Cutler-McDaniels Finally Speak, Issues Remain. Surprised?
This just in...
CBS4 Sports has learned Jay Cutler and the Broncos have finally spoken. It was not face-to-face, but rather by conference call on Monday with Cutler, head coach Josh McDaniels and even owner Pat Bowlen among those on the line.
http://cbs4denver.com/broncos/nfl.broncos.cutler.2.955839.html
The much awaited discussion was prompted after the now well-publicized events on the first weekend of free agency. The Broncos explored a possible trade that would have sent Cutler out of town for former Patriots backup Matt Cassel. The trade never happened and Cassel eventually ended up in Kansas City. The Broncos denied they initiated any trade talks, but Cutler was certain the team tried to move him.
Sources close to the situation tell CBS4 Sports that the tone of the dicussion was not exactly "make nice" as might have been expected. We're told McDaniels made it clear to the quarterback how the team will be run, and how Cutler was expected to fit into that plan. McDaniels reiterated the Broncos position that they have no intention of trading Cutler, but he also made it clear that all players are being constantly evaluated and could be traded if management thinks it will make the team better.
CBS4 Sports contacted the Broncos for a comment about Monday's discussions, but so far they have not responded.
The Broncos expect Cutler to report to Dove Valley next Monday, when the Broncos begin voluntary offseason workouts.
CBS4 Sports has also learned that Bowlen attempted to contact Cutler twice last week. Both calls went unreturned.

Will Cutler report to OTA’s on Monday?

I hope so.
If not, we have major problems.

Yes
Folks, he’s not happy about how things are. He’s under contract, and they need each other. He’s a smart young man – he’ll fulfill his contract. Stop with the negative theories until a situation actually occurs?

If he wants to be a Bronco and play for his teammates, he will.

Issues remain....
There was a hum on the line when they spoke? Bowlen’s nose whistled while listening….?

The coach is just laying down the law
I don’t think there is anything wrong with that

While not all sunshine and lolly pops..
I think that McDaniels did the right thing by be straight forward with Cutler and letting him know who is in charge. He set the tone going forward that no player is above the TEAM. The days of being coddled by Shanahan and the coaching staff are over. I’m suprised that Cutler refused to take calls from Bowlen last week. I think that is childish. I still believe winning will resolve all differences and Cutler will be the QB of Broncos for a long time.
However, if Cutler decides not to show up for OTAs or even camp, then the Broncos should let him hold out, not try and trade him, and then go after a pro-rated portion of his signing bonus. Hopefully that will not happen, but if it does the Broncos should not be forced to concede into trading him for anything less than franchise QB market value.

Here's a test
How exactly does CB4 know what what said? “Sources said” isn’t very reassuring if that source has an ax to grind. And we really can’t expect that those sources were listening in on the conference call, so which ‘angle’ are we hearing? How am I to judge the veracity of this account?

My thoughts exactly!
If none of the parties to the call are talking, then how does CBS 4 know what was said?
by SlowWhiteGuy on Mar 10, 2009 7:53 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
DP says talks went "sour"
And about the only thing I’m certain of lately is that none of the parties involved wants to talk to the media. SO…….. how would the DPo know?

The call...
Consisted of Bowlen, McD, and J.C…. Oh and some 6’9" 250lb (ding) guy in a trench coat with a blackberry…. hiding behind the window curtains.
Who are these sources….? Are they the same dudes that make sure the urinal cakes are fresh? Other than an assistant listenting in on the call, who could it be? And will someone please tell me what these issues are that remain?

What issues remain?
Cutler was told to shape up and that McDandiels is going to do what’s best for the team. Any issues from here on out are Cutler being a crybaby. Seems pretty straight forward, and I’m glad he and Bowlen didn’t bend over to stroke the crybaby’s ego.

In all fairness to Culter...
While his agent has been kinda whiny, Jay’s been nothing but straightforward. When asked about the trade rumor he said he was shocked and upset. When asked later after the denial he said he still doesn’t trust McD. There’s nothing crybaby there, just maybe a little more frank than is best for his image.

I agree...
Where has he been a “crybaby”? He’s on record as saying that if we trade him, then “so be it”.
Whining? No. Seems pretty resigned to the biz. He’s pissed because he thinks he was lied to. Nobody likes being lied to.

Bowlen's gotta be pissed
I own my own business…if I need to get in touch with my workers over important shit, I expect a call back. If I don’t receive one, I feel disrespected and I don’t feel they have the interest of my business in mind. You don’t disrespect the person that writes your checks…
Jay’s putting himself in a tough position, where he’s showing McD and Bowlen that he believes he’s larger than the Broncos.
You're going to find this hard to believe, but I personally feel that it's a lot smarter to leave things to a person's imagination, let him fill things in for himself. When your own mind completes something, it's much more valuable to you, I think.

Hang on
has the report of the unreturned calls been legitimized or is it still another comment from those unnamed sources.
One thing I know for sure - I'm usually wrong.

Good Question
has the report of the unreturned calls been legitimized or is it still another comment from those unnamed sources.
But IF Pat Bowlen caled Cutler and Cutler didn’t return the call, I’d do a 180 on my attitude toward Cutler – I’ve been totally on his side so far.

It’s one thing to be wrong, but it’s another to prolong the wronging when it could easily be put to bed.

There is a reason 32 year old dont get hired often
And we are seeing it unfold. No public relation experience, Xander and McDaniel create a mess and sit on the sidelines watching it grow. A team that almost made the playoffs despite losing 7 rb’s, all the linebackers and Champ Bailey to injury that was looking at using 9 draft picks on D and spending cash on improving the D in the preseason is now a mess in a few short months. Cutler and Stokley, both locker room leaders are calling out the coach in the paper. Every team in the NFL now knows the relationship is shot between the young coach and young pro bowl QB leaving little to no chance that they will get market value for Cutler. Denver has not had a top 10 pick in over a decade and has not had a blackout in my lifetime but both are looking possible unless Xander and McDaniel do their job and take control of the situation and salvage this mess.

Sold out every game since 1970...
…and we had some stretches far worse than this (could even potentially be). Leave it to the losers in Cali (faders and dolts) to bail on their teams when the goin’ gets tough. Keep the faith Broncos Nation!
