What does Chris Simms bring to the Broncos' Table?
Hey Guru, Styg & Hooserier teacher. With the growing impass I'd be interested on ypur take as to what we might expect with Simms under center. Bradford and McCoy and Jevan Sith of OLE Miss come out next year . Could one of them be our Fanchise QB of the future? I don't think Stafford is a good fit but Shanchez might work from this year's QB crop but other needs seem more important. Look forward to your take!

I know what he doesn't bring!
A spleen.
I can win an argument on any topic, against any opponent. People know this, and steer clear of me at parties. Often, as a sign of their great respect, they don't even invite me. -Dave Barry
Untill !!!!
He gets any kind of playing time who really knows ?
He is on a new team new system there is more questions then answers with him !
Anyone who offers any kind of comment of what he brings to denver strictly answers
on his past preformance which was spent mostly riding the bench in TB . A couple
of years ago he saw some spot duty due to the injury of the starting QB . I will admit
he preformed well in the few games he played and the team just missed the
playoffs on a heartbreaking dropped pass in the endzone . That being said I think the
team he had around him was solid at that time , and that I dont think that should be
any indication of how he will preform now especially with the injury { spleen } and
the lack of experience because of infrequent playing time .

Jevan Sith?
Sounds like a better fit with the raiders. I bet Darth Al laps him up next year.

The biggest thing Chris Simms brings to the table...
is bargaining power for the FO. With Ramsey, Cutler always knew the Broncos really had no other options. With Simms on board there is a real threat that the Broncos may be willing to move on if Jay tries to hold out. Simms doesn’t have the skill set that Cutler has, but he has more experience. He has been to the playoffs (something Cutler hasn’t); he has won must win games (something else cutler hasn’t done).
Nobody knows how well Simms may or may not do, but Cutler/Cook probably can’t afford to find out.
what i like about him...
is that his coach is Josh McDaniels. McDaniels was able to take a virtually talentless guy who hadn’t played a game of football since high school and turned him into a elite QB in a year. If he can do that with Simms than we should be happy.

That is assuming alot
Cassel had been in the system for many years and got to watch and work with Brady, in addition, Cassel benefited playing with a defense that could save his bacon. One other thing to consider, Pats schedule was pretty easy last year since they got to play the AFC West and NFC West, neither had teams ready to compete with the Pats.

"Duffman is thrusting in the direction of the problem" - Duffman
"McDaniels must go!" - Broncoman
good points...
but Chris Simms we took because he is a system player. and personally i don’t buy into this whole training with a star makes you automatically better. i can see the reasoning but i just think we view it as too important.

Wasn't NE gonna brnig Simms in last year
as possible competition for Cassell for the #2 job. But then Brady got hurt and they did not want to burden Cassell with the extra pressure of looking over his shoulders at Simms.
shouldn't be too bad...
we play the AFC west twice as much as NE does, every year. Let’s face it, whatever other divisions we get (my bet is AFC North, and NFC North), Simms would be ok I think.
I’m sorry, I don’t see the Lions, Bears, Bengals and Browns being to much of a challenge even with a subpar quarterback.

There might be reasonable grounds to argue HOW talented Cassel is
but calling him “virtually talentless” is ignorant, in my opinion. He sat behind a guy who was very good at the college level, and he sat behind Brady at the pro level. You can’t play as well as he did last year, no matter who else is on the team, no matter who is tutoring you, without having some talent.

you are right.
that was a total overreaction on my part. cassel is in fact a talented QB but I was just trying more to make my point more clear than anything else lol. :)

For what it's worth
I feel better having Simms knowing McDaniels is the coach, too.

Simms vs. Leftwich
If we lose Cutler (gulp!) then should we look to bring another veteran FA. Best one available appears to be Leftwich. He is 24-22 career as an NFL starter. Career passer rating of around 80. 29 years old. Strong arm but immobile in the pocket.
du we hafta worry till draft day?
Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski writes that he’s “more and more convinced” Detroit will take a left tackle No. 1 overall.
Kowalski says it’ll be Eugene Monroe or Jason Smith, likely based on which is willing to take a cheaper contract. Kowalski doesn’t think the Lions are sold on Matt Stafford and expects them to make a run at Jay Cutler on draft day. Cutler would at least cost Detroit its second first-round pick (No. 20).
Not sure how relevant this is now,
but i stumbled on it while reading a story from jay glazer. this piece comes from his blog, dated august 2007.
Quarterback Chris Simms was trying to explain to me exactly what his body is going through in returning from a ruptured spleen and last year’s season-ending surgery.
Simms said when he needs to throw to his first target, he’s fine and his body has no problem following his mind’s orders. But when he needs to check off that first read and find a second or third target, his body simply tells his mind to get lost.
"I know where I’m supposed to go, but my body is resisting," he said. "It’s only when I have to turn and throw to someone other than my primary target. It’s hard to explain exactly why, but it’s like my body just won’t let me do it yet. I’ll eventually be able to, but I just have to be patient and wait until that happens. I hope the Bucs are patient too."
i’d be interested to hear how his state today compares to then.
I'd be interested to know
WHY this would be the case…. this sounds fascinating…

Sounds to me like rust
He was used to being able to check down to his second and third receiver and it probably felt strange to him when he couldn’t play at that pace. It felt different to him than to a rookie who hasn’t got up to NFL speed yet because he’d been there, knew what it felt like, and when he first came back couldn’t do it. Hence, “my body is resisting.” I suspect it’s long ceased to be an issue.

After the surgery he lacked conditioning
It takes time to recover from that kind of trauma. What they are describing is perfectly normal at one statge of the process. If he had not passed that stage, the Broncos docs wouldn’t have signed off on his acquisition.

Cassel....are you kidding?
He couldnt beat out Leinart, who can’t start at the NFL level. Don’t suggest that Cassel was anything more than a “VERY COACHED UP” QB. The success has to go to McDaniels. That’s why he’s confident he can coach any QB to greatness if they “BUY” into the system! Imagine how well Cutler would do, if Cassel can become an overnight phenom w/o near the experience of Cutler.
Bus Cook beware…. With Simms under contract and salivating for a chance to start, along with an opportunity to grab Byron Leftwich and a QB in the draft (one with college experience), your boy Jay could easily wind up in Detroit. A “Burial Ground” for QBs and all players! Is that what you want, or are you looking to find a niche’ with which to escalate contract talks and force Denver to ante up right now?

Jay and Detroit deserve each other.
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
Being better at the pro level doesn't necessarily mean being better at the college level
Lots of guys were better than Tom Brady at the college level, none of them are better at the pro level. Leinart was very good at the college level, probably better than Brady was when he was in college, but in the pros both Brady and Cassel are better.
