PLEASE READ - This Will Be The Only Time I Say This - MHR Code of Conduct
I understand that emotions are running high and this subject can really drive a wedge into Broncos Country. We here at MHR are not immune to that, and I try to allow the community to police itself. The FanPosts are your tool to be heard; it is your voice.
It has started, however, to become a breeding ground of negativity. I have always maintained that I would step in, if necessary, to do whatever is in the best interest of the site and its community.
With that in mind, here are a few rules that will be followed from this moment forward --
- Any FanPost or FanShot with vulgarity in the title will BE DELETED, no questions asked
- Any repeat FanPost will be deleted. FanPosts that are nothing but Links, with text to meet the 75-word requirement will be deleted. If you come across news and want to post the link, USE THE FANSHOT SECTION! That is what it is there for!
- FanPosts that are misleading will be deleted. People come to MHR for their Broncos news and the integrity of the site will not be compromised because you want to be a stand-up comedian.
- Any comments that personally attack any other member will be deleted and the member warned.
- Any post or comment that refers to a player, coach or other prominent figure in a derogatory way will be deleted. We are all adults, act like it.
- Openly wishing or hoping that the Broncos fail tells me you are not a Broncos fan. At that point you are a Troll and will be dealt with appropriately.
***IMPORTANT*** These rules are in effect for everyone. Whether you have been with us from the beginning or are a brand new member, there is no favoritism here. There are no cliques. MHR has reached the point it has by being different than message boards, a cut above so to speak. I will not let us become the RMN or DP comment section, or a message board.
The above items will be added to the Membership Agreement you all agreed to when you joined. As a reminder, the original MA is below --
MileHighReport.com is an independent website dedicated to the Denver Broncos. We welcome fans of the Broncos to come to MHR and join other Broncos fans in talking about the Broncos as well as anything else that interests you. We also welcome the fans of other teams to MileHighReport and welcome good-natured smack talk that can go on between fans of opposing teams.
What we will not tolerate at MHR is any personal attack on any member. Have an opinion, state your case, disagree and debate, but keep it about football. Please keep your comments about the topic at hand. "Hijacking" a post will not be tolerated.
The Fan Shots and Fan Posts are yours! Utilize them to make a point, get involved, or just to meet fellow Broncos fans all over the world. We are a community, and like any community your are a part of we take care of each other.
Lastly, please remember this is just a game. Broncos football is a way of life for most of us but let's not lose sight of what we are here for and that is FUN. Enjoy the site, enjoy the game and most importantly enjoy each other.
Always keep in mind that most of us are true Denver Broncos fans and we all want the same thing. Tough times like these, like any in life, will pass and we will get back to the task of trying to win a Super Bowl. 2+2=4, but so does 3+1. There are different ways to get to the same result. Be Respectful of each other!
GO BRONCOS!
AS A REMINDER - Below are the difference between a FANPOST and FANSHOT. Keep that in mind when you are deciding which to post --
FanPosts - In Your Own Words
Every community encourages you to write your own blog posts. We call them FanPosts. If you have something to say about a trade, a game, a coach or last night's lousy lineup, take a few moments and express your thoughts in a FanPost. Once your FanPost is published to the blog's homepage, other blog members can recommend and respond to it.
FanShots - Share Your Discoveries
You know that video you found while searching YouTube for highlights of your favorite player? You don't need a full FanPost—the video speaks for itself. FanShots let you easily share quick hits like these with everyone on the blog.
Send videos, quotes, links, photos and chat transcripts to the frontpage of your community. You can even post that top 5 list you came up with on your lunch break
This is a Fan-Created Comment on MileHighReport.com. The opinion here is not necessarily shared by the editorial staff of MHR

I post on the DP site! It has become a festering, uncontrollable, quagmire of name calling and descension. Glad we can come in here and talk things out more maturely. Thanks....

Hey Guru, thanks for posting this.
I was going to say something, but I didn’t want to come off as ‘above anyone,’ because I’m most certainly not. I’ve seen this on other SBNation blogs as well. In my opinion, if you have to struggle or type “i have to get to 75 words” in order to meet the 75 word requirement, that right there tells you that your post belongs in the Fanshot section. Also, repeat posts and copied stories are probably better off in the FS section. The fact that I had seen this a lot less on MHR in my mind makes this one of the best pro football blogs in the SBNation network […but of course we already knew that :)].
Why do you think that happens though? Do you think maybe moving the ‘FanShots’ section up a bit on the main page would help or a link to this post either somewhere on the main page or included in the terms of service (so visitors in the future can see this) would help?
Anyways, thanks again for stepping in as always TSG. All this constant Cutler/McD “feuding” and news and satire news is starting to get to me.

That's a good point about the FanShots location.
I have my settings set to show 20 or 25 FanPosts so the FanShots are way the heck down the page and easily fortgotten. If you didn’t know to look for them there then it’d be easy to miss them altogether. I don’t know where you’d put them to make them more visible though.

That was my first instinct, too
It’s a site design issue. I bet Fan Shots would get a lot more use if they were more visible somehow.

Interior discussions about this are held all the time
basically they are stuck in a viscious cycle: because they aren’t used frequently (for multiple reasons, and HT recently advised that they aren’t necessarily “user friendly”, which is another possible knock against them) they can’t displace ad space, mastheads, content list, etc. Because they can’t move up the ranks, they aren’t frequently used.
Real estate is the finite resource here, and there is no easy answer, except to acknowledge that unless the slider has showed that you have scrolled to the bottom of the page, better keep scrolling! :)

Alrighty, thanks for the response.
I figured I’d just throw the idea out there, or at least try and think of someway to help dispel this situation somewhat. I’ve seen other sites have links to a ‘terms of service’ type page posted somewhere on the main page or links straight from the terms of service when you sign up as a member of the blog in the first place. Their pages pretty much outline what Guru said here: the difference between “Posts” and “Shots.”
Thanks again for the response. I just always noticed the FanShots section down below the Featured Stories, Contact Me, Draft Coverage (which is obviously amazing), AND featured poll. On other sites they lie directly below the FanPosts section. I’m not going to dispute any of the layout or design, because I actually don’t think there’s a problem with it. However, if there’s a way to help resolve this “issue” I just wanted to see if there was anything to be done. Guru’s post is a great step towards that.
Exhibit A: http://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2009/3/16/799000/here-gop-the-matt-jones-to
(I believe stuff like that post are the things that Papi referred to in his particular post and posts that I think would be better served in the FanShots section maybe with a link (in the case) to the story about Matt Jones’ release and the short blurb posted in the description.)

Two thoughts on Fan Shots vs. Fan Posts
1) Given the limitations styg mentioned above, we should as contributors and readers remember to give props to Fan Shots whenever we can, just to remind people they’re there and encourage their use. (gives self pat on back for correctly using three permutations of a common homophone in a single sentence)
2) If you are really passionate about posting something, it’s okay to use Fan Posts. Just make sure to do everyone the favor of honoring your use of the feature by using it properly. Don’t just try to beat everyone to the punch with a hot new developing story. (I’ve done this myself, I admit sheepishly.) Instead, take a little time to write your opinion about what it is you are posting. A few paragraphs summing up the pros and cons, the MSMs take, your take, ramifications from the past, implications about the future, maybe even a poll with well worded questions. That’s the stuff that makes this site really fun. We can’t all be Gurus, stygs, and HTs, etc., but we each have a brain, a passion, and an opinion and can use the feature for its strengths, with just a little effort.

gives self pat on back for correctly using three permutations of a common homophone in a single sentence
Hey man, you don’t have to give yourSELF a pat on the back, we’re all here for you. -virtual pat on the back-
I haven’t heard that homophone word in forever! I almost forgot what they were! And three in five words!
Anyways, your first point is a good one that we can follow. Heck, we can even expand upon some Fanshots as well…great source of material and ideas. If you want to ‘beat everyone to the punch’ with a quote or link or story you can always post it as a Fanshot and then post more later if you wish. However, what often happens is someone will post something first in the fanshot section, but no one will notice it and then a few minutes later someone will post the same thing in the fanpost section (maybe that’s because people feel they’ll get more notice and recognition in the fanpost section). Things like following your first point will be a step in the right direction.

Not sure how technically possible it is
But my suggestion for a design solution would be to put the fanposts and fanshots together at the top. Where it says “recent fanposts” would be become tabs saying “recent fanposts” and “recent fanshots” that we could then toggle between to see each list.

And that’s no name calling of our players, coaches or owner. If I’m reading a post or comment and “McDouche” or “Jaby” shows up, I skip right to the next post, but I’d rather not have anyone using that ’round here if it were up to me.

I agree with no negative namecalling.
However, I hope this doesn’t apply to creative nicknames. You’d put Papi out of business! Is “Jedi McD” off limits? Or “WaitUntillit’s Peyton Hillis!”? What if JaysGirl is calling him JayCuter? Is it still open season on Al Davis? OK seriously, I know there is a level of class we must maintain. But are positive nicknames still OK?

Thanks a lot for the kind words
While a lot of people bash me for wanting to see the Chiefs or Raiders at least get a little better (okay maybe not the Raiders), I’m glad there are fans out there like yourself who believe likewise. It’d be nice to get some respect back for the AFC West division (currently one of the worst in football…but thankfully not THE worst). Hoping the division gets better doesn’t make you less of a fan for your particular team at all. How about…Go AFC West! [okay…minus the Chargers and the Raiders, which brings us back to your closing remark, but that’s besides the point :-P]
It’s good to know that, like a good group of guys at MHR, there are guys out there who can be objective and honest and avoid the pointless name calling, trolling, and useless bashing of opponents. Good luck to you guys as well [except, obviously, when KC plays the Broncos ;-)].

If someone posts in the FanPost section something that normally is only 10 words, but they copy and paste it to be over 75, can you delete that? for example:
Subject: DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS!
Body: DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS! DENVER SIGNED DAWKINS!
Can you please delete those as soon as they are put loose on society?

If your post had been by itself it may have been able to stand on its own…but the law got laid down this weekend, perhaps a rewrite will make it all good, eh?

Thanks! I am fairly new around here (January), and I really appreciate this site and the community here. There is absolutely no better place for thoughtful discussion and analysis related to the Broncos.
One thought on the self policing. I suggest we all try to simply ignore fanposts that are loaded with negativity and simply there to get everyone riled up. Easier said than done, I know.

Question for Guru
Where is the line for a “derogatory” comment? For example, previously I’ve referred to McD as “Baby Hoddie”. Is that crossing the line? I admit I’m not his biggest fan at the moment (hoping he forces me to change my mind about that) and Baby Hoddie is clearly not meant to be a complement; however, I view it as a criticism (which I assume is allowed) rather than something derogatory in nature.
I’m new here though and do not want to cross any line.
Thanks for the help and guidance.

EG
I’ll give you both my personal opinion, then my “MHR Professional” opinion.
My personal opinion — I have no problem with criticism. I feel, however, when name calling ensues that the point you are trying to make gets lost in translation a little bit. I feel that way no matter what side of an argument I am reading. So, to me, I stop taking it seriously at that point.
MHR Offical Opinion — Your example is not crossing the line. The line gets crossed if you begin to hi-jack every Fan Post and Main Post with he same opinion. I think, by now, we all know where everyone stands. Let’s move forward and see if we can come back together somehow.
One thing I will point out for everyone, and I will be adding this to The Code — Openly wishing that the Broncos do poorly is not being a fan. t that point I will consider you a Troll and act appropriately. That is targeted at you, EG, just a general statement.

I like the tone of your post
First of all I am very new to this site……obviously these unfamiliar times of uncertainty surrounding our team are producing the change in MHR culture.
This is understandable in a way….speaking for myself, as a life-long Broncos fan I have never felt more disappointed with our offseason activity. It makes me uncomfortable and it is nice to let out some of that angst. Maybe I am taking it too seriously….but anyone who takes the time to come on a site like this is pretty serious about the well being of the team, yeah?
Anyways, I like the site a lot and I hope things start to take a turn for the better at MHR and Dove Valley.

It will all pass...
Two years ago in the 2007 off-season it was the Patriots on the hot-seat with the “did-they-tape-the-Rams’-walkthrough-or-not” drama (not!); the 2008 off-season was the All-Brett-Favre-All-The-Time soap-opera; and this year it’s the Bronco’s turn with McJaygate.
Next year’s off-season hot-seat? Who knows? But you all can just sit back and watch.

My hunch
Is that we may all be surprised to realize, a few years from now, looking back, that this may have been one of our most successful offseasons ever.
Nothing to prove it yet, of course, and to many it seems exactly the opposite, which is understandable.
Just a hunch, based on the nonsense resonating in my poor beleaguered brain. I sense an ultimate high coming after the ultimate low.

+1, etc. It helps to have a code of conduct and to have people try their darndest to abide by it (this dude abides). It’s understandable that things are particularly contentious right now but I have to say when I notice that fans of other teams are coming in here and behaving more appropriately and friendlier than some of us, it makes me arch an eyebrow. Don’t make me arch an eyebrow people! ;-)
I will also add, and please forgive me for this, but as a {cough, sorry) Dodgers fan, I also frequent the Dodger Thoughts blog now on the LA Times site and that blog’s creator has always had a list of commandments as it were on the sidebar that really help to keep the comments from becoming like any more typical forum. Maybe it’s more strict than you’d prefer but worth taking a look at.
Anyway, thanks again and I shall

Read it again...
Lot’s of posters hear have very negative views on McDaniels, on Bowlen, on X. Post your negative views. But be prepared to defend then as well. If you call McDaniels a liar, but prepared to support that statement or don’t make it. Likewise if someone call Cutler a crybaby, or just after the money, they too should be prepared to defend their position.
But, trying to should others down, being disrespectful, or using foul language is not expressing an opinion. It’s just being obnoxious. There are plenty of other places to do that.

Draft picks are a gamble and disgruntled players are a cancer. New coaches, new systems, mix & match defense. This is all hard to swallow.

I think almost all Broncos fans are disappointed to some degree...
Yes everything is in turmoil now and the Broncos may be quite a bit worse off for this trade; or they might get quite a bit better. More likely they will muddle through somewhere in the middle with fans equally divided as to whether the Broncos are actually better or worse.
Many fans thought everything was just fine under Shanahan – others felt change was needed. Who was right? We will never know. There is absolutely no way to know whether Shanny would have continued to wallow in mediocrity or whether he would have turned this thing around. Compelling arguments can and have been made both ways.
But they only guy who had a vote in the matter made a decision. Some fans supported that decisions; others were/are shocked by it. Bowlen hired a new coach. Some liked the choice; others hate the choice; some of us figure we’ll just have to wait and see.
McDaniels may or may not have handled the situation the best way possible. There are conflicting reports and none of us know, or will ever know, which is right.
Cutler may or may not have handled this situation well. I think his responses have been placed in an exceptionally negative spin by the media as of late. But it’s hard to not to say that there’s been some head scratchers there. Again we will never know.
BTW: most of my friends in Chicago are very disappointed by the trade.
by SlowWhiteGuy on Apr 3, 2009 1:08 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Disappointed?
Orton vs. Cutler – IMO there is no comparison. Your friends don’t want a 4000+ yd passer with a cannon arm and youthful elusiveness in the pocket? There is no downside to Jay for them right now.
Jay’s panties wadded up after the Matt Cassel debacle and then (you hit the nail on the head) the media made ugly – uglier. People gobble up what the media spews and Cutler instantly became a bed-wetter with a nook for a mouthpiece.
Make no mistake, our ex-Pro Bowl QB will make your Bears buddies very happy in about 8 months.

WINNING QBs don’t throw 2 TDs to 4 INTs in the last three games of the season, when you only need one win for a playoff berth

You're absolutely right
Those last four games were a disaster…..Cutler dropped the ball, along with 46 other players who dressed for those games.
Champ Bailey got burned repeatedly in the SD game and I don’t hear anyone calling for his “ProBowl” head…….you know?
It’s a double standard.
Honestly, before the Cassel crap, did you really want to get rid of Jay?

no
but i wanted him to improve, which he showed no signs of doing
learn to look off a safety, or check down through your progression instead of staring daggers into your primary receiver. he relies too much on his arm and doesn’t use his head when it counts. he also had too many turnovers in our own territory for my liking, making it pretty hard for an already awful defense to compete on a short field. also too many turnovers in the red zone
i used to be a die-hard cutler fan until mcjaygate happened. he has shown his true colors. respect is earned, not served on a golden platter, pro-bowl title or not
by lolcopter on Apr 3, 2009 2:45 PM MDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he will make them better...
maybe not. There’s a lot more to winning than just yards and he will have a worse O-line and less talented receivers to throw to. Plus now the Bears have fewer draft picks for additional players.
I’m just saying that there a many different views and all of them are based on speculation.

Just looking for clarification
Hi all. I’ve been a Bronco fan since I was around 6, back in 1970 or so. I cried when I was little because I couldn’t watch the orange uniforms on TV. As such, I have as much if not more history with this team than many of you, I’m sure. And I still remember what I was doing and where I was in 1983 when news broke of a little trade that would change the franchise forever.
Somehow I actually grew into a bigger hockey fan than football fan, and as such post over at MHH (SB nation Avalanche blog) much more than I do here. But I feel strongly enough about what has happened over the last month or so to have an opinion, thus have expressed it a few times lately. Now a few things in the post above are making me wonder if this is a site worth posting to and worth reading. One:
FanPosts that are misleading will be deleted. People come to MHR for their Broncos news and the integrity of the site will not be compromised because you want to be a stand-up comedian.
Now, obviously when I posted my “one-on-one with Josh ….” fanpost, I was expressing an opinion while also taking a stab at humor. Was that out-of-bounds? If so, why? Also from above in the terms of use:
Lastly, please remember this is just a game. Broncos football is a way of life for most of us but let’s not lose sight of what we are here for and that is FUN.
To me, it seems that some of the “guidance” posts lately are not in “FUN,” but are in fact taking things way too seriously. But maybe I’m just misinterpreting things? As a comparison, I love the atmosphere over at MHH. In contrast, the hated Wings have a non-SB nation blog called Abel to Yzermann, that is pretty much just one big circle jerk (uh oh, can I say that here?). And is, as a result, boring as hell. I’m hoping that this particular blog isn’t heading in that direction.
Oh well, just 2 more of my maybe unwanted cents. I’m still a huge Bronco fan. I think they made an enormous mistake in trading away (imo) the second best QB this team has ever had, and I think 5 to 10 years from now everyone will see that. But that is just my opinion, as a fan of almost 40 years. Who has seen way too many Kyle Ortons and Chris Simmses.
MHH: Shagging Dater one contributor at a time.

Bob...
You are fine. No worries. I just don’t want an entire list of Fan Posts with fake news. There are people here that are very good at satire. I’m all for it. I just don’t want to see completely made up stuff in the FanPosts…
I hope that makes sense.

Mile High Report By The Fans, For The Fans...
Right up until now…
"I understand that emotions are running high and this subject can really drive a wedge into Broncos Country.
So whats the implications here? In one breath you say post away and be heard and in the next you say don’t be negative. Are you implying that if we don’t agree with the current affairs of the Bronco Organization don’t post regardless of the facts and how a fan may feel if the impact was positive or negative to them. “to do whatever is in the best interest of the site and its community.” Well that smacks of censorship, forgive me if I am reading to much into this but …when you follow up with “breading ground of negativity” you are pretty much implying if you don’t agree with me and what I have to say then buh bye.
“Any post or comment that refers to a player, coach or other prominent figure in a derogatory way will be deleted. We are all adults, act like it.”
Define derogatory…set the boundaries just don’t leave it out there in the open (I would have sent all this in a email but you posted the thread) so that it’s at a whim or if you’re having a bad day or sore at someone because they don’t agree and you nit-pick.
Openly wishing or hoping that the Broncos fail tells me you are not a Broncos fan. At that point you are a Troll and will be dealt with appropriately.
Angry LAUNCH…. it’s obvious, censorship beyond the need. I m no troll by any means more or less the other side. All I have ever known was Broncos and Cardinal Football from way back in the days of the AFL and NFL. FINALLY they both went to suberbowls and thank goodness at least one of them walked away with some rings. However, I do wish the Broncos this upcoming season and as long as MC D is here they take it in the shorts form the PATS, BEARS, CHIEFS and or any where else Cutler or Cassel may land. That’s just how I feel about it. IS it trolling well i guess that remains to be seen.
I work on a site that has far more volume than here and far more angry and disgruntled people. The forums are full of piss and vinegar along with smack talking name calling and things in relationship to losing and winning. However we don’t make the rules up as we go along and there is very little Grey area because the limits are defined clearly as a matter of fact right to the letter. IF there is a change we notify everyone with the change via email and clearly define those parameters. If there is a violation they are warned sent an email and the course runs from there.
I think you are doing a good job here at times guru and at others I can just see you are overwhelmed. Get some help take your time and don’t rush in mad because responses like this “Openly wishing that the Broncos do poorly is not being a fan. t that point I will consider you a Troll and act appropriately. That is targeted at you, EG,…” along with the very basis of this thread will get you in all kinds of trouble faster than your head will spin. Just think about it before you put it out there.
I’ll send you an email as well. Thank you for all you do and the site.
by Good Templar on Apr 3, 2009 4:47 PM MDT reply actions 0 recs
I completely disagree.
I created MileHighReport to be a positive place for Broncos fans to congregate, somewhere they can go without fear of getting flamed for their opinions, or get criticized based on their “post count” or “reputation”. Those rules are in place to maintain the values I started when it was me posting, well, for only me. Those values haven’t changed because the site has grown.
Like you said, there are plenty of sites that incorporate negativity. People are more than welcome to go there. That is not what I am about. Does that mean you have to agree with me? No. Does that mean you have to take the company line? No. What it means is we act civil towards each other and act like adults. People can criticize the Broncos, Pat Bowlen, Josh McDaniels, or Jay Cutler without calling them names. That is what I am trying to avoid.
There is a flagging system in place that allows members to flag comments and posts. I react to those. That is how the site policies itself. I don’t search out things to “censor”, the community does it for me.
And I’m sorry, this is Broncos fan site. Filled to the brim with Orange and Blue kool-aid. I cannot in my right mind ever openly hope for and wish for, my favorite team to fail. I’m sorry. I started this site smack-dab in the middle of the Jake Plummer/Jay Cutler controversy when much of the same division existed in the fan-base. I held the same values then and I will now. As for the “That is targeted to you…” line, that was a typo, as the later comments revealed. It wasn’t targeted to EG. His comments are fine and I told him so.
As for my rules on Fan Posts, they are there for the community. Most of the members work very hard on what they post. I won’t let their hard work get buried because someone is posting one or two line comments over and over about the same thing. that isn’t fair to the community and from the feedback I have received they appreciate it.
I appreciate your feedback, and thank you for the time you took to post it. We are all Broncos fans, and for me and this site, I want the ones that want the team to succeed, that root for the name on the front of the jersey more than the name on the back and that can be critical and debate in a grown up manner. If that is unacceptable, then I am sorry but that has been the way I have done it from the beginning.
AS for being overwhelmed, absolutely not. I love this site and the members that have made it what it is, many that migrated from message boards because they were tired of the constant negativity, tired of feeling that their post count = their football intelligence and tired of the trolls. I have a good relationship with the guys at DenverBroncos.com, BroncosForums and The Mane and I would NEVER tell them how to run their sites. Anything I post over there I have explicit permission to do so.
I do not censor here, but I will not allow this site to stray from my vision for it, and what Broncos fans from around the world have come to rely on. For that I am not sorry and never will be….
I, too, will email this reply back to you, and would appreciate any further discussion about this be done between us.

Just one thing to say
I am /or was (still unsure where my emotions are following the last 90 days) a RABID fan of the Broncos but have never spent much time on football blogs.
The main reason is the unchecked venom of people that disagree. I may be off base here but I have posted a couple of times here and commented a few times and had rational discourse from multiple points of view.
Had I not found this blog I proably would have dismantled all of my Bronco memoriabilia and had a huge garage sale filled with 30 yrs of memories in my disgust over the way things played out over “the player”.
As it is I have enjoyed the outlet this site provides… and seen different points of view along the way. All discussions have been cordial, not to say everyone agrees, but I am A HUGE MHR fan now.
I’m still sorting out how vehenemently ??? I will root for the team but in the end I cannot change that I am from Colorado and the Broncos are the only team in the NFL to me so I will continue to read what others have to say and watch to see the product that lands on the field in 2009.
Thank you TSG
