (he’s a better run stuffer) but it looks like this guy has the talent to terrorize QB’s from a down end position or even at OLB. If Hood is gone in the second, I think we should look long and hard at this guy.
OK, I've started having dreams about the draft. Is that bad? A couple of weeks ago, I dreamed that we traded down to the #18 pick and drafted Chris Wells. (Zappa was pissed off.) Then last night I dreamed that we passed on Knowshon Moreno to get Maualuga, and Knowshon went to the Chargers. (Zappa was pissed off again.) Is it worse that I'm dreaming about the draft, or that I'm dreaming about Zappa?
I like Hood, but this guys workout numbers really amazed me
So similar to Trevor Pryce, I really am torn, but I don’t think he would last much past the 1st half of the second round.

He has been moving up
He has slowly been moving up but has been rated so low initially because he went to san jose state (who??) at the end of the college season no one had heard of him until the East-west game. I like him but not in the first round
Trade Down
Order of priority:
NT, FS/CB, SS, RB, LB, OL, WR
where he goes
I was writing about the guy back in December, when his suggested range was around 4-5, so it’s very hard to see him as being a 1st rounder, although the 2 round rise to a 2-3 isn’t too much of a stretch given his fit in a 3-4 and his combination of metrics.
He’ looks to me like a developing player with a bull rush — which I like — but I doubt he’d be my pick in the 2nd, and the 3rd might not work either. I liked him as a lower pick but the price is a little too steep and there’s other players I might like more, such as — Ziggy Hood in the 2nd, and I’d certainly be happy with a Moala or Magee in the 3rd, or perhaps a Walker. Or even more likely, a FA. The most likely scenario is a pick at another position.
San Jose St. moved him inside last year and that’s when he took off, so L-DE in the 3-4 is a good position for him, although he’s hardly a refined pass rusher.
PS — here’s my sleeper pick: Zach Potter. I’d feel more comfortable taking him in the late rounds and saving the high picks for less risky picks.
Why take him in any round?
but signing him in CFA wouldn’t be bad…with only one year of tape, he will probably be passed over until after the draft…
Hmmm, wonder why you like him so much…
Zach Potter gave himself a little homework project. Armed with membership to an NFL draft site and information he pulled off NFL.com, Potter researched how defensive linemen his size had tested at the past three NFL Combines. He also averaged the figures by all defensive ends and tackles from 2008. “It’s out there if you actually want to find out,” Potter said Tuesday. “Some of it was boredom, some of it killing time, some of it goal-setting. "I just like to be organized and research things. Wikipedia and Google are two of my favorite sites. To me, that’s kind of a fun thing.” Of greater importance: Potter liked what he discovered. The former Nebraska defensive end believes that his testing results at the NFL Combine will stack up favorably. Potter and five of his former Nebraska teammates will be going before NFL personnel for testing, examinations and interviews as the annual combine starts today in Indianapolis. “Obviously there are some guys that are just freakish and you can’t compare and they might throw off the averages a little bit,” Potter said. "But looking at most guys my size in the past, I think I can compete or do better.
