Redskins talking about a 3 way trade for Cutler

http://www.dcexaminer.com/sports/Do-Skins-want-Cutler-41399007.html

The Redskins have serious interest in Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, an NFL source said Tuesday, and have entered talks about a possible three-way deal to acquire him.

Two NFL sources confirmed the possibility of a three-way trade, with Kansas City being mentioned by one source as a possibility.

The Redskins, through a team spokesman, denied interest in Cutler. However, a league source was adamant that Washington has shown interest.

“They’re trying to do something,” one NFL source said of the Redskins.

Hmm

Two things that bother me about this rumour:-

Why would the Chiefs want to trade with Denver? (I’m assuming they are inter-mating we’d get cassell)

Where do the Redskins get the cap space from to do the deal that “Bus” is going to want for Cutler….

by AlleyCat. on Mar 18, 2009 8:06 AM MDT reply actions

Not to mention

Redskins have Jason Campbell, and the Cheifs have Cassell. Why would QB discussions be going on with these teams?

Extension talks have all but died between Washington and Campbell.

The Washington Post

Methinks they may be interested in seeing where this whole Cutler saga is going before nailing Campbell down.

Interesting...

I was unaware that campbell was even in extention talks. I MUST get caught up on the rest of the NFL. Thanks for the info.

I love that about MHR, always flowing in information!

You're correct...

although Campbell wouldn’t wind up in Denver as part of the supposed 3 way trade.

Campbell

Please don’t trade Cutler for a can of Campbells soup…Or involve KC with anything…

by gunnermc on Mar 18, 2009 8:20 AM MDT reply actions

My guess

Cutler to Wash, Campbell to KC and Cassell to Denver, and some picks thrown in there somewhere.

Seriously, I don’t get the Cassell thing. Anyone?

Frankly, I think McDaniels is blowing it if he is that desperate to get Cassell.

Signature to be named later.

The only trade rumor I heard

Involving Washington was Cutler and Scheffler to Washington, Jason Campbell and Chris Cooley to Cleveland, and LaRon Landry/Brady Quinn to Denver. Stupid Madden trade proposal or something probably…

by Sayre Bedinger on Mar 18, 2009 8:28 AM MDT reply actions

well...the only thing that makes sense

to me is if we get Cassel from KC, Cutler goes to Wash and they send Campbell to to KC….

oh yeah, and we get Portis back as well as KC’s or Washington’s second round pick.

by Joe Medina on Mar 18, 2009 9:06 AM MDT reply actions

Noway.......

We trade cassel and a pick in any round for cutler! Maybe Cassel for cutler and your 2nd rd pick and then we would trade Cutler to washington for a player and a pick!! The only benefit to us having Cutler would be that he and LJ could have a shoulder to cry on!!

by CPT.Caveman on Mar 19, 2009 3:27 AM MDT up reply actions

Regardless,

Our 2nd rounder and Cutler for Cassel? I’m not laughing if that was meant to be a joke.

Besides… Calijoe’s suggestion doesn’t include Cutler to KC… Read the post… His suggestion is that Cutler would go to Washington and Campbell would go to KC.

Makes perfect sense

I agree Cali. That’s the ONLY trade I’ll be happy with!

by BroncoBaby1987 on Mar 18, 2009 10:28 AM MDT reply actions

Get in your rocket ship and return to Earth

How could that make any sense. Now, I’ll start by saying I’m a Chiefs fan, but that aside, lets look at the REALITY of the situation:

McDaniels and Cutler have created a major problem for Denver. The Broncos are probably not in the position of strength in these negotiations. In a three-way swap, someone usually gets a bit screwed and unfortunately, if something like this goes down, its gonna be Denver.

Its obvious the McDaniels covets Cassel and Cutler had all but bought a house somewhere else. If the Redskins are truly interested in making a deal, and the Chiefs are even listening in on the three-way call, it must be pretty cherry deal for the Chiefs. Especially considering we are divisional rivals.

I see two scenarios (for this improbable rumor): One, the Broncos want the #3 pick to draft a QB to replace Cutler and some package of the Broncos and Redskins first round picks is necessary to get it. Cutler could command Washington’s #13 (the #3 pick would be worth a bit less than #12 and #13, so there would have to be another low round pick to the Broncos from the Chiefs).

Two, the Chiefs trade Cassel, but that would likely garner two firsts to the Chiefs. I know, we got him for a second, but again, we are division rivals and teh Broncos are in a low power position.

There is no way we would do a Cutler-Cassel-Campbell three way swap. I mean, seriously?

by emo3131 on Mar 18, 2009 10:48 AM MDT up reply actions

Denver won't involve themselves in a trade where...

they get rid of Jay and get a high pick in return. The financial guarantee for a top 5 player is may more money that Denver would even pay Cutler if they DID redo his contract, so that would just be stupid.

We all need to stop buying into these rumors about trades. Nothing’s going to happen for a long time, Denver’s not getting Cassel or Quinn or Anderson or Campbell.

Denver has Cutler and he’s not just better that those guys, its not even close.

As long as McDaniels and Xanders and Bowlen stay unwavered in their desire to have Cutler under center on opening day, they will get what they want. Now, in the meantime, “sources” will say just about anything and stories and innuendo will reign supreme, but if they stick to their guns, I think they’re gonna get what they want. Cutler won’t miss training camp. I know that much.

by super7 on Mar 18, 2009 11:01 AM MDT up reply actions

The Broncos ARE "screwed"

in a deal that lands Cutler elsewhere and either Cassel or Campbell here. Also Cutler still has a condo in Denver and the market is quite volatile here so I think it’s a stretch to draw inferences based on that. Why not say he asked to be traded? Thats a pretty good indicator he wants to leave.

In any event, Denver IS in some position of strength here. One being Cutlers’ contractual obligation, another being competition from other teams for his services.

That said, I agree with you that a Cutler, Cassel, Campbell swap seems unlikely. There would have to be more intangibles involved at this point for KC to swap Cassel for Campbell. But two first- rounders for Cassel? It sounds like you sir, will need more rocket fuel than us…

by ThunderBringer on Mar 18, 2009 11:08 AM MDT up reply actions

My point exactly - there is no way this trade should go down

Denver is best served to keep Cutler and tell him to man up

“It sounds like you sir, will need more rocket fuel than us…” That was good.

by emo3131 on Mar 18, 2009 11:16 AM MDT up reply actions

Do not want Cassell's franchise 1-year contract

Brilliant move by the Pats. No way we should overpay for the guy.

by Leukadian on Mar 18, 2009 10:35 AM MDT reply actions

any trade will be a bad one for us...

there is no way that we would get anything worth Cutler. I have been very strong in my stance on this. When you have a franchise player, you have no choice but to cuddle him and do what it takes to keep him happy. Cutler is one of the top players in the NFL and the Broncos must do what it takes to keep him happy for the next decade. You don’t trade a player like Cutler and expect to be ok. Trading Cutler would set our franchise back years. Pat Bowlen needs to step in and make our “coach” and Cutler work this out.

by LVElephant on Mar 18, 2009 11:55 AM MDT reply actions

I doubt that we're 'screwed'

We have him under contract for three years. Do you think that we’ll sit him, play Simms, and he won’t want to play? If this silliness gets past OTCs, I would suspect that we’ll be seeing Jay next year. He isn’t making that any easier, but still….

Hillis in '09

by Doc Bear on Mar 18, 2009 12:32 PM MDT reply actions

Sit him?

If Cutler plays that card, and refuses to show up to anything…That’s some weak sauce, I would sit him too. I don’t think it will go that far, I think if he doesn’t show up on April 17th he’s getting traded…Than again he would be getting what he wants…Damn, Cutler hurry up and realize this is some BS it might be hard walking into the coaches office by yourself but it will feel ten times better walking out knowing you’ve fixed this mess.

by gunnermc on Mar 18, 2009 1:54 PM MDT up reply actions

Interesting thought...

Colt Brennan anyone?? I know he hasn’t played much at all and many think he’ll be a bust in the NFL, BUT he could make a good project QB for McD. Ultimately I’d still rather keep Jay but these guys both seem pretty hell-bent on having their own way… Thoughts?

Profootballtalk

denounced this rumor yesterday. It started on a message board that Mike Florio was writing on.

Cutler, Marshall, and Scheffler to Detroit for Calvin Johnson, 2009 First Round Pick (20), 2009 Second Round Pick (33), and 2010 First Round Pick (?).

Get it done, McD.

What can you do for a team with 4 picks that early? I'm salivating at the combonations.

by broncodude793 on Mar 18, 2009 2:33 PM MDT reply actions

Colt Brennan

I’ll take draft picks and a throw in of Colt Brennan. He played in a similar offense for Hawaii.

by 8r0nc8 on Mar 18, 2009 2:36 PM MDT reply actions

Correct me if I'm wrong but...

Cassel is under a 14.5 mil franchise deal. A franchise deal is 100% guarenteed, so if KC traded Cassel they would have to eat 14.5 mil in dead cap room. If this is the case they would be idiotic to trade him.

by Papamag on Mar 18, 2009 6:28 PM MDT reply actions

Not so sure...

Cassel was under this same deal with the Patriots…and they traded him. The trade helped to create salary cap room for them.

by 8r0nc8 on Mar 19, 2009 12:54 AM MDT up reply actions

Cassell was franchise tagged

so the any team getting him would have to pay him top 5 money to get him letting the pats off the hook.

by prototype on Mar 19, 2009 8:43 AM MDT up reply actions

No.

This is bull, nothing is actually going on.
