MHR Community Mock Draft--Pick #1

With the #1 pick in the 2009 MHR Community Mock Draft, the Detroit Lions select....

OLB Aaron Curry, Wake Forest

Detroit Lions

Round 1, Pick #1 overall

GM McDah

Details of the pick after the jump...

Star-divide

The Wake Forest Demon

From GM McDah:  Aaron Curry is as good as they come. The lions need a sure thing with the #1 pick. They can’t afford to have a bust. Come on lions fans you know the names of the past eight years of first round picks: Gosder Cherilus last year (I'm not kidding you), Joey Harrington BUST, Charles Rogers bust, Mike Williams bust, Ernie Simms bust.  Plus a linebacker will cost them a lot less money at #1 then a quarterback.

Almost everyone seems to agree that Curry is one of the best prospects available in this draft and it’s pretty rare to see such a uniform consensus on a player. Aaron Curry is a special player that we can build our defense around.

I’ve said it before and ill say it again Matthew Stafford looks like Phil Mickelson with Down syndrome. TimTebow, Sam Bradford, and Colt Mccoy are all arguably better the Matthew Stafford and they are all going out next year. Dante Culpepper can be the starter this year. This will make them competitive but also insure they will lose enough to be in the top 10 again. The lions can get their quarterback next year. The Lions still have two more premium picks (#20 and #33) to beef up their offensive line.

The Matt Millen era is over  and we won't be bullied into taking another player that could end up on our long list of busts.

Commish's Comments:  Love the pick.  It is a solid play, grabbing a guy who will be worth every penny he gets paid, with little chance of a burn.  Detroit simply can't afford a mistake at #1, and this pick sets up the rest of their draft like dominos.

ON THE CLOCK

St.Louis Rams are up next, and with the top defensive player off the board, the Rams have their choice of top offensive prospects.

The deadline for this pick is 5 PM MST, March 20th (tomorrow).  As long as I receive the pick by that time it will be valid.  To send me the pick, just email me at the address shown in my profile.

So

If I am hearing you guys right they beefed up and got a good player at the position so they don’t need to draft BPA with the #1 pick? also we loaded up on RB but there are still some who want a RB with #12.

Correct

They beefed it up so they could focus there number #1 on the O line. They figure they want to give there qb a chance to throw a pass.

Just my thought though

Not trashing the pick by any means. It would be very difficult to pass his talent up.

Seahawk fan here...

And closet Detroit Lion sympathizer. (How could a guy from a losing city with a losing history and horrible luck as a city and franchises NOT sympathize!)

Now first I’d like to apologize for my comment footer— that relates to some posts on Fieldgulls.com that include thoughts of the Hawks trading our entire draft for your QB.

Anyway, how can a team with a solid young RB and a great young WR and a horrible O-Line AND a bad QB situation look defensively on the top pick of the draft. I don’t care how bad the D is, this pick needs to either be an O Skill position that is NOT WR, or an O-Line foundation builder.

The Peterson trade means they have 2 above average LB’s (yes, Ernie Simms is above average, not a bust). The defense may have performed below expectations, or it may have simply been bad. But a great way to improve a defense is by keeping it off the field, that’s why the Lions should have grabbed one of the LT’s at the top.

Of course, you may be right. This is the Lions, and this is the perfect bust pick for the reverse perfect 0-16 franchise.

Welcome to another year of offensive offense, Detroit fans.

If Jay Cutler is the answer, I think it may be a trick question...

by whiskey chainsaw on Mar 19, 2009 5:31 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

Simple answer

Because the defense was the weak point last year. The Lions scored points. But the other teams scored more. Most of the season was played from behind. The trend was something like this:

1. fall behind by 21 points in the 1st quarter
2a. scramble, come from behind and make a game of it (see Lions v. Colts, closer than it should have been) or
2b. get blown out (see Lions v. Titans on Thanksgiving)

in either situation it was the defense not the offense that was the larger problem. So while we (Lions fan here) got Peterson and Sims we have no one else who can tackle manning the LBs. The ability to take someone who could produce like Patrick Willis shouldn’t be passed by.

Agreed.

I’d gladly have taken him in the Peterson trade.

Curry is a good pick at any number but...

I see Jason Smith being the call. The 1-15 Dolphins went with Left Tackle and I see the Lions doing it also. MLive.com reports that Detroit is enamored with Smith and I think he will be the call regardless of their QB situation.

LB doesn’t have the overall impact that a #1 needs to have and I think that is why you don’t see LB’s taken at 1 all that often. I agree with you that Curry is probably the safest pick in the draft but I think he is a Chief, the first two teams need OLine help and bad.

This is the toughest pick of the draft

Stafford is a tremendouos risk and likely bust but QB has better value at 1
Jason Smith is nice, but I don’t think that drafting an OT number one overall will be that good of a call, I don’t think Smith is any better than Thomas, Clady, or other recent upper level OTs, but it is probably the safest pick.
Crabtree would probably be the best bet but, Lions would burn down the city if they took another WR
Curry doesn’t fit a immediate need, but he probably gets you the best bang for the buck. And you can never have too many good defensive players.

Interesting pick

and I agree that Curry’s gonna be a keeper, a great player, but also agree with above commenters that they’d be wiser to take an OL. Their line is one reason their offense has been so, well, offensive recently.

Not sure that most scouting picks will stoop to this kinda comment — “Matthew Stafford looks like Phil Mickelson with Down syndrome” — seemed a bit cruel to me (though I have my doubts about Stafford too), but I know you were just playing around. Anyway, otherwise an interesting pick that makes some sense but I don’t see the Lions actually going in that direction.

Of course, trying to picture what direction the Lions are going is always a near-impossible task.

Whoa nelly

The joys of being an all-american QB as opposed to, well, us. :-)

Whiskey, nope, not on Deadspin, might be another person with this name. I named myself after my cat who is in turn named after Dashiell Hammett. Not sure why I chose a pic of Philip Fry then. Heh.

by underdog on Mar 19, 2009 7:17 PM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

gotcha.

Thanks for the reply.

I hate to admit it, but I had to look up Hammett. Name rang a distant bell, but couldn’t place it.

I took a class in college (English Major) that was Film Noir. We watched/read the book and wrote papers on the connections and cultural impact of movies like the Talented Mr. Ripley (original), The Big Clock, Thieves LIke Us, The Postman Always Rings Twice, etc. Didn’t read any of Hammett’s but they would have fit in for the most part…

I will be surprised if the Lions actually do this

But it is not a bad pick. I don’t really have an opinion about Stafford, but I think you need to be convinced that he is “the” guy if you are going to take a QB #1 overall. And there is enough depth at OL that Detroit could wait there and address it at #20. Curry is a safe, solid pick who should help the team in 2009 and beyond.

by MattR on Mar 19, 2009 6:19 PM MDT reply actions   0 recs

Don't know Lions needs

..but I don’t think Curry was the answer. A LT for the next 12 years would have made more sense but Schwartz is a defensive mind and maybe the LB depth will be the positive!

Say hello to my fast...

Detroit at #1

my opinion from detroit is they will go with matthew stafford if a trade cant be worked out with cleveland and/or denver. should be some quality LBs and O-Lineman available at #20 & #33. let Stafford learn behind culpepper for 3/4 of the season, then unleash his cannon arm with CJ downfield

by nebulus on Mar 20, 2009 12:20 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

That's The Pick I'd Make...

but unfortunately the Lions will take Stafford. I’ve watched the kid play a ton of games for Georgia and I don’t buy into the hype. I wouldn’t spend anything more than a mid-second round pick on the kid and even then I’d be bracing for a bust.

by ejruiz on Mar 20, 2009 2:40 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

i know they won't

i know the lions won’t do this. i didn’t try to pick the guy i think the lions will take, i took the guy I WOULD TAKE. bottom line the team needs a sure thing difference maker. 1 offensive lineman aint going to do it. they can get good value at #20 and #33 at offensive lineman. the bottom line is they couldn’t get a sure thing differnece maker at #20 adn #33. they need a guy that can change the game at one side or the other and Curry is it.

by mcDah on Mar 20, 2009 7:51 AM MDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with this POV

Miami last year, the browns before that, they were trying to get their crap together, but Detroit doesn’t even have any crap together int he first place. They have a chance to add a playmaker, with solid olinemen later, they should jump on it.

They won’t, but that is another story entirely…

by Jeremy Bolander on Mar 20, 2009 10:29 AM MDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the smart choice...

but I don’t see the Lions making it… Why the Lions didn’t keep Jon Kitna is beyond me. I’m not a fan of Stafford and don’t think Sanchez is worth the #1 overall. They should of let Kitna play this year and look to draft a QB to develop in the latter rounds IMO.

Beware the wrath of a patient adversary.

I agree completely

I think that the most important thing about this pick isn’t maximizing potential, it is making sure you don’t screw it up. Curry is the most can’t miss player in the draft, and even though they took Peterson, I don’t see him as a long term solution. They couldn’t sign him last time he was a free agent and he’s only got a year left on his deal. I think they did it to get rid of Redding and try and win a game or 2 next year.

All that said, I don’t think they do it. I think that they either go Jason Smith, because they really like his toughness and it actually makes their O-Line semi solid, or Matt Stafford, because he’ll sell jersey’s and they are the worst front office in sports, doing things that baffle even the most basic of football fans.
