Shanahan and Cutler
I've been thinking about our current "situation" all day and part of me can't help but wonder if Mike Shanahan's coddling of Jay Cutler has hindered his progression as a quarterback in the NFL. Shanahan pumped up Cutler's ego since day one, since Shanny thought he had finally found his "next Elway." The kid has never shown a willingness to learn from mistakes or progress as a player, and instead continually relies on the strongest arm in western civilization. Shanahan was believed to be "unfireable" so there wasn't any really strong incentive for him to reel in his mistake-prone gun-slinger. It's pretty easy to blame losses on the defense when you conveniently forget about QB turnovers in our own territory (thereby giving the opposing offense a really short field). I think a little bit of job insecurity could have been beneficial for both Shanahan and Cutler.
I dunno. I just think Mike Shanahan might have done more harm to Cutler's career than good, in the long run. I was hoping that McD would come in and help Cutler progress into the elite QB that we all believed he was capable of becoming. It seems to me that Cutler believes he is already there. Getting to that next level requires a hunger, a willingness and desire to progress as a player and teammate. Jay Cutler has never been hungry, because Shanahan spoon fed him from the get-go.
I guess I'm just looking for other fan opinions. I love Cutler, but I respect McD... and I feel like he is getting the short end of the stick here... being jerked around by a greedy agent at the price of losing respect and control of a newly acquired locker room.

Good first post
I don’t really subscribe to that notion, if there is one thing Mike Shanahan could do, it was coach QB’s, look what he did with Steve Young, John Elway, he made Brian Griese look like a pro-bowler, he made Jake Plummer into a winning QB, and of all the QB’s selected the year of Cutler, only Cutler has shown progress through his 1st three years and has been better every year. I don’t see how he has coddled him, what did you want him to do, whip him when he came off the sideline after a pick, the point is that good HC know that every player is different and how to reach those players, I think Mike did a good job in getting Cutler prepared and ready.

Not a bad theory...
I tend to lean the other way though. Think of a young QB like you would an NHL goalie. If they live in fear that they will lose their job because of a bad performance, you get nothing but mediocre performances. A quarterback afraid to lose his job may be good, but he will NEVER be great because great players take risks.
Case in Point…Patrick Roy. Quite possibly the most superstitious whiner there has ever been. Literally demanded a trade during a game because of a feud with the coach. Also arguably the best NHL goaltender ever to play the game. Wouldn’t have lasted 5 years if his coach had taken the “tough” approach and threatened to trade him.

Great point
And how happy were Avs fans when he landed on our doorstep, I still ove his quote about not being able to hear Belfor because he had rings plugging his ears.

roy also
always scared the crap out of me… STAY IN THE GOAL!!! PATRICK WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!! oh… good save
i think it’s important for cutler to know he is the #1 guy, but at the same time realize that he is not jesus in shoulder pads. everyone makes mistakes, and everyone can improve, and it is the job of the coaches to help with this progression. i agree with broncoman that shanny was a great QB coach, i just tend to think he may have gotten a little too personal with jay, and allowed mistakes to continue so long as the relationship was solid. bates could have also better used jay stretching the field with that cannon arm instead of those screen passes, but alas…
i don’t think McD should threaten to trade Cutler, but he has repeatedly tried to get a face-to-face sit down and Cutler will not cooperate. i understand Cutler’s initial frustration, but he also has to be willing to accept constructive criticism. ugh, today is such a waste. at least tomorrow is st. patricks day!

Now is not the time...
For constructive criticism. I heard reported that the reason the conference call went so poorly was that McDaniels tried to list cutler’s weak points while explaining why he had an interest in Cassel.
As HC, he has got to understand that he is not dealing with widgets. As a coordinator, player relationships don’t matter. X’s and O’s are GOD. As the Head Coach, you are responsible to make sure that you get the most out of your players.
And they had a face to face on Saturday, but McD insisted on telling him once again that he was in charge and he will trade whoever he damn well pleases.

he can. the question I have for Cutler is “Can you deal with that?”

Shanny could have too...
But you didn’t see him reminding people of it.
As I have said elsewhere…the LAST thing you want your young QB to think about is the NFL as a BUSINESS!
Shanahan did not get fired...
Because of his relationship with Cutler.
Cutler was the one thing he still had going for him.
Shanahan got fired because he couldn’t put together a decent defense. and you CANT win games when you give up over 400 pts in a season.
You also need to remember...
Jay had Diabetes for most of his second season and didn’t know it. How good do you suppose he felt watching his passes fall short, his reads get worse and this health deteriorate for some unknown reason. The fact that he was upright was a friggin miracle, let alone seeing any growth as a player. really, this was his first Legit season and he made the Pro Bowl!
I would love to hear what Shanahan thinks aboutthis whole thing right about now
along with Marshall, Royal, and the rest of the team.
