  • Washington signed Albert Haynesworth and re-upped with DeAngelo Hall.
  • Kellen Winslow, Jr. was traded from Cleveland to Tampa Bay for undisclosed draft picks.
  • New England signed Fred Taylor and agreed with Chris Baker. UPDATE - Taylor denies reports of a deal with the Pats.
  • The Jets have agreed in principle with Bart Scott. UPDATE - Scott has given the Ravens a chance to match the deal.
  • Domonique Foxworth has agreed to terms with Baltimore.
  • Brian Dawkins will visit Denver, according to Adam Schefter.

  • Our old pal Gus Frerotte has been let go by Minnesota.
  • Alex Marvez says Andra Davis is visiting Denver as well. Thanks to FCbroncomaniac for the link.

woot woot.

Nothing like a new thread to brighten the day. BRING IT AWN!!!!

OK, I've started having dreams about the draft. Is that bad? A couple of weeks ago, I dreamed that we traded down to the #18 pick and drafted Chris Wells. (Zappa was pissed off.) Then last night I dreamed that we passed on Knowshon Moreno to get Maualuga, and Knowshon went to the Chargers. (Zappa was pissed off again.) Is it worse that I'm dreaming about the draft, or that I'm dreaming about Zappa?

I will miss the comics in the RMN

Few other papers had four pages of comic strips

So...just to sum things up:

The Broncos have done nothing as of yet to improve the defense. C’mon McXander…let’s see some action.

The Broncos are expected to pursue DE Marques Douglas, recently released by the Ravens.
Douglas played for new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan in both Baltimore and San Francisco, and the Broncos have a need for bigger defensive ends in Nolan’s new 4-3 defense.

Nolan’s new 4-3 defense, eh? Bring it on…I know we have not employed the 4-3 in about 2 months. I hope our guys can transition.

We need veteran offensive role players and a young defensive core.

Thus, thes FA signings are very promising. Bring in some cheap, vet role players for offense and some veteran leaders (Dawkins would be huge in this respect) on defense and then go out and draft a young defensive core. We’ll be one of the youngest teams in the league next year and need veteran guys to complement the youth, especially on defense (with the likelyhood of seven rooks in 2009).

If we can land Dawkins, and Ray Ray, along with a couple devensive role players— we’re set.

I agree

It’s not signing guys like Dawkins to build around, but more to facilitate the building, helping to get the youngsters in position, showing them the ropes, etc.

He definitely has the size. If GB signed Canty it might significantly increase the Broncos chance of landing Raji.

I would LOVE to land Raji...I just doubt he'll still be around at 12.

But if GB shores up some of their D line needs in free agency then our chances at Raji increase somewhat.

that’s what i was thinking.
he has only missed 4 games in the last 3 years.
he has alos carried yards per carry of: 4.9, 5.0, and 4.2 in those 3 seasons.

these signings would also more than likely mean the end of guys like selvin young and andre hall.

i just hope the amount of money doesnt mean that he is imediately sprung into the starters role. not to say that he wouldnt necessarily be successful, but i was hoping to get a good look at what Hillis can do for a full season

Dawkins would be nice and all

But he has lost a step or two. Since Bell was already signed as previously noted, I think the Broncos should be talking Jermaine Phillips, and James Sanders. Phillips is probably the best safety left, and if the Bucs don’t lock him up he could be a nice option. He is injury prone though…

Sanders is younger and has been quietly getting better in NE. I think he can be longer then just a short term option..

So the Bart Scott to NYJ is not a done deal yet

Bart Scott reportedly is going to give the Ravens a chance to match the Jets’ five-year, $40 million contract offer.

In an effort to break the story, many national sources said the deal was officially agreed to. But it was never signed and it now appears Scott is having second thoughts and wants to give Baltimore another shot. We don’t see why Baltimore wouldn’t match now, but it’s no lock. We’ll find out shortly.

The Baltimore Sun passes along speculation that the Ravens now offering Bart Scott a five-year, $42 million contract.

Dawkins, Buckhalter, Arrington and a long snapper.

At least I’ve heard of all these guys. Last year we were signing bad players from bad teams. Dawkins would be similar to the Lynch signing, brought in to fill a leadership role as much as for his play making abilities. I’d love to see us add Ray Lewis. He’d be great for DJ Williams, and like Dawkins and Champ, would serve as a great role model for what is going to be a very young Defense. So far I’m pleased with the way X and Coach Hoodie are moving quickly and deftly in Free Agency.

(Zappa was pissed off again.) Is it worse that I'm dreaming about the draft, or that I'm dreaming about Zappa?

http://www.sportingnews.com/blog/real_scouts/entry/view/17585/brian_dawkins_signs_in_denver

After 13 years with the Eagles, safety Brian Dawkins will have a new home.

David White of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Dawkins has agreed to terms with the Broncos.

Dawkins, 35, had said during the season that he thought he’d work out a deal to end his career in Philly. It could still happen, but only after a stint with the Broncos.

Predictions before the season began: 11-5 and a top five offense (I was probably too conservative).

Especially at this point in his career. He’s getting by with his intelligence and experience and you can only do that for so long before your everybody realizes you aren’t what you used to be

Disagree

He is too smart and savvy to not make an impact. You should go back to last year and watch some film on our safeties…not only will you see at least 25 different pairings of guys throughout the season, but you will get a very very clear idea of how to

1) Not wrap up
2) Get juked
3) Be out of position for the deep ball
4) Get taken for a 16 yard ride by a receiver who is at least 30 lbs lighter than you
(really…I could go on and on)

I don’t want breakaway speed. I want break-some-poor-fool-as-I-bowl-you-over power getting 6 yards off a play that should have been stopped for 2 at most.

I don't know why everyone hates our signings so far:

Besides the longsnapper which is hard to justify, I like what we have done so far during free agency.

- Dawkins is an awesome addition and will provide some of the vocal veteran leadership that we have been missing since Al Wilson left. Plus, he still has some ability at safety.
- Buckhalter has been consistently good in his career and will provide a nice tandem along with Hillis. Plus he has great hands from out of the backfield.
- Arrington is also a good signing as now we won’t have to make Eddie Royal return kickoffs and have a nice change of pace back.

One final note: both Buckhalter and Arrington are more accomplished NFL running backs than anyone we had back there last year and have more potential than any of our runningbacks besides Hillis and Torain.

Here's to a completely defensive draft!

Brian Patrick Dawkins (born October 13, 1973 in Jacksonville, Florida) is an American football safety for the Philadelphia Eagles for life of the National Football League. He was drafted by the Eagles in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He played college football at Clemson.
A seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Dawkins is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles 75th Anniversary Team and 20/20 Club.

When Denver wanted reinforcements. It turned to the AFC East Division that produced Broncos coach Josh McDaniels.

Denver signed former Patriots wide receiver Jabar Gaffney to a four-year, $10 million deal that includes $3 million guaranteed. Former Miami safety Renaldo Hill signed a matching four-year, $10 million deal that includes $3 million guaranteed. Now Denver has two more players that McDaniels knows well.

Can't believe Pioli

would trade the third pick in the draft considering he comes from New England where they value draft picks like they do.

It's true

that they value draftpicks in NE. I can’t (don’t have the time) to find the quote, but I believe Pioli was quoted one time as saying that they placed the highest amount of value on picks at the end of the first/high second round due to the money vs. impact ratio. He went on to say that having high draft picks actually HURT a team because they are just as hit or miss as later picks, but cost WAY more money

It's just speculation on my part

If you’re the Chiefs and you need a QB, you can either draft one, or trade a pick for Cassell. Personally I think option 2 is better (though I don’t think Cassell will be a guy who does well without a good supporting cast) than the QBs who are coming out this year.

Or does that mean they’re planning to keep Eddie on the outside?

Eddie to slot

In McD’s offense, the slot gets too much work for a guy like Stokes to keep up. Eddie will be the slot guy, effectively making him the 1st or 2nd target.

Think Wes Welker.

I like

the philosophy McD and Xanders seem to be going with in free agency. Using it to plug gaps in the roster, not make major overhauls. They know this defense will have to be built through the draft. It’s the way to do it and Dawkins will be a perfect stopgap to provide some leadership.

So we've got

Corell Buckhalter
JJ Arrington
Renaldo Hill
Lonnie Paxton
Jabbar Gaffney
And (maybe) Brian Dawkins.

WHAT NUMBERS WILL THEY WEAR?!?! The most important question.
