Opinion - "Cutler Could be Gone by Weekend"

I recenty published this article to Bleacher Report, and here it is in full.

Take a good look Broncos fans. All of those hundreds and thousands of dollars spent on No. 6 Jay Cutler jerseys are about to all go to waste. ESPN.com's rumor central is reporting that this weekend could be Cutler's "last with the team" and that "four teams have contacted the Broncos" in regards to the Pro Bowl quarterback.

While only four teams have contacted the team about Cutler's availability, the number is expected to increase at the annual owners' meetings next week.

In regards to the compensation Denver would receive, an unnamed NFL executive told the Denver Post that "They should be able to pick a quarterback off a roster and get two No. 1's - one this year and one next year."

For all of you who thought that two first round picks was too much for Cutler, you were wrong.

Way wrong.

In fact, if this report is correct, the Broncos will not only receive two first-round picks, they will also receive a quarterback in return for Cutler's services.

Right now, the most likely destination appears to be Cleveland, as they have two quarterbacks that they could offer in Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson. If the unnamed executive's prediction of compensation is true, the Broncos will likely be able to get Quinn/Anderson, B.J. Raji, and either Rey Maualuga or a number of other prospects.

As much as people think this will set the Broncos back, it truly will not. Denver's offensive line is arguably the best in the NFL, and whatever quarterback lines up under center will stay fairly clean.

Denver's offensive line only allowed Cutler to be sacked 11 times last year.

Also, Denver has one of the best offensive nucleus' of talent in the NFL.  Wide receivers Brandon Marshall, Brandon Stokley, Eddie Royal, Tony Scheffler, Daniel Graham, Jabar Gaffney, and Chad Jackson all are very capable targets for whatever quarterback will throw to them.

Rest easy Broncos fans, the compensation for our star quarterback will be relatively fair, and as much as I hate to see the Jay Cutler era end like this, it is for the best of the team. Cutler has become a distraction, and it is time to move on.

Apology

Oxmouth, I recently got on this website and saw the comments someone had made under my account. My 16 year old brother decided it would be funny to be an a**hole to other members. I apologize for the absurd comments that have no business being on this website. I assure you that this will not happen again, as I have threatened my little bro. in every way possible.

thanks

I appreciate the fact that you admitted the problem.

Many of the recent posters have exhibited suspect motives, so all topics & posts which appear here that display certain suspicious traits are scrutinized for ‘flame’ tendencies. It’s not that easy ‘put one over’ on us, although I will often play along with the ruse to see if the person will ‘reveal themselves’ for what they are.

Curiously, much of the Cutler-gate issue has been riddled with suspect reporting which, although written by supposedly professional journalists, has the appearance of a malicious Internet rumor campaign. A heavy dose of skepticism is an advisable safeguard for dealing with all unverified information of any kind — especially when it comes from journalists. Much of the recent controversy has been contrived. I’ve yet to fully cover that issue, although I expect to do so at some point, in response to the ill-motivated posters, as well as in reponse to PR efforts that appear to originate with Bus Cook.

Speaking of which

There was an article I refused to read on ESPN the title of which read something like “Agent reveals where all went wrong between Cutler and the Broncos”. This was/is on the front page.

Like I suspected, the story had fallen off the front page, so Cook decided to call a reporter and ‘explain’ Cutlers side so that it can’t or won’t be forgotten. Though, I honestly don’t know if Cook reached out of if he was the contactee.

I hate this.

Is this it?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3995461

Bill Williamson’s “Agent explains Cutler’s timeline.”

What’s interesting is that Cutler’s rationale is now a “broken promise,” that is — a broken promise to not to get rid of coaches such as Bates.

This would confirm what I’ve been saying — that Cutler has been contemplating leaving for a long while. The report that he demanded a trade after Bates wasn’t retained, is now looking much stronger, since we basically seeing him continuing with the same posture he adopted at that time.

And the betrayal stagecraft, such as “broken promise,” “lied to,” etc., is merely milking the dramatic possibilities inherent in language and the situation.

I would have liked to see them keep Bates, too, but he didn’t know the new offense. We would have had to teach him at the same time he was supposed to be teaching Jay — it wasn’t a workable outcome.

It’s quite understandable that Jay didn’t like this, but attempts to morph it out of the original betrayal story are deceptive. Cutler, and his agent (or course), haven’t been selling that story but something else — a ‘I was offended by trade talks’ story. There was no inability to tell the ‘real’ story if thats true, so all this posturing has been a charade on his part. I can’t fault only the Bus here, Jay’s seems to have been playing us, too.

Bowlen, however, says he doesn’t remember having the conversation with Cutler that Cook references.

So, do we think Bowlen is lying, or that his memory is poor? Or is something amiss here?

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 3:44 PM MDT up reply actions

a little more

I really have had no discussion with Jay or the agent. Mike was fired right after the season. At that point, there was no need to have a discussion with Jay. Now, actually, to be fair, I don’t think I had that discussion. I don’t recall it. I know I’m getting up there in age, and I am not sure of that discussion,” Bowlen told NFL.com.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 3:57 PM MDT up reply actions

From Bowlen at the press conference after he fired Shanahan
“I talked to (QB) Jay Cutler, and Jay understood the conversation. I talked to him this morning. I didn’t get any negative feedback. I think he understands enough about the business of football, the game of football, that there are going to be coaching changes and changes in organizations. I didn’t sense that Jay had any negative feelings about it, and I’m sure he is very interested in who is going to be the next head coach. Obviously, he is the man around here now, so I will be talking with Jay.”

This will probably come off as flippant, but I am actually starting to worry a bit about Bowlen. Between his speech at Zimmerman’s HOF induction, the sudden decision to fire Shanahan, his reversal of position on Jim Goodman (at the same press conference he said “Jim Goodman has his job, and he will have his job.”) and his comments/conduct in this Cutler fiasco and I am beginning to wonder if everything is all right. Hopefully, it is nothing more than a mid life crisis of sorts and him deciding to shake up the team more than he initially planned

by MattR on Mar 19, 2009 4:07 PM MDT up reply actions

on a less flippant note

Good find. Bowlen’s contemporaneous comment after the conversation referenced in the last ESPN article citing the Bus don’t offer any support for the “promised Jay no changes” story the Bus is selling us.

Is the Bus getting confused? Mixing his made-for-the-media narrative with real world events?

And, of course, doesn’t this shifting storyline completely contradict the earlier “I was offended by trade talks” story? If you wanted out all along then why would you be offended if they were trying to grant your request?

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 4:26 PM MDT up reply actions

Like in any conversation, each person remembers what they thought was important

I am kinda guessing that Bowlen does not remember the details because to him it was just one more “insignificant” conversation during a crazy period of time. By insignificant, I mean that Bowlen was not saying anything that he considered to be newsworthy or important. He was just shooting from the hip and telling Jay what his thoughts were at the time. On the other hand, this same conversation was a huge deal to Jay. He was clearly traumatized by Shanahan’s firing and so he saw Bowlen’s reassurances as very important (and possibly the entire reason he wanted to talk to Pat).

Personally, I don’t think Cutler ever really wanted out of town prior to the Cassell talk going public. He was just an insecure, young man dealing with changes going on all around him. I think Cutler was upset that Shanahan was fired, then got reassured by Bowlen that the team was not making a drastic shift offensively, then got upset again when Bates was let go and was reassured by McDaniels.that McDaniels wanted him and wanted to coach him and build an offense around him.

by MattR on Mar 19, 2009 4:53 PM MDT up reply actions

on lying

There is a lot of truth to what you say. We all remember our version of events, to some degree.

It’s when something contradicts that in a massive way that objectivity comes into play. Bowlen would in fact remember making a promise that was later broken, because the salience of that event has reached astronomical levels.

Bowlen could forget something that he regarded as insignificant, but he could not forget making an actual promise, if that indeed was what it was.

There was an intention to keep Bates, the Goodmans, etc., but it was decided to go another way.

An actual promise would be remembered by both parties (and certainly Bowlen, a lawyer). Cutler can say that he had an ‘understanding’ of sorts, but the claim of a broken promise is not believable. Bowlen would remember this.

Claiming that one party to an agreement has a faulty memory (and not yours, of course) is very poor argument.

The ‘broken promise’ is standard plot device in the PR arsenal of the Bus.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 5:14 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree that no promise was made

And sadly you have pointed out why an agent does want/need to be involved in all communications between his client and their team. It is not shocking that there could be a miscommunication between a 65 year old lawyer and a 25 year old not used to talking to lawyers. I can easily see Bowlen choosing to use word X instead of word Y because there was a large distinction in his mind while Cutler thought of X and Y as interchangeable.

Hey MattR

On a side note, it’s good to read you again. Been awhile.

It's been a perfect storm

The past month or so keeping me busy. Lot’s of stuff going on at work. Took a vacation. Been sick. And the whole Cutler thing has just ruined my offseason (I say as I sit here posting in a Cutler thread)

I do have to give a tip of my hat to Pro Football Talk which is where I first saw that Bowlen quote. As I posted over there, if you look at that last sentence you can see why Cutler might have thought he had a special relationship with Bowlen, more than a typical employer-employee situation.

by MattR on Mar 19, 2009 5:52 PM MDT up reply actions

Yes

I would’ve assumed that too given his relationship with Elway. Honestly, in view of the whole Reeves/Elway conflict, I’m surprised Bowlen hasn’t taken a more proactive approach to this… unless there’s more than meets the eye here.

Not to go too far off, but I’ve wondered… When Charlie Weiss took over at ND, he was extremely tough on Brady Quinn. He, Quinn and others commented at different times that off-season on how much Weiss would yell at him. Reading Gaffney’s comments the other day about Josh being in the Belichik mode and recalling seeing even Tom Brady getting yelled at in practices and how that told the team that no one was above criticism, etc. reminded me of Weiss’ coaching style. I wonder if McD, Bowlen et al think Cutler can take that kind of treatment. He’s always been coddled, from HS, through Vandy and even here in Denver. Shanny was very honest that he preferred to provide his guys with security, while at the same time sticking to playing the best player. I remember him saying not every player can handle that kind of situation. Now it looks like the opposite, McD follows that “no one is safe” mentality. It wouldn’t shock me at all if he doesn’t think Cutler can handle that kinda heat from his coach and is why no one is offering all kinds of reassuring words. In fact, some of those “unnamed sources” even stated that Cutler responded to loyalty with loyalty. He’s one of those guys that responds well to being told “you’re the man” and no worries. It’s not all good or bad, just different. But it looks like it may cost the team their star QB.

or maybe not.

by pubkeeper on Mar 19, 2009 6:39 PM MDT up reply actions

put it this way -- it's not about memory

Either no promise was made or someone is lying.

It’s not that memories can’t vary, memory is ‘synthetic’ — we interpret our memory to reconcile it with current events, current beliefs, etc. But nobody forgot whether a promise was made, in this instance. Somebody is lying or misrepresenting the truth.

I find the latest reconstruction of events to show first a broken promise then lying to conceal an embarrassing detail — the trade talk — is a little too post hoc for my tastes. Maybe it works on As the World Churns but it’s lost it’s real world credibility. For all his many contacts with the media, how is it that the Bus forgot to mention this highly significant fact?

I’ll expand on this later.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 5:59 PM MDT up reply actions

I just went back and read that ESPN article

“broken promise” is a phrase the reporter uses (Michael Smith I think). It was not uttered by any of the prinicpals involved and is not mentioned in the nfl.com article by Thomas George who was the one who actually spoke to Cook and Bowlen.

by MattR on Mar 19, 2009 6:09 PM MDT up reply actions

doesn't matter

actually. I’m using tropes to refer to psychological plot elements. We’re supposed to understand it as a “broken promise” because that’s something everyone can understand.

Bus wouldn’t pitch “he failed to involve me in the planning or our offense” because that would sound dry and technical. Broken promises we understand in emotional logic. Failure to keep a promise is both implicit and explicit in the scene the Bus is creating.

The implicit level is the “framing” that goes on in our brains that categorizes events as ‘betrayal,’ etc. These schema are also easily accessed, so they’re easy to tap into.

The explicit level is more on the surface. “Making assurances” is just a synonym for a promise. This could stand up in a court proceeding. Failure to abide by those assurances could be a harm — a tort.

There’s a time to parse words, and I go much, much farther than most. And there’s a time when you have to back way up in order to see the forest.

The owner assured him everything would be fine. The owner said he had the second-best offense in football and would leave the offensive staff intact. Jay was good with that. Then he hires an offensive coach who gets rid of the staff," Cook told
NFL.com.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 7:03 PM MDT up reply actions

the reason i brought up "broken promises" versus "assured"

Was your point that a promise is something so explicit that it cannot be misremembered. It either happened or it didn’t. I agree with that. If only one half of a conversation remembers a promise being made, somebody is almost definitely lying. But I just don’t think that applies to the word assured, which is vaguer and has a broader range of meanings to different people.

I agree that there is little difference between the explicit “I promise you that I will do X” and “I assure you that I will do X”, but assured can also be used in less absolute ways. A simple comment like “Don’t worry. I am not gonna mess around with a good thing” is clearly not a promise, but it is not unreasonable for the person hearing that to come away feeling assured that things were not going to change.

by MattR on Mar 19, 2009 7:36 PM MDT up reply actions

I'm doing several things here

I expected the latest story change and I’m drawing on several things here, one, the problems with mis-remembering something so salient and, two, the use of rhetorical techniques [LINK] to elicit sympathy in Cook’s PR campaign. This is the implicit level, the dramaturgical logic.

A hard promise would be remembered. An assurance merely means that he’s disappointed in the direction of the team. Cook’s a liability lawyer who’s (apparently) mastered the art of making the opposite side look very bad. That’s what they do.

The problem is that Bus has to make it look like Cutler was wronged in some way. So, he has to show that Cutler was made a promise (in some form) in order establish him as the wronged party. It’s tort logic.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 9:10 PM MDT up reply actions

a small correction

The Bus’ story makes one important modification:

Cook has formally requested a trade on Cutler’s behalf, but contrary to reports, he says he didn’t immediately demand that his client be traded.

“Jay met with the coach early on and then told me everything was going to be OK. He said, ‘We are going to work this out; we are on the same wavelength.’ Everything was fine until Saturday two weeks ago,” Cook told NFL.com.

It would be fatal flaw to their narrative if they claimed to have wanted the trade all along. Bus cites a promise, however, that DOES trace the source of the disagreement back to then — but ignore that contradiction as the type of element only intelligent, thinking people would notice; Bus is shooting lower than that.

Bus’ narrative has to at least present the disagreement as a series of problems caused by the Broncos leading to a final, irreconcilable conclusion. This is the ‘superficial’ aspect of the story that relies on ‘emotional logic’ for it’s continuity.

Also — The “I was offended by the lying; not the trade talk itself” narrative shift is a little like arguments I’ve heard on the Civil War not being about slavery. Some argue that it was about nullification, which is a way of saying it was about the slave states being able to dissolve the union. It would be far better to say the slave states wanted to dissolve the union because of slavery.

This is a long-winded way of saying that Cutler’s story of being offended about the lying about the trade is not believable without reference to what was supposedly being lied about. He could only be offended by the lying if the lie covered an act that was itself offensive. To use an example — wives don’t get mad at their husbands for lying about cheating; they get mad about the cheating itself.

It's a freaking rumor

First off, I don’t see why we would wnat Anderson, his salary is significantly higher than Cutler and his talent is significantly less, Quinn is a noodle armed chump that adds no value, if Mangini doesn’t want him running the same offense as New England, why would McDaniels want him. Sorry, but I am about through discussing the trade rumors, since most of them seem to be generated from other bloggers and really have no merit.

Tony Scheffler hasn’t even bothered to show up. He, like Cutler, quit the Broncos long before Feb 28. Its sort of odd, though. I didn’t know guys who average 10 appearences a year, and who get completely neutralized for entire games, were in a position to blow off teams in this league.

Long story short, you can take him out of any discussions of a Bronco nucleus. Unless he is tacked onto to some Cutler deal, he might command a Foxworth like price on the trade market. Might.

Bring it on. he'll be a poster boy for the Broncos.

Doesn’t everyone in the league want an Abercrombie model leading their team to the SB? I know I do, because the fact is you can win a super bowl and it’s sweet….but if you win one with a model behind center, it’s REALLY sweet. haha.

Even in the event he’s not a good quarterback, he could model some of the new broncos merch at the Pro Shop.

How can a guy with pipes like that have a noodle arm

It’s crazy how arm strength has nothing to do with muscle, that I can tell. I mean a lot of pitchers are skinny 6’2" guys who probably couldn’t bench 100 but can throw a ball 90mph+

I knew this guy who never worked out, unless you consider a curl to be lifting a can of beer from the table to the mouth, and yet could throw balls so hard they could kill you. It’s strange. It must be the ligaments or something.

We don't devote nearly enough scientific research to finding a cure for jerks. - Calvin

by solace on Mar 19, 2009 1:04 PM MDT reply actions

The secret formula

is that the QB isn’t “pushing” the ball out, with big strong arms, but “slinging” the ball out, like a rock in a sling. Same with a baseball player

The measurement that matters isn’t a “power” measurement, such as bench reps, but the angular acceleration of the ball in relation to the QB (connected by the hand and arm, of course). Leaner, longer arms can throw a ball farther, because the length of the “lever”, the arm, increases the rotational velocity at the end of the arm. The ball becomes hyper-accelerated throught the throwing motion, which is another reason you look for a QB who sets his body up correctly. When a QB starts with pressure ont he backfoot and follows through the throwing motion moving pressure to the front foot, they add momentum to the upper body, which in turn increases the angular momentum of the arm through the throwing motion. through all of this, more power is needed in the core of the body than anywhere else, because it is what makes the QB accurate.

Amnesty, the idea that you can forgive transgressions against you, gives as much to one side, as it does the other. It has the noble quality of bestowing mercy to both parties.

torque

is the holy grail of angular momentum. In mathematical terms that is the point at which energy transfers.

Excellent point! Without the torque, everything else is for naught.

I'm not forecasting this ordeal

but the fact that Bowlen has now come out and said, and I’m paraphrasing, “I don’t recall having that discussion with Jay…there was no need to have that discussion with the QB,” when discussing Mike Shanahan’s firing, sort of tells me this thing may be coming to an end. In addition, and in more direct fashion, when Bowlen says, “I would like to keep him here, obviously. But if you are going to be an unhappy camper, there is no real reason to be here.” That signifies to me that Bowlen has come to terms with the fact that Cutler will not settle this thing and the choice to move him is inevitable. I hate that it has come to this, but I definitely do not disagree with the premise of this post which is we may see the Cutler era end shortly.

I can say that I’m hanging in there anticipating what will happen, who we’ll get in exchange and what McD will do around this new QB.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 4:02 PM MDT up reply actions

a more credible report, but sources?

The idea of two #1s and Brady Quinn has the sound of something that would be acceptable, although considering there’s no source to evaluate, it has to be filed in the rumor pile for now.

I got a positive ‘vibe’ on the Quinn rumor, but I have to wonder how receptive Cleveland would be. On the other hand, getting Cutler in return would eliminate the source of the reluctance, so it’s plausible. There’s no point in examining this idea as if it’s an actual proposal — though. It’s only an idea floated by credible source who’s offering us his opinion of what Cutler could bring, combined with a plausible trading partner.

by Colinski on Mar 19, 2009 1:18 PM MDT reply actions

Detroit is where I would be raiding

I would trade Cutler and Scheffler for:

Lions – 20th & 33rd in 2009, 1st in 2010…. They will still have 7 picks in 09 and Cutler will help Detroit win a few games but not enough. The 2010 Detroit pick will put us into Taylor Mays territory!! MMMM Mays!

Get a hand picked McD’ QB in any round he is so good they don’t have to be taken in the first…(they come in a value meal, you get a toy with it) , so at 12 grab Raji, Cushing. Rey Rey, whoever, then at 20 grab Knowshon to soothe the burn of losing, then use the 33rd for Delmas, the 48th for Ron Brace and the McD’ QB meal and we are set!

Silver lining?
In regards to the compensation Denver would receive, an unnamed NFL executive told the Denver Post that “They should be able to pick a quarterback off a roster and get two No. 1’s – one this year and one next year.”

Still holding out hope for a Cutler-stays resolution, at least there is the potential for some good value in a trade.

or maybe not.

by pubkeeper on Mar 19, 2009 2:51 PM MDT reply actions

we essentially get 2 plus a quarterback…

by Joe Medina on Mar 19, 2009 8:07 PM MDT reply actions

Not quite right.

We traded a lower first round and a second round to the Rams fort their 11th overall pick to get Cutler.

So it’d essentially be:

a first round (15th) and second round (68th) and a superior QB (maybe one of the NFLs greats)

for

two first rounds and an inferior QB (there’s not a QB as good as Cutler available).

And given how excruciatingly difficult it can be to get a good QB, let alone a possibly great one, I really don’t see it as much of a deal at all. In fact, I’d say we’re getting screwed.
