MHR Friday Free Agency Open Thread

Good Morning Bronco Fans around the World!  We had an active night and will likely have an active day as well.

Talk about everything you are hearing in this thread.  So far, this is what is being reported, both about the Broncos and around the League --

  • Do the Redskins even get it?  $100 million for Albert Haynesworth?  $50 million for DeAngelo Hall?  I'll make a prediciton - neither will ever win a Super Bowl in Washington.
  • It appears the Broncos are looking at adding Wide Receivers as well as Running Backs.  A report has WR Jabar Gaffney planning a visit to Dove Valley.  Gaffney worked with Josh McDaniels in New England and knows the offense.
  • Adam Schefter is also reporting Broncos are trying to get RB Derrick Ward(NYG) and DT Ronnie Fields(SF) in for a visit as well.  Fields is a known commodity for the Broncos due to DC Mike Nolan's experience with him in San Francisco
  • It looks like Domonique Foxworth is going to sign with the Baltimore Ravens, which means the Broncos would only receive a 7th round pick for Foxy.  The deal would have been sweeter had Foxy re-signed with Atlanta.
  • The New England Patriots signed RB Fred Taylor.  Moves like that are likely to be what you can expect in Denver from McXanders.
  • The Chiefs don't have many veterans as it is, and now one of their good ones is unhappy and wants out.  This is not a good sign that the new leadership in K.C. is off to a good start.  Sure, you need to weed out the vets that are going to hinder progress, but like Eric Mangini in Cleveland, Scott Pioli needs to recognize that, for better or worse, the Parcells/Belichick routine only work for those guys.  Refusing to meet with players, especially veteran leaders, is not the way to deal with people, especially grown men.  Before anyone says any different, how would you feel?
  • Hat-Tip to Denver_Native in the comments -- LB Bart Scott(BAL) looks to have agreed to a deal with the New York Jets.  Scott is a fit with the Jets because of his relationship with new Jets HC Rex Ryan, who was Scott's DC in Baltimore.
  • Ray Lewis will apparently not return to the Ravens, and it is reported that the Broncos could be a landing spot given Lewis' solid relationship with Mike Nolan dating back to their days in Baltimore.
  • I guy I am interested in, DE Chris Canty(DAL) was supposed to go visit the Redskins.  He has 100 million reasons not to now, so Canty is heading to Tennessee.
  • The Broncos have come to terms with RB J.J. Arrington and RB Correll Buckhalter according to CBS4 in Denver.  The report also says there could be as many as 6 deals announced by the Broncos today.
  • The Cleveland Browns have traded TE Kellen Winslow Jr.  to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Baltimore has officially signed Domonique Foxworth to a four-year, $28 million deal that includes $16.5 million guaranteed.  Are you kidding me?!?!
  • A name to keep an eye on is DE Marques Douglas who was cut by the Ravens today.  He fits the 3-4 model and has a history with Mike Nolan.
  • S Brian Dawkins is on his way to Denver to visit with the Broncos, according to Adam Schefter.
  • Carolina Panthers are said to be interested in former Broncos DT Dewayne Robertson
  • Chiefs and Patriots have worked out a deal for LB Mike Vrabel.  Vrable is in K.C. undergoing a physical.  Scott Pioli makes his first big move!

Guru,

Do you like the signings of Buckhalter and Arrington?

by stedtfeld on Feb 27, 2009 6:58 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

We signed them already?

I was just reading that they were brought in for visits. And why isn’t Canty on that list?

A little bit of a misnomer, for you will find no solace here.

Canty is headed to DC today to get his "stimlus" check

Does anyone know how the Skins afford these moves? I swear they must have received Federal funding to do this…. :)

To me, the biggest question is cap room. Daniel Snyder has plenty of cash. According to NFLN last night, the Skins only had $8 million in space…

by Douglas A. Lee on Feb 27, 2009 7:16 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

To his credit

the Skins are pretty savy when it comes to getting around their cap issues. In a lot of ways, since we didn’t land him, I’m thrilled he went to a team out of conference.

Redskins no longer interested in Canty

According to ESPN:

After the Albert Haynesworth signing made the front page of nearly every sports website in the land on Friday morning, the Washington Redskins have decided not to bring in fellow defensive lineman Chris Canty for his scheduled interview on Friday, reports the Washington Post.

Canty will thus be moving up his visitation schedule, likely to begin with the Tennessee Titans before moving on to the Seattle Seahawks and San Francisco 49ers.

Why isnt denver on that list?

by purplesocks on Feb 27, 2009 8:29 AM MST up reply actions   0 recs

I haven't received official word but...

to answer your question I would be happy with those deals, depending on the money involved.

Arrington gives the Broncos a proven returner in Arrington which would take the load off of Eddie Royal, at least on kick-offs.

Buckhalter provides the Broncos a solid running back that doesn’t have alot of miles on the tires. He averaged 4.9 ypc last season and will likely fill the Michael Pittman role.

Great post Guru and thanks for the upgrades on rumors already...

I know many of us, me included, have been underwhelmed by the initial foray by the Broncos, but give it time.
Hardly any signings ANYWHERE so far, so there is still time for us to make some very positive moves.

Rotoworld

Sources close to Ray Lewis tell Adam Schefter that Lewis “will not return” to Baltimore and that his career with the team is over.

This could be a negotiating ploy or emotions getting the best of Lewis. Don’t assume he’s gone. The Ravens offered Lewis $17 million guaranteed Thursday, a very good offer, but he’s upset with how negotiations have gone. We highly doubt he’ll get a better deal elsewhere. With Dallas and New York apparently not interested yet, there are no obvious suitors.

Rotoworld

The Texans are expected to sign free agent Patrick Ramsey to replace Sage Rosenfels as Matt Schaub’s backup.

This is a severe downgrade. Ramsey knows Gary Kubiak’s offense after his stay in Denver, but the former first-round pick had elbow problems in 2008 and has never been a good quarterback. Alex Brink couldn’t be that much worse.

From a leadership stand point I think it'd be good;

however, I watched a couple minute piece on ESPN demonstrating why he is nowhere near the same player that he used to be. Their point was that he can no longer shed blocks like he used to be able to and can’t penetrate upfield like he used to. The pundits thought that his declining skill were somewhat hidden in Baltimore’s defense because of the talent around him and familiarity with the system but would be expsed in another system. Then again, it is ESPN so?

He's also benefitted from having some darn good NTs up front to tie up blockers....

Even if we somehow snag a good NT, it’s going to be a major downgrade from what he’s used to….at least for next season…

Giants beat writer Mike Garafalo passes along old Combine buzz that he heard the Bucs would offer free agent Derrick Ward $15 million over four years.

The deal would include $8M guaranteed. Ward and agent Drew Rosenhaus will do their best to find more money, but Tampa would be a solid fit. He’d be the favorite for third-down work and probably split early-down carries with Earnest Graham. Ward dynasty owners should still hope the Bengals step up.

What are your thoughts about Lewis? Would you want him if we sign him to say 3 years 27 mil? I would like to hear your thoughts about who you would like to see the broncos target in FA

by purplesocks on Feb 27, 2009 8:39 AM MST reply actions   0 recs

If the reports are true about what the Ravens were offering, and he turned it down because he wanted more, then I have no desire. Ray is the type of guy I would want from the standpoint that he is a bad-ass, plays with the attitude this defense has lacked, and would be great in the locker room with the younger guys. 20 million guaranteed or something like that? No Way.

As for my wishes, I would really like to see Chris Canty, but that won’t likely happen. I would love for the Broncos to get Ronnie Fields as a start at NT. James Sanders would be a nice addition as well as whichever Ravens Safety is available(Landry or Leonhard)

And Arrington has never showed that he can play in the NFL, I rather see them develop Hillis and Torain and draft someone like Ian Johnson, still not sure why they cut Aldridge since he could fill the role on KR, I just see it as a waste of cap space on two very limited players where we could be using that money to address the defense

Arrington = 3rd down plus special teams

One of the most frustrating things about Shanny was that while the rest of the league brought RBs into the passing game, we never, ever did. Not even with Portis. This is a great move. A 3rd-down back/ST returners is an extremely useful player likely to be undervalued by most everybody.

We're also looking at Jabar Gaffney (DP)

Jabar Gaffney
6’1, 200lb.

1st pick in the 2nd round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. After his rookie contract was up the Texans chose not to re-sign him. Gaffney signed a one-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles (March 2006). He was placed on waivers on September 3. On October 9, 2006, Gaffney signed a two-year deal with the Patriots. On March 5, 2008, Gaffney re-signed with the Patriots for one year worth $2 million.

The thing I like best about this player is that unlike many who get to the playoffs but can’t produce, he is at his best in the post-season. I know that he’s a role player, but it could be a good role for the Broncos. Look at these stats:

Gaffney is the only player in NFL history to record back-to-back playoff games with eight or more catches for 100 or more yards in the same postseason.

He caught eight passes for 104 yards in a first-round playoff game against the New York Jets (1/7/07) and followed that with a 10-catch performance for 103 yards the following week at San Diego (1/14/07).

In the 2006 playoffs Gaffney led the team with 21 catches for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

BTW, I like it that Arrington is a return guy who has other skills, esp. his receiving.

I guess I am alright with this if we would just get a bit pro active on the defensive side of the ball.

Rotoworld

The Titans are believed to have “some” interest in free agent DT Dewayne Robertson, according to the Nashville City Paper.

Chris Canty would help on more downs, but Tennessee could employ Robertson as a wave player. They’ll probably use a committee to replace Albert Haynesworth.

Good question

Obviously he is not a big time pass rusher, but looks like he has the size to be a NT, he may not be the long term solution in Denver, but I hate the thought of going into next year with rookie NT or Grady Jackson starting.

Yet all I’ve heard about is RBs and WRs. What gives?

Here's my take

We have needs on both sides of the ball.

The Offense though has a core of young talent that is established. Free agents can add to and make a difference on this side of the ball quite easily and enhance what happens there.

The Defense is getting a complete makeover. We don’t have youthful talent at all on that side of the ball…all the free agents being offense so far tells me that the team is building the defense’s nucleus of talent through the draft which is a GOOD THING!

I still think as time passes we will pick up some good players for the defensive side of the ball. I won’t be surprised at all if the numbers from each side are equal or we have a few more FAs from the offensive side.

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I don’tthink any of us thought Foxy was worth that when he got traded last year. I think he is a serviceable corner on a good defense. If the Ravens maintain their front seven play as usual, he will probably be a solid corner for them. It looks like they might be having a hard time keeping that LB core together though.

Here's a question

(Been brought up earlier by Boydy) But since Cleveland seems to be unloading some of it’s more vocal players, does Shaun Rogers become a target for Denver, I was against it, but if he would rework his contract then I may be for it, needs to be incentive ladden to motivate him.

to see if great defense are more great scheme or more great players. Numerous great defenses have lost key players…we’ll see how much it impacts them.

I know that WR is about the last area that we should be spending money;

however, it is fun to think about a Marshall, Boldin, Royal, Stokley, Scheffler receiving core in a NE style offense. We might not need a defense.

That did give me an interesting idea.

It might be easier to make our offense literally unstoppable than it would be to get our defense to respectability. As long as we’re the last team with the ball then…

Maybe we should just focus on offense in free agency and worry about defense in the draft.

Sad, really.

I hate this:
The Star Tribune is reporting that the Vikings have sent feelers to free agent WR Michael Clayton and CB Chris Carr to gauge their interest in coming to Minnesota. The Vikings are looking to upgrade at receiver and add depth at cornerback. Clayton is expected to visit Detroit. The Vikings also figure to be in the mix for free-agent receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh.

What the hell does that mean and why is it newsworthy?

How about this:

The Broncos are reportedly looking to add depth on their defensive line and may put some feelers out for Chris Canty today. They may also be in the mix for free-agent douchebag Jack Sprat.

Come on….report the damn news!

Study Hall!!

I love these RB signings. HOWEVA,

The Sporting News reports that the Rams, Bucs, and Broncos are not in the mix for free agent RB Derrick Ward.

Go Housh!! And maybe a defensive guy if we get around to it. Is Bartell with anyone yet?

OK, I've started having dreams about the draft. Is that bad? A couple of weeks ago, I dreamed that we traded down to the #18 pick and drafted Chris Wells. (Zappa was pissed off.) Then last night I dreamed that we passed on Knowshon Moreno to get Maualuga, and Knowshon went to the Chargers. (Zappa was pissed off again.) Is it worse that I'm dreaming about the draft, or that I'm dreaming about Zappa?

How many would love to see LT cut by the Chargers?

And then for us to sign him? I don’t believe for a second that he is washed up…the dude has Walter Payton type of agility and is not built like Shaun Alexander. I still hate his guts, but I might like him if he wears orange and blue for a couple of years. Sorta like when Marcus Allen was cut by the Raiders and he went on to have a couple of solid seasons in KC.

Lots at SD

I’ll have a post up over the weekend, but their offseason surgery list is amazing. From the SD Union-Trib:

Four unrestricted free agents won’t be back: guard Mike Goff, linebacker Marques Harris, center Jeremy Newberry and defensive end Igor Olshansky.
The Chargers also got rid of linebacker Anthony Waters, a third-round draft pick in 2007.
Smith said left tackle Marcus McNeill had major neck surgery three weeks ago.
Smith also made a rare public admission of a shortcoming.
"I’m not very pleased with my own contributions in the last two years, personally," Smith said. "I critique myself every year, just like I do everybody else. I need to do a better job. I’m not happy with some of the player personnel decisions that have been made, in looking back. I need to do a better job in the decision-making process."
Smith wouldn’t offer specifics. He often speaks of signing "character" players, yet the Chargers have had their share of off-field problems in his six-year tenure.
"It’s also obvious to me I need to do a better job in bringing in the right kind of players who can help us on the field and off the field," he said, emphasizing the word "off."

SD and LDT have taken their issues out of the press for once. While the Bolts are looking for the next back, they also want to restructure LDT and keep him to go with Sproles. If they don’t, or even if they do, they will look hard at Moreno in the 1st round, but they have a lot of holes to fill.

What we need to do is sell SD that we will select Moreno, then I am sure they will make a stupid trade to jump up and get him

AJ thinks he has all the pieces alredy, so trading away his draft picks is no big thing for him since he thinks they won’t make the team anyways.

more on Dawkins

comments — I can’t say I have a problem with Dawkins coming here; my only question was his age and cost, and I don’t like the idea paying too much for older players in decline. However, free agency can often be about paying a little too much and Dawkins still has ability and might be a well-timed acquisition for filling the gap till we develop younger talent. I DON’T HAVE a problem with his type of of player or his ability now — he fits what we want, i.e., the NE style of play.

Ahh, there it is.

It didn’t show up in my Rotoworld page until a couple minutes ago. Does Rotoworld auto-refresh? I’m getting tired of manually refreshing it.

My guess is Foxworth was traded more because he stood up to Shanny than because of his play

But I think the price tag is more indicative of the lack of talented CB who are free agents than Foxworth being a No.1 corner.

A thought

Dawkings & Ray Lewis(?); sounds like a nice fix for the middle of our defense. Find me some DLs, is all I can say.

BTW — as many of you know, since it’s posted above, Lewis is also seriously considering us. Not a bad group, even though they’re old.

I wouldn't mind Ray as much as most.

It would be fun to see the Broncos doing that kind of stuff without it being corny. I think Ray would instantly upgrade everyone else on our D.

lots of cap room

Perhaps, and I thought the same thing previously. It’s hard to say that with conviction since we’re not looking at the actual numbers and there has been a lot of cap room created recently. What I’ve said recently, is that THIS is the year to spend because we don’t have the FAs to re-sign. Next year is a ‘bear’ but I’m looking at those salaries as being spread over the life of the contract and not necessarily creating cap problems in 2010. It’s still a concern, though.

Only if they are cheap.

I wouldn’t mind shelling out a few bucks for them but not big bucks. Of course they would give us another year or two to get some holes filled. We have too many holes on defense to try and fill them all this year.

We gotta get nastier on D!!!!!!!!!

cheap V good -- cost effectiveness

McXanders has said they’d spend big money if needed, and there’s no question that Lewis and Dawkins are good. Some big money has to be spent wisely on top tier talent or we don’t accomplish anything. We’ve gone expensive (and un-wisely, e.g., Henry) and we’ve gone cheap (various) and got nothing for our efforts. I don’t mind the idea of Dawkins and Lewis because there’s no question of their ability and the cap problems go away when they’re long gone. SO…….. it’s a cost effective signing.

I've got an ESPN story

Here’s a name to keep an eye on in Denver: Marques Douglas. The defensive end was just cut by Baltimore. He played for new Denver defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in both Baltimore and San Francisco. The Broncos have a need for a player such as Douglas. This could be a perfect fit. Nolan is also trying to get defensive tackle Ronnie Fields, who played for him in San Francisco.

He’s 6’2, 292, 31 years old, 8th year player.

Then last night I dreamed that we passed on Knowshon Moreno to get Maualuga, and Knowshon went to the Chargers. (Zappa was pissed off again.) Is it worse that I'm dreaming about the draft, or that I'm dreaming about Zappa?

That doesn't seem to be an area of need, maybe they are doing it to screw with Dallas

That Foxworth contract is just obscene

He is nowhere near a $7M player

Happy for him though

He was a solid corner with great character. I’ll always associate him with D-Will and will never forget what they did for us as rookies.

Seems like McD is sticking with the old Belichick tradition of secrecy. Or they're just not doing anything.

Hopefully it’s the former.

In addition to the Titans, the Panthers are reportedly interested in free agent DT Dewayne Robertson.

Then can have him.

Rotoworld

Chiefs acquired Mike Vrabel from the Patriots for an undisclosed draft pick, pending a physical.

As friendly a trade as you’ll see. Bill Belichick and buddy Chiefs GM Scott Pioli both know Vrabel’s strengths and weaknesses, and his leadership is worth more to the young Chiefs. He’ll help be a coach on the field as Kansas City installs their 3-4 defense. We suspect Vrabel will not be an every-down player, and will focus on rushing the passer.

Interesting, I wonder why the Pats let him go, seems like they need all the LB they can get

Anyone up for a big MHR 360-fest to discuss free agency?

Today or tomorrow… I was thinking we could all get together and play Halo or something, since everyone seems to have Halo. Anyone up for it? Gamertag is BeastlyDelbert.

I'd like to have a PS3 COD4 or 5 Fest myself...any takers? :P

Is there such a thing as a Playstation 3 Anonymous? I can't seem to stop thinking about or playing COD 4 and COD 5. I hear this is quite normal for a teenager, but I haven't been a teenager since Bill Clinton was frolicking with interns.

Maybe next weekend when I'm at my mom's house.

I can use my stepbro’s PS3. But I am terrible at COD5

B Dawkins is steal a gamer.

Dawkins stats haven’t fallen off at all. He caused 6 forced fumbles last year, I don’t think our entire D caused 6 f.f.s last year…

Not sure about FF's

but we definitely only had 6 picks last year… a depressing number.
