MHR Free Agency Open Thread--Part 2

Not a lot going on but still lots to talk about.  So possibly signing two new RBs?  Very interesting opening salvo.  Here's the details at this point:

Appearing on ESPN early Friday, free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh named the Giants, Seahawks, Eagles, and Vikings as teams he’d be interested in playing for.
Houshmandzadeh singled out Minnesota, noting the single teams he’d see with Adrian Peterson in the backfield. He’d supplant Sidney Rice as a starter.

In addition to G/C Jason Brown, the Rams have scheduled a free agent visit with LB Bart Scott.
Scott would play MIKE linebacker in St. Louis and allow the Rams to kick Will Witherspoon to the weak side, which is considered his strongest position. The Rams aren’t overflowing with salary cap space, but can offer Scott a more glorified role than he ever played in Baltimore.

From the Fish

Wikipedia sez (re: 2008): During training camp, Hill initially lost his job to recently signed free agent Chris Crocker. Eventually, though the secondary was exposed during the first two weeks particuarly in Week 2 against the Arizona Cardinals, giving up pass plays of 50 or more yards. In Week 3, Hill got the free safety job once again, and it paid huge dividends as the secondary play became more solid and it also helped Miami earn its first victory of the season against the Patriots. Renaldo Hill also proved to be solid in run support, finishing with 74 tackles. He nabbed three interceptions. He is a free agent in the 2009 offseason and it has yet to be seen whether or not the Dolphins will re-sign him.

In 2006

he started all 16 games for the Dolphins in 2006 and finished third on the team (behind linebackers Zach Thomas and Channing Crowder) with 83 tackles. Hill also had two interceptions, which tied him with Jason Taylor for the team lead, and a fumble recovery he returned for a touchdown. Hill picked off Detroit Lions quarterback Jon Kitna and Chicago Bears quarterback Rex Grossman during the season (both in wins by the Dolphins). He also returned a Chester Taylor fumble forced by Matt Roth 48 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter of a 24-20 win over the Minnesota Vikings.

Buckhalter is interesting

The line out of Philly is that he will compete for a starting job. 6’0, 217. He was a 4th round choice in 2001 and has a history of knee injuries. He has relatively low miles (Career 74 gms 476att. 2155yds 4.5ypc). But with 85 receptions for 930 yds.,and a 10.9 ypc., he’s worth a flier if the knees check out.

Renaldo HIll --> according to ESPN INSIDER (5'11" 205)

Grade 61 (average starter)

Comment: Hill is an undersized safety who has good athleticism. He had been a durable player prior to 2007, when he had a season-ending injury. He is a hard-nosed player who is active and fills the alley quickly. He is an athletic player who keeps leverage with body control, technique and instincts. He uses his hands well to stay active to the pile. Hill is a smart player who is versatile to line up in the box, off the hash or as a nickel defender. He is best in combination-man or zone schemes, but may be a liability in pure man coverage. He runs well, but is an explosive athlete who can make up ground when out of position. He reacts well to break points and maintains leverage on receivers with a solid peddle and confidence in his short-area quickness. He is a competitive player who will square up in a crease, but isn’t as physical as many safeties in the league. He brings depth and versatility to the Dolphins’ secondary.

Rotoworld

Updating a previous item, FOXSports’ Alex Marvez reports that the Broncos are expected to sign both Correll Buckhalter and J.J. Arrington after they pass their physicals on Friday.

The Broncos are going to use a backfield committee under Josh McDaniels, just like he employed in New England. Neither signing is very inspiring, but this probably takes Denver out of the running for free agent Derrick Ward. Marvez calls Buckhalter, 30, “a front-runner for a starting spot.”

JJ Arrington

Interesting fella. He was arrested in June of 08 after a fist fight. However, he’s a three way threat – running, receiving and returns.

• A second-round draft pick (44th overall) in 2005 out of the University of California; has appeared in 47 career games as a running back and kick returner in his first three seasons.
• Led all Arizona running backs in 2007 with 29 catches for 241 yards, recording the first receiving touchdown of his career vs. Atlanta on 12/23.
• In 2006, became the first Cardinal since 2003 (Josh Scobey, 9/28 at StL) to return a kickoff for a TD when he took the opening kickoff 99 yards at Minnesota on 11/26. It was just the second TD on the return of an opening kickoff in franchise history (Roy Shivers, 9/25/66).
• His 220 kickoff return yards at Minnesota in 2006 were the second-most in team history (252, Josh Scobey, 9/28/03 at StL) and his 1,520 kickoff return yards marked the third-highest single-season total in team history.
• Was the nation’s top rusher in terms of yardage (2,018) and yards/carry (7.0) in his senior year at Cal.

Might be worth the look

5’9 212. Kind of a bowling ball with good hands. 29 more receptions last year – they didn’t use him much as a RB, more as a receiver out of the backfield, which fits McD’s NE MO.

Matt Mosely is reporting

Canty’s not a good fit for Redskins
February 27, 2009 1:23 AM
Posted by ESPN.com’s Matt Mosley

 Canty
There are a couple of reports out there suggesting the Redskins will make a play for Dallas Cowboys defensive end Chris Canty. He’s a guy who’s been playing in a 3-4 scheme ever since he came out of the University of Virginia, and I think he’d be a poor fit for the Redskins.

This is a club that desperately needs to improve its pass rush (28th in the league in sacks). Canty is a versatile guy who can move inside in the nickel and do a nice job. He’s also decent against the run. But he’s another guy who might have six or seven sacks a game at the most.

The Redskins already have players like Canty. Andre Carter is a similar player who can stand up and block some passes from the line of scrimmage. The Redskins need players who will scare quarterbacks. Canty’s not one of those guys.

That said, he’s a great character and a guy who can help against the run. I just don’t think he’s the kind of guy you want to commit $17 million to. And that’s what he’s going to want. He’d be a much better fit with the Dolphins.

by gnarlybroncodude on Feb 26, 2009 11:43 PM MST reply actions

One interesting thing about Hill

Is that McD knows him well, having game planned against him twice year for the last three years. It looks like he was injured in 2007, or at any rate started only seven games, but 2008 and 2006 were reasonably good years for him.

Free agent S Renaldo Hill will visit the Broncos on Friday.

Denver went through its fair share of middling safeties under Mike Shanahan and Hill would be another. He became expendable in Miami when the Dolphins added Gibril Wilson. Hill started 16 games last year and made 77 stops.

Looks like it was an injury for Hill in 07

From gridironfans.com, 10.21.07:

Dolphins safety Renaldo Hill was helped to the sideline after injuring his leg on a jump ball in the end zone. Randy Moss caught the touchdown pass, and as Hill came down he appeared to hyperextend his knee. He was supported by two trainers as he made his way to the sideline. We’ll update as we know more, but a serious injury would leave the Dolphins extremely thin at safety.

I never said

comment has to be positive, and i am not trying to be the negativity police; however there is a lot more negative comments then positive ones and it is highly annoying. The fact that you say it is Risky to have two 32 years old running the show is an ignorant comment. Any first time head coach of GM is a RISK regardless of their age. They would both not be in their respective positions if Pat Bowlen did not think they could get the job done. Also if we have learned anything over the last 2 month is Pat Bowlen has taken back the control of his Team. Mcdaniels and Xanders report Directly to Bowlen. Bowlen is making all the FINAL decisions. Since Bowlen makes the Final decisions you logic that Mcxanders can do any long term damange has no basis.

I never said people were not entitled to their opinions and I never attacked you. It is in fact the opposite. You attacked me by telling me to cool it and calling me a Douchebag. Now you have your opinion but it is obvious that you did not put much thought behind it since it is obvious that Bowlen now holds all the power.

Now if you were offended in any way for that I am sorry because that was not my goal. This is a blog and everyone should be able to state their mind

You were not trying to help

I was trying to be the bigger man but since you could not just let it go. You have to have the last say with “at lease you know you’re wrong”. I never said i was wrong because I am not. Obviously you are very immature and do not know how to act like a grown up and let things go. It is also obvious that you do not know how to have and intelligent conversation and back up your opinions. I am fine with you having an opinion as long as you can back it up, which you cannot.

Also no one on here but you cares if you spell it “its” of “it’s”. Now I am really done talking with you because you are not worth the time of day.

Spelling does indeed matter. Like it or not, everyone who reads your comments assesses your intelligence based on your spelling, punctuation, and clarity.

Most of us are willing to overlook the occasional spelling mistake; however, an eight word post with no punctuation and a spelling error does not bode well for you my friend. Also, when spelling errors are a regular occurrence, as in your case, readers simply assume you are lazy and simpleminded.

Also, am I the only one who LOVES our running back signings so far? Aarington will be a good change of pace guy / return kickoffs (averaged over 25 yds last year). He has tons of upside and I think Bobby Turner can coach him up. Buckhalter is just a stud and if you look at his Y/P/C, he is a really productive back that was stuck behind Westbrook.

he has some speed but he is a big WR like marshall. A 3 WR set with Marshall, Clayton and Eddie would do a lot of damage

by gnarlybroncodude on Feb 27, 2009 12:30 AM MST up reply actions

Clayton...

I do like that idea if we can pry him away. That would give us 2 big receivers on the outside with Royal playing the Wes Welker role in that NE style offense. I’m thinking Cutler could put up 6k yards.

I like Igor

Like you said, mean and fits the system. I don’t think he would be coming in racking up 10 sacks, but he would be an improvement. Kinda see him as a similar player as Bret Keisel from the Steelers

interesting tidbit

a guy on Espn said one of the biggest impact free agents signings could be Ray McDonald. He said “hypothetically” he could go to Denver and would immediately make an impact.

by A.J. Haefele on Feb 27, 2009 1:39 AM MST reply actions

yea,

But IMHO he doesnt have the size to play NT. I think he could develop into a stud 3-4 end though. But not sure about NT

by ten_fiver on Feb 27, 2009 1:41 AM MST reply actions

me too

Just not sure how he could carry it on his frame. He’s built a lot like Marcus Thomas. Worth a shot though

by ten_fiver on Feb 27, 2009 1:42 AM MST up reply actions

didnt know that

then he would be great. He’s more of a tie up blockers DT, so I think his style would translate to NT perfectly if he could get some more beef on him.

Snippet about Ronald Fields

RON FIELDS, San Francisco — Excellent power player and if a team wants to run a 3-4, he is the perfect player. He will make a ton of money in the market.

Ray Lewis

The Baltimore Sun believes that Denver could be a more likely destination for free agent Ray Lewis than the Jets or Cowboys.

Lewis had a strong relationship with new Broncos DC Mike Nolan when the two were in Baltimore. Denver is also letting incumbent MLB Nate Webster go. Lewis is thought to have turned down a three-year, $25M offer from the Ravens.

by Tdrizz3 on Feb 27, 2009 1:44 AM MST reply actions

hmmmm....

I’ll have to digest that idea for a bit

by ten_fiver on Feb 27, 2009 1:45 AM MST up reply actions

I would be down

for Lewis to come in to denver! i think he still has a few years in him and he is a leader on the field

by Tdrizz3 on Feb 27, 2009 1:47 AM MST reply actions

I could live with it...

I would still like to see an ILB drafted. So if Ray could be around to bring up the draft pick and possibly Spencer Larson, it might be a good thing.

by ten_fiver on Feb 27, 2009 1:48 AM MST up reply actions

then why would

he wanna play for the cowboys? or the jets? or re sign with the ravens? they all run 3 4s

by Tdrizz3 on Feb 27, 2009 1:49 AM MST reply actions

Ray Lewis
Broncos

This is the team that has stayed under the radar with Lewis. But there are strong signs Denver could make a run at him.

New Broncos defensive coordinator Nolan had a great relationship with Lewis when he was the Ravens’ defensive coordinator. They would meet every week to discuss game-planning.

Besides, Denver is not expected to re-sign middle linebacker Nate Webster. It has been estimated the Broncos have more than $30 million in salary-cap room.

This could be a more viable destination than the Cowboys or the Jets.

-Baltimore Sun

by ten_fiver on Feb 27, 2009 1:59 AM MST reply actions

I honestly just don't see it

Besides, does everyone remember how mediocre Lewis was before Ngata got there and after Siragusa had left? We don’t have that kind of space eating big man to occupy blockers. Signing him would seem to indicate to me that the team is targeting Raji in the draft.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Feb 27, 2009 2:05 AM MST up reply actions

Dude

This would be a nightmare scenario for me. Building a new defense around a guy whose last great season will probably be last year, in his final big contract season, and supplanting him with the draft’s most overrated prospect (imo, obviously) in Raji. I think we should take his name off the board entirely, but I doubt that would happen.

I am Jack's unbridled optimism.

by A.J. Haefele on Feb 27, 2009 2:08 AM MST up reply actions

by broncofan91 on Feb 27, 2009 2:21 AM MST reply actions

I'm BACK!!!

And alone….. so alone…. I’m going back to bed.

I like the signings of Buckhalter and Arrington. Bartell would be awesome.Who is this SAF and why is he not Sanders?

From rotoworld: “Free agent CB Bryant McFadden is "leaning toward” signing with the Lions, according to SI.com’s Peter King." Why would you want to go to the Lions?

OK, I've started having dreams about the draft. Is that bad? A couple of weeks ago, I dreamed that we traded down to the #18 pick and drafted Chris Wells. (Zappa was pissed off.) Then last night I dreamed that we passed on Knowshon Moreno to get Maualuga, and Knowshon went to the Chargers. (Zappa was pissed off again.) Is it worse that I'm dreaming about the draft, or that I'm dreaming about Zappa?
