Where is Shanahan?
It looks to me like it would be a better business decision to have McD getting paid to do nothing than for Shanahan. He isn't making $7 million a year. That said, I was OK with Mike leaving but I was a little concerned about how quickly Pat Bowlen hired McD. I like the thought of being more flexible on both sides of the ball. What I had hoped before he was fired was that Shanahan would hire Mike Nolan as our defensive cordinator. I like Reggie Rivers and I have to beleive that it isn't only Cutler who has a problem with McD and his wheeling and dealing. I couldn't believe it when he released Mike Leach who was one of our best special teamers.
I think it is interesting that the two new head coaches who are having issues with players are both from NE. Romeo and Charlie before them also have a reputation for knowing it all and not taking advice. One is gone and the other is on the hot seat.
I don't like the way Jay is handling this situation, but when your agent is giving you bad advice and you have no experience with this type of situation, I think it is easy to be manipulated by a self serving lawyer--eh--agent. It is obvious to everyone that neither the QB nor the head coach and GM have acted as adults. It is perhaps expected of a prima donna QB, but not from a head coach and GM who are responsible for making the whole thing work smoothly.
When changes are made, all the people in the organization are anxious. It is the responsibility of the leader to successfully lead them through the change. The most important part of that leadership is establishing relationships with people. Obviously, relationships haven't been made and it is embarressing that a great organization is now the laughing stock of the NFL. Someone needs to take charge and lead the Broncos through this mess, but no one seems to be willing to do that.
Suddenly, the firing of Mike Shanahan is becoming a big blunder not a bold move!

Well my first response would be Mike is laughing his ass off right now
I am not of the opinion that a change didn’t need to be made, I am not sure that I would of made it this year, I probably would of told Mike, you got one season to show improvement or I will ask you to resign as VP. But that is water under the bridge at this point, I agree, maybe bringing Mike back would be a welcome form of stability, but I doubt that would happen, too many egos going here to make that work.

I think that firing Shanahan was a decent move.
I believed that it would be hard to replace certain things that were good with him, and it is. He had handed toff much/most of the offense, and the youth of J. Bates was obvious and at times problematic, such as odd calls in goalline situations, dropping the run when it was working, etc. Shanahan’s personnel decisions seemed capricious at times – quickly adding a player from the PS. like lowry, starting him with little prep and immediately firing him when he played poorly in his 1st start. some of the drafting, and a revolving door on defensive personnel also come to mind. Mike wasn’t doing his job that well. I loved the guy (still do) but that’s a fact. And this isn’t either/or. We could have hired a coach with more experience, and some of us thought that we should have.
McD obviously doesn’t have great people skills. Look at the firestorm between Xanders and the Goodman’s. The public statement that they couldn’t work together after a disagreement really rang as an indictment of McD’s ability to get people working in one direction – obviously, it’ wasn’t his strongest suit.
He is young. Someone – Pats and or otherwise – wa going to leak the Cassel thing. It wasn’t smart. I can see his point – Cassel did a decent job, had better numbers than Cutler in several categories and won more, with a better D and a weaker O line. Cassel knows the offense, and it’s likely to be a ‘system’ offense – in other words, the player can be maximized if he doesn’t have the greatest arm, by playing to shorter plays and an emphasis on completins and checkdowns. I can see that, but McD, in his inexperience, didn’t think about the outcome if the deal didn’t go through.
He left Cutler not comfortable in their last discussion. He doesn’t know how to get someone onto his side, to get them excited about being within his program, and getting them to feel appreciated. I think Cutler is behaving badly, but we can also see that this is not one of McD’s strengths. If you hire someone who is inexperienced, don’t be surprised if that shows. Pat might have shown better judgement by stepping in and soothing the situation. Just because it’s a business doesn’t mean that you can’t go ouit of your way to make a player comfortable and feeling appreciated.
If McD’s talent on developing X’s and O’s bears fruit, in a year we’ll be thrilled. After this start, if it doesn’t, we’ll be ready to toss him under a different bus. Shanahan has to be feeling some personal satisfaction, but if you asked he might also experss his sadness for what Pat, his friend, is going through. Shanahan learned to put a good face on a lot of things. McD hasn’t yet.
But Bolen could have gotten someone with more real-world experience, and he didn’t. And in the end, that’s the decision I question the most.

Broncobear-you hit it right on the head
Part of effective leadership is letting your people know that you care about them. The obvious answer is that McDaniels did not care about Jay Cutler and showed it in the trade discussions. I do think Bus Cook is giving Cutler bad advice and an immature young QB is easily manipulated by an agent that handled Steve McNair and Brett Favre. But in the final analisis, I think Cutler is a Shananan type QB. They both like to roll the dice-high risk/high reward. At least Shanahan was a river boat gambler in the Super Bowl years and I think he saw Cutler as his way back to that. McDaniels is a system man and while I think Cutler could do it, it would be very foreign to his nature. I hope Cutler is happy wherever he ends up and lives up to his potential. In our diappointment, we shouldn’t forget the positive things he did in the community, especially for Rev. Kelly. My biggest concern now isn’t the loss of Cutler, but how accurate Reggie Rivers is in saying that there are veteran players in the locker room who think they could be traded because he has a relationship with someone else. To say nothing about ttheir thinking he will pay his friends more than he will pay them!

I keep remembering
A video of Al Davis after he fired Kiffin. Al is looking at the camera, and says: “I hired the wrong man.”
Will we have to see Pat Bowlen saying the same thing in a year or so?
Yet must thou sail after knowledge, knowing less than drugged beasts.

Sad, we have become a soap opera
I just wish Bowlen would step up and put people in their place now.

Maybe...
To some extent, but there’s no way in hell Bowlen parades for the media like that. That was a shame how Al Davis acted on national tv, fabricating everything like that (at least allegedly fabricating). Bowlen has too much class for that.
I hope that my avatar is a sign of things to come for a verrrrry long time :-)
