Lets think a minute MHR: Who REALLY holds the cards?

Hi All,

I am going to try and be as clinical as I can with this post, as I look at who actually holds the power and the cards in this whole Jay Cutler scenario.

Latest news from CBS4 is that Cutler has told the Broncos to trade him as he is done negotiating. This, in itself. is strange, as I am not sure what negotiations could have been taking place unless it was Bus and Jay angling for an extension and the Broncos shutting them down.

Here are the facts:

  • Jay Cutler has another 3 years on his contract.
  • He is due to make a base of 1.03 million, with a $100000 workout bonus, but it is incentive laden which means he could earn up to $6 million this season alone.
  • The Broncos have said they will NOT trade him.
  • Pat Bowlen has come out and publicly supported his head coach and chastized Jay Cutler for his handling of the affair.

Considering all this, Jay Cutler is in a no win situation. Here are his options:

1/ Hold out: This makes no sense as it decreases his value. It also highlights concerns on his character and leadership ability, which further decreases his value. It also effects his earning capacity. Cant see it happening.

2/ Ask for a trade: Ask away Jay. Its not going to happen unless some team comes with a BUMPER deal that allows the Broncos to fill MAJOR needs. The most likely scenario (and this is just my opinion crew) would be if Detroit offered their 1st, 20th and 33rd for Jay and Sheffler and say our 3rd rounder. I cant see it happening. Not even Detroit would mortagage the house on a QB who is talented, yet whos character and decision making ability can be questioned. ALso, simply put, Cutler can asked to be traded but he is under contract.....and i doubt the Broncos will oblige.

3/ The most likely scenario: Cutler will have to play out his final 3 years. It would be in his best interests to paly well, prove he is one of the best in the NFL and therefore increase his value in FA in 3 years time. For the Broncos, they get 3 quality years of play, plus the chance to plan for Cutler's departure.

So, when looked at in a purely common sense way, I feel it is highly doubtful that ANYTHING gets done.

Jay maybe cranky, he maybe moody, he may piss us all off BUT he will be the QB of the Broncos and we will get 3 good seasons from him.

Who knows? They say time heels all wounds and by end of year 2 all maybe good.

Get back to me on your thoughts, and my best wishes to everyone!

Peace.

Great Post!

I think you are right, I think he will have to play out his 3 years. Also, I think in the process, he and McDaniels will have gotten along and Jay will be resigned and will retire a Bronco.

can everyone please stop with the first pick

honestly, anyone who suggests that the broncos would want the first overall pick is 100% insane.

what options are there at #1
1) stafford
2) sanchez
3) curry

unless anyone thinks we need an OT.

why pay stafford or sanchez 35+ guarenteed when we have a young big arm. If the broncos wanted a big armed young kid who hasnt proven anything, they would have given jay some money.

curry is not a significant enough of an upgrade over what we have to warrant 35+ million and certainly not enough of an upgrade over a guy that is available at #12 for a fraction of the price.

Cassell was worth an early second round pick….. so where does anyone get off thinking Jay and sheff (who probaly doesnt even carry a third round pick value) is worth a slightly better pick and then the #1 and #20 pick in the draft

not meant to anyone personally

not necessarily directed at you boydy, i have seen countless posts saying we should trade for the lions 2 firsts and second

This situation has remarkable similarities to the Chad Johnson scene last year.

Johnson (excuse me, Ocho Cinco) demanded a trade. The Bengals refused. Johnson skipped camp. The Bengals remained unmoved. Johnson held out; The Bengals stayed the course. Johnson caved.

I can’t see McD trading Jay away for less than a bonanza of draft picks and I can’t see anyone coughing that up at this point.

Agreed....Bus asked for a trade and Xanders said no. End of story!

Yes, like the Johnson scene, but scarier

Skipping these preseason workouts, etc., will be much more damaging than was the case with Johnson last year. Cutler has a whole new system to learn…

Because of how both sides have handled this, I agree that I don’t see the Broncos trading him… but I see the deal Simms got as saying Jay may not play very much either. I think that now that McD (according to Cutler) admitting wanting Cassel more, in spite of telling Jay that Jay was part of the reason McD came here…. basically is on record as a liar of convenience. Jay Cutler is idealist and easily led down the paths that benefit others, and Pat Bowlen lied about his new role and let this situation come to a head. I’ll just bet Bowlen is disappointed… but regrets butter no bread.

I'm tired of hearing about money, money, money, money, money. I just want to play the game, drink Pepsi, wear Reebok.

The Broncos will play their best players

So Jay will play.
It seems to me Jay is still twisting the story to how it suits him.
Anyway, Cutler will be with the Broncos for another 3 years!

good post BUT

Cleveland I think is the most likely trade at this point because of salary cap issues surrounding the Detroit trade. IMO he is gone.

Hey Garrett...

Cleveland cant afford the cap hit and has no money to support Cutler’s contract, and Xanders confirmed tonoght there will be no trade.
Jay needs to get over it and get his head in the game.

No doubt the Broncos have all the leverage

He can cry and throw a tantrum all he wants, but it will not change a thing. Hold out Jay Cutler, see how far that gets you. It will only take you 3 years of not playing pro ball to get your freedom. Its in your best interest to play.

One thing that has been going through my mind

So he has three years left. Fantastic! But we could franchise him after those three years, right (think Julius Peppers)? So, technically, we could have him for four years (of course he could refuse that franchise, but couldn’t sign elsewhere, right?).

Tell me if I am wrong.

by adamriggs on Mar 15, 2009 11:12 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

We could,

But i think Jay will want to stay in denver after those three years

Well I guess if he really wanted to

He could officially retire and make a comeback. Didnt we have a certain receiver do that and go to Kansas City.

Excellent post Boydy.

I am pleased to see the consistency coming from Bronco HQ that they will NOT trade Jay Cutler. IMHO he is getting inciting and terrible advice from his agent who apparently has his own agenda. Think of it – 2 of the people whom he trusted professionally are gone: Shanny and Bates. Now he apparently is relying on Bus Cook. Talk about having one foot on a banana peel….
I agree that Cutler will play the next 3 years here. We may see a holdout – maybe even during training camp and into the season – but if we are winning and looking like a run into the playoffs is possible plus he realizes that his own value is diminishing – he is an intelligent young man – he will come back. I look for a Super Bowl run(s) in the next 3 years.

by Blackknigh on Mar 15, 2009 11:40 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

What should the Broncos do about the Cutler situation?

Absolutely Nothing.

For all the reasons that you mentioned and then some. For example, I don’t think you mentioned that once attendance becomes mandatory Jay will be fined for every day that he doesn’t show up. Also, if he holds out long enough he will end up owing a prorated portion of his signing bonus. In other words, Jay will play whether he likes it or not. The Broncos should just try to wait out the storm.

One question about your facts, I thought Cutler had two years remaining and not three. I could definitely be wrong and I’m not really sure where to check that info.

Did anyone notice What the Boss said

Bowlen- “I am disappointed in Jay”

That should speak volumes. Actively shopping the boy or not I dunno but Bowlen has now got an idea of what kind of MAN Cutler is. Obviously he doesnt care anymore about the QB issue he cares about his team and you never EVER show your boss you are LESS than he thought you were

Good point.

Has Bowlen ever come out and said such a thing about a player in the time he has been the boss? From what I know it is hard to ruffle the feathers of Mr. Bowlen and Jay seems to have done just that. Bowlen’s words speak volumes about the situation and where it has gone.

Exactly..

Be sure to see/listen to the link w/ Peter King on Dan Patrick show.. the boy wonder has sealed his own fate and is WAY to pigheaded to retract now.. the trust is non-repairable and the way this has gone just reeks of ego. I think of all the games I watched #6 and his body language on the sideline, it matches his antics in this fiasco – he ain’t no daisy.

Awesome post, Boydy.

I only imagine that if he sits out too long, he’ll miss out on learning the playbook (and practicing with the team) and by the time he catches up, it’ll be too late for him to play (just think if Simms actually does a good job, à la the Cassel/Brady deal. I originally thought the point of his signing, besides being a decent backup, was to light a fire in Jay to get him to play better). Or is possible to just pick it all up in a week?

oh, he lit a fire under Jay alright!

Jay will play, as boydy has said. He wants to be traded, as he himself has said. He won’t be traded, as McD has said. The Broncos will wait out this storm, as PNB said (in fact this is precisely what they have been doing, making comments only when they have to counter the ridiculous leaks from Cook). What will Jay be doing while the Broncos wait? Hopefully the same thing Simms is doing, studying the playbook and getting ready for fall!

Jay won’t hold out, now way.

1. He loses out on money and that’s what this whole thing has been about, more money for Jay and Bus.
2. It makes Jay a liar, remember “I play for my teammates” will come back to bite him in the rear.
3. It is about money, and the way to a bigger and better contract is not in sweatpants.
4. The Broncos hold all the cards, it’s not like he can go play baseball.

So say he relizes he has to forget this and play for the broncos for 3 years

wouldn’t you think this would all blow over and by that time he would resign?

Plus, after the three years

Can’t the Broncos franchise him for two more? Bowlen should get hold of Cook and tell him to stop the BS now! or that is what will happen.

Correct me if I'm wrong...

but whether or not we can franchise him or not after his contract is up will depend entirely upon the new CBA. I doubt the players union will allow franchising in the next agreement. I see the owners giving up the franchise tag as a concession to a rookie max salary and a lower portion of the profits going to the players.

On a different note, I completely agree with you boydy. We dont need to trade Jay. He is under contract. Make him play for us, and if he is still carrying a grudge in 3 years and wont resign with us, then we will cross that bridge when it comes. As it is, Jay is a Bronco, and will stay that way.

At least that would give us time to come up with a legitimate alternative at QB.

Great post, Boydy!

I agree, the leverage is Denver’s. Jay’s got 3 years left on his contract – here is what remains, from Rotoworld.com…

2009: $1.035 million (+ $100,000 workout bonus), 2010: $1.4225 million (+ $4 million roster bonus), 2011: $1.81 million (+ $12 million roster bonus) 2012: Free Agent. 45% of the deal’s max value is performance incentives. Among them is a $1.95 million escalator for any year of 2006-2010 that he finishes in the top five in any of the NFL’s major passing categories, as well as a $4 million bonus for taking 70% of the snaps in 2009. There also is a $500,000 bonus available 2006-2010 for taking 70% of the snaps and either taking 70% of the snaps in a Super Bowl or winning a Super Bowl.

So, he not only can’t force a trade, he has to play. He’s due no roster bonus this year, and only a $4-million bonus in 2010. His big bonus comes in 2011, and the rest are all incentives he must earn. Jay has no leverage, at all. As long as the Broncos can hold the line, they will eventually win out. Cutler has to play, there’s no way around it for him. I agree with the above comments – by the time he starts having success under McDaniels’ tutelage, all will be forgiven, if not forgotten.

13-3, Baby!

Whats next

What can possibly be Bus Cooks next move to keep the drama going? It looks like it would be cheaper to sit Cutler on the bench this year even if he did show up from the numbers I keep seeing. I sure don’t want to see that, but facts are facts. If I understand Simms contract right he would actually be making more than Cutler this year if he didn’t reach incentives. Is that correct? He needs to show and play his rear end off trying to impress everyone he can. Keep the faith!!
